Carey exists to form and equip followers of Jesus for participation in the mission of God. We do this by helping our students think deeply about the Scriptures and theology, reflect widely on the practices of discipleship and ministry, and engage critically with the contexts in which they live and serve. This kind of study is best done in community, and Carey is an extraordinary community— warm, creative, and deeply committed to the ways of Jesus. Our lecturers are excellent academics and experienced practitioners. They’re approachable and supportive, and they genuinely care about students and their formation. But you don't have to be based in Auckland to study at Carey. Through Carey Distance you can participate in our learning community wherever you live in Aotearoa. Our students come from a diverse range of ethnic and denominational backgrounds. Some are preparing for ministry on our pastoral leadership programme. This feather cloak was created for the Principal of Carey. It represents who we are as a learning community. The row of white feathers is a sign of leadership. The black feathers tinged with iridescent blues and greens represent the coming of the light of the gospel to Aotearoa, and reminds us of all those who went before and created a way for us today (Hebrews 12:1). The triangular niho taniwha pattern on the braid represents the triune God and is also a fighting pattern reminding us of the need

for strength and resilience to succeed in theological education. The poutama pattern, commonly known as ‘steps to heaven,’ signifies the transforming work of the Holy Spirit in making us more like Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18). The colours of the poutama indicate that all people are welcome at Carey and remind us of the great multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language that will one day worship before the throne and the Lamb (Revelation 7:9-10).

We want our students to be marked by a deep love for Jesus, the Bible, the church, and mission. We want them to develop the knowledge, skills, character, and practices to participate effectively in God’s mission in this world. We facilitate this kind of transformation through our integrative or applied approach to theology. In each course you will be encouraged to integrate your academic study with your life and your
context. Every student at Carey also has an opportunity to participate in a weekly formation group with other students, where they can integrate their learning and living. These groups form a significant part of our formal Pastoral Leadership and Youth Pastoral Leadership programmes. Students in those programmes will also come under the care of a staff mentor, an experienced practitioner, who will supervise them through a personalised development track. If you want to grow in your love for Jesus and become more like him, then Carey is set up for you.

From orientation through to graduation, we want you to think of this place as your place and the Carey community as your family, because learning is best done in relationship. Our campus is full of genuine care and community. Not only will you study, discover and unpack knowledge at Carey, you will also form friendships that last as you journey with other students and staff who are committed to supporting you, both while you study and beyond. Community is intentionally created through a number of special events each year such as bagel breakfasts and SENDing (which is when we celebrate some of our students who have undertaken our Formation tracks), as well as through our weekly chapel, community lunches, and prayer times that aim to make our campus an awesome place to belong.
Formation Group We take time each week to connect together in community to discover how God is working in our lives. It’s an opportunity to meet, support, pray, and encourage one another as we journey in study and life.
Community Worship Every Tuesday we gather together as a Carey community to worship in the chapel. It is a special time of worship, reflection, and preaching from a Carey staff member or special guest.

Monday & Tuesday Lunches Gathering together around food is a large part of creating community at Carey. Every Monday and Tuesday during semester Carey provides lunch at no cost for students. We also love to welcome the whānau of Carey students to join us for lunch.
Wednesday Prayers Staff and students come together in the chapel every Wednesday to pray for the Carey community, the wider community, our country, and our world.
Lunchtime Interviews with Guest Speakers On a regular basis Principal John Tucker interviews guest speakers. This is a perfect opportunity to listen and interact with effective pastors and mission or marketplace leaders as they share their personal stories in leadership and mission.
After Lunch Action After lunch is the perfect opportunity to break out the volleyball, basketball, table tennis, or darts. Students are encouraged to take part in a sports ladder as it’s a lot of fun and a great way to get to know others.

flexible study options Carey offers a range of course delivery options with the aim of making study flexible and accessible. These include:
Full-Time Study You can study full-time towards any Carey qualification. Full-time study allows you to combine on-site classes, distance study, and block courses into a study programme that suits your needs.
Part-Time Study You can also study part-time towards any Carey qualification. Part-time study allows you to combine study with other commitments such as employment, family, and church life. As a part-time student you can combine on-site classes, distance study, and block courses for a study programme that suits your needs.
Block Courses A number of block or intensive courses are offered each year. These are held either at our Auckland campus or at various locations throughout New Zealand. They usually last five days or have two blocks of two or three days.
Study by Distance At Carey we appreciate that it’s not always possible to study at our Auckland campus. This is why Carey Distance is so important to us. It enables you to study theology and prepare for ministry within the context you find yourself. Carey Distance provides you with the same academic rigour that you would experience by being in the Carey classroom while also connecting you with other students in learning situations similar to your own.
Study as You Serve At Carey we encourage our students to study alongside serving in church or ministry contexts. Our programmes allow you to gain credit for reflective field work, so your work in these areas can count towards your qualification. Our field education courses allow you to complete the requirements in your local place of ministry under the guidance of a nominated supervisor. This is a great opportunity if you are interning or serving in your church.
On-Site Classes Most courses are offered at our campus in Auckland, timetabled in weekly three-hour classes over twelve weeks of the seventeen-week semester. A number of these courses are offered in the evening making them accessible if you are in full-time employment.

The Carey teaching faculty is a community of faithful scholars who are at the cutting edge of applied theology research and teaching. They are not only highly qualified and respected academics, but they are also active practitioners applying what they learn and teach in church, mission, and community contexts. Above all they are followers of Jesus who want to work out their faith in authentic Christ-centred lives. In addition to the resident faculty, learning at Carey is enriched by contributions from adjunct and visiting lecturers including international scholars, MÄ ori Christian leaders and academics, and practitionertheologians with a range of ministry and mission experience. Staff and students alike value the authentic relationships that develop as they sit together at lunch and share in worship and community events. Our graduates are serving as pastoral leaders, chaplains, cross-cultural workers, children's and family ministers, youth leaders, and church planters. Others serve in community development or advocacy roles. Others work in non-profit organisations, or in academic positions. Many of our students study for their own personal growth as followers of Jesus and continue as his witnesses within their workplace settings. Carey provides ministry training to a variety of churches and their emerging leaders. The Ethnic Ministry Training programme focuses on equipping believers that have a non-English speaking background. You will join with students from around the world to study and develop for future service and leadership in your church and enhance the gifts God has given you. Learning alongside believers from other countries, you will deepen your understanding of God, the Bible, culture, preaching, family, and growing God’s kingdom. Carey is committed to helping every student achieve the dreams and goals God has given them and this includes offering financial scholarships for those students who would benefit from extra financial assistance. We provide access to a number of scholarships and funds for students studying in New Zealand. All are annual unless otherwise stated.
The scholarships cover undergraduate and postgraduate students who show academic potential and contribution to their field of work. Scholarship award decisions will be made on the basis of a completed application or nomination by the Carey Scholarships Sub-Committee. Completing an application does not guarantee you will receive a scholarship.

New Zealand Certificate in Christian Ministry General Admission: Open entry with NCEA level 2 attainment. Applicants with no secondary schooling or NCEA level 1 will require an entry assessment test. Certificate in Christian Studies/ New Zealand Diploma in Christian Studies / Bachelor of Applied Theology General Admission: Applicants must have either: • National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) with a minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the National Qualifications Framework and a minimum of 8 credits in English at Level 2 or higher (4 credits of which must be in reading with the remaining 4 in writing) or, • Grade C or higher in each of the three subjects in New Zealand University Entrance or Bursaries and Scholarships (NZUEBS) examinations. Graduate Diploma of Applied Theology General Admission: All applicants must have completed a recognised undergraduate degree or be able to demonstrate equivalent practical, professional, or educational experience at an appropriate level. Special Admission: New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who do not meet the general admission requirements but who will have reached the age of twenty by the first day of the semester

Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Theology and Master of Applied Theology An applicant will normally have completed one of the following: • A recognised undergraduate degree in theology or Christian ministry with a grade point average of B in courses of the undergraduate programme at levels 6 and 7 (or equivalent) or, • A professional or other qualification which, in the judgment of the Academic Director, can be recognised as equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in theology or Christian ministry. An applicant who does not meet these requirements but who has completed a recognised undergraduate degree in a discipline other than theology or Christian ministry may be admitted as a candidate following successful completion of a bridging programme of study as determined by the Academic Director. English Language Requirements Applicants whose first language is not English and who do not meet the waiver criteria listed in the International Student Regulations will be required to take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
Once an IELTS test is completed the applicant must provide Carey with a copy of their test results prior to acceptance on a programme. The minimum required results are as follows: • A minimum score of 6.0 in their IELTS Academic test, with a score of 5.5 or higher in all bands (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), for admission into undergraduate programmes. • A minimum score of 7.0 in their IELTS Academic test, with a minimum score of 7.0 or higher in the writing band, for admission into postgraduate programmes. • A minimum score of 5.5 across all bands in their IELTS General Training test, for admission into the Chinese language options for undergraduate programmes.
