A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR “A BREATH OF FRESH AIR” A new year and a new project brought to you from the Carbon on Campus team. While nder, it’s content tends to largely target a female audience. For this reason the Carbon team has brought you MÄN, an edit for men. MÄN was picked as the title for two reasons. Firstly, it looks cool. Secondly, it is the Swedish word for men. This isn’t a coincidence. We wanted the edit to have a minimalistic and clean feel outside of it’s content (the content itself has been styled by it’s individual contributor, allowing them to express their creativity). Minimalistic and clean are two adjectives connected to Scandinavian design. On a personal note, I’m a fan of most things Scandinavian. Stemming from a visit to Denmark and then Sweden a few years back, I’ve become an advocate of the overall scandi vibe. Their aesthetic is one I wanted to bring into the edit. Minimal, uncluttered with small pops of colour. We’re hoping MÄN will be a breath of fresh air for Carbon’s regular readers and hopefully attract some attention from a new audience. This edition of MÄN has some very tasty content inside, and not just in the Food and Drink section. We’ve got two original photoshoots, a piece on skincare, another on technological advances and a thought provoking piece about mental health. Plus much more. All inside

40 pages. Tell your friends about MÄN. Love, Harry Turner.

Most men will say theyʼd be there for their mates if they needed them, yet most men also say that theyʼd feel uncomfortable asking mates for help. Something needs to change. The stigma surrounding menʼs mental health is still around, men are afraid to talk as theyʼre too embarrassed or theyʼve just learnt to live with it. To put that into figures; 40% of men wonʼt talk to anyone about their mental health, 22% said they wouldnʼt even feel comfortable speaking to a GP as they worry it would waste their GPʼs time. It is important to make it clear that depression and anxiety is a perfectly legitimate reason to seek medical care. Depression, anxiety and personality disorders are no more or less difficult based on your sex. Guidance, support and services that are available do not discriminate based on gender; men are always entitled to the same help and respect as women. So, why exactly is it that 40% of men would only seek professional help after having thoughts of suicide or self-harm? Men, in particular, have been told most of their lives to “man up” and “be strong” so seeking mental health resources can seem to go against cultural expectations, especially considering our culture doesnʼt always leave space for men to express struggle. Although over the past several years, there has been growing activism and interest surrounding the subject of male mental health. It is hugely important to speak up and fight the stigma. Men are afraid of looking weak or stupid if they ask for help, this is something we need to work hard on changing. Men need to know that their internal struggles are just as valid as any other struggle and does not make them any less of a man. The main issue? Most men donʼt know how to ask for help. Finding help doesnʼt have to be a daunting task, it can be as simple as going to a library and reading. Just as Matt Mahola, an author and speaker who has dealt with his own mental health struggles, did his first step on his road to recovery was reading ʻThe Art of Happinessʼ. Often, people feel a sense of relief after finally letting others know what theyʼre going through. Mental health is a lot more common than you may think, speaking up about these issues is helping to raise awareness. Sharing experiences with others will help these issues get normalized. Talking can make it so much easier to live and much easier to enjoy life. We can continue to raise awareness and normalize the fact that it may be difficult to manage stress and everyday demands. Continuing to get the message of hope is most important.

Be a man of

We all know a man of few words, and sometime enough. So, when things just arenʼt quite right, lives. So, what can you do about it? Itʼs important to recognise and pay attention to various warning signs such as addiction, loss of enthusiasm and changes to diet or routine. Warning signs can be multiple or singular. You can get better, but the first step has to be your own. There has never been a better time to look and be accepted for help with your mental wellbeing. It may feel the hardest step to take if you are suffering from poor mental health, but that first step can lead to easier and better steps too. Talking to someone you trust, a close friend or family member; take into consideration why youʼre finding it uncomfortable asking for help, are those reasons stopping you from getting the support you need? Read more about mental health and the advice that is so easily accessible. Find something that you can use as a weapon in this fight, the way you combat poor mental health, whether thatʼs exercise or spending time with friends. Find stories that will help you understand what other men have been through. You can even get involved in campaigns that raise awareness of mental health. Seeing other and more men talking about mental health is encouraging, and the trend needs to continue.

masculinity gets a makeover

mocked, ridiculed and ashamed in wanting to look and feel good. It’s a common occurrence for most males. I’ve devised SIX simple solutions to looking and feeling better, without raising suspicions.

You mention to your friend that you need to sort your nails out; automatically you get ridiculed for being a girl. You mention that your eyebrows need doing, again, you get called out for being a ʻpussyʼ. You want to look good but for some reason or anther you arenʼt allowed to announce that you want to maintain yourself in order to look good. You are just expected to wake up and be David Gandy. I am going to tell you straight. David Gandy gets his haircut, David Gandy gets his butt crack waxed. David Gandy probably moisturises with shea butter after every 20 minute long shower in which he uses essential oils and a facial mask. Oh and he also has a net worth of $26 million asa result of doing these beauty rituals. It really isnʼt anything to be ashamed of, if anything its refreshing to have a man look after himself and want to feel good about himself. Iʼve concocted six subtle steps to get you looking and feeling groomed and polished, whilst still keeping your man creds.

MOISTURISE YOUR MITTS Your hands tend to say a lot about how well you look after yourself, so if youʼre going to pay attention to one thing to try and get the message across that you look after yourself but in a subtle way, let it be with your hands. Try a cream based hand lotion. This not only will prevent wrinkling in the long run, but will make your hands silky smooth and smell brill.

THE ʻVʼ WORD Vaseline. Dry lips suck. Not only do they look gross but they genuinely hurt when they start to crack. Keep a tub of Vaseline with you wherever you go. Vaseline will help from your lips from cracking, making them look puckered up and ready for the day. Vaseline can also be used on your brows to keep them in place when they are being a bit unruly. It can also be used for a lubricant for many other situations… Its just good one to have.

THE GROOMED GENTLEMAN

Ever wanted to start a skin-care regime, but have no idea where to even begin or what products are best for what skin? Below is your step-by-step guide to give you a starting point to the best skin of your life.

If you have Sensitive Skin...

If you have Oily Skin...

For sensitive skin you want to avoid harsh, drying products as well as allergens and ingredients known to cause inflammations. Below are two cleansers that gently remove dirt whilst catering for the more sensitive of folk.

Oily skin is the bane of my life but even if it is a curse this is also a gift. Those blessed with oily skin (it is said) will age in reverse, with skin as youthful as a 20 year old at 50! Whatever you believe oily skin can be a bug bear. The trick is not to attack your skin with drying products and you must always, ALWAYS moisturise.

Elemis Sensitive Cleaning Wash: Elemis is a classic skincare staple. This cleanser removes dirt effectively without leaving the face dry or flaky.

For oily skin I would recommend cleansing once a night and using two steps:

Clinique Liquid Facial Soap: The allergy tested and fragrance free brand. This cleanser is a classic and best seller. The cleanser will remove dirt and ensure the skin does not lose balance.

Step one: use an oil/ cream based cleanser step two: use a foaming cleanser

Moisturiser: Sukin Sensitive Facial Moisturiser: This Australian brand is one of my all-time favourites and always has a place on my shelf. This product will sink into the skin without leaving a trace – a perfect drink for the skin without drenching with moisture.

Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil: Donʼt be scared off by the word oil. This is great at breaking down oil and removing dirt. Good for removing oil in the beard too!

M ä N, by Carbon on Campus.

The below Kheils products, in combination, work a treat.

Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash: Gentle, effective and clean. This second step cleanser is great at cleaning the skin without over drying. Sukin Facial Moisturiser: There is a Sukin theme! This product is a great all year round moisturiser. This will leave the skin moisturised with no sheen or excess oil. illustrations : emily hall WORDS : emily hall

If you have Dry Skin... Itʼs all about the moisturiser and masks for dry skin. Make sure not to use a harsh cleanser! Below are two skin drenching moisture saviours, especially in the winter months. Nip and Fab Dragon’s Blood Fix Plumping Mask: Donʼt be scared off by the name. This product contains Hyaluronic Acid- a skin God! This amongst other ingredients will help to inject moisture into the skin when it needs it most. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream: This is an all-round great moisturiser. It is intensive so those with oily prone skin may want to steer away but those with dry skin- do give this one a try.

If you have acne Prone Skin... Anti-Blemish Clearing Gel: This is a staple product for me. The minute you feel a spot coming put this on. For me this is an on the spot treatment rather than all over the face. Try this - it works.

IF YOU HAVE Combination Skin... This is a tricky one. However it is all about being flexibleeven when it comes to products. If you are oilier in areas I recommend using either oil-blotting pads or a product I have recently discovered. Smashbox Photofinish Primer Stick: Guys just do it, this is a discrete and great product. If you have oily skin on your T-zone/ Chin/ Nose/ any area of your face just rub some of this on in the morning and youʼre good to go. The product is clear and easy to use.

If YOU HAVE Normal Skin... There are millions of products out there. If you are new to skincare and just want to start looking after your face here are a few cult classics and staples to see you well into the skincare craze. Dead skin and need a spot treatment? Say hello to Malin and Goetz Clay Mask. Lab Series Electric Shave Solution: Want a close shave but canʼt use a razor. Use electric! If you do whack some of this on beforehand, it reduces chances of getting spots and bumps and helps the blades glide. Kheils Ultimate Man Razor Bump Relief: Razor bumps and spots? Use this tried and tested staple. This stuff is strong but works.
