Welcome to the

“Beautiful Woman Inside and Out” Conference

North Carolina is my home, my heart and my love! Get Ready for a Beautiful Experience! My Dear Sisters,

I am so honored and blessed that you have chosen to take time out of your schedule and spend time at this “Beautiful Woman Inside and Out” conference. I am personally humbled by your presence and hope that you know that it is my MISSION to make this an absolutely wonderful day for each and every one of you! This event is so special to me because of it being in my home state of North Carolina. It is even more special because of many of the women in the attendance. There are women at this conference who have shaped my life in such a way that I can’t even express my gratitude. My aunts, cousins and family are here, my church “mommies” and teachers” like Beatrice Adams, Pat Rose, Loretta Robinson and so many more women, including Lorene Clowney and my beloved Mother have chosen to attend this event. Let me tell you a secret; I am excited and I’m a bit nervous—they don’t really know how much I love and admire them all. Truly words cannot begin to express the excitement that I have on today! I anticipate your learning, growing, stretching, your reactions, your expressions and your acceptance of the undisputed fact that you ARE beautiful! My team has worked so very hard to ensure that your expectations are met. However, I actually desire for YOU to set expectations for YOURSELF and then grow to meet them. I don’t care if you’re 12 or 99; we all can learn something new, do something different, expand our horizons and live a more beautiful life—“inside and out.” Today it is my desire for you to be totally “WOWED” by this event and your experiences. We have planned and prepared and we know that our labor is not in vain. Today I will give away HUNDREDS of gifts that are worth tens of thousands of dollars. Today our speakers and experts will impart knowledge that is invaluable and life changing. Today we will have great meals, laugh, talk and maybe even cry a little. Today we will reaffirm our inner power, beauty and strength while “tweaking” our outer beauty. Yes, TODAY is a day just for YOU! I dare you to open your heart, mind, and spirit up to allow yourself to freely enjoy today. I dare you to allow us to pamper you and shower you with attention! I dare you to give yourself a big hug and to whisper ever so softly or scream at the top of your lungs—“I AM BEAUTIFUL.” My sisters, when you really “get it” you will realize that no matter what your physical appearance; you are wonderfully and beautifully made. Embrace your own beauty—“inside and out.”

The North Carolina Girl has come HOME ! All My Love and Gratitude,

Dr. Sharon

Tara, a very down to earth and balanced woman of God, is a true servant of God in every way. She has been a member of Bethel Baptist Church Ministries since the age 10, where she has served in many ministries. A talented and gifted singer, Tara has been a part of the Little Wonders Choir, the Young Adult Choir, the Mass Choir, the Praise and Worship Team, the Audio/Video Ministry, Women of Virtue Ministry, Ushers Ministry, and the Drama and Praise Dance Ministries. With God as the head of their life, her first ministry has always been to her husband, Pastor Johnson, and their family, serving by his side and supporting him each day as God uses him to lead souls to Christ and teach the Word of God. On a day to day basis, Tara enjoys serving as a helpmate to her husband’s vision of the ministry. Their goal is to continue to strive to please God and do His will. A Licensed Cosmetologist since 2001, Tara is well-known throughout the area for her gifted hands as a stylist. Many come to her because of her sincere genuineness and warm, Christian spirit. She has a heart for young girls and the elderly and enjoys talking to young ladies and sharing the wisdom passed down from the elders. Young girls and teens come to her and spend hours sharing things about their lives for her guidance and suggestions. Tara’s role as a mentor spans throughout her community to many children and young adults. Tara has had constant involvement with Department of Social Service assisting with foster kids and hair cares services and classes, and she enjoys being an outreach ambassador to help children who are placed in this kind of care. A 1991 graduate of A.L .Brown High School, Tara loves watching the Wonders in sports action where each of their children, Antonio, Jr., (T.J.), LaCree, and Keeon, were all outstanding student athletes and also graduates. If you ask Tara who she is in her own words, you will get a humble response such as “my role is like none other; I am unique because I don’t sit to be waited on, but always willing to serve wherever there is a need.” Those words describe her greatly because Tara has a very giving nature. She never sits back to see what others will do, but rather jumps right in to help and do things herself to get it done efficiently and with decency and order. Proverbs 31:10 states, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” This scripture perfectly describes First Lady Tara Johnson as she has a heart dedicated to God and serving His people.

Keva participated with Senator Gladys Robinson in helping to pass Senate bill S60 acknowledging May as “Lupus Awareness Month” for the state of North Carolina. She offers some very powerful words to live by: many people see Lupus as the “hush-hush” disease. We have to be willing to change how people view it. A quote by William Blake states it precisely, “The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind.” We HAVE to be willing to change. When she is not pursuing her passion of educating the community about lupus, Keva is enjoying time with her family and friends. She loves to sing, travel, act and work in ministry.

Tyrone Ayoob Clemons, Dance Instructor Valarie Cooper and Tyrone Clemons of Greensboro are enjoying the best of both worlds. As creators and instructors of Smooth Grooves Urban Ballroom they are privileged to fulfill their passion for dancing, and also share it with the rest of the world. Smooth Grooves ballrooming is a smooth, cool and elegant dance which combines slow dancing, hand dancing and the ChaCha all in one. It is danced to the down beat to Rhythm and Blues, Smooth Jazz and Neo Soul. The leader leads the follower in a series of dance patterns consisting of full turns, half turns, spins and/or dips. They met on the dance floor 10 years ago and have been dancing together ever since. Wherever there is laughter, good music and dancing, Val and Tyrone are sure to be in midst. They were initially introduced to partnered dancing in April 2009 after taking a Chicago Style Stepping class. They were exposed to Detroit Style Ballroom in March of 2010 and started attending classes in High Point and Charlotte, as well as learning on their own. “We were never shy about displaying the dance publicly. Consequently people began asking how they could learn to dance like us so in January 2011 the decision to start teaching Ballroom dance was made,” they say. After speaking with their mentor Calvin Siebert (aka Mr. Smooth from Inkster, MI) they were advised and encouraged to start teaching immediately. Now three years later, Smooth Grooves class participation is growing with each new session. Smooth Grooves Urban Ballroom offers Urban Detroit Style Ballroom dance instruction, Soul Line Dance Instruction, Private Workshops for Church Singles and Couples Ministries, Public Performances, Wedding Choreography, Event Planning, DJ Services, Youth Classes, and Group Trips. They also host two major annual events that have attracted dancers from Raleigh/Durham, Fayetteville, Charlotte, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh. Tyrone and Val say they are blessed to have the opportunity to impact the lives of so many people. Smooth Grooves enables their clients to experience the same thrills. Dancing incites a sense of solitude, and produces an atmosphere where Valerie and Tyrone can elevate and transform it into whatever their imagination and creative energies desire. Within the context of Smooth Grooves Urban Ballroom, there is a leader and a follower. The leader’s role is to make the follower look as good as possible and the follower’s role is make it easy for the leader to accomplish his role. Ultimately it boils down to learning to operate as one unit while respecting each others roles. Once this is achieved, the end result is elegant, smooth graceful dancing ― Smooth Grooves Urban Ballroom. “Our biggest influence is each other and the life lessons we have learned from ‘The Dance’. Our biggest inspiration comes from our students,” they say. “We love to see our students learning the fundamentals of the dance. We can always tell which students have gone home and practiced what they have learned in class because they get better and better with each class.” However, Tyrone says the most cherished moments happens when students, after grasping the fundamental concepts, start putting their own flavor on the dance. Val and Tyrone share a competitive spirit that is rooted in a commitment to excellence and refusal to be second best. Their biggest challenge has been getting the word out to couples and singles who are looking for Smooth Grooves Ballroom dance classes. Their newest addition is classes now being offered to youth. Ballroom dancing and the other types of programs offered by Smooth Grooves gives kids other alternatives for things to do other the traditional activities. Plus they will more than likely love it.

A Salute

to Beautiful Women who Put and Kept Me on the Journey to “Becoming” I was born in Pensacola, Florida but at an early age my family moved to Kannapolis, North Carolina where I was reared, educated and most importantly loved. There are so many women who helped shape me from a baby; the first ones being my Aunties! My father’s sisters all are very special to me and each imparted something into my life. My Aunts Elizabeth, Mary, Cloise, Cleo, Jessie and Vanessa each have traits that are woven into the fabric of me. My Aunt Romely Washington is a tower of support and her home a place of warmth for my soul. Their strength, wisdom and the ability to love me in their own unique way is a gift from God that I treasure. Biological family is by blood; but there is another family that is by relationship. I am so very blessed to have women like Lorene Clowney and Beatrice Adams that are my other “Mothers.” Their example of womanhood, kindness and unconditional love and support are really one of the reasons why I spend time mentoring young women. As a child I’ve always had women who nurtured me, believed in me and recognized my gifts and talents. These women were in my church, in my neighborhood and in my schools. Every young girl has insecurities, self esteem challenges and questions about her future. I believe that the ones that move forward with the most ease are those who have a chorus of older women pushing them onward and never letting them doubt their greatness. I am humbled by all that God has and is allowing me to do. I have women who have gone on like my Grandma Clara, Sis. Reid and many others from whom I have always drawn strength. My first public speaking was at my home church, Bethel Baptist Church, and there I learned to trust God and believe that I could be all that He called me to be. Although I may not talk with them or see them as much as I would like—there are women named and unnamed to whom I am indebted. Many of these women are at this conference on today and I want to publically thank you. These women need to know that every stage, every speech, every media appearance, every book, every greeting card, every strategy session and step that I take—they have taken with me. They encouraged me, stood with me and just simply loved me. The strength that I have taken from them carries me through the ups and downs of life and keeps me grounded. I cannot name of all the women that are so important to me, but I want to especially honor the following women on today. 1. Lorene Bennett Clowney—My first “hairdresser” and a person that taught me table manners, how to speak and how to assert myself in any situation like a lady. Lorene ALWAYS has supported me and encouraged me to dream and do big! 2. Beatrice Adams—My Sunday School teacher who constantly told me that I could be a doctor, I could be anything that I wanted to be. She told me that I was special and out of her class and her love grew a lifelong admiration and friendship. I still have the cards and letters that she wrote me in college! 3. Cleo Washington—My AUNT! I learned how to be an Aunt to my nieces and nephews by modeling our relationship. She is my ultimate advisor, unwavering supporter and one of my dearest friends. She will never know just how much she means to me. 4. Guerleane Allison—My MAMA! Many people embrace her and love her because of her kind spirit and big heart. I am honored to be her only daughter and I tell people all over the country that if I could be half the woman that my Mother is that I’d be doing all right. My Mother truly is the wind beneath my wings, she has nurtured me and loved me from the very beginning and I am blessed by her love. Thank you conference attendees for indulging me, I’ve never done this before at this event but it feels GREAT! I encourage you to take time today to tell someone special what they mean to you. I also encourage YOU to mentor some young woman and help her as she journeys through womanhood!

Dr. Sharon

The Foundation’s mission was born out of my family’s experiences and my hope to help other families in similar situations. In 1986, my mother, Ms. Mary Couey, did not have the money to hire a legal representative to give her direction on what path to take to bring justice and accountability in the death of her only son, Keith Warren. She spent countless hours over the years doing her own investigations, seeking assistance, pursuing documents from the police and legal system, attempting to navigate the justice system. I stood by her as a young girl and into my womanhood and personally witnessed the pain, frustration, disrespect, untruths and secrecy that surrounded this case. As I grew, I too became passionate about the search for justice. I made a commitment to my mother and my brother, Keith, that I will work to ensure no other individual or family would have to walk our scary and horrific path in their pursuit of justice and accountability. If the Foundation can help even one family in this journey; then my brother’s death will not have been in vain. Although my mother did not see the fruits of her labor of love for her only son, Keith Warren, her legacy will on through the Keith Warren Justice Foundation and my big brother may rest in peace. Sherri Warren Sister of Keith Warren Founder and Executive Director of the Keith Warren Justice Foundation
