For 90 years Carey has served the church in New Zealand by producing leaders for ministry and mission. I want to invite you to come and be part of all that God is doing in and through us.

A

t Carey you will be engaged in theological study with teachers known for their scholarship and personal commitment to ministry and mission service. We greatly value our relational style of learning. Our student community is energetic and made up of people from many diverse backgrounds and experiences. Students range in age from 18 to 74 and include recent school-leavers, people wanting to change their careers, those just starting to discover God’s calling on their lives and experienced leaders wanting to enhance their ministry. It is exciting to watch our graduates effectually join with God in his mission, not only within New Zealand, but all over the world. They serve in local churches as pastors, community workers, children and family ministers, mission co-ordinators, youth leaders and church planters. Others serve in ministries such as chaplaincy, advocacy, non-profit organisations and academic positions. Many of our graduates continue within the marketplace.

rom orientation through to graduation we want you to think of this place as your place and the Carey Community as your family. Our campus is full of genuine care and community. This happens through a number of special events each year such as bagel breakfasts, Community Life Days and sENDing, (which is when we celebrate the completion of our Pastoral Leadership students’ training) as well as through our weekly chapel, community lunches and prayer times that aim to make our campus an awesome place to belong. Not only will you study, discover and unpack knowledge at Carey, you will also form friendships that last as you journey with other students and staff who are committed to supporting you, both while you study and beyond.

COMMUNITY WORSHIP Every Tuesday we gather together as a Carey Community to worship in the Chapel. It is a special time of worship, reflection and anointed preaching from a Carey staff member or special guest. MONDAY AND TUESDAY LUNCHES Gathering together around food is a large part of creating Community at Carey. Every Monday and Tuesday during semester time Carey provides lunch at no cost for students. We also love to welcome the spouses of Carey students to join us for lunch. LUNCHTIME INTERVIEWS WITH GUEST SPEAKERS On a regular basis our Principal, Charles Hewlett interviews guest speakers. This is a perfect opportunity to listen and interact with effective pastors, mission and marketplace leaders as they tell their personal stories in leadership and mission with transparency.

AFTER LUNCH ACTION After lunch is the perfect opportunity to break out the Volleyball, Basketball, Table Tennis, Foosball or Darts. Students are encouraged to take part in a sports ladder as it’s a lot of fun and a great way to get to know others. WEDNESDAY PRAYERS Students and Carey staff come together in the Chapel every Wednesday to pray for the Carey community, the wider community, our country and our world. FORMATION GROUP Through the Formation Group Carey creates a space each week away from study where we can discern where God might be interacting with us and to be open to anything He might want to show us. Doing this together as a group enables us to encourage and support one another as part of our Carey Community.

Studying at Carey C

arey Baptist College offers a range of course delivery options with the aim of making study as accessible as possible to you. Currently we have: ONSITE CLASSES Most courses are offered at our campus in Penrose (Auckland), timetabled in weekly 3-hour classes over 12 weeks of the 17-week semester. A number of these courses are offered in the evening making them available for students in full-time employment. DISTANCE COURSES Many courses that Carey offers are available by distance learning, meaning that you can be located anywhere around New Zealand—or the world—but still continue to study through Carey.

BLOCK COURSES

PART-TIME STUDY

A number of block or intensive courses are offered each year. These are held either at the Auckland campus or at various locations throughout New Zealand. They usually last either five days or have two blocks of two or three days.

You can also study part-time towards any Carey qualification. Part-time study allows you to combine study with other commitments such as employment, family and church life. As a part-time student you can combine on-site classes, distance and block courses for a study programme that suits your needs.

FIELD EDUCATION Some courses are practical-based field education courses. You complete the requirements for these courses in your local place of ministry under the guidance of a nominated supervisor. FULL-TIME STUDY You can study full-time towards any Carey qualification. Full-time study allows you to combine on-site classes, distance and block courses into a study programme that suits your needs.

Applied Theology A

t Carey it is our strong conviction that a rigorous theological education will produce leaders with depth and endurance. Studying theology will help you know God in a deeper and more personal way so that trust and obedience will become much easier. Imagine being equipped with a thorough theological framework ready to be used by God to make a difference, wherever that may be.

Carey offers a range of NZQA approved qualifications at undergraduate level, as well as a range of training options which sit alongside academic study for those called to train and equip themselves in leadership for mission or ministry.

Certificate of Christian Studies (Not NZQA Accredited) Carey’s Certificate of Christian Studies provides a programme for people desiring an initial theological qualification, those pursuing study for personal interest or those working with an eye to further study. The programme is ideal for developing selfawareness of their spiritual journey and practical skills for ministry. Students can complete one or more courses chosen from those on offer during each year (subject to any pre-requisite requirements). A Carey Certificate will be awarded on completion of four courses OR credits gained may be applied within another Carey qualification.

Diploma of Applied Theology The Diploma of Applied Theology trains people to take part in, understand and apply a wide range of ministries. A student enrolled in the Diploma of Applied Theology will follow a programme of study equivalent to two full-time years and gain 240 credits (of which 90 credits must be completed at level 6 or above) comprising: At least 90 credits from courses in Bible & Theology, with a minimum of 15 credits at level 6 or above, including: MB521 Thinking Theologically

Certificate in Applied Theology The Certificate in Applied Theology introduces biblical and theological study through an ‘applied’ lens. It is ideal for those studying for personal interest or for those studying part-time who want a qualification that can be upgraded in the future. A student enrolled in the Certificate in Applied Theology will follow a programme of study equivalent to one year full-time and gain 120 credits comprising: MB521 Thinking Theologically OR MB421 Christian Worldview and Discipleship

There are growing numbers of Carey-based masters and doctoral students supervised by staff actively engaged in researching. This means a thriving research environment as Carey equips people for the task of ministry and mission in our world and furthers its commitment to academic excellence and discipleship.

Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Applied Theology Carey’s Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Theology and Master of Applied Theology provide advanced theological qualifications for practitioners committed to career-long education. The programmes aim to support professional development for pastors and other Christian ministry practitioners who have high levels of curriculum knowledge, research skills and leadership capacity. In addition the programmes aim to equip students interested in advancing academic scholarship and research in the field of applied theology.

Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy Carey has a Memorandum of Agreement with AUT University which allows Carey to assist students in the advanced research degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Both of these degrees are administered by the Doctoral Studies Board of AUT and potential candidates should consult with the Head of Carey Graduate School, as well as reading the relevant publications of AUT.

Training Pastoral Leaders for Life

A

t Carey our commitment is to provide the highest quality Pastoral Leadership training programmes. Our goal is the development of leaders who have a robust Biblical theology, a foundation of core Pastoral skills, a deep awareness of their own identity as rooted in Christ and a heart that is alive with passionate Kingdom purposes. If you are serious about God’s call into ministry be prepared to be challenged, transformed and equipped.

PASTORAL LEADERSHIP | Full-time 3 Years This specialised programme is strategically designed to prepare effective Pastoral Leaders. The training involves intentional development of the student’s Biblical knowledge, spiritual life, self-awareness, leadership skills and preaching. Experienced practitioners work alongside students, mentoring and supervising them through a

personalised development track. Local churches work alongside Carey and offer annual and summer placements as “hands on” experience to build ministry skills and confidence. All of the learning is constantly enhanced by peer group experiences where students support and encourage each other as they grow together as Pastoral Leaders.

Mission Track T

he Carey Mission Track aims to equip followers of Jesus to participate in God’s mission, whether that will be overseas or nearer to home. It involves more than gaining information. Together with a mission-oriented peer group we cultivate a missional spirituality, develop intercultural skills, build our global awareness and connect a range of mission practitioners and leaders. ACADEMIC Mission Track doesn’t stand alone, but runs alongside study in Applied Theology (part-time or full-time). As well as their qualification in Applied Theology students who complete Mission Track are awarded a Certificate (one year) or Diploma (two years) of Intercultural Practice.

Living, Learning, Going where you haven’t been before

I

ntermission is a one year full-time programme providing rigorous personal, academic and social exploration. It is designed with recent school leavers in mind who are keen on being stretched and challenged in their faith, worldview and life direction. It provides a well-rounded supportive environment for students to learn a number of transferrable skills that will set them up well for future engagement in academic, workplace and community-based institutions. The programme focuses on three different components— discipleship, vocation and study. Students learn to pray more deeply for the world around them, gain insight into ministry opportunities through community placements and are challenged by both local and national field trips. Intermission provides an excellent foundation for future academic study. Successful completion of the academic components in Intermission will lead to a Carey Certificate which is NZQA Accredited and recognised by other tertiary institutions.

Students also get an introduction to tertiary level tools of learning and develop skills in research, critical thinking, writing and presentations as well as engagement with academic scholars. The programme also includes and teaches students: •• Supportive pathways to independence including one-on-one mentoring

Internships CAREY INTERNSHIPS | Full-time 3 Years and Part-time options available Carey’s Internship programme is aimed at training reflective practitioners for Christian ministry in a local church, mission or vocational setting. The training programme is designed for students who have a training partnership with a church or Christian ministry organisation. It seeks to develop their skills and wisdom in self-reflection, contextual reflection and integration of theology and praxis so that they develop as faithful, creative and courageous servants of the gospel in their various ministry settings.

Carey internships provide: •• Intentional ministry and leadership development in a vocational setting •• Supervision and mentoring by experienced practitioners •• Support and feedback from Carey’s Field Education Co-ordinator •• A facilitated peer group to share the journey

YOUTH MINISTRY DISCOVERY INTERNSHIPS | Part-time 1 Year The Youth Ministry Discovery programme combines distance learning, block courses and practical hands-on experience that helps students gain some foundational knowledge and skills for ministry with youth—all while being based in their home church.

Students will interact with other interns around the country through CareyOnline, as well as having a supervisor, mentor and getting input from a Carey Ministry Coach. The Discovery Internship also helps students discern through their placement and learning whether they are called into vocational youth ministry.

Children and Family Leadership Programme | Part-time 2 Years The Child and Family Leadership programme is designed to equip children and family ministry workers to become more thoughtful and informed integrating head, heart and hand in the service of God. It involves an academic and formational component with Reflective Field Education, onsite Block Courses, weekly ministry praxis in a local church setting, supervision, online reflection with other students and support from Carey’s Field Education Co-ordinator.

Admission Requirements CERTIFICATE IN APPLIED THEOLOGY, DIPLOMA OF APPLIED THEOLOGY AND BACHELOR OF APPLIED THEOLOGY Normal Admission applicants must have achieved one of the following: •• National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) •• A minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework •• A minimum of 8 credits in English at Level 2 (or higher); 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits in writing. •• A grade of C or higher in each of 3 subjects in New Zealand University Entrance, Bursaries and Scholarships (NZUEBS) examinations. Special Admission New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who do not meet the normal admission requirements but who will have reached the age of 20 by the first day of the semester for which admission is sought and who are able to provide evidence of aptitude or appropriate work or other experience may be granted special admission. To gain admission to the Graduate Diploma in Applied Theology applicants must have completed a recognised undergraduate degree programme or be able to demonstrate equivalent practical, professional or educational experience of an appropriate level.

Applicants seeking admission to any academic programme (other than the Certificate or Diploma of Applied Theology Chinese language options) are required to provide proof of an acceptable level of proficiency in the English language.

MASTER OF APPLIED THEOLOGY AND POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN APPLIED THEOLOGY Normal Admission An applicant will normally have completed one of the following: •• a recognised undergraduate degree in theology or Christian ministry with a grade point average of B in courses of the undergraduate programme at levels 6 and 7 (or equivalent). •• a professional or other qualification which, in the judgment of the Academic Director, can be recognised as equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in theology or Christian ministry. An applicant who does not meet these requirements but who has completed a recognised undergraduate degree in a discipline other than theology or Christian ministry may be admitted as a candidate following successful completion of a bridging programme of study as determined by the Academic Director.

This may be shown by: •• A minimum of 8 credits in English at NCEA Level 2 (or higher) , or equivalent (of these NCEA credits, 4 credits must be in reading and 4 credits in writing) OR •• A minimum score of 6 IELTS (Academic) overall, with all bands (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing) 5.5 or higher Applicants seeking admission to the Certificate or Diploma of Applied Theology (Chinese language options) must demonstrate a minimum score of IELTS (Academic) 5.0 across all testing bands. ___ NOTE: This prospectus is intended for students who are New Zealand residents.
