Who did go? Why?

“One, I didn’t get asked,” Melissa Franzen said. “Two, I didn’t feel like spending money on one night and three, I don’t enjoy seeing grinding, it’s pretty disgusting if you ask me. Also, I forgot to ask off of work.

“I went to prom,” Andrea Dawson said. “Because I thought it was going to be a really cool experience plus all of my friends forced me to go.”

“My boyfriend didn’t want to go” Ashley Jost said. “I also couldn’t afford a dress.”

“I went to prom because I thought it would be fun,” Olivia Ratzburg said. “Prom is like a right of passage for a senior.”

What’s Post Prom?

Unlimited delicous food. Troy Dehart and Isaiah Vespor split the prize money for open mic. Wheel of fortune. Lots of prizes. A bouncy house, and many other fun activities. After prom you change out of your nice clothes and wear some comfy clothes to relax. Post prom is from midnight to 3 am but, this year ran forty-five minutes over. There are such prizes as Tv’s, tickets to the Brewers, tickets to the Timberrattlers, and so much more! It’s a definite must and a definite need to thank Sue Flasch and anyone else who helped set up Post Prom! cardinal coluMns.org

Things Change

Upperclassmen Experience Rollercoaster of Change Brittany Lange // Staff Writer

T

hree years ago at Fond du Lac High School if you got caught texting in class you would get your phone taken away unless you still had a free phone pass in your planner, which could only be used once. In fact, you even had a planner three years ago. You also better have made sure you brought a book to read during D.E.A.R. You had a computer assignment in a class? Yay, you got to go to the computer lab! Lunch time? Well you had to eat quick because you only had 25 minutes to stand in line, get your food and eat. If you were late to class, you didn’t have to worry about going to the office to get a PlascoTrac; your teacher would just mark you tardy. You also had to make sure you got your homework done the night before because you didn’t have Cardinal Time to finish up your work. This year’s juniors and seniors have seen many changes over the past few years, such as the change in the grading system, introducing Chromebooks and PlascoTrac, adding Cardinal Time and lengthening the time of lunches. Students feel that some have been good, others not so much. The Cardinal Columns conducted a poll in which 200 responses were recorded. Out of all of these changes, their favorite change seemed to be lunches changing to 45 minutes, rather than 25 minutes, while introducing PlascoTrac is most students’ least favorite. Also, out of the 200 students, 121 say they think the 90-10 grading system was a bad change, especially those with test anxiety.

“It’s been a huge let down at this school for the past couple years and most likely the next couple ones too,” senior Michael Wilson said. “As a student of the senior class, I have been a part of almost two big changes each year. For one, this doesn’t allow me to become routine to anything. This doesn’t allow teachers to be routine either. Put those two together, and you really don’t have the teaching/learning environment that is acceptable. The changes have to stop in order for more successful students to come out of Fondy.” Not everyone feels all of these changes were bad, however. “The changes that have been made to Fondy are mostly good ones,” junior Stephanie Cochrane said. “Some students think they are bad or stupid because they do not care to begin with, and others just take advantage of it and abuse the freedom that we have received.” “I think every effective organization has change, but it’s calculated change, not just change for the sake of change, but rather to improve,” Fond du Lac High School principal Jon Wiltzius said. “The district’s real initiative, with technology, for example like the Chromebooks, is to ensure that our staff and our students have every tool available to them to prepare them for the future. We are being held accountable more than we ever have been. By law, we have to take very accurate records of attendance. The PlascoTrac helps us keep track of that more effectively. All effective organizations constitute change if it is needed, based on research and data.”

The Cardinal Columns sent out a survey to juniors and seniors. It received 200 responses. Here are some results.

onths of planning had finally paid off. I had the fat envelope tucked under my arm, its edges frayed but intact. I couldn’t dare to loosen my grip on it until we were off of those grounds. More than anything, I needed that parcel to validate my innocence against that tycoon, that sham who went by the name Tyler Bancroft. The police had been hunting my head like a fox for a mouse underneath the snow, but I was the unseen victim, and that envelope would redeem me while bringing Bancroft down. All the evidence was there to prove his criminality; the letters written by his overly-masculine hand, the building’s blueprints, and even the cell phone that had performed as the remote for the bomb. With that package, I would finally be free. Bryce had caught up to me and we were both collapsed on the ground army-crawl style, not risking letting the guards see us from behind the fence.

We were both breathless from bolting out of there, but he smiled at me and said in a hushed voice, “Kudos, kitten! The hard part is over!” It was true, nobody had seen us the entire time. We were also concealed by the pitch dark night, and Harley was waiting for us down by the park with the car. The huge house was directly north of us, and we had a smooth escape plan to the south down the hill, where we would be in the cover of thick trees. The chips were falling perfectly. Then I saw Christy. She was looking out from inside a third-floor window, facing south. At first I was glad to see her; she had

been an essential part of our coup from the inside. Even with the hundred or so yards between us, the light of a lamp lit up her pale face. Her eyes were staring out into the open, due to her knowledge that I was somewhere out there but she couldn’t directly see me. I noticed her lips were moving in a repetitive pattern. Bryce also noticed her and we both were able to concentrate enough to detect what Christy was mouthing so intently... He knows. We jumped to our senses when the realization kicked in; Bancroft had grasped the fact that we had infiltrated his gaudy abode. My heart pounding even faster than before, I witnessed the three guards in my field of vision each press their fat fingers to their ear pieces before grasping their guns. The great house illuminated into a cold, white beacon in the night, and our hiding spot became all the more conspicuous. Before I had a chance to panic, Bryce roughly grabbed my arm and yanked

me in his direction toward some bushes, still on our stomachs. I clutched the envelope even closer to my chest and squirmed my way to him. When slightly more concealed, we both gained our bearings to a crouched position and darted toward the trees. Nearly instantly, a guard started shouting in our direction, and the thought of his firearm brought me back to the threat of immense pain. It didn’t take long for us to hear the distant yet heavy footfalls of a guard behind, crushing twigs and thumping on leaves, so I began to hustle like no other. The trees stifled the humid summer air even more, but the forest could have burst into flames for all I cared before I would slack off and let him get a hold of me. Sprinting in long strides toward a familiar rock formation, I dodged trees and exposed roots to the best of my ability in the dim light. I had planned the heist for a night with a new moon, and hoped that it wouldn’t backfire on me. The lunk of a predator in pursuit of me and my companion was joined by two of his own. They were gaining on us. Bryce had only come with me to temporarily disable the alarm system, but he definitely wasn’t lacking in physical stamina. He caught onto my tail and I could hear his low and steady breathing pattern, and even though his presence with me was comforting, I regretted having allowed him to come along. None of my friends deserved to share in my danger, but it was too late by that point. We both traversed our way down the foliaged hill, which was slowly steepening. We reached the giant pile of boulders I had in mind. It was rather out of our way to the getaway car, still over a mile away, but it provided an obstacle with some protection. Concealed by huge rocks, I used my free hand to reach for my police baton which was strapped to my

thigh. Bryce had followed and grabbed his weapon, a small pistol, and we both hid in a little cave that had a roof of conjoining slabs. We had been ahead of our pursuers by almost 50 yards, but they would be coming with more henchmen from any angle possible. Hiding at that point at least counted as an option. If not, we each had on bulletproof vests. I heard the stooges approach the rocks concealing us, and they began to shout profanities at us, jeering and making threats on my life in particular. I was breathing so hard that I was afraid they would find our little hole just by the sound, so I covered my mouth and muted it to my ability. My heart was on the fritz in a way I had never known before. Hiding hadn’t been our best option, why had I picked it? I felt how con-

crete our stone walls were, but in that moment all they did was confine me. That was my tomb for all I knew. My confidence was dropping like a pebble to a river bed. I had made it so far, so close to my goal, and now I was trapped with those strange men, my enemies, circling my cage like vultures. There was nothing I could do but wait for them to strike. They could have shoved grenades in our shelter’s cracks. They could have camped around our abode with guns poised. Bancroft himself might have come down to see my demise with his greedy eyes. And through all of this, was Bryce. How could I have been so selfish? He would have to either kill for me or be killed. I saw his deep eyes in the shadows, and they were looking back forlornly but with a sense of hope. If it weren’t for my need to stay alert I would have sobbed for him right then, my friend through everything. Next came a sudden sound; a branch snapped somewhere in the woods. The dummies went quiet, and my fate took a change I would never forget. I heard a strong voice out of the trees announce, “Police! Drop your weapons! We have you and the house surrounded!” The police were there, and for the first time in my life, I was pleased for it.

Music demarco releases salad days and leaves you wanting more.

Mac Demarco Salad Days Captured Tracks

BY SHANE FERNANDEZ On April 1, 2014, Mac Demarco and his band released their second studio album Salad Days. Salad Days is an 11-song album which mostly consists of lo-fi, soft rock, psychedelic pop and alternative music. Prior to it’s release, there were two singles that released through iTunes. “Passing Out Pieces” and “Brother” were two singles which were met with positive reviews. Demarco had told exclaim.ca about the way he wanted his album to be, “I didn’t want to freak anybody out with a huge sound change. I wanted to transition without changing the vibe too much. The mood for Salad Days is, ‘F*** man! I was just on tour for a year and a half and I’m tired!’” I didn’t notice much of theme in Sal-

ad Days. Some songs were upbeat and happy while there were others which were slow and mellow. However, all of the songs managed to flow together perfectly. There wasn’t really any song that didn’t fit in with the album. The entire album was honestly one of the best albums I’ve heard this year. The title track of this album starts the album off with a good sound. It grasps you with it’s mellow guitar and drum sound and makes you stick around begging for more. “Passing Out Pieces” is in my opinion, one of the best songs on this album. The melody in this track sounds so abstract that it really makes this song stand out from the other songs in this album. The closing track “Jonny’s Odyssey” is purely instrumental. The song sounds perfectly distorted that it makes me want more songs to be like this. At the end of the song, Mac Demarco thanks the listener for listening to the album and implies that he is putting together another album. Overall, Salad Days is one of the best albums that has been released this year. To be honest, this is actually the first time I’ve ever listened to Mac Demarco. However, after listening to this, I’m going to have to listen to his previous albums and EPs. Lyrically, the album was decent. The sound of the album was perfect. In the end, I think Salad Days deserves a 5 out of 5 stars. Anyways, I’d recommend this album to anybody who enjoys either soft rock or alternative music.

Freddie gibbs busts open Piñata

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib

Piñata is without a doubt the best song on this album. The song features Domo Genesis, G-Wiz, Casey Veggies, Sulaiman, Meechy Darko and Mac Miller. Although some of the verses in this track are better than others, the song by itself is solid. The instrumental is so simple and repetitive on the song but it’s still one of my favorite instrumentals on this album. Overall, Piñata is a pretty average album. This was one of the first times I’ve ever listened to Freddie Gibbs. It’s

not the first time I’ve listened to Madlib though, I’m pretty familiar with his work with MF Doom. To be honest, the lyrics on this album were pretty good. They could’ve been a bit better. But in the end they were decent. The instrumentals on this album were some of the best instrumentals that I’ve ever heard and thus Freddie Gibbs and Madlib’s collaborative album Piñata earns 4 out of 5 stars for being a pretty good album that I’d recommend to anybody wanting to listen to something new.

Piñata Madlib Invazion

BY SHANE FERNANDEZ On March 18, 2014, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib released a new album which they named Piñata. Piñata is the fourth collaborative album between the two hip-hop musicians. While Freddie Gibbs handled the lyrics and rapping, Madlib produced each and every song on the album. Piñata is a 17-song album and throughout the album, many rappers such as Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis, Danny Brown and Mac Miller are heard through many of the songs. Throughout my listening experience of Piñata, I’ve managed to assume that the album is Freddie Gibbs’s story of the struggles of living in Gary, Indiana and what his average life was like in such a city. Madlib made each song sound rather unique in this album. A lot of the songs had a soulful sound but at the same time, they all had a pretty good hip-hop beat. “High” is one of my favorite tracks on this release, not only due to the fact that Danny Brown is featured in it, but also due to the fact that the instrumental is one of the best in the album. “Robes,” which features Odd Future’s own Domo Genesis and Earl Sweatshirt, is also another mentionable track on this release. The only thing that upset me with the track was the fact that the two rappers featured in the song had some of the shortest verses that I’ve ever heard. The closing track cardinal coluMns.org
