Pastoral Leadership Training Training for pastoral leadership has taken me on some crazy adventures and into contexts and communities I had never been exposed to before. I loved being able to do my reading, writing, and study while working out what it all meant for everyday people in local communities and neighbourhoods. I am excited in continuing to work out my ongoing call as a pastor reflecting on who God is in time and place; who he is and what he is up to in his story of salvation in the world.”

Placements Integrated and applied learning in ministry. YEARLY PLACEMENTS A crucial component in Pastoral Leadership Training is supervised fieldwork in a local church or, where appropriate, an alternative ministry context. We recognise that students have different callings and passions. Placements are arranged that reflect the student’s particular training. SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS A key feature of Pastoral Leadership Training at Carey is the Summer Assignment. This assignment usually takes place at the end of year one, between mid‑November and mid‑February. It is normally a 11‑week placement within a church where students can experience something of the realities of full‑time ministry.
Evaluation The formation of pastoral leaders is crucial to the learning experience. A strong evaluative process is integrated into the three year programme. The process we use is designed to provide honest, open, and constructive feedback from a range of sources. REFLECTIVE ASSIGNMENTS Each year an assignment which captures progress in understanding and practise is completed. The assignment covers areas of ministry skills, self awareness, self care, and spirituality; which are each undergirded by theological reflection.
TUESDAY PRESENTATIONS At the conclusion of each module a 5-minute presentation is delivered to the year group cohort. These presentations help to track progress in the integration of studies, formation modules, and ministry placements. SIX MONTHLY REVIEWS These reviews are critical for evaluating progress in personal and professional growth. From this, goals are established to facilitate an ongoing personal development plan.
For me it’s without a doubt a ‘calling.’ It took me nine years to accept God’s call out of a successful job as a physiotherapist. I gave up my home to pay for it and moved away from my friends and family because God called me. Every time I get down with the pressures of my job God will speak to me about that call. The effort you put into sermon prep is so worth it when you see people getting fed biblical truth and the transformation that God does. Every time a non-believer comes to faith or a person gets baptised your fire gets ignited all over again. When a broken person moves towards wholeness the reward has no price. And God is forever growing us pastors to step up as He equips us. He calls us to greater heights the more we submit and learn. To turn away from God’s call feels impossible if I’m honest. When times are rough we just have to trust that those God calls He equips.”
