NOTE
I
f Ponce de Leon had ever tired of searching for the fountain of youth, he may have
been contented to find Barbados – “A Jewel of the Caribbean”. Barbados would have enchanted him with crystal clear waters, brilliant blue skies, a fascinating culture and the warmth of the islands people. Visitors who travel to the island are pleasantly surprised to find all that and much more. But behind the guise of palm trees, turquoise seas and smiling faces, there’s something hidden that visitors who flock to this island gem, would never know… November in Barbados is the beginning of an all out war! Yes! War! But not the kind you think! It’s a decorative feud between Independence Day (November 30th) and Christmas. And the battle that ensues takes place in homes, stores, the media and in the minds of thousands of Barbadians. While the decision of whether to don the blue, yellow and black or trim the tree is not as difficult as what Christmas gifts to buy this season, it’s always fun to see it unfold. When will the first Christmas song play? When will the lights go on and the decorations go up? Just what will happen this year? Whatever your decision, we hope that your season will be filled with the warmth of family, friends and God’s blessings for a Happy Independence, a Merry Christmas & a joyous New Year. Happy Reading!

BAJAN WORD OF THE DAY
Kawblema (Kaw∙bleh∙muh) Injunction
“Oh my goodness” Stems from the saying “God blind me if it isn’t true.”
Perfume An elderly Bajan lady is in an elevator in a high rise apartment building in New York, going to visit some relatives. A beautiful, young woman gets in smelling like very expensive perfume. She turns up her nose at the old woman and says arrogantly, "Giorgio, Beverly Hills, $120.00 an ounce." The elderly lady with a deadpan expression says nothing. Another young and beautiful woman smelling expensive, enters the lift, turns, looks down her long pointed nose at the old lady and says "Chanel No.5, Paris, $200.00 an ounce." The lift is now filled with the aroma of the magnificent scents of the combined perfumes. One floor later, as the Bajan lady approaches her destination, she quietly eases out a long silent burst of gas, which quickly overpowers the combined expensive perfumes and leaves the two women with water in their eyes. As she steps out of the elevator, she turns and says "Breadfruit, Barbados, 36 cents a pound."
COMMON USE – “Kawblema, gas prices gone tru de roof!” INTERPRETATION – “Oh my goodness, gas prices have become extremely high.” Defined & Illustrated by Nicholas Ward’s Bajan Slang Dictionary. Available at all Ganzee locations, Cave Shepherd, Pages, and other locations. Contact Nick at nicholasmlward@ gmail.com for special orders!

Check out our ratings for this editions’ top 5 picks on the island. Ratings run from 1 Flying Fish (Poor) to 5 Flying Fish (Most excellent). Be sure to visit every one of them. The Crop Over festival, sometimes coined the sweetest festival, is indeed the most highly anticipated festival on the island. The festival attracts participants from across the island, region and the globe. It starts with the ceremonial delivery of the last canes (i.e. the crop is over) and ends with a massive street parade made up of heart pumping, calypso music and beautiful costumes in an array of vibrant colours. Throughout the season there are nightly events to attend - art shows, calypso tents, soca fetes and so much more. The festival runs from late May/ early June until the first Monday in August.

ARLINGTON MUSEUM Don’t be surprised if you get struck by Pirate fever after a trip to Arlington Museum. An intricately designed blend of old and new, this interactive museum provides a one of a kind view of old Speightstown and provides insight into what it may have been like to be a swashbuckler. The museum is home to a prominent feature on Stede Bonnet, an early Barbadian pirate and ravager of the high seas. Check out his exhibit on the top floor.
FOLKESTONE MARINE PARK & MUSEUM Almost right next door is a natural reserve for ocean life. The Folkestone National Park is a great place to take the time to unwind. You will find access to amenities such as picnic benches, glass bottom boats, playground and snorkeling…there’s something for the whole family. Oh! Be sure to look out for Simon Cowell! Yes we said Simon Cowell… from American Idol. He owns a nearby home right here on island and is frequently spotted on the surrounding beaches. So keep your eyes peeled, he may be walking by.
HOLETOWN CHATTEL VILLAGE The west provides a bevy of retail experiences for the avid shopper. This includes the islands chattel village, a unique island experience, with fantastic shopping hidden behind the façade of old Barbadian homes of yesteryear. The area has been fashioned to provide a “jalousie window” to that time.

id you watch the movie “Date Night?” Where Steve Carell took his wife, Tina Faye, out for what was supposed to be a great night on the town – Unfortunately the night turns into quite the opposite, with them being chased all over the city by two goons. We suggest you avoid the drama of their night on the town, but we just love the idea of date night to break up relationship monotony. Leave the kids with the sitter and head out for an adventure “Steve and Tina style”. Unlike the movie, we suggest you avoid wearing your clothes backwards and stealing reservations, instead here are a few of our date night favourites.
dat e NIGHT icecream DINNER Quiet time alone gives you the opportunity to talk. Couples, especially those with children, after a while forget how to talk to each other. Conversation becomes a chore rather than a pleasure. Find a nice quaint restaurant, get close and get chatty. A FEW WE RECOMMEND Cafe Luna, Tides, Champers. Intimate Settings For Intimate Conversations.

Ice cream dates have been a favourite since the dawn of time (well since the dawn of ice cream). Sweet, simple and romantic.
It's not about sounding the best, it’s about living in the moment! I once challenged my hubby to work up the courage to sing karaoke... and we recorded it... and it was bad... really bad! But the following week, we did it again…why? Because no matter how bad it sounded …it was loads of fun!

FUN & FETE CAAHN DONE! ISLAND VIBES & NIGHTLIFE
JUST
danCE!
Music is an integral part of island culture in Barbados and the Caribbean. When a beat drops so does a Bajan! Ok, well maybe, not! But Bajans can party all night long; will leave one party to go to another, or as is seen at so many Crop Over fetes, can keep going from sun up to sun down... and back up again. Fortunately, we don’t expect you to live that lifestyle while you are on vacation but we do expect you to shake a leg at least once during your stay. Check out our nightly activities time table to decide what to do.

At the gap you will find, dinner, dancing, karaoke, clubs, a bit of souvenir shopping and hotels, and a whole lot of liming.

SPA DAY...
justbecauseyoucan!
So you’ve made the choice to come to Barbados and don’t feel like sun, sea, shops or social life today? Why not spend the day pampering yourself? Our Suggestion – Keep that beautiful face beaming with a fantastic facial, and if you need an excuse to tell your hubby, significant other or to justify the splurge to yourself then here are “9 great reasons to get a facial.”
1 2 3 4
We all want to look younger, even when we happen to be 20. Regular facials can help the face to radiate a more youthful glow. A facial will help to breathe life into dull, lifeless and clogged skin. Stress be gone We all like to be pampered and one of the first places that stress rears its ugly head ironically is on your face! Muscles become tense and tight, circulation slows causing those pesky miserable lines to start to form over time. Facials can help to firm & tone underlying muscles and tight muscles=tight skin= less wrinkles It helps to improve skin elasticity.

It helps to even skin tone resulting in more radiant healthy looking skin. A massage will stimulate blood flow and help the flow of oxygen and other nutrients to the skin and surrounding tissue. Reduces the ageing process by helping to improve cellular regeneration. Supple skin sounds and looks fantastic. Regular facials aid the skin oils and fluid balance resulting in supple skin and less tension lines. Possibly the best reason of all… because you deserve it.

Guinea Plantation may be off the beaten path but total worth the detour as a venue for Weddings, functions & Events. Located in scenic St. John, it was one of the first sugar plantations built on the island and references to Guinea Plantation date as far back as 1654. It derived its name from being stocked all at once with Africans from the Guinea Coast. Additionally, the location holds some cultural and historical significance as the first seedlings of the mango brought to Barbados in 1742 were planted on the property. This spacious property was first owned by Humphrey Walrond, but now has been beautifully restored by the new owners, the Forde Family. Today they cater to weddings, events and tours. Soft & chewy!
Guava Jam
melt in your mouth!
This local chewy candy is a delight among the young and old. It is made using guavas, a local fruit found throughout Barbados. The green fruit yellows when ripe and as has delicious inner flesh that can vary from pink to white, and is filled with small edible seeds. The guava cheese is really not a cheese at all. It is prepared by cooking together guava pulp, sugar and spice, and is a sweet way to end a tasty and hearty Bajan meal. Guava cheese is easily prepared, and is also readily available across the island.
Every now and then even though we’re supposed to watch the calories I love to treat myself to sweet candy heaven.
Tamarind
Sweet & sour goodness!
Balls
This sweet and sour treat is made by rolling the pulp of tamarind into little balls and sprinkling them with sugar. The sugar helps to appease the tangy flavour of the tamarind. Tamarind trees are found around the island, and produces brown, edible fruit. The tree is not native to Barbados, but rather was imported from the African savannah, and introduced to the island by the early settlers in the 17th century.
Sugar Cakes
Yet another sweet Bajan treat is, sugar cakes. This snack is prepared using coconut, water and sugar, and the end result is a mouth-watering delicacy. It is quite easy to prepare, and makes a delicious dessert item, or evening snack. This is a must try for candy foodie and cooking enthusiasts.
And not just the stuff that manufactured in bulk at the candy factory, I mean old fashioned Bajan Traditions.
Nut Cake Sweet& crunchy!
Contrary to what its name implies, nut cake is not a cake achieved by baking. Instead, this sweet treat really achieves its texture through boiling sugar until it reaches a desired constituency and then adding peanuts and spices.

all Seasoning in the
E
ver wonder what makes Caribbean food sizzle with that spicy, tasty, flavourful, melting pot of all things divine? Well in Barbados it’s the seasoning. Bajan seasoning is a common staple in Barbadian households, made from a mix of various fresh herbs and spices, (usually locally grow) such as thyme, marjoram, parsley, basil, clove, black pepper, paprika, salt, garlic, and onions. This flavourful seasoning can be bought in various supermarkets all over the island, but many Barbadians, like to make their own, as it can be relatively easy to prepare. Bajan seasoning can vary from hot to mild and if you have already eaten locally prepared meat or fish, chances are you have already sampled this tangy seasoning. Often called the secret ingredient in Caribbean kitchens, this wet seasoning is used mainly on meats and fish to add extra jazz and zing. It is usually placed between the meat and skin before grilling, baking or frying. It can also be used on vegetables (such as eggplants), or used to add flavour to soups and sauces.

Grandma’s Kitchen! W
atching my grandmother prepare meal after meal was the reason I grew up to love cooking. She made every meal seem ‘Oh So Easy’. A sprinkle of this, a dash of that and in no time at all the meal was prepared. One of our favourites and a popular dessert for many Bajans is Cassava Pone. I must admit that if Granny ever tried to give me cassava as a child, my nose would crinkle, my eyes well up with tears, I’d stick my tongue out and run off to hide at the utter thought of having to eat the monstrosity. Fortunately as a child I never
Cassava Pone
quite put together that pone was made with the ingredient that I dreaded so, and it was a good thing too or I might have missed out on this popular treat. Cassava is a tuberous, starchy root or ground provision and it is the third largest food carbohydrate source in the tropics used to make a wide range of products from alcohol to flour. Granny would purchase the root whole but today the cassava can be bought ready done, grated or prepared as flour – Just another readymade luxury that would have stolen quality time from me and my granny.
Method
Ingredients
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
4 lbs peeled and grated cassava
2. Grease loaf pans.
1 lb sugar 1 tsp salt 1 small grated coconut 2 tsp ground cinnamon 2 tsp grated nutmeg 2 tsp vanilla essence ¼ lb raisins ½ lb butter
3. Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl, adding enough milk to moisten but not soak the mixture. 4. Allow mixture to sit for 15 minutes, then pour into greased pans and bake for 1¼ hours. 5. The bread is finished if when stuck with a match stick or fork the end comes out clean. 6. Allow to cool, then slice.

2. Cover peas with cold water and place in refrigerator to soak overnight Or boil until peas begin to soften. 3. *Wash salt meat and place in pot with enough water to cover, add the onion, bay leaf, celery and fresh herbs. Bring to a boil and reduce to simmer. 4. Remove peas from refrigerator, pour off water and add fresh water, enough to cover the peas, and bring to boil along with two bay leaves.
20 minutes later, the peas should be soft enough to squeeze between your fingers but not fully cooked. 5. Add the rice, and meat, along with water from other pot. But not too much water, add as needed. (If you are using large pieces of meat, leave them in their pot to cook fully. Instead, only add the meat broth to the rice and peas.) 6. Stir rice and peas to evenly distribute only once. Cover pot tightly and cook over a low heat. After 15 minutes check to see if more water is needed. 20-25 minutes later the liquid should be gone or almost. 7. Rice and peas should be soft and cooked. If not, add a ½ cup of liquid and cover pot tightly. Continue cooking for 5 more minutes, then turn off heat.

A PIECE OF ART / CRAFT
Bajan artisans are among the most talented in the world with pieces gracing the walls in such affluent homes as the white house and hanging in galleries and museums worldwide. If you can afford a sizeable original painting then these impressive timeless works are sure to be a treasured souvenir that will most likely increase in value as time passes. However, if your purse is a little “lighter” then consider the functionality of a print, a small painting or another type of craft (leather, pottery etc.) as a valuable keep sake.
2

Barbados is known as the birthplace of rum and our oldest rum Mount Gay is 311 years old. Mount Gay stands as the oldest recorded rum in the world and a bottle of their 1703 makes and excellent gift for loves ones or connoisseurs.

We just love the ceramic option, perfect for kitchen counters or for living or dining
46 | GO BARBADOS
Our tastes fall toward the little chattel houses, colourful replicas of a slowly disappearing architectural style from a bygone era. Also straight out of the time machine are the mother sally / fruit vendors, which ca still be seen to some degree selling fruit and vegetables island wide.
4
RUM CAKE
If you don’t want just rum, then try cake with rum. Bajan rum cake is similar to English Figgie pudding, but much better. Check out our February edition for a fab black cake recipe or if you aren’t a baker buy a cake and indulge at home. Share it with family & friends or save it all for yourself while you reminisce on your trip to Barbados.
5
SAND
We may take it for granted, but for some, this time on the island has been their first and possibly their last encounter with beautiful pink sandy beaches. Those are the ones that you see frolicking happily on the beach or tanning from sunrise to sunset. We feel that a beautiful bottle of the good stuff to go along with your epic holiday stories could be just perfect to remind you of the great times you had in Barbados.

I’m a local but I still have a have a magnet that says “Barbados Dreams” sitting at home on the refrigerator, but to be honest I collect them! Conversely nothing is easier to buy or as reasonably priced as a magnet or key chain! It’s the perfect item for those who have to buy multiple gifts, and a keepsake that can last for years.

selfie mania! 52 | GO BARBADOS
S
elfie mania has taken the world by storm. This trend is insanely popular with celebs, the young and the young at heart. Over a million selfies are taken on a daily basis, so chances are, by now most people have seen one. In fact, 48% of all selfies end up on Facebook, 14% are sent by text, 13% are shared on What’s App, and 9% on Twitter and Instagram. But before you upload those selfies you’ve been dying to share, if you have ever deleted more than a few bad selfies from your phone frown no more…here are the secrets to taking fabulous selfies. But, before we go… wait…let me take a selfie...
LOOKA DE VIEW SIGHT SEEING
GET THE
RIGHT ANGLE
To make your face look slimmer, shoot your selfie from slightly above. Holding the camera slightly higher than your head so that it's pointing down on you will make your eyes look bigger and help you avoid "pig nose." If you’re including your torso in the shot, turn one shoulder slightly towards the camera. Stick your neck out just a little, which will help eliminate that little bulge under your chin. If you turn your head a few degrees to the right or left, your features will appear less flat. Instead of taking the picture head-on, experiment with different angles to show off your features. Angling the camera slightly above yourself and taking a snapshot of your face and chest will highlight your cleavage.
USE A
FILTER! You are very likely going to be using a smart device to take that selfie, unfortunately those cameras are the ones most likely to capture blemishes and accentuate those less than flattering features. Play with a photo filter to see what types of photos you can create which will hide the negative bits and inch you closer to selfie perfection.
LIGHT
IT UP!
During the day choose natural coming from behind you. That lighting will make you look soft and beautiful. At night (if you can) tilt the camera so the light glows across your cheek bones. Avoid the desire to use the flash or stand directly under a light, it can add dark shadows to your face that won’t help that selfie to get any likes!
STAGE IT! Be aware of your surroundings – Take a quick peep behind you to avoid the rabbit ears, the photo bomber or the string of dirty laundry that you need to hide from the internet! If you still haven’t gotten it quite right then use that crop and zoom feature! After all the models use Photoshop, why can’t you?
DO YOU! We would tell you to avoid the duck face but you certainly already know that! Highlight your best assets. Try to get your face and just a bit of your shoulders included in the shot! Why not smile? Nothing lasts like a smile in a perfectly staged shot! This takes us to our next point.
DON’T OVERDO IT It’s been said that selfie mania is an unnecessary act of narcissism, so avoid being that guy who posts a new shot every hour. However, once you consider using that camera on yourself in moderation, it’s just another way to share your life with your friends or fans and have fun! Go for it and Good Luck!

caribbean dreaming Born and raised on the beautiful island of Grenada, Kay Kelman is a Caribbean artist living in Los Angeles, California. There she is well on her way to becoming an artist with global appeal. “I’ve always been interested in various forms of art,” she says, “but one day I stumbled across a tourist in Grenada painting a scene of the Careenage.” Transfixed, Kelman knew from that moment that art would become an important part of her life. She went on to study at Oral Roberts University for Graphic Design, and completed her BA at Oklahoma State University. Kelman’s artwork is distinctive. “I use oil and 80% acrylic and try to achieve movement by particular brushstrokes and composition. Barbados is famously the only country Washington ever visited outside colonial America and Washington marked his two-month stay with several journal entries in his diary. Adding to the intrigue of the house is a network of recently discovered manmade caves, over which the house was built, that stretch for miles in many directions.

IN & UNDA DE SEA! OCEAN ADVENTURES
LOOKING SEXY WHILE COVERING UP I
t’s always summer (and swimsuit season) in Barbados with 365 days available to go to the beach. Beach or pool, it pays to have a flattering look! One that accentuates the positive, while hiding all the little bits, which we can sometimes be self-conscious of - something sexy, savvy and comfortable that makes us look and feel fantastic. A cover up is a fun and functional way to achieve this, so here are our suggestions. A CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON
It’s said that there is nothing sexier than a half naked woman in a man’s shirt. In some instances this may be correct, but luckily, we can just go out and get us a “boyfriend shirt” tailored to fit our bodies and curves. They are suitable for any body type, but don’t you dare play shy! The buttons down the front are great for peek-a-boo with your assets and a boyfriend shirt in linen or cotton are great for keeping cool on the beach.
TRY A HOODIE
Yes, we said hoodie, but don’t run out and buy a sweater or a sweat shirt. Instead look for a cute hooded dress, is an adorable option for a cruise or an outing that will extend into the night.
CROCHET, NET OR MESH
For those looking to show off a little more without giving away the entire show, a sexy crochet or mesh dress might be just the thing. This naughty but nice option will cover it all and expose it all - at the same time, leaving everything else to the imagination. This is a sexy and cool option for these hot island days.
BEFORE YOU BUY Tips for making the right selection
THE KAFTAN OR MAXI DRESS
If you’re looking for a sultry way to cover up that beach body, try a Kaftan or a maxi dress, the length adds a touch of elegance and sophistication that’s easy to transform from the beach to a dinner table or an elegant party with a simple change of shoes and accessories.
WRAP IT UP
The beach wrap or Sarong is a classic beach cover up. Easy to use, easy to pack and exceptionally versatile with several different ways which it can be worn. With so many beautiful print and options to match any skin tone and swimsuit, it should be easy to find one that fits your personality.
TOTALLY TUNIC
If there was just one piece that’s a “must have” for your closet of beach accessories then the tunic is that item. The tunic is available in several colours, styles and lengths and are a compliment to most body types. We suggest the classic Bohemian tunic, most popular with a plunging neckline and split at the side for added sex appeal.
1
Buy something that will make you feel super sexy, that shows off your best asset (Yes we all have one!) If you like to show a little cleavage, a lot of leg, hide everything or leave little to the imagination, the tunic and boyfriend shirts are great for all of the above.
2
If you burn easily then select an option with a sleeve that can help shade you from the suns rays if your sunblock (heaven forbid) is not at hand.
3
On hot days a cool fabric is a plus, but if you plan to wear the cover up outside of the beach then try to select a fabric that is cool, durable and flexible (in terms of suitability) for day and night.
4
Embrace length cautiously, choose a lovely flowing maxi dress or kaftan if you want to feel sexy while covering those bits, but be sure to inspect your rear end before purchase, as some materials can be quite unflattering.

Know how to handle cramps
Overexertion and tiredness can cause your limbs – calves or feet especially, to cramp up. If you do get a leg cramp, do not panic. Shout for help, lie on your back and paddle back to shore.
Don’t estimate depths
If you are venturing into new waters take your time and walk out. There is the possibility that you may find that it deepens suddenly. Also be sure not to dive into the water not knowing the depth. It may be shallower than it appears, causing you to be injured, possibly even severely.
Be mindful of hidden currents
Watch out for hidden currents to avoid drifting away with the waves - pay close attention to how far you are from the shore can assist with this. If you are not a strong swimmer, be sure that water comes no higher than waist level. That way, if you begin to drift, you will still have some security which will allow you to stand. If you get caught in a rip current - it will pull you out to sea but keep calm, conserve your energy & try to float, then swim back at a 45 degree angle to avoid getting caught again. If you cannot do this then
72 | GO BARBADOS
tread water or float and yell to attract attention.
Check for lifeguards
There are many beaches to choose from, which have lifeguard stations. When choosing your beach spot, check for lifeguard huts and if you do decide to swim at a beach where there is no attendant, be as cautious as possible. Also, if you are alone, be sure that there are other swimmers around. That way if you get into difficulty, someone could be around to assist. Find a full listing of all beach amenities online at www.gobarbados.org
Avoid Manchineel trees Sometimes found on the beach (usually marked with red paint) they carry a small fruit similar to a crab apple – DO NOT touch or eat this fruit! It is poisonous! In fact even standing under this tree during the rain can be hazardous as dripping rain from the tree can blister the skin and eyes.
SUN DAY FUN DAY SAFE DAY! A visit to the beach can be fun filled and invigorating. But there are some dangers out there of which you must be aware. Here are ways to make a day at the beach, a fun and SAFE day...

he island slowly awakens, birds start to sing their melodious song, the sun rises and the flowers open to the start of a new day. Sunbeams play happily on the ocean, and kiss the skin of sun worshippers to delightfully transform the pale to a golden brown… a delight for some and a challenge for others. When it's time to hit the beach, be sure to account for style, comfort and safety. While the experience is sure to be fantastic, the extended exposure to the sun…Not good for your skin! Sunburn is uncomfortable but more importantly, it’s risky to your health. Below are some ways to stay protected.
HAZMAT GEAR! Some scientist have predicted that in the distant future we will all have to wear full body suits, much like Hazmat gear to protect us from the sun. Until that day comes, we could practice by wearing a little protective clothing! Sunglasses, a broad rim hat and cover ups will add to the sexy, mysterious, sea farrier and offer a bit of protection when you are out on the sand. Remember that sunlight can penetrate thin and light coloured clothing, but heavier, dark clothing will likely keep you hot. Find a middle ground to keep you cool and still provide some protection.
LIP PROTECTION We usually remember to protect their skin but neglect our lips. But UVA & UVB rays are bad for the lips as well, causing dryness, cracking and even stirring cold sores. So remember to protect those kissable lovelies with a proper lip balm, that’s between SPF 15 and 18.
SUNSCREEN
HYDRATE Hydration is important at all times and it’s even more important to revitalise your body when in the sun for long periods. Apart from being good for digestion, absorption and a host of other bodily functions, water is great for your skin health. Pack a large bottle (or bottles) of water and be sure to replenish your fluids regularly. Also note that hydrating you skin topically is also important.
74 | GO BARBADOS
AFTER-SUN CARE After you return home from an enjoyable day in the sun, there is still more which you can do to protect your skin. Apply an after-sun product, to replace lost moisture and to prevent the escalation of any damage, which may have occurred
Sunscreen is very important to your skins health! So for your day in the sun be sure to have the right one. Choose broad spectrum UV coverage which is waterproof and SPF 15 or higher. Broad-spectrum UV coverage means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. This along with the proper SPF will ensure proper protection. Look for the seal of approval on the bottle and apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside. Be sure to re-apply after coming out of the water or after any sweaty activities.

THOUGHTS ON

MENS BEACH STYLE
ny time is a great time to head to the Beach in Barbados. But have you put any thought into what you might wear? With the world becoming more and

more fashionable, there’s no reason to let is pass you by. Yes! Being on holiday is a good excuse to relax and let go but why not be sexy and stylish there too? It’s easy with our “head to toe” guide to beach style.
IN & UNDA DE SEA! OCEAN ADVENTURES
GO TOP GUN Start simple! These days you are sure to see more than a few people with shades on, even at night! Clearly sunglasses are a must have accessory! Sunglasses are a great way to protect your eyes, while adding a bit of mystery and sex appeal in the process. Take the time to find a high quality pair of sunglasses that really suits the frame of your face. What colour suits your style? Buy a dozen cheap pairs for every occasion or a classic style for any occasion. Have you seen the movie “TOP GUN”? … Can you say Aviator’s? Whichever style you select, always remember

there’s never a good reason to wear them at night!
DARE TO NOT GO BARE (BACKED)!
While surf trunks are out in the fashionable parts of the world, they are still very acceptable for the Caribbean, in bright colours and patterns. However if you really want to stand out,

Because there’s still the Polo! Try pastels and bright solids or nautical stripes - for a casual high-end beach look, or try a solid or patterned tee for a more relaxed look. P.S. Ensure any top is a great balanced compliment to your bottom.
HEADS UP! A hat is a fun way to stay stylish and cool in the hot Caribbean sun. If you are willing to try a hat then the straw trilby or the fedora are just what the doctor ordered, this is the ultimate in men’s beach fashion. With several styles and colours to pick from, it should be easy to find one that is perfectly suited to you. Feel free to also try the golf/flat cap, visor or certain cuts of straw cowboy hat, but in our opinion the fisherman’s/bucket hat…is pushing it!

Pros & Cons
of Living by the Sea Pros
IT’S ON THE BEACH We could begin and end this list with just the one item. No commuting, no wait, cool evenings, beautiful sunsets, morning exercise! It is always there at your disposal and you can literally just jump in when the mood strikes. IT’S A STRESS REDUCER Sea breeze, soft sand and the sounds of the waves all create a serene environment, away from the hustle and bustle of day to day life. You can just head out after a long day for a stroll across the sand or soak away those worries with quick dip in the ocean, a book, soft music, a glass of wine unwind at your convenience. BETTER AIR QUALITY The continuous ocean breeze not only provides clean, fresh air but because of the negative ions in the ocean air, you can experience an increase in the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness and more mental energy.
Cons
W
aking to the sounds of waves rolling onto the shore; the fresh, crisp, clean ocean air; the call of passing seagulls as you have your morning cup of joe at the waters edge; and enjoying the serenity of the ocean whenever you wish... sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? A seaside home is a dream come true for many…your personal island retreat, a summer home, or a condo to retire to. However ocean front living is a lifestyle which comes with its own faults. So before you buy into the dream of perfection, it is best to weigh the pros and cons of living by the sea.
EXPENSE The high demand on beachfront properties means that these homes will always come at a premium. MAINTENANCE The effect of the salt in the atmosphere is usually quite damaging to materials within and around the home. Maintenance costs will therefore be much higher than homes inland. TOURISTS AND VISITOR CROWDING Beach rentals are usually in high demand for tourists. You are trying to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but so are they. In some areas crowds may cause your escape to become less tranquil.
ADVENTURE You could literally find something different to do every day. The options are endless…walking, jogging, swimming, diving, surfing, fishing and so much more.
SUSCEPTIBILITY TO BAD WEATHER hurricanes build strength over large masses of open water - this means that when they first reach land, they are most destructive - leaving ocean front property at a greater risk.
RENTAL INCOME Oceanfront property can be quite expensive, but there are ways to turn this into an investment. While out of town, rent it temporarily to tourists and vacationers. There is always a market for beachfront properties.
HIGHER INSURANCE RATES Because of the higher risk of damage due to storms, potential rogue waves or flooding and salt air that comes along with oceanfront living, insurance companies will charge a premium.
As with any type of property, oceanfront homes have their pros and cons. Personally we would take the risk and purchase a home in a heart beat, but do your research on the area as every oceanfront community will not be the same. From crowds to weather patterns, select an area that will be best for you.

baTHSHEBA This stunning beach certainly is one of the prized gems of the East Coast. Here one can see the Atlantic Ocean in her uninterrupted splendour, amidst breathtaking backdrops of remarkable stone formations, beautiful lush landscape, and pristine waters. Here, the currents are very strong, making this beach a favourite for surfers in Barbados. Here the sand is wonderfully golden, and a careful search could unearth beautiful sea shells. It is certainly one of the most ruggedly beautiful beaches Barbados has to offer, and
St. Joseph is one of the most popular. Surfers are known to frequent what is known as ‘Soup Bowl’ in Bathsheba, and host year round activities there. It’s a very good beach for picnics and photos so be sure to walk with your camera! While not suitable for swimmers, the formation of quite a few natural pools make it possible for sea lovers to still get wet. Bathsheba is also of historical value to Barbados as it is the site of the old train line, which was operational in the 1800s. Bathsheba certainly has no lack of activity and beauty.
