I hope that this review will inspire and encourage you. It has been a very eventful year, both in terms of public policy work and our educational initiatives, such as evaluate. CARE deeply values the partnerships we have with others. We take every opportunity to work with like-minded organisations on important issues relating to: human dignity, marriage and family, online protection for young people, human trafficking and many others. It is a privilege to support members of the UK Parliaments and Assemblies and the EU institutions with briefings and research. We are in touch with a growing number of church leaders; we facilitate them to help those in their congregations be that ‘light of the world’ in communities throughout the UK and to speak out on behalf of the most vulnerable in society. CARE’s acclaimed Leadership Programme continues to attract a high calibre of graduates – scores of whom have gone on to work in positions of considerable influence.

Human Trafficking: n Strongly advocating Lord Morrow’s Human Trafficking and Exploitation Bill and encouraging MLAs to support it. Member of Department of Justice’s Engagement Group on Human Trafficking. Marriage: n Opposing attempts to redefine marriage and promoting the importance of recognising marriage in the tax system.

Europe
CARE for Europe works to influence the Commission, Parliament, Council of Ministers and the Council of Europe.
Estrela Report: n Successfully campaigning against MEP Edite Estrela’s bid for Parliament to endorse the ‘right to abortion’ and education which would sexualise children of preschool age upward.
Anti-trafficking & Prostitution: n Supporting Labour MEP Mary Honeyball’s recommendations to criminalise purchase of sex and to care for victims. This approach has seen demand for prostitution fall in Sweden and Iceland and it is gaining momentum across Europe. The report was adopted. Lunacek Report: n Opposing MEP Ulrike Lunacek’s report which sought special categorisation of crimes against homosexuals and promoted homosexual ‘marriage’.
Media involvement Contributing a Christian perspective and standing for the vulnerable and voiceless by communicating graciously on sensitive and complicated issues. CARE has received significant media coverage in national broadsheets, local newspapers and several Christian publications this year. Members of the team are regularly interviewed for national broadcast media and Christian radio stations. During 2013-14 this included interviews with Sky News, ITV, STV (Scotland), BBC News, BBC Radio 5 Live, Premier Christian Radio and UCB (United Christian Broadcasters).

CARE’s Leadership Programme educates and encourages Christian graduates at the beginning of their working lives, combining practical experience and further study to equip them for public leadership. Participants gain insight into political life through the lens of faith through four-day-a-week placements, and a study programme on Fridays and over three weekends. Over 240 alumni now work within politics, the third sector, business, media, education and the Church. Nine students graduated from the Leadership Programme in July 2013. Ten new participants joined in September 2013; six were placed in parliamentary offices, covering each of the main political parties, and four in third sector organisations.

evaluate...informing choice is delivered in schools by trained volunteer teams. It combines age-appropriate discussion, games, quizzes and role-plays to bring a fresh, multimedia edge to relationship education. At its heart is belief in the value of every individual and it seeks to empower young people by building their self-esteem and encouraging them to make good healthy choices. This year, teams visited 67 schools – including 28 primaries – and presented to more than 18,000 children and teenagers. Feedback continues to be positive from students and teaching staff. Since launching in January 2004, evaluate teams have visited 252 schools and educated 161,400 young people.

Praying for Schools Pray for Schools (PFS) – CARE’s partnership with Youth for Christ, the Association of Christian Teachers and Churches Together in England (CTE) – has a vision for every school to be a ‘prayed for’ school. Sixty more prayer groups have registered in England this year, bringing the total of prayed-for schools to almost 1,500. Eighty people pray for 133 schools in Wales, and PFS now operates in Northern Ireland. Sixty-five prayer events took place during the year and PFS is increasingly known throughout the Christian education world.

Local events... We really value the opportunity to share CARE’s encouragements and challenges with supporters face-to-face. This year we met over 1,300 people at events in 19 locations and hosted lunches attended by more than 500 church leaders. CARE Events Team
Communicating online... People can engage with CARE’s causes and join in the online discussion on Facebook and Twitter. This year, we publicised Marriage Week’s The Big Promise Campaign on social media and our Anti-Slavery Day online campaign raised awareness of human trafficking. Thank you I hope this snapshot of CARE’s work in 20132014 will encourage you to support us in the coming months. As we reflect on the past and pray for God’s ongoing guidance and wisdom we see certain recurring themes and priorities coming to the fore: the inestimable value of human lives created in God’s image, the importance of secure and loving family life, our responsibility to protect the most vulnerable and the call to stand up for truth and justice in public life. This is part of CARE’s DNA! Since the 1970s we have endeavoured to make a real Christian difference: defending the unborn, challenging the redefinition of marriage, protecting those being trafficked, promoting positive relationship and sex education in schools, and opposing further liberalisation of abortion and legalisation of any form of euthanasia. We are committed to resourcing our long-standing supporters and also inspiring a younger generation. This year has seen exciting new developments as we prayerfully consider what kind of legacy we can provide to enable Christians in their 20s, 30s and 40s to continue CARE’s ministry – needed in these days more than ever.
