Youth Pastoral Leadership Training I chose Youth Pastoral Leadership (YPL) because my passion lies with teenagers and seeing them discover their worth in Jesus. I’ve learnt organisational leadership, how to be an emotionally intelligent and self-aware leader and how to lead a team well—all great skills that’s equipped me to lead in different contexts. YPL is great because you train with like-minded people and it is a safe space where everyone brings their own perspectives and experience.”

Learning how to work with existing worship leaders and teams. The role of the pastor in corporate worship and the impact a Pastor has on the developing and discipling of musicians and artists in the church.
Ministry Placements Integrated and applied learning in ministry. YEARLY PLACEMENTS A crucial component in Pastoral Leadership Training is supervised fieldwork in a local church or, where appropriate, an alternative ministry context. We recognise that students have different callings and passions. Placements are arranged that reflect the student’s particular training. SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS A key feature of the programme is the inclusion of a ministry placement over the summer period. This placement is an opportunity to expand your ministry involvement a little deeper and/or wider; sometimes in an ongoing placement and sometimes in a new context. The summer assignment is normally from mid-November to late February with a holiday break included during this time.
Evaluation The formation of pastoral leaders is crucial to the learning experience. A strong evaluative process is integrated into the three year programme. The process we use is designed to provide honest, open, and constructive feedback from a range of sources. REFLECTIVE ASSIGNMENTS Each year an assignment which captures progress in understanding and practise is completed. The assignment covers areas of ministry skills, self awareness, self care, and spirituality; which are each undergirded by theological reflection.
TUESDAY PRESENTATIONS At the conclusion of each module a 5-minute presentation is delivered to the year group cohort. These presentations help to track progress in the integration of studies, formation modules, and ministry placements. SIX MONTHLY REVIEWS These reviews are critical for evaluating progress in personal and professional growth. From this, goals are established to facilitate an ongoing personal development plan.
Now that I’m in ministry I reflect back on my training at Carey and realise that Carey prepared me for all of the things I did not expect about being a Youth Pastor. The role of the Youth Pastor is wide and varied; one day you are planning a bowling night, next day counselling young people with loss, and all that is in between. The theological training I received at Carey underpins everything I do, from preaching to events. The ministry skills and experiences I received during the Youth Pastoral Leadership Training gave me the tools to put that knowledge into meaningful practice. I feel that Carey and Youth Pastoral Leadership Training is a must for anyone working with teens.”
