LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
LONGEVITY & RESILIENCE
Pro Tips
“Having long life requires a certain level of resiliency to quickly recover in the face of challenges.”
A
s we gear up for hot fun in the summertime, we’re anticipating the time to just chill. This may mean vacationing, boating, golfing or just sitting with a cold glass of lemonade on a porch. It is truly about relaxing.
Summers offer us a unique window to celebrate life together with family, free from the usual rush of the school year or for us here at Career Mastered, the planning of the annual leadership summit and awards. It is our chance to sit back to reflect on the moments of the recently 10-year Career Mastered Awards celebration while enjoying the summer days with family making memories full of adventure. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Career Mastered which inspires us to reflect on exactly what it took to reach this important milestone.
While there are so many factors that came into play, if we could summarize, what did it all boil down to in the end? Resilience. Having a long life in anything whether it be in health, marriage, or career requires a certain level of elasticity and resiliency to quickly recover in the face of challenges. In this issue, we share an exclusive interview with the Career Mastered 2024 National Living Legend, Holly Robinson Peete, Actor, Author, Philanthropist, Brand Spokesperson. Holly attended the recently held Career Mastered 10h Anniversary celebration in Detroit. I had the pleasure of sitting with her during a fired side chat where we discussed resiliency and longevity. My personal thanks and gratitude to Holly for being an inspiration to many of us in work and life. As with all issues of Career Mastered, we ensure our articles are relevant. So, sit back and relax as you read about survival tools to stay cool, dream escape vacations, the benefits of
exercise to live longer, pro tips to shine brightly in work and life and so much more. This summer, enjoy the present moments, cherish the daily interactions, and be sure to look forward to the future with anticipation and hope. Here’s to a Summer filled with love, laughter, and the making of lasting memories. Cheers,

REAP THE BENEFITS OF
EXERCISE
THIS SUMMER!
BY: Jody Trierweiler HEALTH & WELLNESS
HOW TO LIVE LONGER AND REDUCE DISEASE RISK
Want to lose weight in a healthy way? Want to reduce anxiety and depression by up to 50%? Want to lower inflammation? Want to reduce arthritis pain? Want to lower Alzheimer’s risk by up to 50%? Want to reverse type 2 diabetes? Want to prevent certain cancers? Want to reduce menopause symptoms? Then, you’ll need to exercise. Why? Because physical inactivity is a contributing cause to many of these underlying conditions. If you want to live longer and help reduce these risks, here’s what you can do today to reap the benefits of exercise this summer. EVALUATE YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE: Take a moment to evaluate your current exercise routine. Are you meeting the minimum guidelines? Summer is a great time to make a change to your current fitness plan. The summer months make it both easier and more difficult to exercise outdoors. Why? The weather tends to be much warmer and more pleasant, but at times can become dangerously hot and humid. PRACTICE REGULAR, MODERATE EXERCISE: In order to meet the latest guidelines of 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise, you can aim for a 30 minute exercise session five times a week. There is no upper limit to the quantity of moderate exercise. Very intense cardiovascular and strength training should be limited to
MODIFY YOUR WORKOUTS TO BEAT THE SUMMER HEAT: If you choose to perform your exercises outside, consider the heat and humidity, which pose a risk for heat stroke and dehydration. Get out earlier in the day when it’s cooler, or choose a shady area or perhaps a water activity to stay cool. Otherwise, it’s best to stay in an air conditioned environment in the hot summer months in order to keep your workouts safe.
Drinking water is fine during the first hour of exercise, anything longer than an hour in warmer weather would justify an electrolyte replacement beverage. When choosing an electrolyte drink, look for one without added sugars and containing magnesium, potassium, and sodium. The bottom line is that exercise is so important year round, and continuing your regimen through the summer is critical for your continued health. Summer is also a good time to start a new routine, and try new activities outdoors with family, friends, and pets. Take advantage of the beautiful weather to increase your exercise to meet the recommended minimum of 150 weekly minutes and live a healthier life! x Jody Trierweiler, C.N.C is a CM Magazine Contributor, and health and fitness expert in Metro Detroit. This includes HIIT (high intensity interval training) marathons and Iron Man races, very heavy strength training, etc. Standard activities like biking, exercise classes, swimming, gardening, and so many more activities qualify as moderate exercise, which again, can be done as much as you like without dangerous risks.

WHEN IS IT TIME
TO BEGIN
INVESTING?
I
n previous posts, we talked, listed, and shouted about the benefits of investing. Maybe you’ve read our blogs about why people who begin early have an extensive advantage over those who wait, or why dollar-cost averaging makes sense for the person who (adeptly) is looking toward long-term gains. However, you may have read every word, watched our videos, and walked away from our content agreeing with what we said—in theory. In other words, you may be in your thirties, and whatever money you earn goes out just as quickly. As much as you want to invest and build your financial future, you still need to pay your bills, put food on the table, and provide for your family.
BY: Glenn E. Wright II FINANCE We understand. Believing that investing is for everyone is a cornerstone of Worth Advisors, LLC. flow) is actively building your future. With this in mind, we want to explain your financial position before you begin investing because we want to encourage you to take a step toward a better financial future. Where it begins Your first step is ensuring you have a positive cash flow plan, which you must keep. This includes streaming services, eating out (or paying the additional costs associated with things like DoorDash), and anything else that is a fundamental necessity. Don’t look at it as cutting out the things you enjoy; think of it as paying yourself before you pay others. If you have to choose between buying a new coat or saving money, select the latter, especially if you already have a coat. This requires discipline, but if you choose the coat, you may do so to your detriment.
money to last you twelve months. However, that doesn’t mean all that money should be in your bank. If your income was suddenly shut down, how much money would you need to survive for three months? That is what goes into the bank. That is your goal, and then you can begin saving the rest in a brokerage portfolio. When you work with our financial advisors, we will select a conservative portfolio because we understand that even though you invest this money, it is still part of your emergency reserve. The money is doing some work for you, but it is improbable that you will lose it.

e’ve all heard some variation of these sayings before in some form or fashion. Though for many of us asking for what we want comes naturally amongst our friend group, in romantic relationships, and even on social media, this still proves to be a struggle for even the most ambitious and successful women to assert themselves in the workplace and in high-level meetings.

16 Career Mastered • SUMMER 2024
It’s a known fact that women are often less assertive than their male colleagues in the workplace and tend to apologize or minimize the importance of what they say whenever they do speak up. A study on gendered ageism in the workplace even revealed that 70% of women in the study stated they didn't speak up because they didn't believe it would make a difference, and 23% didn't want to risk losing their job for speaking up. It’s true there is power in speaking up—-the main one: you might just get what you’re asking for… But even if that’s not enough of a reason, the following is a list of more things you could gain by using your voice and speaking up in both your personal and professional life, even if you’re afraid. GAIN VISIBILITY A sure-fire way of getting overlooked is to blend into the background, never formulate your own thoughts, and never take a stand for what matters most to you. People who dare to speak up in meetings as a result gain visibility and command a brand of authority. Speaking up to gain visibility isn’t just a one time thing though. It requires consistent courage. But as the saying goes, “scared money doesn’t make money.” Sometimes you have to learn how to take action even when you’re afraid. Increase your influence Another byproduct of speaking up is the ability to attract a certain level of influence. Believe it or not, if you’re in the room, it’s because you deserve to be; and if you’re in the room, people
actually want to hear what you have to say! It doesn’t do anyone any good if everyone simply agrees to the loudest opinion for the sake of not ruffling any feathers.

ESCAPES for Those Who Work Hard & Play Hard BY: Asia Shamir Ferguson TRAVEL & LEISURE
18 Career Mastered • SUMMER 2024
S
ummer–those special three months are here! The season where the kids are out on school break and we try to keep work light so we can escape to those vacations that got booked months in advance. We all need a break sometime, especially if you’ve been on the grind non-stop. Make plans to escape the meetings and constant ripping and running with these vacation ideas this summer. For these trips, the only time you have to book on your calendar is your spa day; and the only running you’ll be doing will be to your terminal! If you plan on traveling solo, with the family, or with your girlfriends we’ve got the perfect summer getaways for your sunny regroup.
SOLO TRIPS
Ease your mind, relax, and regroup alone. Don’t feel anxious or guilty for wanting to pour into yourself and refresh. Working as hard as you do, it’s extremely important to delegate time to self-care where you can be fully present and at peace in your isolation. There’s something liberating about taking back your time and getting to be as adventurous as you want! Because this is your trip, the possibilities are endless. However, in this economy, we want to stay open to multiple price points, so you don’t end up with your back against the wall. For solo trips, if you don’t want to run through a whole paycheck in a day, the most ethical, yet still luxurious options would be a staycation, spa day, or a day trip to a nearby resort.
FAMILY TRIPS
The kids are out of school, and you can finally spend time with your loved ones far outside of home. When vacationing with a group where every member has separate interests, it’s best to choose activity-based trips! Cruises or resorts make the perfect family getaways as they’re all-inclusive with dining and entertainment and childcare.
Also, booking a vacation in a familyfriendly hotspot like Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA could open you and your family up to a new and relaxing scenery. If you’re traveling with sustainability in mind, camping and road trips allow for ways to save money while still getting valuable quality time. While family vacations may sound overwhelming to some, not all vacations need to be grand-sized trips. Sometimes a simple day trip to the beach if you could swing it could prove to go a long way.
GIRLS TRIPS
International trips with the girls will always be one for the books! Cruises are also a great way to enjoy a simple, yet luxurious getaway with your fellow hardworking besties. Even if you get separated due to limitless activities, no one will get bored. For the women who enjoy music and desire more artistic activities, considering attending a music festival could be an exhilarating experience. If you and your girls want to commit to vacationing further than Miami, international hotspots like Greece, Mexico, Spain, and Italy are perfect getaways to explore new cultures and food together. Not only is it less expensive than a solo trip, but nothing beats sipping margaritas in bikinis in new corners of the world with your girls.
The hard work doesn’t stop, but we can always take a break to play hard and take advantage of the sunny skies while they’re here. So let this be your nudge to book a beautiful getaway whether it’s a solo trip, with family, or with your girls so you can soak in the warm and vibrant days ahead. x

TOOLS to Stay Cool Amid Work Chaos
BY: Dr. Sabrina Jackson WORK/LIFE
Career Mastered • SUMMER 2024
SURVIVAL
The World Health Organization put out a study on the workplace which revealed that since the pandemic there has been a tsunami of new mental health diagnoses. As a result, employers are now challenged to create policies that address assisting the staff dealing with these obstacles in the workplace.
23
The workplace of 2024 is full of challenges that can be characterized as chaotic. Some of the prevailing challenges in the workplace are high turnover rates, staff/ customer conflict, micromanagement, and mental health.
24 Career Mastered • SUMMER 2024
Recognizing that this new work environment can be chaotic, here are development tools to keep calm no matter what is going on. When we think about survival tools, we think of being prepared for a disaster. Well, the survival tools required for the workplace are designed to keep your calm during chaos with co-workers, supervisors, or customers. These are the tools that are necessary to control your emotions and behaviors so you can keep calm in the workplace amidst the chaos:
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE SKILLS
Emotional intelligence involves being able to manage your own emotions and assessing the emotions of others. There are 4 elements to emotional intelligence: Self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, and relationship management. These four elements will assist you in keeping your cool in the workplace.
POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS
Say positive things to yourself about yourself and your work environment. Instead of saying “I have to go to work” change it to “I get to go to work”, which shifts your
mental state into gratitude instead of complaint. Develop conflict management skills The one thing that is constant when working is conflict because people simply see things differently. One of the major skills necessary to resolve conflict is empathy (being able to see things from the other person’s point of view). It is also necessary to think about how the resolution can be a win-win.
SELF-CARE PRACTICES
Self-care means putting you first on the list of your priorities. Self-care is more than getting a mani/pedi, massage, or a facial. Other elements of self-care include being kind to yourself, setting healthy boundaries, and letting go of yesterday’s baggage.
SOCIAL SUPPORT
Create a circle of support that may include trusted friends and family members, a professional therapist, life coach, business coach, or spiritual support. When selecting a person to be in your circle of support look for people you can be honest with without judgment. Professional development resources To improve in your role at work, seek training, certifications, and courses to increase your knowledge in your role. Being a lifelong learner helps you to bring your A-game to every opportunity. As you review these survival tools, take whatever you find useful to help you keep calm in the chaotic workplace. x
STRESS MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
Understanding how stress shows up within you is crucial in helping you to remain calm. Stress shows up physically: headaches, stomach upset, or grinding teeth; emotionally: depression, anxiety, irritability; behaviorally: angry outburst, social withdrawal, and sleep problems. Once you identify how stress shows up for you, then create a plan on addressing the stress. Some options include deep breathing, relaxation techniques, laughing on purpose, and exercise.

flexible in business and in life. When strategy meets flexibility, you are able to gain access to more open doors and say yes to opportunities you may have otherwise shut off that could support your business and help you grow. LOOK AFTER YOUR WELL-BEING Physical and mental health shouldn’t be ignored, especially if you want to let your light shine in life and business. Take care of your body, mind and soul to balance deadlines, tough decision making and having the energy and capacity to physically and mentally handle what's expected of you. Oftentimes, we forget that our mind is a muscle that also needs rest and to be refreshed just like
our bodies. Don’t forget your mental self care in your efforts. SEEK CLARITY Being clear on what you want in life and your business will surely help you shine! Carve out time on your agenda to spend time in self reflection, visualizing your future, and allowing creativity to flow. Having clarity on what you want in business and life is definitely a set up for success. STAY TEACHABLE Part of the “glow up” is staying teachable and open to change. It's so great that we don’t know everything and can glean from each other! Listening to others, networking and being a lifelong learner will help you rise to the top in life and business. This doesn't mean you have to always follow what is trending or do what you’re being told, it just means you are
willing to learn from others and use what you can to support your cause or business. You can take that and run with it! EMBRACE LEADING WITH ACTION Becoming a leader of action means to live in practice and in deed what you say you want to happen. Become an active participant in making changes in your community and workplace (or wherever you have influence). Let your light shine and lead the way for others. Let’s face it, what good is light if we don’t share it with someone else? ENJOY THE RIDE Lastly, have fun shining bright in your life and business! When you do what you love, it has a great impact on the quality of your life and business, and it’s also a key to having longevity. Doing what you love is going to be a great way to ensure that you thrive in both. So, no matter where life takes you and no matter what you have in store for yourself, just remember to find a way to enjoy the ride. x

RESILIENCE
T
his year marks the 10th anniversary of Career Mastered Magazine, which inspires us to reflect on exactly what it took to reach this important milestone. While there are so many factors that came into play, if we could summarize, what did it all boil down to in the end? Resilience. Having a long life in anything whether it be in health, marriage, or career requires a certain level of elasticity and resiliency to quickly recover in the face of challenge. Holly Robinson Peete— the actor, singer, author, producer and philanthropist most known for her roles on 21 Jump Street, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, and For Your Love, humanitarianism through her nonprofit the HollyRod Foundation, and time spent as one of the original co-hosts of

the CBS Daytime talk show The Talk—is no stranger to the art of longevity and resiliency. Holly landed her first acting role at just 5 years old with a small appearance on Sesame Street, where her father was a writer and producer “who just kind of ended up saving the day and becoming Gordon on Sesame Street when the other actor fell through.” This was in 1969 when the iconic children’s program was just kicking off. Holly’s parents were resistant to the idea of her becoming an actor, and when given the chance, she blew the one line she was given on Sesame Street by saying “Hi daddy” instead of “Hi, Gordon”. Since then, Holly’s resiliency has cemented her a legacy in the entertainment industry with a 40-year journey that’s earned her a legendary Hollywood Star on the Walk of Fame, an NAACP Image Award, and long-lasting reputation of honor, class, professionalism, and grace.
"I THINK THE KEY TO RESILIENCE AND LONGEVITY IS BELIEF IN YOURSELF THAT YOU WILL OVERCOME ANYTHING." With a high-level career and marriage spanning across the decades, there’s a lot we can all learn from Holly and her ability to tap into permanence and stability while maintaining an admirable reputation. We had the chance to dive deep with Holly, who revealed her “secret” to resiliency and longevity, which you can use to develop lasting power in areas of your own life. Q: What were the early days like in the pursuit of getting your acting dream off the ground before you caught your “big break”?
(i.e. work ethic, crafting your skills, learning the industry, rookie mistakes, etc.) What did you learn about yourself? After Sesame Street, my parents did everything they could to keep me from being a child actor because they knew that wasn’t a great environment to raise a kid in. But after I moved to California with my mother, after my parents split up, she became a talent manager and every now and then there would be parts that she thought I might be able to do and I would just do them casually. It really wasn’t until I graduated from college and got 21 Jump Street that I really would’ve considered myself an actor. I loved singing as well so I tried to nurture that and make that a career but the acting break came first. I kind of learned on the job. It was such a crazy time. Here you had a brand new, unknown, Johnny Depp, and other actors working in Canada on a show, which started and kicked off a whole network—the Fox Network. It was a crazy time. So I kind of studied on the job and I think that

Q: What has been your Career Mastered Moment? I guess the Hollywood star would be my career mastered moment because it really brought together all of the people who helped me get this far. It was a moment where I really reflected how hard I worked and how much time and energy I put into my acting career. For the foundation and my philanthropic career, I’d have to say the moment was when Muhammad Ali showed up in 2002 to our gala and literally saved our foundation, which was about to shut down due to lack of funding. When he showed up that day, the press came, the sponsors and donors came and we have not looked back.
First, I want to commend you for being courageous enough to be vulnerable and spread awareness with your foundation. And I want to ask you, why is it important for you to use your platform to talk about personal topics like this? Is it ever hard to have to navigate personal matters like love and health conditions in the public eye? When we first got the diagnosis for my dad’s Parkinson's disease, my brother and I were just absolutely devastated. We didn’t know what it was. It was the 80s. There was no Google. There was no Michael J. Fox or Muhammad Ali to shine the light. We were just devastated and we didn’t know what to do so we spent the first 10 years dealing with it privately. But then somehow, I mentioned it in an interview and the next thing I knew I was getting letters from other families whose loved ones were diagnosed and they were lost and had no information, no resources and were looking for somebody to shine the light for them. So that’s when we started our advocacy for Parkinson’s.
Fast forward many years later when we got the diagnosis of autism for our son that was also a really difficult moment and then we were not ready at the time of diagnosis to have a public Q: Not only have you seen conversation. It took about eight or nine years longevity/resiliency in the TV and before we were ready. But we saw immediately film industry, you’ve also seen what a difference it made when we shared longevity in your marriage with our journey. When we got the diagnosis of the two of you being together for autism, we didn’t see celebrities or people with nearly 30 years. What would you say is working for you? What keeps platforms talking about it, and it made it harder. So after much discussion, we decided we would you “in the game”/ keeps you take on that role as a family to share the stories. going? We are so glad that we did. Our advocacy has brought us so much personal joy and we’re so The biggest thing for me is the fact that Rodney agreed to go to therapy grateful for the blessings that the foundation before we even got married. But I guess a crew works with you and you’re pleasant to at the end of the day we never gave be around and you’re kind and easy to work with, they take that onto the next project. “Oh, up on each other. I just worked with Holly. She was so much fun and she always called me by name and said Q: We know that love is a very personal matter (and so are health good morning.” It sounds like a small thing, but when you consistently do that, you develop diagnoses like Parkinson’s and a reputation of being someone who is very autism), yet these are all areas we see you’ve become an advocate for sweet. Oftentimes we treat people who have positions blow us in a way that is unnecessarily over the years, especially with the disrespectful and the way you treat those work of the HollyRod Foundation.
people will come back to you. I really firmly believe that I have been able to carve out a career in this business for 40 years because people want to work with me, not just tolerate me. You can’t have resilience or longevity in anything in life without having heart, grit, and being a continuous learner, which are all qualities Holly Robinson Peete surely has no shortage of.. In fact, part of why Holly has had staying power could be because she is someone who truly understands and embraces the power of philanthropy by really fighting hard to give back to those who really needed a lift. Also, not many people know that Holly is also fluent in French (what she majored in college) and believes that understanding other cultures is a key to coexisting with others and world peace. As far as what’s next? Holly is currently working on a memoir, developing a couple of TV shows, and gearing up for season two of Queens Court–a show on Peacock she hosts with her husband. The HollyRod Foundation is also set to host its big fundraiser in July. To help support programs for families impacted by autism and Parkinson’s disease or to learn more about the HollyRod Foundation, you can visit hollyrod.org to find out how you can get involved. x

WHAT IS
HUMAN DESIGN and Why is Ever yone Talking About It?
T
here is a new buzzword in the landscape of self-discovery and personal growth. The new hype is Human Design.
What is Human Design? Human Design is a tool for selfawareness and empowerment that provides a blueprint of an individual’s unique energetic makeup revealing insights in the personality, strengths, weaknesses and life purpose. The system is based on the premise that each person is born with a specific
design, influenced by the positions of the planets at the time of their birth. The components of defined and undefined centers, channels, and gates that provide an explanation for personality traits, behavioral patterns, and areas of potential growth. Human Design categorizes individuals into five distinct energy types with each type operating differently, having its own strategy for living in alignment with one’s true nature. The five types are:
BY: Haseena Shaheed-Jackson HUMAN DESIGN
37 Career Mastered • SUMMER 2024
• Manifestors: characterized by their ability to initiate action and manifest their desires independently. • Generators: have the stamina and the self-sustaining energy to build, create, work and keep the world running. • Manifesting-Generators: designed to respond to life's opportunities and engage in work in the “sweet spot”. • Projectors: excel in guiding and managing the energy of others. • Reflectors: highly sensitive individuals who mirror the overall health of their environment. By understanding one’s human design, individuals can make informed decisions about career paths, relationships, health, and overall lifestyle choices. The Origin of Human Design The pioneer of Human Design is Ra Uru Hu who claimed to have received the information during a mystical experience in 1987. It combines elements of astrology, the I Ching, Kabbalah, the chakra, spirituality and quantum physics. The uniqueness of Human Design is its emphasis on the interplay between different energy
centers within the body, known as "chakras". What is causing the buzz? The buzz is based on five key characteristics: 1. Self-understanding: Offers a framework for gaining deeper insights into one’s own nature, motivations, and behavior patterns unlocking hidden potentials and overcoming obstacles to personal growth. 2. Spiritual exploration: Provide a gateway to exploring questions of purpose, destiny, and the nature of reality. Offering a synthesis of ancient wisdom traditions and modern metaphysical concepts. 3. Community and connection: Fosters a vibrant community of practitioners and enthusiasts coming together to share insights, experiences, and support. Individuals can connect with like-minded seekers and embark on a shared journey of self-discovery. 4. Life guidance and decision-making: Outlines strategies prescribed by design categories aiding individuals to make more informed decisions, navigate relationships and career choices more effectively. Ultimately, living a more fulfilling and authentic life.
5. Alternative to traditional systems: Offers a fresh perspective on age-old questions of identity, purpose, and meaning. By integrating elements of science, spirituality, and mysticism, it provides a holistic approach to understanding the human experience. Human Design offers a fascinating lens through which to explore the complexities of human nature and the universe at large. Individuals can take a journey into self-discovery, empowerment, and growth. It is essential to approach Human Design with a discerning mind. While many individuals may find value and resonance in its teachings, others may view it as pseudoscience or esoteric mumbo jumbo. As with any belief system or self-help tool, it's essential to take what resonates and leave what doesn't, integrating the insights that align with one's own experiences and intuition. x Haseena Shaheed-Jackson is Executive Director/ Founder of Ava’s Pathways, a non-profit organization for women supporting women providing coaching and restorative circles. (Psst.

EMBELLISHMENTS OVER PRINTS The fashion trends for all of 2024 have been very bold and dramatic, but in a good way of course! This summer, the obsession with florals during the warm weather will be reimagined with a huge twist. Instead of the cliché prints and patterns, Summer 2024 will take it up a notch with embellishments and silhouettes. Yes, that means we are getting quite literal this summer incorporating actual shapes and embroidery into our looks that originally would’ve been 2D prints. In simpler terms, if you’re planning to wear roses and flowers this season, expect to see the
newer designs being taken up a few notches! ABOVE AND BEYOND DENIM SHORTS Denim shorts seem to be a timeless warm weather staple that’s seen longevity over the years (as they should). However, this summer it’s all about baggy bermudastyle denim shorts. You can make a distinctive style statement by expanding the range of your silhouettes and fabrics to take this trend beyond tradition.
handbag. You might also consider switching out your go-to black top for a pure white one as a nod to the sunny summer skies.
For many of us working women, denim shorts won’t fly in the office; but on those days when you’re out running errands or with friends and family, denim is a great item to have for dressing up or down since it’s seamless to make the switch from sneakers to heels and vice versa. PURE AND WHITE It's normal to break out the vibrant color hues around this time of year, but this season we are expanding on our lover girl eras with a dip into the simplicity and purity of white. Living in a time where it’s now socially accepted to strut in white after Labor Day, the issue doesn't lie on when to wear it, but how. You can start slow with a white blouse, shoe, or
FRINGE Have you noticed a recent cowgirl trend? Blame it on Beyonce (Queen Bey), but I’m not mad at it! Fringe can be executed in so many ways: on dresses, skirts, jackets, pants, and handbags, the possibilities are endless. On those hot summer days when your outfit still needs a bit more pizazz, allow fringe to enter the chat. Heads up! Don’t be so ready to toss this one in a bin when cooler weather rolls back around. It looks like Fall/Winter ’24 will expand upon the cowgirl trend in ways you’d never imagine so be ready to repurpose your new fringe items to style later in the year. Incorporating these bold trends into your summer looks may feel like an uncomfortable change, but slaying each look is playing into the concept of what summer is all about: having fun! The key to longevity is becoming adaptable and able to embrace change throughout whatever season you’re at in life so you can evolve and make room for a newer, better version of you. Learn to be one with the season ahead of you and be sure to give yourself grace and ease to come out more powerful than ever! x Asia Shamir Ferguson is a wardrobe stylist, content creator, and journalist based in Atlanta, GA. DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION for Human Sustainability
D
iversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) has been a hot topic in the workplace recently. Some are against it and some are in favor of it. We need to realize that human sustainability goes beyond environmental protection. It is about creating a future where everyone thrives. This requires a world that embraces DE&I, so let us explore why DE&I is the cornerstone of a sustainable human future.
BY: Priya Kumar DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION
A WELLSPRING OF SOLUTIONS: Today's complex challenges, from climate change to social inequities, demand solutions from every corner. DE&I acts as a prism, refracting a rich spectrum of viewpoints, experiences, and backgrounds. This vibrant mix fuels innovation. When people from all walks of life come together, they contribute unique perspectives, leading to a wellspring of creative and impactful solutions for lasting sustainability.
42 Career Mastered • SUMMER 2024
EMPOWERING THE VULNERABLE: However, the promise of sustainability crumbles when marginalized communities lack the support to rise above their circumstances. Policy changes and rising costs for essentials create a suffocating cycle of hardship. This lack of equity disproportionately impacts marginalized communities, hindering their ability to invest in education, healthcare, and green technologies – all crucial for adapting to a changing environment. Without this safety net, these communities become even more vulnerable to the very environmental challenges we're striving to overcome. This creates a vicious cycle of perpetuating poverty, which hinders our collective ability to achieve a sustainable future for all. BUILDING RESILIENCE THROUGH EQUITY: Equity goes beyond just having diverse voices in the room. It's about ensuring everyone has the resources and opportunities to contribute. When everyone has a fair shot at education, healthcare, and economic opportunity, societies become more resilient and adaptable in the face of global challenges.
THE BUSINESS CASE FOR DE&I: Companies that champion DE&I aren't just doing the right thing, they're building a stronger business. Studies show a positive correlation between DE&I and financial performance. A diverse workforce fosters innovation and leads to better decision-making by incorporating a wider range of perspectives. This translates to more creative solutions, stronger market understanding, and a more engaged workforce, all contributing to a company's bottom line. In short, DE&I isn't just a social responsibility, it's a smart business strategy for sustainable success.
THE POWER OF SEEING OURSELVES: Representation in sustainability goes far beyond simply mirroring demographics. It's about fostering a sense of empowerment and ownership in creating a sustainable future. When we see diverse faces – from scientists tackling climate change to community leaders spearheading environmental justice initiatives – it shatters stereotypes and sends a powerful message: "You too can be a part of the solution." This validation fuels self-esteem, dismantles limiting beliefs, and inspires future generations to contribute their unique talents and perspectives. By ensuring everyone sees themselves reflected in the fight for sustainability, we unlock the full potential of a thriving human future for all. x

ACTIONS
to Build a Foundation for Sustainable Performance
A
s companies all over the world adapt to new trends and technologies, one of the biggest challenges leaders of today face is how to cultivate an environment that not only drives success but also encourages employee longevity.
BY: Lisa Nichols WORKPLACE A 2023 Qualtrics survey of nearly 37,000 employees revealed that “Thirty-nine percent of employees who have been with a company for less than six months plan to leave within the next 12 months, a 6-point increase from last year.” With a decrease in engagement during the first few months of employment becoming more common, how can leaders create a workplace that fosters employee growth, engagement and success?
1. INVEST TIME, ENERGY, AND FUNDS IN EQUIPPING YOUR PEOPLE. A commitment to their continued career growth might mean developing a more robust onboarding process, offering additional employee learning experiences, or standardizing one-on-one coaching for emerging leaders. Employees are looking for professional development opportunities, and this investment energizes morale and enables them to take on new challenges. 2. GIVE CLEAR AND SPECIFIC FEEDBACK. Boost your employees’ confidence by acknowledging their contributions to the team and letting them know what you appreciate most about who they are. As you recognize their abilities and give clear and specific feedback about their performance, you encourage them to continually pursue their own learning and development. Seeing someone’s potential and communicating the possibility you envision for them is one of the most powerful ways to inspire growth, and the more employees flourish within
3. WELCOME NEW PERSPECTIVES. Co-create your long-term strategy with your employees, and welcome their perspectives and ideas. The healthiest and highest-performing workplaces offer environments that encourage diverse ways of thinking. When you cultivate psychological safety, team members aren’t afraid to speak up because they know there’s no threat of repercussions, and the freedom to actively contribute to the team unlocks creativity and innovation. 4. BUILD TEAM-CONNECTION. More than anything else, feeling like you’re not alone prevents burnout during times of high stress, and having authentic relationships with your colleagues fosters a sense of belonging. For leaders, identifying your own emotions and holding space for your employees to recognize what they’re
experiencing is one of the primary ways to promote real connection. Not only does team cohesion increase the success of your organization, it also improves the sustainability of your success. Employees that feel supported, appreciated, heard and connected are free to own their unique value and thrive in their roles. By implementing these strategies, you enable each employee to reach their full capacity, positioning your team to excel in the long term and become more than the sum of its parts. x Source: Qualtrics, LLC. BY: Jasmine Ball CAREERS
Surviving and Thriving After the Pink Slip
E
ven if you’ve never received a pink slip, there is nothing quite as alarming and unsettling as clocking into a routine day at work only for it to be cut off abruptly upon the bold receipt of a notice of termination. You probably can imagine the ego blow and devastation such news can cause, especially if that person didn’t see it coming. One is left scrambling, thinking up new ways to quickly replace the income that
was lost, figuring out how to reveal the news to loved ones, and somehow pick up the pieces of the aftermath quite literally, emotionally, and financially. If you or someone you know has recently been fired or laid off, and wondering how to start thriving again after losing a job, here’s how to start picking up the pieces of the aftermath so you can see longevity in your career and come out on top in the end regardless of if it was your fault or not.
ADOPT PHYSICAL COPING STRATEGIES Not only is it helpful to find healthy ways of emotional coping, it’s also very necessary to indulge in physical coping strategies to get through challenging times. Having healthy coping skills is key to dealing with any anxiety and stress. Some helpful ways of coping physically include practicing relaxation techniques like mindful meditation or breathing exercises. You can also practice getting regular exercise, setting weekly goals, and making a to do list. By adopting healthy coping skills, you can start to build emotional resilience, take your power back, and replenish whatever faith, hope, and confidence that was shaken.
LEAN INTO YOUR NETWORK When you have clarity around what you hope to do next in your life and career, lean into your network by asking
EMBRACE THE CAREER TRANSITION The best thing you can do if you’ve been let go from your job is to find the silver lining and embrace the new transition in your career. Now is a great time to reevaluate what you want out of your life and career. Did you truly love the work you did, the company, coworkers, or other aspects of the workplace? Have you been wanting to go back
for support from your friends and family. If money is tight, sometimes you’ll have to take whatever opportunity you can get quickly until you can secure the “stretch” opportunity of your dreams. PROCESS YOUR EMOTIONS Receiving a pink slip is a very unsettling experience. It can deliver an emotional blow that extends beyond one’s immediate financial concerns. To protect your mental health, take the necessary time to process your emotions and find coping strategies to navigate through all of what you may be feeling, whether that’s shock, anxiety, loss of hope, sadness, anger, uncertainty, and doubt. You can get your emotions out by journaling, a pep talk, crying out loud if you need to, or by practicing other forms of therapy to help you regulate your emotions. After initially releasing all of the big emotions, you should start to have more clarity around what you now desire for your life.

LET THIS BE A
SUMMER
S
to Savor! BY: Hadley Roy H. LEISURE
ummer can feel fleeting, especially if you live in a northern climate. So figuring out how to make the most of it can be daunting. Below you’ll find five ideas for travel, activities, healthpromoting-behaviors to make this summer and the next worth savoring!
1. Try Tech Free Days
One easy way to help make the most of every moment is staying away from activities that take lots of time and provide little benefit. While smartphones can
certainly be useful, they’re also prone to eating up hours that could be spent on more exciting or edifying activities. This summer, try tech free days (maybe play on the alliteration and go for Tuesdays and Thursdays) to give yourself some time back in the day for enjoying the finer things in life!
2. Get Cooking
Another great way to truly savor this wonderful season is to enjoy the bounty that nature has to offer in the kitchen or at the grill. Summer brings
desired behavioral changes into small steps that are obvious, attractive, easy, and satisfying. Try implementing this approach on a variety of topics listed in this article like screen-free time, a new outdoor hobby, or cooking more of your own meals.
3. Enjoy Nature
Summer is a great season to get outside! Spending time in the sun can be a great way to recharge and make memories. There is, of course, the classic beach trip. Walking barefoot on the sand is calming, fun, and a great workout. Plus, there’s lots of opportunities for family fun by the water. If beaches aren’t available in your area, try finding a hiking trail or metropark. Sand, rocks, mulch, or grass—time outside is sure to pay dividends.
4. DIY
A great way to keep the summer feeling going past the end of the warm season is DIY projects. By taking advantage of mild weather to work on fun home projects, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor all throughout the year. Consider building raised garden beds, making some new home decor, or refreshing an outdoor space like a patio.
5. Go Atomic
While January is the classic season for self improvement goals, there’s no reason not to take advantage of summer’s can-do feeling to build some new habits. Consider using the atomic framework, pioneered by James Clear, to reach your goals. His book Atomic Habits recommends breaking down your

A NECESSARY DIALOGUE ABOUT
WOMEN I MONEY & PROMOTIONS
n the professional landscape, the corporate ladder is a hierarchy that many employees scrap and scrape to climb. Rising in the ranks of promotions within the workplace is a task that’s still particularly challenging for women—despite the fact that there’s a ton of research which proves how when women are in senior management positions and on organizational boards, the companies generate higher shareholder returns.
BY: Lee McCalla MONEY
Today, we’re taking a look at the disconnect between women and the corporate company structure with the hopes to spark a dialogue around advocacy and career advancement. Join us in this open dialogue about women, money, promotions and the powers and politics at play.
THE STATE OF WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE
An article in the Harvard Business Review entitled "Why Men Still Get More Promotions Than Women" revealed that despite comparable experience and education, men still outpace women by 15% in company promotions. Other studies show that almost
HOW WOMEN CAN BUILD THE SUPPORT THEY NEED AT WORK AND AT HOME GET A MENTOR:
The Harvard Business Review article revealed that many women seeking promotions had mentors. These mentors were great at giving advice and helping the women identify their strengths and weaknesses. I love this John Maxwell quote about the value mentorship, "One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination."
Since 2010, things have only slightly improved for women. Many still lack access to the right resources and struggle with the gender pay gap, promotions, and raises that their male colleagues receive. Corporate disenchantment prompts many to leave the traditional corporate space, and the women who venture into the world of entrepreneurship may still grapple with similar issues. For this reason, we must never stop learning. As women, it’s important that we identify the overall corporate structure that makes receiving promotions and raises such a complex task and then seek to understand how to obtain raises and promotions from our corporation as well as learn the
EMBRACE YOUR “GIRL POWER”:
We must be honest about the personality differences between men and women. Often, women believe they must work harder to gain the attention of upper management, but this is only one piece of the puzzle. Women need a solid strategy when vying for promotions and raises. This strategy cannot be a one-size-fitsall game plan. It must be unique and emphasize the women's value to the company—a value that cannot be replicated or imitated by another employee. In addition to an effective strategy, women must have a high company I.Q. That means understanding
SECURE A SPONSOR:
Sometimes women need more than just mentors, since in most cases mentors don't possess the influence needed to help secure promotions. In the workplace, women also need sponsors to aid in their career advancement. If you didn’t know, a sponsor is a high-level executive or colleague at your company who can help support and promote you. Many might discover that sponsorship isn't as easy to secure. You can start by identifying leaders within your organization who share your same values and goals, and then networking with them to help build a strong relationship.
way internal management works and what qualities the executive board values in employees.
KNOW YOUR NETWORK IS YOUR NET WORTH:
Next, we must be honest about the importance of the right connections on the promotion journey. Relationships with the "right" people are the key to corporate success.
the company's overall vision, organizational structure, and how they fit into it. If women are truthful with each other and nurture relationships that will help them grow throughout their careers, then they will achieve success. x

that echoed from our table before our meals arrived, April was transparent about challenges that she has overcome to arrive in this season of her life.
At the point where the suppressed painful memories of her abuse surfaced, April says she was in a volatile marriage. April, who learned how to sew from her seamstress mother, possessed an abundance of creativity since childhood. Still, she says that it was during her turbulent marriage that art became a refuge. With a natural curiosity, she tuned in to PBS television to learn how to create quilts. She also pressed into her childhood inclination to play in dirt by learning how to work with clay to create sculptures. In addition to her faith in Christ, April says her artwork gave her the courage to walk away from her marriage and to pursue the life she desired for herself and for her family. “Quilting became my saving grace.”
Her work is currently on display at the Southfield City Hall as part of the Conversations in Fiber exhibit and at the Scarab Club for the Glida Snowden Memorial exhibition in Detroit. Now, she is preparing for the debut of her newest work which is a part of the Afrofuturism and Quilts exhibit at Michigan State University’s Union Gallery in Lansing, Michigan. In addition to exploring aspects of quiltmakers’ identity and experiences, the exhibit delves into the quilters' beliefs, hopes, and
If you believe that being an artist and educator is a superpower, April’s strength is in making those who are rendered invisible by society visible through her artwork. “I want people to be deeply moved when they see my work,” April said. “If they are thinking, asking questions, or crying, then I know that I have done my job.” To learn more about April and her work, visit www. aprilanue.com. x Robin Michelle Wilson is a published children’s author, greeting card designer, keynote speaker, business leader, and an educator. imaginings of a liberated Afrofuture.

“I'm a giver of gifts. I've always been a giver,” April said. At age eight, April recalls sewing a clutch purse for her favorite teacher. She retraced the memory of walking through an empty elementary school hallway to give her teacher the handmade purse. What was a proud moment for her soon turned into a traumatic experience. On her way back to class, April recalls being pulled into an empty room by a man, who raped her and sped off once he heard school staff nearby. “This was the 60’s. I was so young. I didn’t really understand what happened to me.”
More than 20 years later, April has masterfully fashioned quilts to honor leaders like Civil Rights Movement icon Rosa Parks and former President Barack Hussein Obama. She has also created a quilt titled “Strange Fruit” to remember the Black men, women, and children who lost their lives to lynchings in the American South, a monumental work of art that took her three years to complete, and has been displayed at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American Museum among other prominent spaces throughout the United States. “I want to create artwork that makes people think about what’s going on in the world,” April said. “A lot of people are sleepwalking—it’s time to wake up.”

CONFIDENCE MAKEUP TIPS FOR LONGEVITY
BY: Rechelle Andrews BEAUTY
I
n the world of beauty, confidence is the key ingredient that never goes out of style. It's that radiant glow that emanates from within, transcending trends and capturing attention. When it comes to makeup, the goal isn't just to enhance features, it's about boosting confidence and empowering individuals to feel like their best self. As we delve into the realm of longevity where timeless elegance meets modern flair, here are some makeup tips to help you turn heads with unwavering confidence.
INVEST IN QUALITY PRODUCTS:
1
2
In the pursuit of longevity, less is often more. Embrace the beauty of minimalism by enhancing your natural features rather than masking them. A sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer evens out one’s skin tone without weighing it down, allowing your skin to breathe and radiate its natural glow. Enhance your eyes with a coat of mascara and a subtle swipe of eyeliner for a timeless look that transcends fleeting trends.
MASTER THE ART OF BLENDING:
4
Seamless blending is the secret to achieving a flawless makeup look that stands the test of time. Whether you're blending eyeshadows for a sultry smokey eye or buffing out foundation for an airbrushed finish, mastering the art of blending is essential for achieving a polished appearance. Invest in high-quality makeup brushes and sponges to effortlessly blend products for a seamless transition between shades and textures.
5
While trends come and go, certain makeup looks stand the test of time, exuding timeless elegance and sophistication. Experiment with classic makeup trends such as a bold red lip, winged eyeliner, or soft, romantic curls. These iconic looks have graced the silver screen and adorned the pages of fashion magazines for decades, epitomizing the essence of longevity in beauty.
PRACTICE SELF-CARE:

EMBRACE MINIMALISM:
3
Longevity in makeup lies in accentuating your best features in a way that complements your unique beauty. Whether it's your captivating eyes, radiant smile, or sculpted cheekbones, highlight them with precision and finesse. Experiment with contouring and highlighting techniques to define your facial structure and create dimension. A well-defined brow frames the face and adds a touch of sophistication, while a flattering lip color completes the look with a pop of color.
EXPERIMENT WITH TIMELESS TRENDS:
True beauty begins with selfcare, nurturing both body and mind to radiate confidence from within. Prioritize skincare to maintain a healthy complexion and create the perfect canvas for makeup application. Incorporate relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga to alleviate stress and promote overall wellbeing. Remember, confidence is the ultimate accessory, and nurturing it through self-care rituals ensures its longevity.
In conclusion, achieving head-turning confidence through makeup is not just about following fleeting trends, it's about embracing timeless elegance and enhancing your natural beauty in a way that exudes confidence and sophistication. By investing in quality products, embracing minimalism, accentuating your best features, mastering the art of blending, experimenting with timeless trends, and practicing self-care, you can unlock the secret to longevity in beauty and turn heads with unwavering confidence. x Rechelle Andrews is a career woman, skincare/makeup enthusiast, and Career Mastered Magazine contributor. Just like building a strong foundation for a lasting structure, investing in quality makeup products forms the cornerstone of your beauty routine. Just hold on, and remember that you are not what you have experienced. Your reward is coming. You can count on it. Not one drop of your self-worth is based upon another person’s acceptance of you. Everything you have experienced so far this year has prepared you for better days ahead, and to set you up for the win. The decisions you make today will determine if you win or lose. Don’t stand on the sidelines wishing and wanting! HERE ARE FIVE KEYS TO COUNTING YOURSELF WORTHY: 1.
Believe you are worthy!
2. Wear the helmet of hope and know that with God, all things are possible. 3. Count yourself IN every day. 4. Keep your eye on the prize and be patient. 5. Be grateful for every good thing you have achieved and help others.
Keep the faith, stay focused, perform, and count yourself worthy to be in the game! Internationally recognized HR executive, thought leader, author and career strategist, Dr. Lisa J. Lindsay Wicker shares contemporary relevant work life experiences and empowering principles with her clients as demonstrated in her books, The Winning Spirit, Power Play! and her award-winning release - Capacity: Women Shattering the Limits - NOW! With her dynamic approach to life and her signature style, she connects people across the world and finds her mission to be that of helping others to get the most out of their work lives and companies to create value.
