1. Introduction

The results of the annual Ecological Outcomes Verification (EOV) of Cargo Road Wines farm, carried out on 10th March 2021, are presented. This is the third year of monitoring for the land base. Baseline monitoring was previously carried out in ‘year 0’ and followed up with annual monitoring in ‘year 1’. This monitoring event is regarded as ‘year 2’ of the EOV monitoring and verification cycle.

The methodology used corresponds to the EOV 2.2 protocol. Ten monitoring sites were included for Short-Term in this year (year 2). Baseline monitoring previously (year 0) included four Short-Term sites (STM) and one for LongTerm site (LTM), while year 1 included ten Short-Term sites (STMs).

2. Short-Term Monitoring - Ecological Health Index (EHI)

An EHI evaluation was carried out of the landbase.

Ecosystem function is assessed through the Ecological Health Index (EHI). For this purpose, biological indicators are used according to an evaluation matrix that is adapted to each ecological region. The EHI provides a robust and practical measure of the health of ecosystem processes on agricultural production land (water cycle, nutrient cycle, energy flow and community dynamics) [Xu S et al 2019].

Each indicator receives a score according to the degree of departure from the ecological area potential. The values are added together to obtain a total score at each sampling site. The possible values range from +130 to -140. These quantified variables are surveyed in the field and then processed and weighted to obtain a value per paddock, and a weighted average for the farm. Values above 30 points in non-brittle environments and 15 in brittle ones reflect ecosystem processes (water cycling, nutrient cycling, energy flow and community dynamics) that are reasonably close to the potential of the site. Negative values indicate that ecosystem processes are ineffective, and far from the site's potential.

Cargo Road Wines is situated in a brittle tending environment.

3. Short-Term Monitoring Results – ‘Year 2’

EHI Landscape Function Analysis

The table below shows the EHI for each of the Short-Term Monitoring sites, along with an index for each of the ecosystem processes. The combination of indicators used for each ecosystem process can be found in Appendix A.

The second table shows the overall EHI, and the Landscape Function Analysis, weighted according to the area of each of the paddocks where the STM sites are located.

This data is then represented in respective bar graphs.

Conclusions from Short-Term Monitoring

From the short-term monitoring conducted on 10th March 2021, it can be concluded that the ecosystem processes overall are compromised to a small degree, and there is some variation in EHI. The highly positive scores on all sites show only some overall potential for improvement through future management approaches. All sites scored in the very high range.

EHIs varied from +70 to +100, with a weighted average of +82.4. This score reveals very good ecological health. Results are mostly only limited by 2011 Riesling, Cabernet 98, Sth House & Cherries which still scored well at 70 to 75.

Ecosystem Function Analysis

● Water cycle was only limited by the level of litter abundance in 2011 Riesling, Riesling 83, and Cherries. Dung decomposition and ground cover was excellent in all paddocks, and there was no sign of erosion or capping.

● Mineral cycle was also boosted by the lack of bare soil on all sites, but limited mostly by the lack of litter incorporation, along with reduced of signs of living organisms on five sites.

● Energy flow was reduced due to some reduction of vegetation cover and photosynthetic tissue (live canopy abundance) at four sites, but balanced by the lack of bare soil at all of the sites.

● Community dynamics were enhanced by a good mixture of the functional groups and their key species, although the pasture paddocks were generally not as good as the vined paddocks.

Conclusions from Short-Term Monitoring Comparison

● From the comparison of ten short-term monitoring sites conducted on 10th March 2021 (year 2) with that from the previous year (year 1), it can be concluded that the health of ecosystem processes overall has improved.

● Most indicators in all monitored paddocks have improved or been maintained. The indicator that fell the most was litter incorporation, which could have been a result of previous dry years and the lack of produced litter. The other indicator was undesirable species which occurred in one paddock only.

● While there is some variation in EHI between paddocks, indicating potential for improvement, all paddocks scored well and all paddocks improved. The average EHI improvement across paddocks was 28 The paddock 2011 Riesling improved the most.

● In year 2, EHIs varied from +70 to +100, with a weighted average of +82.4, compared with +54.6 in year 1 and -15.3 in year 0.

● All four indexes of ecosystem health (water cycle, mineral cycle, energy flow and community dynamics) have improved from Year 1 (2020) to Year 2 (2021), after also improving from Year 0.

● Energy flow showed the strongest improvement of 17% points.

● Water cycle was mostly affected by the improvement in litter abundance, but also by the improvement in ground cover.

● Mineral cycle was also improved by litter abundance and ground cover, but offset a little by a reduction in litter incorporation. Living organisms also showed an improvement.

● Energy flow improved mostly because of vegetation cover and photosynthetic tissue (live canopy abundance), but also the reduction in bare ground

● Community dynamics improved with all the functional groups scoring better, especially warm season grasses, along with ground cover. Only undesirable species had a lower score, due to observations in South House paddock.

5. Ecological Outcome Verification - Trend

The following analysis shows whether a trend of improving ecological health has been observed on the landbase: Cargo Roads Wines. Robust identification of a trend must be based on like for like comparison. The following chart identifies this trend based on comparison of 4 STM sites from ‘year 0’ and 10 STM sites for ‘year 1’ and ‘year 2’ monitoring events. Future monitoring events will be carried out across 10 STM sites, and will be used for future identification of trend. The number of sites was initially limited to contain costs.

EHI Trend - Monitored Sites

The EHI trend graph shows that the trend of Ecological Health is continuing to improve, on a 10 paddock basis. Under the EOV monitoring protocol, an improving EHI result means that the enterprise operating on this landbase is eligible to use the EOV seal, subject to confirmation by the worldwide EOV Quality Assurance team (and guidelines for use of the seal). Based on the improving trend observed in ‘year 1’, Cargo Road Wines is eligible to use the EOV seal.

Conclusions from Long-Term Monitoring (LTM2)

● From the long-term monitoring conducted on 10 March 2021, it can be concluded that this landbase site has a good mix of cool and warm season perennial grasses supported by a number of forbs and annuals. The presence of Annuals and Other forbs in the pasture is currently adding to the diversity of functional groups, without dominating. There was no bare ground, but good levels of litter between plants. The legumes were low in number of species and frequency.

● Overall, it shows a strong ability to support increased agricultural production. The results show highly functioning ecosystem processes.

● As can be seen clearly from the pie chart LTM SITE 902, cool season grasses and warm season grasses are currently dominating at this site, accounting for more than 70% of the cover, and with litter the combination is 83%.

● The Species Richness indicator is just above the cut-off point for the high range at 26, with the Shannon-Wiener index in the medium range, once relative abundance is taken into account. This reflects the moderate dominance of microlaena and native fescue.

● The Ecosystem Function Indexes show that both the Water Cycle Index and Energy Flow Index are strongly positive at 100%, while the other two indexes (Mineral Cycle and Community Dynamics) are both at 89%. This measurement for water cycle is strongly influenced by the degree of ground cover and litter, while energy flow was also determined by the high abundance of live canopy.

● All EHI indicators are showing positive or zero, with only minimal room for improvement in some cases.

● The observed water infiltration rates support the view that there is an effective water cycle potential, but the variability of the measured rates show that there is potential to improve consistency across this site. For instance, a short-term infiltration rate of 2.08 mm/min, could limit the capacity for available rainfall to be captured and stored in the soil profile.
