youth ministry DISCOVERY INTERNSHIP manatū taiohi tūhura The Youth Ministry ‘Discovery Internship’ combines distance learning, block courses, and hands-on experience that helps students gain foundational knowledge and skills for ministry with youth—all based in their home church. Students interact with other interns around the country; as well as having a supervisor, a mentor and receiving input from Carey and Baptist Youth Ministry Coaches.
Purposes of Internship SERVING Intentional ministry and leadership development in a church context. STUDYING Tertiary level study in Bible & Theology, Mission and Ministry including participation at block courses and formational learning times throughout the year. SUPPORTING Supervision and mentoring by experienced practitioners. Support and feedback through Carey’s Field Education process. Discovery interns also journey with and support each other as a cohort. The Discovery Internship is a twenty hour per week commitment—though some weeks will require more than others. This commitment will involve approximately ten hours of practical serving, eight hours of reading and coursework, and two hours of supervision and reflection.

Discovery Retreat

Cost Total of $4,044 incl. GST. This covers course fees, student services fee, FYM textbooks, Block course and retreat accommodation and food, ministry coaching, and regionally based training. You may be eligible for a study or living allowance and/or one year fees free through the New Zealand Government Fees Free Scheme feesfree.govt.nz.
Key Relationships THE CHURCH/ORGANISATION The church will provide a supervisor who will oversee the Intern’s day-today ministry experience. The church is encouraged to pay all or part of the costs for the Discovery Internship e.g. $4,044. The church may find other ways to give financial support like accommodation, food, petrol vouchers etc.
CAREY BAPTIST COLLEGE Provides course work as part of the Discovery Internship. Carey provides academic support for the year, as well as pivotal discernment conversations to help interns explore their call to ministry.
THE MENTOR A person outside the church whose focus is on supporting the intern to grow personally, spiritually, and as a reflective practitioner. BAPTIST YOUTH MINISTRIES Will be in relationship with the intern and the church. They will also be part of the entrance interviewing process. BYM will gather the interns nationally and regionally to facilitate their growth in youth ministry skills.
