LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

SECRETS TO BUSINESS SUCCESS CAREER MASTERED 2023 TOP ENTREPRENEURIAL WOMEN TO WATCH

B

efore it was fashionable to have a side-hustle while working a 9 to 5 corporate gig, I opened my first entrepreneurial business in 1990. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset and a desire to use my full capacity (title of my most recent award-winning book). Since that time, I’ve gone on to successfully master my corporate career to retirement and become a serial entrepreneur. Research shows that Black women have been forward-thinking entrepreneurs who have repeatedly changed the course of history and are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs. Yet, the lack of resources makes their entrepreneurship journey challenging. There’s more work to do here. The Small Business Administration says for the past two decades, women-owned businesses are growing at twice the rate of all other businesses with 10.1 million women-owned businesses employing 13 million Americans and generating $1.9 trillion in annual revenues in 2008 alone. At Career Mastered Magazine, we want to recognize, celebrate, and honor entrepreneurial women. In our first annual Top Entrepreneurial Women to Watch Issue, we showcase the accomplished, ambitious, inspirational, and successfully intriguing women in various industries. She is also a resilient, creative, and talented woman who brings diverse economic value and results to the marketplace while making success look easy. Each woman showcased has stepped into their power. We celebrate these women who are living life on purpose. Allow their examples to inspire you to develop clear intentions and actions of success on your terms. This issue gives you entrepreneurial topics to explore such as The Fastest Growing Franchises for Women, The Art of a Business Start-up, Marketing 101: How to Attract the Right Customers and Rebuff Wrong Ones, The Career Mastered Bookshelf, The Importance of a Supplier Diversity Program, as well as Fashion, Finance, Beauty and more.

Between quarterly issues, we keep you informed through the Career Mastered website and our bimonthly newsletter. There we update you with career stories, photos, events and more. Be sure to stay tuned as we prepare for our 10th Anniversary celebration of the Career Mastered Summit & Awards which will be held in Detroit, Michigan in 2024. Have a great Fall Season!

DISCOVER THE SECRET TO SCALING YOUR BUSINESS

Hey Queen:

IT'S YOUR BUSINESS, TIME TO MAKE YOUR BY: Marci Bryant, MBA BUSINESS

MOVE!

Let’s face it. We’re in a post-pandemic recession with inflation on nearly everything but our salaries. Some of us work multiple jobs just to keep up with all of our current financial responsibilities, while nervously depending on stocks and retirement plans to secure our future.

e dream of a day when we can get paid exactly what we want to do the work we love with the clients we choose at whatever time works best for us — without worrying that someone else has the ability to come and snatch it all away from us. 11 C a r e e r M a s t e r e d • FA L L 2 0 2 3

But what if that dream life was closer than you think? Skilled professionals are creating multiple streams of income by freelancing, consulting, and coaching. If you’re a skilled professional that’s ready to step out and make your move as a business owner, you should know that the secret to scaling is building a system to automate your processes so that you can consistently deliver high-quality customer experiences. In this chat with Melanie Oates, founder of Melden Tech, you will learn exactly what systems you need to focus on to build a strong foundation for a business that makes you money while you sleep. Melden Tech focuses on streamlining systems and helping servicebased coaches grow to the six figure mark and beyond by building backend CRM systems and developing business process maps. Career Mastered: How do systems support business growth? Melanie: In order for you to grow, you need to have a system in place that helps you develop and automate the process of how people do business with you. What should happen if somebody wants to work with you? What does it look like when the work between you and your client is completed? What’s your process for getting reviews? How are you going to understand your churn rate? How can you decide the number of customers you need to reach X amount of dollars? If you don't have systems in place, you won’t be able to answer any of those questions with confidence. You're going to be making decisions blindly, and that's going to do your business and your clients a huge disservice. Without a system in place, you will have a hard time understanding what you need to do to grow. Career Mastered: What type of business processes are essential for business growth?

Melanie: I always recommend that they get started by documenting what they're doing. You need to focus on your most impactful service and write down or record every step of working with your customer to deliver your desired result. Even if it's jumbled together, that helps your system strategist really identify where the gaps are in the way that your business functions.

Hiring the wrong employees can be very costly for businesses. It can decrease productivity and performance, increase turnover and negatively impact team morale, customer experience, and damage the reputation of the company.

Develop an Effective Hiring Strategy A well-thought-out hiring strategy is crucial to identifying the best candidates. Determine the sourcing channels that are most likely to reach your target talent pool. Leverage online job boards, professional networks, referrals, and industry events. Consider partnering with recruitment agencies or utilizing talent search platforms. Tailor your approach based on the role and the Shortlist candidates who demonstrate potential for desired profile of the success in the role. ideal employee. Screen for the Best Employee Implement a thorough screening process to assess candidates' qualifications and experience. Review resumes and applications meticulously (focusing on relevant accomplishments and alignment with the job requirements). Utilize pre-employment assessments or skill tests to gauge technical abilities. Consider conducting initial phone or video interviews to assess communication skills, motivation, and cultural fit.

Utilize Behavioral Interviews Behavioral interviews provide valuable insights into a candidate's past behavior and their potential future performance. Create questions that prompt candidates to share specific examples of how they have handled challenges, collaborated with others, or demonstrated leadership. Look for evidence of problem-solving skills, adaptability, and alignment with your organization's values. Encourage candidates to provide detailed responses, allowing you to assess their abilities and cultural fit more effectively. Assess Cultural Fit and Values Alignment Cultural fit is a critical factor in hiring the best employee. Assess how well candidates align with your company's values, work environment, and team dynamics. During interviews, inquire about their preferred work culture, their approach to collaboration, and how they have handled conflicts in the past. Involve relevant team members in the evaluation process to gather different perspectives. Consider organizing informal meetings or team activities to assess how candidates interact and communicate with others. Verification Conduct a thorough reference check and validate candidates' claims to gain further insights. Contact previous employers or professional contacts to verify the accuracy of the candidate's qualifications,

performance, and work ethic. Ensure compliance with legal requirements and privacy policies during the background verification process. Hiring the best employee requires a well-structured and comprehensive approach. By defining the position, creating engaging job advertisements, conducting thorough evaluations, and assessing cultural fit, you can increase the likelihood of identifying and hiring top talent. Remember that hiring is an ongoing process, and continuous improvement of your hiring practices will help your business thrive in the long run. x

COME TOGETHER IN SOLIDARITY

f there was ever a time in history where women are on the rise, the time is now. Still, there is a need for access to adequate professional resources and mentorship for women business leaders. In July, Career Mastered Women’s Leadership Network launched Affinity Groups to further foster collaboration, networking, and to build synergy among women professionals globally. Velita A. Faulk, who has more than 28 years of corporate and business experience, was recently appointed to co-lead Career Mastered’s Affinity Groups, which she oversees with business leader Dr. Miranda Hill Jones. Lendell McEwen is the Career Mastered Membership Director.

“It’s [entrepreneurship] in my blood,” Faulk said. “My father was a police officer, but he always owned property and had side businesses.” As the owner of Gateway Notary Development Services, a company providing training for Michigan notaries, Faulk says her entrepreneurial journey

started when she and her husband decided to turn their love of ballroom dancing into a business. “I teach ballroom dancing with my husband and that is the way that we got entrepreneurship. We opened a boutique venue,” said Faulk “and were one of the first to do it in Michigan.” When the COVID-19 pandemic took front stage, Faulk had to close her

business. “We were really sad about having to close our studio because we practiced dance there and taught dance classes there,” said Faulk. However, this step led to the opportunity for her to open a notary service and she has not looked back. “I'm not one to sit still. So I started my notary business. I also teach notary basics for Michigan notaries.” Now, she is joining forces with other women business leaders to share the lessons that she has learned along her entrepreneurial journey. Within the Career Mastered Affinity Groups, Faulk’s goal is to empower and uplift other business women who are at different stages in their careers.

“My vision is to bring ladies together for classes and workshops so that they can have an avenue for engaging in ways that contribute to their growth.” As women embark on their entrepreneurial journey, one of the challenges that many women business leaders face is accessing mentorship resources and information to effectively scale their businesses. “We, as women, tend to try to wear every hat and that's not a

smart way to work. We end up spending time on things that are really slowing down our progress.”

In an effort to support women business leaders to consistently gain traction in their respective careers, Career Mastered Affinity Groups will meet virtually monthly and in-person quarterly to network, share professional resources, and to engage in conversations that promote understanding and growth. HOW TO

I

STAND When it gets difficult on the entrepreneurial journey

t’s said that the fastest way from point A to point B is a straight shot. However, when looking at the road to success in entrepreneurship this is far from the case. Difficulty is inevitable. The typical entrepreneurial journey is filled with lots of highs and lows, turns and a roller coaster of emotions (sometimes all in the same day). Use these tips to STAND when it gets difficult or you’ve hit rock bottom in your entrepreneurial journey.

S - SELF ASSESS

Take a moment to self reflect to approach the set back with as much logic as possible. Recount what led to the challenge you’re faced with at this time. Was there something you could’ve done differently? Could this have been avoided if you communicated better expectations with the customer? Is there a certain policy you should’ve implemented in your terms? Would things be better if you continued taking revenue-generating actions instead of taking time off when you landed a big sale? Take a self assessment so you can self correct and get your head back in the game during a difficult moment.

C a r e e r M a s t e r e d • FA L L 2 0 2 3

T - TALK IT OUT

Confide in a colleague, mentor, therapist or loved one. Tell them what you’re experiencing and how it makes you feel. You may find that you’re not alone or that the problem isn’t as big as it feels. Sometimes all it takes is getting an outside perspective to help you not only feel better, but also get a fresh take on possible options that might help you overcome the adversity.

body YES, respectfully decline by saying no. For example, you can say no by replying, "I don't have the capacity to help you at the moment."

D - DECIDE TO DIG DEEP

Well, no matter what you’re faced with, you will always have A - ASK FOR HELP the power of decision. Remember, it’s not Although entrepreneurship over! Most athletes’ lives have been regulated since high school, and when they get to college, it’s regulated more. ody Trierweiler is the owner of CNC Fitness and Nutrition Expert Company and Jody’s Fit Life. She’s passionate about assisting others in living a healthier life by helping them identify areas for change and improvement in fitness and nutrition.

Since 2008, Jody has been on a mission to spread a message of better health through fitness. She began teaching classes

"My live segments were having an impact on people and their exercise habits. In 2017, I was given my own TV show on Comcast Xfinity called Jody’s Fit Life, and we filmed 3 seasons of the show focusing on ways to improve your health around Michigan." Some show locations included a float spa, indoor rock climbing, eating crickets for sustainable protein, and goat yoga. You can still catch the old episodes on Xfinity. When covid shut the world down in 2020, Jody took advantage of the downtime and invested $10,000 towards furthering her education. She

became certified as a Nutritional Consultant, Nutrition Coach, and Weight Loss Coach all on top of her bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine. "This additional training opened the door for me to create my website, Jodysfitlife.com, where I provide practitioner grade supplements and valuable information. Clients can also work with me to meet their weight loss goals." Jody continues to provide valuable information through her weekly tv segments on Live In The D.

A comment from one viewer stated— "Jody we loved your segment today on hydration and how our bodies absorb water and minerals. That was the most invaluable segment ever on network TV, thank you!" She views the fitness classes she teaches as a way to stay accountable with her own fitness goals. "Motivating others to push themselves and become stronger brings me great joy!" In February 2023, an 8-day migraine led Jody to the ER where the doctors discovered that she had a bleeding mass in her brain. "I’d have to wait over two days for an MRI and diagnosis. The questions began swirling in my mind: Do I have cancer? Am I going to die? What about my boys who are 16 and 19? And as quickly as those thoughts

came, I shut them down. The Bible says to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and so that’s what I did. I told everyone who entered my hospital room that there would be NO negative talk, no crying, no sadness. I would only entertain positivity. I began to pray and declare that I will live and not die, again from the Bible. Every scripture that I could think of about healing, health, life and hope were all I would declare. I sang worship songs nonstop as much as I could while battling the most painful headache of my life." After three days, the doctor came into her room with the MRI results. He talked for about three minutes before saying "It’s benign."

"I threw both hands into the air and yelled, ‘Thank You Jesus’ with all ten people in my room." She had brain surgery two days later to remove a large pituitary tumor, and spent eight days in the hospital (three days in the ICU). "I went home on 9 medications. It wasn’t easy. I’m still recovering. I will use my experience to empower others in difficult situations, to motivate and inspire, and offer HOPE. My healthy lifestyle was paramount in my recovery, both physically and mentally." Her plans for the future of Jody’s Fit Life include more philanthropy, and a media platform to share nutrition information. "God has a big plan for spreading the truth about food and fitness and He’s going to use me to reach millions of people." x

We are living in a world that has opened the door of opportunity and possibility for millions of people. The mindset toward traditional work has changed. Work anniversaries and milestone birthdays can encourage reflection on where one is in their career and where one would like to see themselves in the next chapter of their life.

PURPOSE VS PASSION In his bestselling book “Start with Why,” Simon Sinek describes the center of the Golden Circle as the Why. Few people or organizations can clearly articulate their why. Your why is your cause, your purpose, and it’s what you believe.

Some have confused this with passion, but passion can be driven by emotions and may not support a person when things are rough. Beliefs are powerful drivers in our lives so much so that strongly held beliefs can motivate people to do amazing things. Take the time to identify your core beliefs, values, and discover your purpose. These are things that will move you to action, propel you forward, and support your continued growth and development throughout the ebb and flow of business.

CREATE AN EXIT STRATEGY

Map out your course. Put pen to paper or use whatever electronic device of your choice to develop your plan for the next 12 months. Begin

a savings account specifically for your business. Calculate the cost of the LLC or 501(c)(3), taxes, website, content management, administrative support, additional training and/or certifications, and professional associations that may be relevant to your new field. Take a good look at where your current employer will be in the next 12 months. Will there be an acquisition, or a large project starting or ending? Consider these and other things related to your current field. You want your transition to be smooth, when possible, so as to not burn any bridges.

DON’T GO IT ALONE

During the development of the exit strategy, begin enlisting the help of a business coach. You may have the expertise to start the business, but a coach will ensure that you build on the right foundation. Also, enlist the

support of several different mentors. Some of these mentors will cost. However, do your due diligence and select quality people that will empower you towards growth. Determine the different phases of your business to support what type of mentors you will need. Take advantage of federal, state, and local resources. Your local Small Business Administration (SBA) can provide guidance, and education often at little to no cost. Time goes by quickly. It’s been a year since Serena announced her “evolution from tennis”. She has discovered her current purpose, which is to continue to grow her family and have a second child. Ask yourself, “What do you want to be doing a year from now?” It is your turn to embrace your purpose and move forward with your evolution from corporate to entrepreneur. x Stephanie Hancock is the Owner of Career Rise, LLC. eing an entrepreneur isn’t easy. However, it’s become increasingly popular in recent years. Still reeling from the effects of the pandemic, many people have turned to entrepreneurship to supplement their income with side hustles, by tapping into the gig economy or by creating fullfledged businesses to make ends meet.

The economic shift from the traditional workforce to business creation has strongly impacted minority groups. Now women, particularly black women, are at the forefront of entrepreneurship. After taking an in depth look at why entrepreneurship may be on the rise for black women, here’s what we’ve come to know.

A WILLINGNESS TO RE-INVEST THEIR INCOME.

According to The Harvard Business Review, black women are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the country. In 2021, studies revealed that black women created 17% of newly formed businesses. Furthermore, 61% of these women fund their own businesses despite having less income than other demographics. These numbers reflect that despite facing challenges on the road to entrepreneurship, black women are ready and willing to be business leaders in America.

PREDICTIONS for 2023

BY: Hadley Roy H. VENTURE CAPITAL

With rising rates and changes in banking regulations, most investors are sitting on funds and playing it safe. Crunchbase reported that “the operative word is down.” After contractions throughout most markets and sectors in Q1 of 2023, most VC firms are still using caution with their investments. This is driven in part by concern over the viability of new ventures in the current economic climate and partially by fundraising challenges due

1. CAUTION IS IN

enture Capital (VC) investments can be a hard thing to predict, especially in times of economic uncertainty. But for entrepreneurs looking to start their own business and follow their dreams, an understanding of VC trends is critical. Career Mastered looked to the experts at Franklin Templeton, Crunchbase, and Forbes to bring seven venture capital predictions and trends for 2023.

50 C a r e e r M a s t e r e d • FA L L 2 0 2 3

to VC partners rebalancing their portfolios.

4. COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE STRUGGLING

With most firms keeping investment to a cautious minimum, cash-on-hand has increased for the VC firms who have built up considerable stockpiles since constricting their outflows in mid 2022. Additionally, Forbes reports that VC fundraising was up significantly in 2022 especially for funds with more than $1,000,000,000 in assets. Crunchbase reports that in early 2023, this has led to many VC funds essentially sitting on money while waiting out the uncertain market.

The rise of work-from-home and persistently high interest rates make commercial real estate a particularly tricky space at the moment. Franklin Templeton lists office space and malls as “weakening” sectors for 2023 and indicates that there is persistent downward pressure on commercial real estate values - leading most real estate portfolios to need a “remodel.” Anticipate that VC firms will act accordingly, and push towards stronger industries while moving away from shrinking markets like office space and brick-and-mortar retail.

3. SELF-STORAGE & HOUSING GOING STRONG

5. SOME VALUATIONS RECOVERING

2. STANDBY RESOURCES ARE UP

Every market favors certain industries and doesn’t favor others. Franklin Templeton reports that in 2023 housing (manufactured, single-family, and multi-family) and self storage are robust industries primed for growth. This is likely due both to major housing shortages that have persisted since 2020, and to those housing shortages often leading people to select smaller dwellings and need somewhere to store excess belongings.

Forbes reports that after sharp drops in valuations throughout 2022, seed valuations – where companies and investors agree on a value and distribute the first round of stocks – are on the rise once again in 2023. However, both Crunchbase and Forbes indicate that laterstage valuations continue to face downward pressure after funding dropped 63% in 2022.

6. DIVERSITY WINS

Forbes also reports that funds managed by women and people of color are likely to outperform as the market becomes more sensitive to the value of diversity and the important perspectives it brings. Likewise, Forbes anticipates that women-owned startups are also more likely to receive funding due to these same factors and emerging data that women-owned companies tend to beat market performance.

7. THINGS WILL BOUNCE BACK SOON

While the market remains tumultuous, Forbes experts say that the VC landscape is likely to improve in the later half of 2023, as the economy improves and funds start investing more readily once again. Crunchbase reports similar predictions, indicating that late 2023 and early 2024 will likely see VC investments increasing as the economy recovers. x

Do you judge her imperfections or celebrate her uniqueness? Do you compare her to others or applaud her for setting the standard? If we are honest with ourselves, many of us can’t help but think a combination of these thoughts when we are left to ourselves.

And that's okay. However, when all is said and done, it’s best to land in a place where you allow yourself to think thoughts of growth and improvement only if it supports what is best for your overall well-being. When you balance improvement-thoughts with the power of acceptance, you ultimately give yourself the grace to be and do what

makes you happy and feel beautiful. The concept of beauty has evolved, like everything else, over the years… especially from the perceptions introduced by the media and society. Several questions come to mind when thinking about beauty past and present. Like, what is the true definition of beauty? What constitutes the beauty within versus outer beauty? How does one’s internal perception of beauty measure up to what’s seen as beautiful? With these questions in mind, I offer my thoughts. Not to sway any opinion, but rather to help you open your mind to a different perspective.

THE DEFINITION OF BEAUTY Hey, Siri! Define beauty. “A combination of qualities such as shape, color or form that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially sight.” Hey, Media! Define beauty. 1980’s – A person with an athletic build who was lean, strong, and toned. Women who had an hourglass figure and toned legs, arms, and stomach were celebrated. 1990’s - The beauty ideal were women who were thin, pale and young-looking. Big breasts started to be popular, and breast augmentation rates were on the rise in the US. 2000’s – We start to explore beauty in a more inclusive way,

adopting the word “inclusion” to open the definition of beauty forward into “acceptance” and those who are “unique” and/or internally beautiful in personality and/or good deeds. I’m glad we evolved in the right direction. Hey, beautiful (you)… define beauty. This is where you simply say out loud - “Me” of course!

BEAUTY INSIDE As we evolve as humans and open our minds to the wonderful creativity that God displays in all creation, we have thankfully come to realize that being beautiful inside resonates through to one’s outward appearance in many ways. How you present to the world in your attitude, beliefs and style is NOT governed by the perception of the beholder, but rather in your perception of yourself. THE ENTREPRENEURIAL WOMAN

HER PRESENCE AND STYLE MATTERS

T

he entrepreneurial woman is resilient, resourceful and solution-oriented. In her line of work, she is required to develop, organize, and manage a business venture while taking on financial risks in the hope of a profit. The modern entrepreneurial woman of today also understands that in addition to being a “boss”, she is responsible for her presence and style… which ultimately make up her personal brand.

BY: Angianein Wallace STYLE Personal brand matters! It is your reputation and your identifying mark. It is what you’re known for and your lasting impression on others. Presenting a clear and consistent brand can create an unforgettable experience to those that you connect with, which could lead to many doors of opportunity.

66 C a r e e r M a s t e r e d • FA L L 2 0 2 3

Developing a strategic personal brand is a smart way to establish a position as an “authority” in any industry and elevate your credibility. Your brand is the combination of how you see yourself plus how others see you. Presence and style are important components within the branding equation. It is well known that people do business with people they like. How you present your brand position can increase your influence and your bottom line. As an entrepreneurial woman, in the business of image consulting and wardrobe styling, I understand the path to a value adding brand. When it comes to personal presence and style, you need to be consistent, trust yourself and be authentic. Here’s how you can do just that.

BE CONSISTENT

Practicing self-care daily is a great way to proactively avoid all the little things that can “cramp your style”. One suggestion is to start your day with a proven routine that is aligned with your focus and that creates positive energy. Also, consider scheduling standard appointments for your healthcare, skincare, hair and nails as a suitable way to stay updated on self-maintenance. This supports your efforts as a boss-lady to stay READY so you won’t have to get ready.

TRUST YOURSELF

You are your personal brand. Trust that you have everything you need to achieve your financial goals, dreams and build credible relationships RIGHT NOW. Create a personal brand that is uplifting and allows balance in your life. To accomplish this, look to align

yourself with other peers, business leaders, or sponsors that complement your style. Establishing a trusted tribe is beneficial, as they can help sharpen your interpersonal skills and help you to avoid blind spots. These are important factors when building trust with yourself and others.

BE AUTHENTIC

In order to be authentic you have to have some idea of who you are at the core. To know yourself is an intentional action. I believe that “Style Speaks Louder Than Words®”. Your style and presence is your reputation and how you are known. Make a habit of being PRESENT everywhere. The

point of power is always in the present moment. Be yourself and allow your essence to exist, and opportunity will find you. Improving or establishing your personal brand is a journey. No matter where you are in the process it is a rewarding venture! x

THE PERFECT HOME OFFICE SET-UP BY: Paige Cerulli ENTREPRENEURSHIP

How to design your space for maximum productivity

s an entrepreneur, your office space plays a key role in your success. A welldesigned office can help to maximize productivity and keep you focused. It can also help you feel motivated and excited about your business.

Setting yourself up for entrepreneurial success starts with creating the perfect home office setup. Use these design tips to give your home office space a makeover to boost your productivity and motivation.

Make the Most of Limited Space Space may be limited in your home, but you can still create an office that feels roomy and welcoming. Christian Klinge, Innovation Director for Rockfon Sounds Beautiful, explains that when you’re working with limited space, it’s important to buy functional office pieces that don’t take up much room. “A Murphy’s desk, similar to a Murphy’s bed, is pulled out from a wall, making it a piece of furniture that doesn’t always need to be out,” he says. The versatile design is ideal for working from a room serving multiple purposes, like a bedroom or guest room.

Klinge also encourages entrepreneurs to consider using more transparent furniture. “When you can see through something, it appears as though it really isn’t taking up that much space,” he says. “Consider a desk or chair that is transparent, as this can really help to make the room you are working from not seem as small.”

a built-in motor, making it easy to swap between the sitting and standing position. “Set your desk and chair up so that your arms are straight out from your elbows when typing, with your shoulders hung loosely at your side and your eyes looking straight ahead,” she recommends. Scheller notes that a yoga-style chair may be a helpful addition. “Mine looks like a cradle and allows me to sit in a variety of poses throughout the day.”

Design for Ergonomics

Focus on What You See

An ergonomically-designed workplace can help to keep you comfortable and prevent strain and potential injury as you work. Stephanie Scheller, CEO and Founder of Grow Distrupt, breaks down the psychology behind business growth strategies and is a TEDx speaker and a two-time best-selling author. Scheller encourages entrepreneurs to invest in a sit/stand desk with

“Pay attention to what you see while working,” says Scheller. “If you’re working in a small space, it may be helpful to face a blank wall. This can actually help trigger the brain to stay on-task.” She also recommends using mood lighting and scents when working. “Having a specific color in the warm oranges, yellows or green family can help the brain stay energized and calm.” Similarly, use a candle or diffuser to circulate a specific scent during work hours. “Scent is strongly tied

to memory, so sooner or later your brain will Pavlov you into focus-mode when it smells that scent,” she says.

Stay Organized Clutter can quickly overwhelm a home office, and Scheller notes that clutter affects your brain’s ability to focus. Try to keep clutter contained to boxes under the desk, crates, filing cabinets and other organizers. Once you’ve set up your office for success, be sure to maintain it, especially when it comes to clutter. Scheller recommends having a plan for where everything goes and staying on top of cleaning. “Three minutes at the end of the day to plan for the next day and clean up your desk makes a world of difference,” she says. x

VISUALIZE YOUR SUCCESS

T

o succeed, you must see yourself as successful. Quantum physics studies have proven that the computer in our brain cannot tell the difference between what we see with our eyes and what we see with our imagination. That is why visualization, coupled with belief, is a remarkable tool. Applying it on a regular basis will literally change your mind, and over time, your life!

In 2018, I launched Career Mastered Magazine in New York City, Detroit, and Charlotte. Prior to doing so, I visualized a global magazine to advance women’s leadership. I began with the end in mind. I worried briefly about the resources to fund the vision. Then I got hung up on worrying about everything involved in getting to where I wanted to be.

Finally, my mind let go of how to accomplish the vision of what I wanted to accomplish. I didn’t struggle with the answers I thought I needed to make it happen. I just focused on the end. When I had a definite mental image of the outcome I wanted, I forged ahead and the first print and digital Career Mastered magazine to advance women’s leadership was released. It is now a global magazine. x

F I V E V I S UA L I Z AT I O N T I P S: 1. Be specific in your goal, such as, “By July 10, I will earn an extra $5,000.” A definite mental image of your goal and complete faith that it is yours is critical to your success. 2. Be realistic in your time frame and open to your goal’s appearance to be different than what you define. If you visualize yourself holding a check for $5,000, be open to that amount coming to you in smaller chunks over time. 3. Draw a picture of your goal or find an image in a magazine that represents your goal. Tape it to places in your home or office where you will see it repeatedly throughout the day. 4. Every morning and each evening, just before you retire, go to a quiet place, close your eyes, and relax completely.Invest at least five minutes visualizing your goal as already happening. See yourself enjoying the benefits. Make it real in your mind. 5. If doubts crowd in, close your eyes and take a deep breath. As you exhale, immediately fill your mind with the image of your goal.
