LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
RESILIENT
I
n 1987, Congress declared the entire month of March as National Women’s History Month. Along with this declaration, Congress passed additional propositions. between 1988 and 1994, which stated that a special Presidential Proclamation should be issued yearly, announcing that the month remains dedicated to women.
The Career Mastered Women’s History National Class of 2024 Leadership in Action Award Honorees and Diversity IMPACT 50 Award Honorees' yearbook is a part of this issue. We are thrilled to celebrate these remarkable women “Game-Changers”, May 15-16th in Detroit, MI. This year’s top award honoree is actress and humanitarian Holly Robinson Peete. The complete list of honorees will be available at www.careermastered.com. I am totally excited to welcome women to Detroit for a transformative experience of networking, celebration, and learning. Happy Women’s History Month! Enjoy!
We are turning 10 and making a full circle to the city where it all began. In 2014, the concept of Career Mastered was born, followed by launching a local women’s history month recognition program in Detroit. Since that time, Career Mastered has become a national recognition program and a global media platform. We’re thrilled to come home to celebrate and have chosen the theme “Resilient: I am Her!" for this year’s national presentation of Career Mastered Women’s History Leadership Summit & Awards and Legend’s Ball. Throughout history, women have overcome many barriers to make exceptional contributions in the marketplace to get where they are today. Research shows that women face large and small inequalities at home and at work. Women have been fighting for their rights for years and yet, while impacted, still stand. Standing in the face of adversity says a lot about how strong and resilient women are. Despite barriers placed in front of women, they continue to make changes for themselves and create paths for the next generation of girls.
Since its beginning, Career Mastered has celebrated women across multiple disciplines and industries during Women’s History Month to acknowledge the many and varied contributions women around the nation have made to America’s heritage. I stop to honor and recognize one such woman, the late Florine Mark. Florine was the Inaugural Career Mastered Living Legend. From the beginning of Career Mastered, she was committed to our mission. We salute you and your commitment to women and girls. I personally thank each of you who have journeyed with us to reach 10 years of advancing women’s leadership. It’s time to celebrate! Thank you!

AND ADVOCATING FOR YOURSELF:
SELF-ADVOCACY TIPS FROM AN EMPLOYMENT LAW EXPERT BY: Marci Bryant, MBA LEGAL
A
s more and more companies implement return-to-work mandates in Corporate America, many workers are dreading having to return to offices that are filled with things that they don’t miss. Things like office politics, countless greetings, forced fake smiles, uninteresting small talk, microaggressions from teammates and bullying behavior from leaders all threaten the peace that many have found working from the comfort of their own homes.
Attorney Chiquita Hall-Jackson is a published author and an employment law attorney that is dedicated to speaking up for workers whose voices have been silenced by workplace discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. She founded Hall Jackson and Associates, an employment law firm in Chicago, IL, after facing her own experiences with race and gender bias while growing her legal career. Career Mastered: Thanks so much for speaking with me about self-advocacy in the workplace. Your slogan is “Blow the Whistle”. Can you tell me how the phrase became a mantra for fighting workplace discrimination? Attorney Chiquita Hall-Jackson: I want to help people who don’t necessarily have enough to win in court, but need help figuring out how to get from underneath the poor treatment they are receiving in the workplace. I decided enough is enough, because it's just a lot of bullying and microaggressions that I don't believe people should be subjected to whether they have a legal standing to sue or not. I came up with Blow the Whistle to help educate workers and let them know their rights so that they will have the power to advocate for themselves. Career Mastered: You recently released a book called, ‘We Gon’ Be Alright: A Black Executive’s Guide to Navigating Workplace Dynamics.’ What was the inspiration behind this book? Attorney Chiquita Hall-Jackson: The goal of the book is ultimately to help people take their voice back in the workplace to
advocate for themselves, to know what's wrong or right, and all the things they need to consider prior to litigation. I discuss how to advocate for yourself starting with the interview, through the hiring process, while in the role and advancing up the corporate ladder, all the way to exiting the workplace gracefully with your reputation intact, and show people how to use that experience to negotiate a settlement agreement so that if they do have some down time before their next role, they have a financial cushion that isn’t causing them to dip into their savings or retirement. Career Mastered: What are some tips you can provide on selfadvocacy at various stages of hiring and employment? Attorney Chiquita Hall-Jackson: Ask about company culture, management styles, and how the position became available. Having a legal professional review your employment offer means you can spot corporate issues before they impact you and negotiate what you need to be satisfied in your role – even if the request might be outside of the company norms.

TAX PLANNING
for C-suite Executives
T
ax planning is an indispensable element for C-suite executives who play pivotal roles in steering the directions of their respective companies. Leadership, strategy formulation, and team management demands often relegate tax planning to the background. However, efficient tax planning is crucial, as it helps minimize tax liability and optimize wealth.
Understanding tax brackets is vital for C-suite executives. They impact wealth accumulation and preservation strategies. Efficiently utilizing tax deductions and credits becomes a significant factor in reducing taxable income and maximizing savings.

Moreover, giving due consideration to tax-advantaged retirement accounts not only assists in safeguarding one’s financial future but offers current tax relief. Capital gains tax planning, too, plays a crucial role, allowing executives to manage investment sales in a manner that can mitigate tax liabilities. Lastly, engaging with financial advisors is pivotal, ensuring executives navigate the intricate landscape of taxation with informed, strategic decisions that uphold and enhance their financial standing. TAXES ARE A LIABILITY Leadership figures in the C-suite must thoroughly understand their respective tax brackets. This plays a pivotal role in making financially savvy decisions. Being in a higher tax bracket correlates with a more significant tax burden. Possessing in-depth insights into these brackets facilitates strategic choices, such as income deferral to a subsequent tax year, potentially minimizing tax obligations when a lower bracket is applicable. Additionally, executives stand to gain substantially by identifying and taking advantage of appropriate tax deductions and credits. This encompasses deductions on business-associated expenses—like traveling, dining, entertainment, and home office expenditures—and applying credits for earned income and child tax. Proactively managing these deductions and credits allows executives to lower their taxable income, securing notable tax savings.
STRATEGIC PLANNING AND CONSULTATION Beyond understanding, strategic planning around tax-advantaged retirement accounts and capital gains taxes is pivotal. Contributing to tax-advantaged retirement accounts like 401(K)s and IRAs can reduce current taxable income. They also allow contributions to grow— tax-deferred—until retirement. Planning for capital gains tax is also essential when selling assets like stocks, bonds, or real estate. Engagement with qualified tax advisors is equally crucial. Advisors can provide valuable insights into structuring executive compensations efficiently, estate planning to ensure assets are transferred according to one’s wishes while minimizing tax liabilities and guiding charitable giving in a fulfilling and tax-efficient manner. For C-suite executives, diligent tax planning is not just a necessity but an integral part of intelligent wealth management and preservation. It is the foundation upon which sustainable financial growth and stability are built. It allows executives to navigate the multifaceted world of taxes efficiently and effectively. If you are a C-suite executive looking for individualized, high-touch financial and tax planning advice to optimize your wealth, consider scheduling a consultation with

id you know? The words “joy” and “rejoice” appear in The Bible over 300 times. That’s more than enough to show that we all strive to live a life of happiness and joy. However, many of us could fall short if we’re not intentional about carving out moments to feel great pleasure.
How to live a happier life
BY: Jody Trierweiler WELLNESS Abraham Lincoln once said, “Most people are just as happy as they make up their minds to be.” The saying proves true. Research shows that 40% of happiness is due to intentional activity. This means that you can plan your happiness by what you choose to do every day. That’s why today I’m sharing ideas on how to find your joy so you can live a happier life.

Understand the two types of joy. According to the American Psychological Association, there are two types of joy: Passive Joy, which involves tranquility and a feeling of contentment with things as they are. Active Joy, which involves a desire to share one’s feelings with others. Both forms of joy are associated with an increase in energy and feelings of confidence and selfesteem.
Find your spark. Different things bring joy to people, but the top things that people claim bring the most happiness are family and relationships, positive thinking, gratitude and the ability to forgive. Another study showed that socializing, exercise, and sex made people the happiest. Take a moment to consider where you can add more joy to your every day. Then choose two things to focus on starting TODAY.
Appreciate the little things. When it comes to experiencing more overall joy, frequency beats intensity. Meaning that lots of little good things are shown to make you happier than a handful of big things. Finding joy every single day adds up more than one big event like a vacation or wedding. That’s very encouraging! You can become more joyful when
you appreciate the little things like an intricate smell, and sound of your flower, petting a puppy, observing the sunrise, meal is a ritual that includes smelling the fresh coffee, or feeling the savoring. endorphin boost after a workout.
Pencil in recurring happiness. If joy and happiness is the most important thing, we cannot fail to consistently include it in our calendar. Stanford professor Jennifer Aaker says, “it’s really that simple: the things that make you happy, do them more often.”
Practice savoring. Finding joy more frequently includes employing a technique called savoring. It means appreciating the good moments. It’s what separates the happiest people from the average joe. Harvard professor Francesca Gino says, “including savoring in your daily rituals is powerful.” Having a morning coffee is an example of a ritual. Praying before a meal and paying attention to each sight,
Be intentional.
Joy is largely intentional. “If you want joy you must jump for it”, these are the lyrics to a children’s song that really do ring true! You play a huge role in how much joy is in your life. Start to savor everything more, be grateful, enjoy people, exercise (just do it!), and forgive quickly. x Jody Trierweiler, C.N.C is a Career Mastered Magazine Contributor, and health and fitness expert in Metro Detroit. Just as when seasons change, after a harvest, leaves fall down and whatever remains grows cold or withers away in order to make room for life’s new round of seeds to be planted, watered and sprout. The same can be likened to what takes place in our inner beings. In time, we are challenged to change, adopt different mindsets, build new foundations, and grow into a better, higher version of ourselves year over year. As I write this, it also happens to be my birthday —a time that much like Spring also calls for a period of reflection, cleansing of the old, and a fresh take at something new. So dear woman leader, if you’re ready for a new beginning and desiring to sprout a happier, more colorful, resilient version of yourself, here is my letter to you with steps to do just that. Because no matter where you are in life, no matter how difficult the circumstances are surrounding you, you can be like the rose that grew from the concrete; and now is your (our) time to bloom!
CHECK YOUR FOUNDATION In gardening, seeds have to be planted in fertile soil, and the conditions of the environment need to align towards growth as well. If you are in environments that aren’t edifying, you risk crippling your own growth or producing “bad” fruit.

Resilient leaders embody a certain level of poise, optimism, focus, and adaptability through uncertain times. They have the persistence to continue to play full out regardless of what circumstances arise and inturn, they are able to meet altered demands and

Manage stress. Resilient leaders have the psychological wherewithal to cope with stress and hardship. After they are done taking care of business, they don’t neglect looking after their own mental and physical well-being so they can feel relaxed and replenished. Resilient leaders often incorporate daily practices to reduce their stress levels. Some extracurricular activities they may take up might include regular exercise at a gym or mindfulness meditation. They may also block off time for self care like making regular appointments to receive spa services. In other words, they practice self love and are intentional about loving the life they currently live, not the one they intend to live. A mantra worth repeating to manage stress is, “I am calm and at ease.”
They embody an indomitable spirit, which is a quality of not giving up and never wanting to give up. During challenging times, resilient leaders often dig deep to find the strength needed to overcome obstacles, and they don’t let go until the job is done. A mantra resilient leaders may tell themselves is “I can do hard things.”
Becoming a resilient leader is achievable. Adopt the mindsets mentioned above and you can equip yourself with a superpower necessary to thrive when faced with times of uncertainty. x
Be adaptable. Change is inevitable, which is why resilient leaders have the ability to react quickly to change. They demonstrate flexibility and know when to course correct, modify plans, or pivot with the market entirely. Resilient leaders are prepared to be met with a moment of decision. If they make

So here’s a quick guide - informed by the experts - on how to navigate the unexpected.
How to Navigate The Unexpected

HANDLING
In many areas of life, the springtime has often brought about big changes and new initiatives. But adapting to change can be a challenge, especially if that change comes as a surprise. Whether you are experiencing a corporate structure reorganization or shifting policies from vendors, it is likely that this spring is bringing some unexpected element into your work life.
24 Career Mastered • SPRING 2024
HOW TO SURVIVE THE UNEXPECTED STOP THE BOAT First things first, in the acclaimed words of Douglas Adams, “Don’t panic”. When faced with the unexpected, it is natural to fall into a state of chaotic anxiety. But the most productive thing you can do when dealing with a big and unexpected situation is, as Harvard Business Review puts it, to “stop the boat.” You cannot adapt if you are still moving. So take a pause and evaluate the situation. FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE Psychology Today emphasizes that it is critical to remember that unexpected does not mean bad. In fact, even things you do not want or prefer are not necessarily bad or destructive in and of themselves. Psychology Today also points out that regardless of the shock factor, things are likely to work out okay in the end. So while you’ve taken a pause be sure to focus on the positive and, as Harvard Business Review recommends: evaluate only realistic options. Wishing that things could be different or bargaining with the situation do not actually help you find a new path forward, so skip those counterproductive steps and focus on realistic options instead. This could include concrete evaluation. Fast Company recommends checking how the news will impact workload and what tradeoffs need to be made in light of the unexpected event. This could also include introspective components, like how different reasonable options feel on a gut level. DECIDE ON A PLAN Once you have evaluated your options and settled on a path forward Harvard Business Review focuses on the
importance of making a decision and committing to it. You may not have the most ideal path forward, but a plan is better than no plan, and sticking to your choice is sure to help you navigate the uncharted waters ahead.
• Adapt to the new role or find a different job.
TO CLOSE WITH AN EXAMPLE:
• Then once you have made your choice, move forward boldly, knowing that everyone goes through hard things, and that you have the power to navigate through the unexpected as long as you stop, think, then act. x
Imagine a corporate reorganization has given you a new focus market that will change your work hours and force you to work outside your comfort zone - perhaps even working with a client in a different country and culture. Rather than jumping in without considering the implications of the change or using up valuable time simply being upset, fix your attention on the options truly available to you:
• Look at the consequences and nuances of those options. Maybe your finances cannot handle a change in job right now or, alternatively, maybe your family life is not amicable to the new schedule.

HOW TO
PRUNE
YOUR PROFESSIONAL LIFE TO ENCOURAGE GROWTH
G
BY: Nicole Hudsom CAREERS
rowing a thriving career is a lot like growing a garden. In the beginning, you start with seeds and care for them as they mature into hearty plants. But you can’t stop there. A gardener’s work is never done. To keep a plant
looking and producing its best, you have to tend to it even after it has bloomed and matured. Pruning plants, or cutting away the dead branches, encourages healthy growth, and your professional life is no different.
Here are three easy steps you can take to prune your professional life in order to support new growth:
Career Mastered • SPRING 2024
28
START WITH A VISION IN MIND When it comes to your career, ask yourself where you want to go. What do you want for yourself in the future? If you own or run a business, what do you want for your business and your team? How far do you want to go? Every path has a destination at the end, so before you make any changes, big or small, it’s important to have a vision in mind. That way, you know where you’re starting from and where you want to end up. BRAINSTORM: WHAT WILL HELP YOU REACH YOUR GOAL? After you’ve figured out where you want to go, you have to determine the best way to get there. Grab a pen and paper and write down what is currently going well in your professional life. Which processes are working and which could use some improvement? Maybe there is a practice that is outdated, redundant, or no longer working that you need to rethink. If you’re in a management position, this would be a good time to reach out to your team. Ask them for their honest feedback on your current processes and what they think could use some tweaking. We asked Hudson Collective’s own Christine LaSalle, Director
of Operations, how she approaches pruning with her team. She said, “At the start of the year, I meet with my team and talk about what went well last year and our goals for the upcoming year. I ask them for their honest feedback on our processes, even if that feedback is blunt! But the key is to actually make the changes together rather than just point out what isn’t working.” Don’t be afraid to cut out the dead and dysfunctional branches. Once you identify a practice that is no longer working, or is no longer necessary, don’t be afraid to sharpen the shears and let it go. Just because you’ve done something one way for a long period of time doesn’t mean you have to continue. In order to reach your future goals, you can’t have deadweight hindering
your growth, so cut out any outdated processes that no longer serve you. Once you eliminate the deadweight, it leaves room for better, more productive practices to develop. If you’re in a management position, listen to your team and do your best to cut away any frustrations that keep them from performing at their best. If there’s a part of their day to day that is more trouble than it’s worth, make the change and let it go, or get creative and find a way to make the task more productive. Done correctly, pruning your professional life can lead to exciting new growth. And the best part is: the changes don’t have to be big. Like in gardening, cutting out one small area at a time can make a big difference. Pruning is a small and mindful act and the more care you put into your career, the longer it will serve you. x Nicole Hudson is the Founder of Hudson Collective, an integrated digital strategy and communications firm creating social impact by activating their communities through branding, storytelling, and expanding their engagement with a robust online presence. A Fresh START! Seeing the Opportunity
W
within a Crisis
hen a crisis occurs, it can seem normal to shut down and throw in the towel until things blow over. Take the pandemic and economic uncertainty for example. It’s an easy excuse to turn away from starting a new business and turn instead to what’s familiar – even if that thing is no longer working for you in this new season of life. Committing to a fresh start is worth the time when you have a mindset beyond just surviving and you are
intentional about seeing the opportunities that still lay ahead in order to truly thrive and live life on purpose. But being able to spot the opportunity within a crisis can be a challenge if you’re not focused on the possibilities. Use these tips to find opportunity in the eye of a crisis so you can gain a fresh start and emerge on the other side with strength and resilience. Acknowledge your track record for overcoming adversity When faced with a crisis, don’t bury your head in the sand.
BY: Kayvonna K. Stigall CAREERS
54 Career Mastered • SPRING 2024
Acknowledging the crisis isn’t giving power to it. Often a crisis teaches us things about ourselves as well as the world around us. When faced with a moment of crisis, gather strength from it by exploring the lessons in it and looking at your track record for overcoming adversity. Being able to have conversations with ourselves about how we overcame adversity in the past can allow us to gain understanding and process what is happening in a healthy way. Taking a moment to acknowledge the strength we already have in us can in turn create an atmosphere for new opportunities to flourish.
CREATE A PLAN
Create a plan to deal with the crisis. Write out what worked, what didn’t, and even the emotional aspects of
the crisis in order to gain knowledge for present and future growth. Taking a look at what has occurred will aid in making short and long term goals. When planning, be sure to also prioritize and organize thoughts and actions. Sometimes how things were said or done can affect the overall outcome of a situation. Planning with purpose can help make your fresh start a successful one.
BE SUPPORTED
Receiving support from others can play an important role in embracing new beginnings in a crisis. Often we have better outcomes when we have others to collaborate with. Another set of eyes to see what we may not be able to and to keep us encouraged. Author and writer Brene Brown says, “We don’t have to do all of it alone. We were never
meant to”. Collaboration can be an essential part in a fresh start. No matter what the beginning of your fresh start looks like, the most important takeaway is that you did not give up. Once you acknowledge that as part of your ongoing process and decide to keep going, it can become a reminder on the journey to embrace and take full advantage of those opportunities now! not.” x

TIPS FOR A
MORE
COLORFUL F
WORKLIFE
or many of us, work life can grow dull. A lack of extravagant or exciting events could cause us to question our life purpose and rethink career choices. While it sounds drastic, it can happen to us all, especially if we are not intentional about creating a work environment that’s inspirational and more of what we desire. The key to having a more colorful worklife is knowing what we can and cannot control and making the decision to still have a successful workday. Controlling the colorful aspects
BY: Asia Shamir Ferguson STYLE of your environment will lead you to increased satisfaction and fulfillment in the workplace. Enjoy these tips to add some life to your work. Take advantage of your wardrobe Look good. Feel good. Do Good. Never underestimate the power of an amazing outfit. You don’t have to look like you're walking the red carpet, but showing up in a killer outfit has proven to boost confidence and
Colors are proven to unconsciously affect mood and senses. Look around your work environment. If you don’t notice any dimension, texture, or color in your workplace, it's time to add some fun and intrigue to your environment. You should be excited to go to work every day, even if it's for the small things, like your favorite pink coffee mug, vase of flowers or comfy desk chair.

Add color… literally

performance. Even if you work from home, instead of logging on in your pajamas, elevate your workfrom-home wardrobe to quality loungewear. Even though you’re remote, showing up for yourself the same way you’d show up to an office not only boosts self-worth but also the excitement to get to work.
Consume motivational content Color not only comes visually, but also in the material we consume. It's important to feed your mind good things throughout the day to counter loss of energy. Taping motivational quotes to your desk and verbally affirming them makes life colorful in your mind. If you're not a word-of-affirmation kind of girl, try visual aids such as hanging your vision board or an inspiring photo in your office. Listening to informational or inspirational content can also add an unconscious spark to your drive. Creating an uplifting work environment not only comes from tangible actions but from within.
Don’t “work from home” at home If you’re a work-from-home queen, the same old routine can get boring very quickly. In the beginning, it may be a flex, but it can eventually get less exciting by the day. To keep the energy high and maintain a colorful worklife, try getting out of the house and working at your local coworking space, coffee shop or nearby park. Changing up your work environment can add a motivating and spontaneous aspect to your day that makes life colorful. It also allows you to connect and network with new people you may not have otherwise met. You never know who you could meet or what stories you’d get to hear by talking to new people, and that in and of itself could add a lot more color to your life! Making more intentional work-from-home decisions can add excitement while also keeping productivity in check. Color can be added to your life in ways that are not just seen, but felt. Incorporating uplifting and high-vibrational sensations into your work life, adopting a change of scenery, and surrounding yourself with pops of color can help promote positivity and keep you in a highly productive state to show up as your best self. x Asia Shamir Ferguson is a wardrobe stylist, content creator, and journalist based in Atlanta, GA. BUILDING YOUR TEAM'S
resilience
W BY: Lisa Nichols FEATURE
ith the rapid evolution of digitization, innovation and culture, the best thing leaders can do now for the future of work is to prepare their teams for the changes being revealed each day.
Whether you’re going through organizational change – such as layoffs, reorganizations, or exponential growth; or navigating shifts in society –
such as new technology, market fluctuations, or remote and hybrid work, leading teams through change requires resilience, adaptability, and intentional growth.
Considering the dynamic nature of recent workplace changes, along with layers of deadlines, quotas, and staffing needs, it’s easy to understand the rise in the number of leaders encountering high levels of stress and burnout.
Guiding your team through an unpredictable environment isn’t easy, but there are a few ways to strengthen your own resilience and set your team up to increase theirs —regardless of the obstacles that arise.
CULTIVATE TEAM COHESION Teams that have real relationships and work together as a cohesive whole experience greater productivity and morale as well as reduced burnout and turnover. This means that devoting time and energy to strengthening interpersonal connections equips employees with a support system for future changes. Building relational capacity among team members takes intentionality, and even more so in remote or hybrid environments.
PRIORITIZE COMMUNICATION AND TRANSPARENCY One of the challenges in change management is that leaders are often limited in the amount of information they are allowed to disclose. This restriction can cause a breakdown in communication between leadership
Your team will be confronted with some difficult circumstances that are outside of your control, but no matter what type of change you and your team face this year, you can equip them for resilience and growth. Acknowledging your own experience, welcoming their questions, increasing human connection, and prioritizing transparency are a few of the ways to communicate that you value them and care about their wellbeing. While you may not be able to predict exactly what the future of work holds, strengthening your resilience, adaptability, and compassion will prepare you to lead your team into whatever new challenges arise. WELCOME CURIOSITY AND QUESTIONS It’s human to resist change on some level because our brains are wired to prefer what we already have a framework to understand. Transitions bring us into unknown circumstances, and it’s natural to want to avoid the discomfort of something new. Sticking with the familiar is much more comfortable. Acknowledging this reality and encouraging curiosity, rather than judging perceived responses, communicates to employees that they are safe to ask questions and express how the change is affecting them. While you may not be able to answer all their concerns, the more team members engage in the process, the more they will feel supported and valued.
and employees. The more information that you are able to provide your team members, the better they will be equipped to make the transition. Being transparent about what you’re not able to divulge builds trust with your employees because it reassures them that you will be as open as you can be. When they know you are doing what you can to support them, it helps to reduce some of the anxiety they may be experiencing.
59
IDENTIFY YOUR OWN EMOTIONS The first step in supporting yourself and others during transition is to acknowledge how the circumstances are impacting you. Your emotions in this season of change may range from anxious and overwhelmed to energized and enthusiastic. Recognizing what you’re feeling at any given point in the process, as well as what is causing these responses can help to reduce your stress level and increase your empathy toward those around you. Self-compassion and selfcare are essential for preparing you to lead your team through a challenging time.
This might look like pairing up employees and sending them to breakout rooms during the second half of team meetings, inviting one person to share something personal at the beginning of each all-team session, or having everyone share their answer to a thought-provoking question. The key to each of these ideas is incorporating them as part of an existing meeting, rather than adding them on as an extra task. Making relational connection part of the workday reflects the value you place on it as a leader.

SPRING CLEANING Tips for the Workplace
BY: Asia Shamir Ferguson WORKPLACE
S
pring symbolizes renewal and refreshment, which makes it the perfect season to embrace new beginnings and say goodbye to the dust and clutter inhibiting an uplifting working environment.
Whether you work from home or in an office, use these spring cleaning to have a productive workplace this season.
INVEST IN NEW ORGANIZATION SYSTEMS Although change may be scary, springtime brings about change for the better. A key to working effectively at home or in-office is having a system for everything. If your workday is getting interrupted by hours of distractions, it may be time to rethink your organization method. Invest in new binders, desktop file organizers, and office storage containers so you can work smarter, not harder. New organization systems at the home office could also look

like a brand-new filing cabinet, shelves, or organizers to get you into the spring-cleaning spirit. CREATE A CLUTTER-FREE WORKSPACE Perhaps the hardest part of the season is parting ways with paperwork, notes, and files you no longer need. But we can’t keep prolonging the inevitable. Here’s your nudge to declutter. If you work from home, you may not view your workspace as a workplace entirely because it’s attached to the comfort of your own home. This makes it easy for the smallest things to create a huge pile of archives in our work area. The only solution is to part ways with documents you no longer need so you can create a clean clutter-free workspace. If you’re afraid of tossing something that could be of good use, consider donating anything that could still serve a purpose to others. DO A DIGITAL DECLUTTER It wouldn’t be a true modern spring cleaning session without also considering a digital declutter. So many of us also carry an unorganized and cluttered workplace with us on our laptops. Since this task may be more time-consuming, you’ll want to take a day to sit and delete and organize photos, files, and documents that are taking up storage space to make new room on your devices for new projects. If it’s taking too long to locate certain digital assets, revamping your folders can improve your work-life productivity.
DON’T FORGET THE SURFACE! While the idea of clearing our entire work area could be a dreadful thought, we must consider the fact that many of us spend just as much time in the office as we do in our homes. Without relying on janitorial services, when was the last time you personally wiped your surfaces clean? Just like we clean our bedrooms and kitchens to prevent bacteria buildup, this spring let’s also take extra precaution to clean our workspace so we can have a fresh start. Disinfecting small things such as your computer, stapler, desk surface, and printer can go a long way in creating a healthy working environment, especially with the return of pollen and allergies. The more you can do to prevent sickness, the better! Take these spring cleaning tips with you to the office and prepare to witness a new and refreshing workspace! To conquer this season, don’t be afraid to let go and upgrade so you can thrive at your workspace whether at home or in the office.x

BEST PRACTICES TO
SPRINGBOARD YOUR SUCCESS
I
magine during your next performance review, receiving a rating of being “resilient” and “exceeding expectations”. That was me many years ago, which left me feeling somewhat perplexed about the true meaning of resilience.
Since then, I’ve gained clarity. I’ve learned that resilience is the capacity to endure and navigate through difficult situations. BY: Haseena Shaheed-Jackson SUCCESS
Here are some best practices I’ve learned throughout my career to adopt the resilience necessary to springboard into success. DEVELOP A SENSE OF PURPOSE A key ingredient to springboard your success is by developing a sense of purpose. Having clear goals and values provides a framework for navigating challenges. Purpose is fuel to resilience. Having purpose is like armor providing protection to press forward. And with that protection, you can be focused to not turn back or give up
because you know who you are and where you are going.

Bounce forward Achieving greater outcomes and soaring to next levels, requires resilience. Resilience is not bouncing back, but bouncing forward. It’s not about striving to bounce back. It’s about striving to progress. In order to springboard your success, you must progress from challenges, adversity and setbacks. Apply the knowledge learned to evolve to higher levels in your life. LEARN FROM HARDSHIP Learning from situations can result in growth and transformation. Growing builds character and shifts mindset. Resilience enables maintaining a positive and adaptive response when in the eye of the storm. When you want to springboard your success, you learn to face stressors head on, manage hardships and accept the unexpected twists of life. HAVE GRIT General Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight. It is the size of the fight in the dog.” You are greater on the inside than you are on the outside. Resilience is empowering. Push through and endure the challenges to move forward with a newfound strength and determination. SELF-REFLECT Resilience builds up self-efficacy and requires self-reflection. When you want to springboard your success, you learn to overcome challenges and take on difficult tasks with determination. Taking time to reflect during the experiences promotes learning
and increasing selfawareness. This allows for the application of the experience in one’s life resulting in personal growth. EMPOWER YOURSELF You are equipped and empowered with all that you need to keep moving forward and undertake the journey that is for you. I challenge you with this exercise. Go to the mirror, gaze into it, look at you, and peer beyond the surface to recognize the inherent strength and power within you. You embody resilience, having tenacity and undeniable strength.
Affirm that you are capable of withstanding and triumphing over life's challenges. We are all in a constant state of evolution. Allow yourself to develop into the empowered and formidable individual you are destined to become in order to launch yourself into even more success this year. Remember, resilience is you. You are Her. “Believe in yourself. You are braver than you think, more talented than you know, and capable of more than you imagine.” – Roy T. Bennett x

USING YOUR
SEAT
AT THE TABLE FOR
GOOD W
e’ve all heard the phrase before – Don’t wait for a seat at the table, build your own table. But what does it really mean today to be provided with a seat at the table? For some, it’s simply a matter of having a decision-maker that looks like you. For others, it’s more about having someone who thinks like you or comes from your same community. All and all, there seems to be one common denominator: it represents an opportunity to be heard and to make a difference.
BY: Jasmine Ball LEADERSHIP
But whether we’re talking about occupying space at the executive level in your workplace, holding a political office, or representatives at organizations and brands you know, love, and use, having a seat at the table is a hard-earned symbol of success (and responsibility) in any company. That’s why it’s all the more important that if you’ve claimed a seat, you’re using your seat at the table for good.
68 Career Mastered • SPRING 2024
There are a number of ways to be an advocate for the greater good without having to flip the entire table. Here are a few of those ways. BE YOUR SISTER’S KEEPER Did you know? Despite women making significant progress in obtaining senior management roles globally more than ever before (up to about 32% in 2022—the highest number ever recorded), women are still underrepresented in leadership positions. But having more women in leadership isn’t just good for women, it’s also good for business. Studies show that “companies with more women on their boards outperform those without by a significant margin, and organizations with greater gender diversity among senior leaders are more profitable,” according to a diversity and inclusion report by McKinsey & Company. For this reason, it’s doubly important to be your sister’s keeper and help others capture their opportunities. When you have the choice, open doors for more women leaders to occupy seats at tables where they deserve to be. LIFT EVERY VOICE, INCLUDING YOUR OWN It’s not just enough to have a seat at the table. Once you’ve claimed your seat, have enough
confidence to use your voice. You deserve to be in the room just as much as the next person. Don’t settle with being the quiet one or always resorting to “take things off line” to have side discussions when you don’t want to ruffle any feathers. Participate! Use your voice to speak up in the moment when it matters—even when you are the dissenting voice. Also, create opportunities to open the floor for every voice to be heard (not just the louder voices in the room). Not saying anything isn’t helpful to you, the organization, or the people you represent. If you are not sharing your expertise, asking the tough questions, or pushing people to think differently, then you aren’t doing your job or maximizing your privilege of having a seat. Remember, it’s bigger than you If you have a seat at the table, especially if you are in the minority, it’s likely due to someone else coming before you to directly or indirectly advocate for your place. Remember you having a place “at the top” is always bigger than you. Never
forget those who believed in you, championed for you, or supported you in earning your seat at the table or place at the top. You can honor them by your resilience to be a positive influence, going to bat for others, and advocating for the greater good. It’s also a good thing to hold yourself accountable and fight to do the right thing for the right reasons. That is how you use your seat at the table for good. Because the reality is: real people who don’t have tables at all are often the ones who end up paying the consequences for the actions and ideas of those who have seats. x Jasmine Ball is a wife, mom, award-winning journalist, and founder of BTM Writing Services –a writing firm based out of TN designed to help companies all over the world get confidence over their content and grow their businesses. LESSONS for Building Long Term Stability and Resiliency
W
hen a leader is stable, they create an environment in which employees, collaborators, and the organization as a whole thrive because of their sense of consistency, dependability, and steadiness in guiding and managing their team or company. Resiliency in leadership however speaks to the ability to adapt, recover, and succeed in the face of challenges, setbacks, and adversity. Embodying both qualities is critical.
BY: Dr. Sabrina Jackson FEATURE As we look through history, we have tremendous examples of women in leadership who are models of stability and resiliency that others may follow. These and so many other powerpacking female leaders have lived leadership and left lessons we can follow. Today, I’m sharing a few of those lessons with the hopes that by implementing them we too can become “her” and build both long term stability and resiliency in our own corners of the world.
SELF-ASSUREDNESS
It is so important to know yourself and not try to be a copycat. I’m talking about authenticity. Understand that you are one of one and uniquely crafted to do what you do like no other. Take the time to constantly rediscover who you are now while also embracing who you are evolving into on a day to day as life continues to change us towards growth.
COACHABILITY
The number one reason people fail at anything is “coachability”. How can anyone get better if they can not
FOR A COMEBACK
Never believe that a fall can keep you down. Everyday that you wake up and can get up is a new opportunity to succeed. There is an amazing woman in Highland Park, Michigan named Mama Shu who has lost three children. She did not stay stuck in her grief. She decided to honor their lives by creating Avalon Village. She has acquired over 40 parcels of land, created the Homework House for youth, and was one of CNN’s Top 10 Heroes in 2023. Wow, what a model of resiliency!
SET BOUNDARIES
Establish clear boundaries to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Boundaries help to prevent burnout and allow you to sustain your leadership role over the long term. This also prevents you from constantly pouring into others without taking time to
pour back into yourself, rest and recharge.
SELF-CARE
This lesson may be the most important as you must take time for yourself. Self-care is more than just getting a massage, mani/pedi, or a facial. Self-care involves saying positive things to yourself about yourself, having the courage to stand up for yourself, and letting go of things you can’t control. As a leader looking to have longevity, seek to implement each of these lessons which take you from simply surviving in your role, to thriving as a resilient leader. x Dr. Sabrina Jackson, Career Mastered Contributor, is known as the People Expert, helping people with people —even if that person is themselves. 3. Shelf life – Pay attention to the expiration of your products. Natural ingredients may not last as long as other products with additives used to prolong shelf life. With this in careful consideration, botanical skincare products also have wonderful benefits as well: 1. Usually, the packaging and formula is environmentally friendly. 2. The ingredients are safe and gentle on the skin. Enhance your Natural Beauty This Spring the natural “nomakeup look” is still as popular as ever. Beauty brands lead us into an era where “less is really more”. We continue to experiment with colors that complement our skin tone – browns, pinks, corals. While other beauty brands offer products with better moisturizing properties for a natural glow. For a natural Spring-like look, try the following tips: 1. Prep your skin with a plant-based primer that has ingredients that soften the skin and prepares the face for the application of other makeup products.
4. Use your fingers to apply concealer, blush, and eyeshadow as a wash of color that will compliment your skin tone perfectly. The heat in your fingertips will help to distribute the product more naturally. Opt for cleaner ingredients Botanical based skin care offers formula options that are also cruelty-free and easily identifiable on the label. These products are sought after because they are perceived to be good for your skin and more sustainable, as an alternative to synthetically produced products. A few things to consider when selecting botanical based skin care are:
2. Always prep with a layer of sunscreen.
1. Fragrance – Many people are very sensitive to fragrance. However, many of your botanical skincare will be fragrance free.
3. Use concealer only where needed – and as your foundation – This allows your natural beauty to show through with minimal coverage keeping your pores free of too much product.
2. Cost – Natural (plant based) products can be more expensive based on the way that the ingredients might have had to be grown / harvested.
3. Anti-aging properties – Rosehip Oil, Coconut oil, Vitamin C, Ginger, Avocado 4. Antioxidant rich properties – Green Tea, Propolis (bee glue), Vitamin E 5. Anti-inflammatory properties – Honey, Turmeric, Licorice root, Oatmeal 6. Promote natural hydration – Jojoba Oil, Shea butter, tea tree oil, Aloe vera, Hyaluronic Acid. Be sure to research ingredients carefully before incorporating them into your skincare routine. And consult your dermatologist and allergist to ensure that you do not have any sensitivity or allergy to certain ingredients. Unhappy workers are disengaged and less productive; and that’s not just an HR issue, it’s a global one. According to reports done by The U.S. Department of Labor “employees who are
not engaged cost the world $7.8 trillion in lost productivity, equal to 11% of global GDP.” And the primary cause of work toxicity is right in our fingertips. It’s the consequence of poor leadership. “I AM HER” A WOMAN OF IMPACT AND RESILIENCE “I am her”. When I hear these three words, it reminds me of all the sacrifices of my ancestors and other women before me regardless of their culture, religion, and background who fought to be seen and heard. Who created long lasting change. Those who live to be exceptional in all fields. Those who created a legacy. Those who showed us the power within us. They passed down the torch generation after generation so a simple girl like me from a village could dream of the possibilities despite the hardships. “I am her” - strength I am Her because everything that was meant to destroy me made me stronger. I am Her voice because she has yet to find hers. I am Her strength because she is too broken to find hers. I am Her fight because she is at war within.
I am also Her who sacrificed all her dreams and goals in protecting me. I am also Her who was stripped of her dignity to be made an example of. I am also Her who never lived to see the change her sacrifices, her fight, and determination has brought. I am Her who lived before me, I am also Her who lives after me. I AM HER. “I am her” - reflection
I am Her light because she has yet to recognize the light within her. I am Her reflection because she is today, where I was yesterday. I am Her mirror because one day she will be HER.
At first, I thought I'd write an empowering story of a little girl who dreamt to grace the covers of the magazine, who instead, life took her through challenges that could have perished her and yet she rose up and dedicated her life to
helping and empowering others like her. But there are so many of these stories that we have heard, seen, been inspired by, and celebrated. Today I want HER, the woman reading this, to look in the mirror and recognize herself in others. Do you fully see her? Do you fully embrace her with all the wounds, imperfections, failures, and wins? Do you see that she is more than enough? Do you celebrate her for all she has overcome and continues to do everyday? Take a moment and tell her thank you for the value and change she has brought into the lives of others and into this world no matter how small because you are her and she is you. x

Top Colors: Cobalt/ Sky Blue and White Winter can be gloomy and harsh, making Spring the perfect time to romanticize your growth and how you’ve evolved. One of the best ways to channel new beginnings in your style is through color. Blue represents resilience, peace, serenity, and spirituality. White is associated with purity and freshness also a sense of simplicity and cleanliness. Incorporate these trendy colors into your looks with a white slip-dress or all-blue set this spring.
probably notice designers doubling down, going beyond the go-to silver metallic to now gold and even pink. Incorporating metallics for many of us may seem like a stretch, however, the key is to incorporate experiential pieces. Consider a gold or silver metallic dress on your nights out, metallic pants for work or even a metallic handbag.

90’s Nostalgia and the Resurgence of Polos Paying homage to the 90’s, this Spring you’ll notice a return of the traditional polo. Incorporate this piece to look effortlessly respectable and polished. Regardless of if you're a Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X, or Boomer, we can all find a love for simplicity and class. Motivated by last year’s trend of quiet luxury, and also considering the current political and economic state of the world, Spring 2024 is all about prioritizing elevated essentials rather than bold logos. The obsession with the 90s comes from the admiration of simplicity and an effortless look. If you also have the same admiration, invest in or incorporate pieces like button-ups, high-rise jeans or trousers, blazers, and lightweight jackets.

Fringe & Flare
The “Renaissance” continues… Get ready to shine and shimmer through the spring! From dresses to shoes to accessories, metallics have entered the chat and have been pinned to the top. Thanks to the Queen Bee, Beyonce’, the trend is now a spring-summer staple. As you shop for new items, you’ll
Spring is the season women have the most fun, and the best way to show it is with risk-taking outfits. And no, I don’t mean baring it all, but rather embracing the risk-taking trend of flowy and funky fringe. The sun is out, and the weather is warm, which creates a powerful impulse in women to go big and bold. Fringe adds a funky element to your look without burning you up. Look for fringe in tops, skirts, and even handbags to add eye-catching texture and dimension to your spring looks.

Roses We all know there’s nothing groundbreaking about florals in the springtime. However, this season yearns for intentionality with a fascination for roses. Roses indicate love, romance, and friendship. Playing off of last year’s trend of “romanticizing your life”, connecting to the florals and plants around you can help immerse you into the spirit of spring. We’re not just talking about a rose print on a dress. This includes embellishments, patchwork, and even accessories. Although it seems like old news, designers decided to take a new route this season to highlight this flower of love. Warm weather is around the corner. And so is the new you! The key to resilience is to give yourself the freedom and excitement to experiment. From bright and shiny color hues to the return of timeless staples, the fashion in Spring 2024 offers a bold, romantic, and classic take on how to embody strength and elegance through personal style. Take these trends into the spring with you with an open mind and the intention to slay! x

tay in control of where you’re going and make the most of your time. It’s important to make plans, follow through on each action item and stay on the right track no matter how long it takes to reach your goal.
Once there was a traveler anxious to reach her goal. After driving along the highway a while, she stopped her car and asked a passerby how far it was to her destination. The passerby considered the questions, then said, “Well, if you keep going the way you’re headed, it’s about 2,500 miles. But if you turn around and head back the way you came, it will be about three miles.”

Discipline yourself to stay on track. Don’t waste time on things that have nothing to do with your personal or professional goals. Stay on track.
FIVE TIPS FOR STAYING ON TRACK 1. Keep the visual image of your goal at the front of your mind. Schedule time for building the skills you need to accomplish your goal and honor the time commitment you’ve made with yourself. 2. Create small-step goals that lead up to your main goal and concentrate on the small “right now” goal. See yourself as having accomplished it, and one step closer to your main goal. 3. See setbacks as opportunities for growth. Analyze your experiences, adjust your behaviors, thoughts, and visualizations that bring your goal into sharper focus. 4. Share your goal and your process with several people you trust who will give you positive support. Ask them to hold you accountable for doing what you say you will do and to assist you in whatever way they can. 5. Celebrate every success. Be proud of what you accomplish, and log your accomplishments in a journal, no matter how small they are. For some, getting through one day without saying, “I can’t…” is a major accomplishment.
