Get involved with the postgraduate community As well as being represented by the VP Postgraduate, the Students’ Union provides opportunities for postgraduates to help run campaigns and organise social events and opportunities. The Postgraduate Students’ Association The Postgraduate Students’ Association is a student society committed to providing social events, day trips and networking opportunities for all postgraduates, taught or research, across the university. In the past they’ve organised a Postgraduate end of year Ball, movie nights, pub quizzes, day trips and more. You can join the Association at the Societies Fair during Freshers’ or via the Students’ Union website cardiffstudents. com. They’re also on Facebook at facebook.com/CardiffPGA. The Association is seeking several committed postgraduates to join their committee this year and help organise great events. If you would like to help build a vibrant social community, develop your CV and meet postgraduates from across the university, joining the Association committee is a great
opportunity to get involved. Jake will be publicizing how to join the committee over September and October or you can email: VPPostgraduate@cardiff.ac.uk to register your interest. The Postgraduate Executive Committee Another way to get involved with postgraduate life around campus is to join the Postgraduate Executive Committee. The Postgraduate Exec is a committee of postgraduates who work closely with the Vice President Postgraduate to run campaigns and represent postgraduates across the university. Last year they surveyed postgraduates about the university’s mental health support, publicised the benefits of trade union membership to postgrads, spoke for postgraduates in university meetings on behalf of the VP and more. If you would like to help improve the postgraduate experience, this is a great way to get closely involved with Students’ Union campaigns. Email Jake if you’re interested in applying to be on this year’s Exec or look out for when the applications open later this term.

student voice
The Students’ Union is an independent democratic membership organisation, and its main purpose is to represent you and your fellow students’ interests to the University and wider society. In the past the Union has fought to fix fees for international students, for 24h libraries and the earlier release of exam timetables. There are a number of ways in which you can raise issues you want the Union to tackle, as well as getting involved in things that are already on the agenda. Below you will find a brief description of different groups that lead our work and how you can get involved. Student Senate Student Senate creates and amends policy for the Students’ Union. That
means they decide what changes or improvements we should make or lobby for. Student Senate is made up of twenty-five senators that are elected in October during Autumn Elections. Senate meets five times a year and the meetings are open to all students. Any student can submit a motion or agenda item to Student Senate and all students are allowed to attend the meeting to argue for or against the issues on the agenda. You can find the agenda, minutes and details of the next meeting at cardiffstudents.com/senate If there is something you think can make the postgraduate experience better within the Students’ Union, make sure to submit your idea at cardiffstudents.com/ideas
CARDIFF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ UNION 9
Elections Since we are a democratic organisation all representative positions with decision making power are filled through crosscampus elections. We run two sets of elections every year, the first take place in October for Student Senate and Scrutiny Committee. The second set of elections is held in February to elect the paid full-time Officers and ten Campaign Officers. The full time Officer team is made up of one President and six Vice Presidents including a Vice President Postgraduate Students. The Campaign Officer roles are voluntary and students take these up alongside their studies. They represent minority and liberation groups to the Students’ Union and University. These roles demand a variation of voices and we are looking for postgraduates to make their voices heard! There are two main ways of getting involved – by putting your name forward for a position you are interested in or by voting for the candidates you think will do a good job. Scrutiny Committee Scrutiny Committee is made up of 10 students who hold your representatives (including the Students’ Union President and Vice President Postgraduate Students) to account. They serve to scrutinise Elected Officers’ reports to

make sure they are working in your best interests. All students can stand for election to the Scrutiny Committee which is elected in the October Autumn Elections. They will meet about eight times a year. You can see what the officers are working on and minutes from the Scrutiny Committee meetings at cardiffstudents.com/officers

Student Academic Reps What is a Student Academic Representative? A Student Academic Rep is a volunteer student who voices the comments, concerns and questions of their course to their School. Their role is to gather feedback from their course and take it to Student Staff Panels (SSPs) and Boards of Study to ensure the student voice is taken seriously at every level. In total there are over 1,100 Student Academic Reps across Cardiff University representing over 30,000 students. Postgraduate Research Representative (PGRR) Postgraduate Research Reps will also be invited to university-wide PGRR Forums. These forums, chaired by the VP Postgraduate, will give research students the chance to raise their issues directly with the Students’ Union. Become a Rep Reps play an integral part in empowering the student voice and we are always looking for new recruits. No prior experience is required; all we ask for is your enthusiasm and an open mind. The Student Voice team in the Students’ Union provide you with training and support, so you will be prepared for your role. If you are interested feel free to contact StudentReps@Cardiff.ac.uk and the

Being a Rep is a perfect opportunity to engage with students in your line of research and study, you’ll meet plenty of people along the way. You’ll get a chance to build networks with University staff and it will help you engage with senior academics. You can take part in quality assurance and improve academic standards at Cardiff University. Get involved, become a student academic rep! Any Questions? Contact: Jake Smith – Vice President Postgraduate Students. VPpostgraduate@Cardiff.ac.uk PgradOfficerCSU @PostgradCSU
CARDIFF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS’ UNION 11
Use Your Rep – What type of issues does a student Academic Rep deal with? Student Academic Reps can feedback any positive or negative comments you may have about your School, subject or module through attending Student Staff Panels which occur on average once a semester. As a result of being trained to signpost students to the relevant people, Student Academic Reps are also great sources of information regarding the various services Cardiff University and the Students’ Union has to offer.
