New Prosperity Mine update
C o m m u n i t y hearings continued Wednesday and Thursday last week in Xeni Gwet’in, with a number of First Nation presentations. Councillor Marilyn Baptiste spoke of the economic development plans that the community wishes to execute, with the focus on jobs within the community. This included specific details of a Cultural Tourism Partnership program with the Xeni Gwet’in and the hopes to develop a traditional village site and visitor information center in order to provide local jobs to community members. Ms. Baptiste noted that the challenge with economic development, such as the tourism plan, is that they do not take place quickly and that support is required. Chief Roger William made an hour long presentation outlining the history of the Xeni Gwet'in people. He described his frustration with the mine process which began in the 1990’s. Chief Roger also outlined some positives such as the working relationship the Xeni Gwet'in people had with Taseko from 2005 to 2008 and the drilling reclamation work the Xeni Gwet'in enterprise has done on the site of the proposed New Prosperity mine in 2012. Chief Roger described the work done to “create a picture” of the project between 2006 and 2008, work that remains incomplete after the government of BC pulled out of the process. He said, “This picture, our elders, our youth, our community together - put it together with the company, federal government and provincial government. That was sort of our idea. So when B.C. pulled out, everything changed.” It is an approach Senior VP of Operations at Taseko, John McManus, has been familiar with since his first meeting with Chief Roger and other Chilcotin Chiefs in 2005. McManus acknowledged that the progress towards “painting a picture” broke down. He

Ryan Roberts Hello, my name is Ryan Roberts. This is my fifth year in 4-H as a Rose Lake Miocene member. The reason that I am writing this letter is because I would like to invite you to the 55th Annual 4-H Show and Sale and tell you about my project. This year I did a steer because I wanted to raise something from our ranch. I was lucky because my steer was already halter broke! My steer was already named Ace by my sister because he was a 4-H calf from the beginning. My sister, Camille had raised him as a cow calf project and I bought him of her last fall. Ace is a Black Angus steer that has grown on our family ranch- Roberts Ranching. Ace has a long frame
and has become well-muscled due to how well I regularly exercise him and how much he enjoys our feed mix. To exercise Ace, I lead like to ride my horse and lead him. He is raised naturally with no hormone implants. I can show you around and anwer any questions you have when you come see us at the Show and Sale at the Williams Lake stock yards on August 17th to the 21st.
Nicole Bailey My name is Nicole Bailey and I am Lot #112. This is my first year as a Junior, and, so far, it has been a lot of fun! I am with the Rose Lake Miocene 4-H Sheep Club. My lamb, Sir Gregory, is a Clun Forest cross, and at our club’s achievement day he weighed 88 lbs. I have learned so much this year, I would love to tell you all about it! So come out to see us at this year’s 4-H Show and Sale at the Williams Lake Stockyards at 4665 Cattle Dr. We’ll be there with all our other local 4-H clubs and all the projects from Friday
August 16th to Wednesday August 21st with Sheep Day on Sunday the 19th. Sale night is August 21st with all the action starting with the Parade of Champions at 5:30pm and the sale starting at 6:30pm.

Skye Forcier Well it looks like it’s here again, Show and Sale! It seems like just yesterday I was looking through a field of baby calves looking for the perfect one to take care of this year. This is my seventh year in 4-H and this will be my fifth steer project. The excitement never gets old, I never stop learning and every year seems just as frantic as the last. Throughout the year I have spent hours with my steer, grooming him, feeding him, bathing him, and training him for your enjoyment. My name is Skye Forcier and I belong to the Rose Lake/ Miocene 4-H club. This year I’m wearing lot number 126. My steer’s name is Buck, he’s a Black Angus born and raised on my family’s
ranch where he and my heifer are grass and grain fed. As always it was a great year but it all leads to these 5 days where all our hard work with our projects comes to fruition. Don’t miss it ladies and gents, come out to the 54th annual Show and Sale! I would also like to personally thank all our buyers, supporters, parents, and leaders. We could never do it without you. Let’s get’r’done!
Tyrell Watkinson Hi, my name is Tyrell Watkinson, I am 17 years old and this is my 9th year in 4-H. I am also a Senior member of the Springhouse 4-H Club and my Lot# is 177. This year I am doing a Beef project again. Previous years I have completed Fed Sheep, Ewe Lamb, Ewe with Lambs, and Swine. My Beef’s name is Shades because of the differences in the colour of his hair. I purchased him from Tierney Watkinson, my sister, who was also a 4-H member – his mom won Grand Champion Mature Cow/Calf a couple of years ago! Shades is a Black Angus steer crossed with a Hereford, and also has a little shorthorn in him. He has a wild, yet curious personality.
He behaves well, but I still have a lot of work to do with him. I like being in 4-H because I like working with farm animals, also I like to visit with my many friends in 4-H too. I was reluctant to join 4-H this year, but a certain “someone” persuaded me. I am glad I was encouraged to do 4-H again this year because I know it will be a great experience.
Tyson Mahon Hey there. My name is Trevor Mahon, I’m 14 years old and I am a member of the Rose-Lake Miocene 4H Club. This is my first year in 4H and I have taken on a Steer Project. My steers name is Napoleon and he is a Red Angus Cross. I hope to see you there at the 55th annual Williams Lake and District Show and Sale at the Williams
Fire Centre keeps busy with weekend wildfires
The Cariboo Fire Centre was kept busy during the weekend with 25 new wildfires sparked by lightning storms on Saturday and Sunday. Wildfire Management Branch crews, airtankers, helicopters and heavy equipment were all used to action the fires. There was also one person-caused wildfire. The number of phone reports received from the public allowed the Cariboo Fire Centre to respond to these fires quickly
and efficiently. The Wildfire Management Branch would like to thank the public for their assistance. There are currently 28 active wildfires in the Cariboo Fire Centre, including: a 1,200-hecatre fire in Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial, northeast of Anahim Lake; a 12-hectare fire in the West/East Twin creeks drainage, southwest of 70 Mile House; and, an 11-hectare fire near Till Lake, west of Williams Lake.
The current fire danger rating in the Cariboo Fire Centre is high with areas of extreme. Both the campfire ban and open burning prohibition remain in effect. To report a wildfire or prohibited campfire or open burning, call 1 800 663-555 toll-free or *5555 on your cellphone. Vivien Meyrick This is my third year in the Horsefly 4-H club and my first year as a junior. This is also my first year as a photographer. When I take pictures I think “would I like this in my house?” I like to take pictures of places I go and of my friends. Please come out to the 55th Annual Williams Lake Show and Sale. It’s on August 17th to the 21st, and on the 21st there will be a Buyer’s Dinner from 3pm to

Cody Bailey Hello, my name is Cody Bailey and I am a 4th Year Junior at the Rose Lake Miocene 4H Club. My Lot # is 111 and my project is a market swine. I decided to try something different this year, so I went with a purebred Duroc swine. He has been a great pig to play with because he’s so curious! He likes to follow me around and check stuff out, like sticks and peach pits. Come and see me and my porker Peter strut our stuff in the show ring on Pig Day, Tuesday August 20th at this year’s 4H Show and Sale at 4665 Cattle Drive. The entire event runs from Friday August 16th to Wednesday August 21st.
All our local 4H clubs and projects will be there for you to enjoy; from small engines, photography and horticulture to beef, swine, and sheep. Keep Safe this Boating Season Enforcement officers will be on the water to make sure everyone is following the boating safety rules. So, to keep safe and avoid fines, remember: Prepare before you set out • Check your boat before leaving shore and make sure you have all required safety equipment on board. Don’t forget to ensure it is in good working order. • Make sure you have one Canadian-approved lifejacket or personal flotation device (PFD) in the right size for each person on board. Remember, it won’t work unless you wear it! • Don’t forget to carry your pleasure craft licence and your proof of competency. • Check the weather forecast before you set out. Safety rules on the water • You must always have a spotter in the boat when you tow someone tubing, water skiing or wakeboarding. • No youth under 16 years old may operate a personal watercraft. For more information on boating safety, please visit www.tc.gc.ca/boatingsafety
ning of road sub-excavation near Hodgson Road. The unsuitable base material under the road will be removed and replaced. The public is reminded that the portion of South Lakeside Drive between the Cariboo Adventist Academy and Hodgson Road is a construction area, and rough patches of road are to be expected. The contractor is regularly working on grading and repairing rough areas, but patience is requested because the high volume of traffic causes road condition to deteriorate quickly. Motorists are also reminded to obey the posted 30 km/h speed limit. Traffic flow will be single-lane alternating. South Lakeside Drive will be repaved from Hodgson Road to the Cariboo Adventist Academy, the merge lane from Hodgson Road will be extended to Pioneer Drive, and a pedestrian/bike lane will be added from Hodgson Road to the Cariboo Adventist Academy. Work on the project is expected to continue through September.

This week by the numbers €100 – The British pounds it will cost to transfer Welsh International soccer star Gareth Bale from London's Tottenham Hotspurs to Spanish giants Real Madrid. The Spanish media continues to breathlessly predict that the reigning English Premier League player of the year, Bale, will soon join Real Madrid in for the world record transfer deal. 25 – Years since the Edmonton Oilers made the most significant trade in NHL history dealing Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angelese Kings in August 1988. The growth of hockey culture in the U.S. in the two-and-a-half decades since the Gretzky trade is undeniable. In 1990-91, for example, USA Hockey had 195,125 registered players; in 2012-13, there are 510,279. 1547 – The number of Blizzards sold at Williams Lake Dairy Queen during Thursday's Miracle Treat Day. DQ raised $8,609.98 through the sale of 1547 Blizzards which tops last years total by $400. 44 – The number of years since Mike Belkin in 1969 was the last Canadian men’s tennis player advancing to the semifinal stage
of the Rogers Cup (formerly Canadian Open) in Montreal. Ironically, two Canadians advanced to this year’s semifinal where Thornhill, Ontario native Milos Raonic and Vernon, B.C.’s Vasek Pospisil had a semifinal showdown Saturday at the Rogers Cup. Raonic went on to win the match before losing the eventual final to Spain's Raphael Nadal. 26 - year-old John Shelton was arrested Wednesday following the sham traffic stop in San Miguel County, New Mexico. Authorities say a man driving a truck with police lights on top made a crucial misstep during a bogus police stop in northern New Mexico. Police say the two men he pulled over for speeding were real state police agents in an unmarked vehicle. Investigators say Shelton had a pistol on his hip and told the agents he was a member of the New Mexico State Police Search and Rescue and a trained law enforcement officer — something officials later discovered wasn’t true. Shelton is facing charges of impersonating an officer. 63 – The age Julius Erving can still dunk a
basketball on a regulation 10 foot hoop. I watched a fantastic NBA TV documentary on Julius Erving called “The Doctor.” It is a great look at the player and his impact on the game, on Philadelphia, and it’s a great look at one man’s quest to win a ring. It’s also moving as Erving talks about the death of his father and his son. Oh, and he can still dunk. The documentary shows that, too. While it’s not quite as high, you can still see the graceful outline of a guy who was one of the great dunkers the game has ever seen in there. 80 – The age of Yuichiro Miura, a Japanese mountaineer, who in May, 2013 became the oldest person to reach the summit of Mount Everest. While the climb up was difficult, Miura said the descent nearly killed him. Miura had previously scaled Mount Everest two other times, at the age of 70 and five years late at the age of 75, and he returned to the mountain last week to climb the 29,035 feet needed to reach the peak, the Associated Press reports. After conquering Mt. Everest for a third time, Miura promised to take it
easy after the descent nearly cost him his life. 9.77 – The seconds it took Jamaica's Usain Bolt to win the men's 100-meter final at the World Track and Field Championships in Moscow, Russia Sunday night. Bolt regained the 100meter world championship title he lost through a false start two years ago. Bolt blew by Justin Gatlin with about 30 meters to go and never glanced back. He also didn't even crack a smile when he crossed the finish line because this took a lot more work than the world's fastest sprinter usually needs. Gatlin was second and Bolt's Jamaican teammate Nesta Carter took third. .598 – The winning percentage of Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates who as of Tuesday held the second best record in the majors at 70 wins and 47 losses. The Pirates have taken after the Oakland Athletics money ball formula as they have one of the lowest payrolls in the league. They sit three games up on the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central Division and are poised to make the post season since Barry Bonds led them there in the early 1990's.

Beer parlour experience started from age five I was going to name this column ‘Canadian beer parlours I have known and loved’. Except that I never loved any of them. In fact, I hated them. Poor excuses for an English pub where locals got together to drank flat beer, eat hearty food and engaged in song around the piano in fine camaraderie. Not that I have entered too many beer parlours over the years, as except for the regular glass of wine with dinner, I’m not much of a drinker really. And it has been proven that a glass
of red wine actually is good for the heart right? (On the other hand, a bottle consumed creates a hangover I quickly found out.) My beer hall experience started when I was
about five years old and under my grandfather’s care. He took me to a beer parlour in a local hotel and made me sit on a hard wooden bench handing me a pack of peanuts, then disappeared for what seemed like hours, to drink beer with his old buddies. He liked to quote W.C. Fields. “My wife drove me to drink, and I’ve been thanking her ever since.” Of course I told all this to my mother as I was quite indignant even at that age. Gramps got the ’what for’ believe me. Leaving a child
alone? Good God! My parents were also frequenters of beer parlours and when I came of age invited me to attend. I hated the places, basically large utilitarian rooms that were without culture or decor furnished with formica tables and metal chairs. What’s worse, they stank of stale beer, cigarette ash and a greasy stench from the kitchen. The bathrooms were usually perfumed by a whiff of vomit seeping through the heavy smell of bleach. There was always a drunk or two
passed out at the tables and when the places were full (which was often), the cacophony of voices and slurred dialogue overrode any decent conversation one might have. Most times one had to shout to be heard. Why anyone would want social discourse of that kind was beyond me. Some of the rural beer halls did provide some diversion in the form of fights among patrons which made it sometimes necessary to dodge flying chairs and glasses. There was one attempt at civility in
those days, by providing separate entrances, one for men and the other for ‘ladies and escorts’. My sister and her husband Roy, an exarmy guy, favoured the various Legions scattered across central Ontario where I was brought up and they at least were a notch better with occasional dances and dinners. They would go on a Legion crawl verses a pub crawl, their main social life as there were many within easy driving distance among the small towns in the area.
My sister who never once wrote and never called me up on the phone for a chat, called slightly sloshed, one night from her favourite Legion about 2:30 AM proudly announcing that she had just won the Orillia and District, Senior Ladies Dart Championship. “That’s nice dear”, I mumbled groggily!” The only other phone call I got from my sister was a few years later where she simply asked me; “Bob am I crazy?” “Yes you are dear, goodbye!” But I digress.

Board to audit Nazko Logging The Forest Practices Board will examine the activities of Ndzakhot'en Forest Management (Nazko Logging) in the Quesnel District during the week of Aug. 19. The audit will examine timber harvesting, road construction, maintenance, silviculture, fire protection and associated planning activities carried out by Nazko for compliance with forest practices legislation. Nazko's operations are within the
Quesnel timber supply area (TSA) near the village of Nazko, about 100 kilometres west of Quesnel. The TSA also includes the communities of Wells and Barkerville in the east and is home to several First Nations communities. Once the audit work is completed, a report will be prepared, and any party that may be adversely affected by the audit findings will have a chance to respond. The board's final report and recommen-
dations then will be released to the public and government. The Forest Practices Board is B.C.'s independent watchdog for
sound forest and range practices, reporting its findings and recommendations directly to the public and government.
The board audits forest and range practices on public land, as well as appropriateness of government enforcement.

Mines needed to keep gravy train rolling The environmental hearings into the New Prosperity mine continue this week in the First Nations communities out West and will be there until August 21 and then on Friday, August 27 the closing remarks will bring the one month session to a close. I don’t think the First Nations communities will be able to say they didn’t have an opportunity to have input into the 2013 environmental hearings. There will have been two weeks of hearings in Williams Lake and two weeks in the Chilcotin. Many of the same people presenting for First Nations

The title question however remains unresolved. The Tsilhgot’in war of 1864 was also brought up at the hearings and I wonder what that had to do with environmental hearings for a mine. Some folks think that Fish lake was never the issue...it’s about land claims. Prosperity and other mines are another method of keeping the gravy train rolling in the Cariboo Chilcotin. The final day of the hearing is next Friday August 23 and closing remarks will be held at that time so the parties involved will summarize their overall conclusions. The last day
will be held at CJ’s Southwestern Grill and then the panel has 90 days to make a submission to the Feds. As mentioned previously in this column I believe the Conservative Government in Ottawa will make the right decision to allow this mine to go ahead so their can be some prosperity once again in the Cariboo Chilcotin country.

Karena Sokolan Hello, my name is Karena Sokolan and I love 4-H. I am 12 years old and I have been in the Chimney Valley 4-H Club for six years. This is my 3rd year in beef with a market steer. I have had so much fun over my years in 4-H. This year I am a reporter for my club and it is a lot of fun. My steer is named Houdini like the great escape artist. I named my steer Houdini because he is a great escape artist. He has gotten out so many times. He is quite a bundle of mischief. When he gets out we usually find him by the hay bales by the barn. But twice Houdini and my brother’s calf went walk a bout and were gone for days. It took a helicopter and a snow machine to get them home. The second time they were gone for days but found their own way home which was
nd
awesome. Houdini is a Hereford X and has a brown coat and a tiny little patch of white on his forehead. Houdini is so sweet and lovable as well as a trouble maker. Houdini is a bucket full of joy but he is still a lot of work. If you would like to appreciate all my hard work and many other members’ hard work please stop by for the 55th annual 4-H Show and Sale from August 17th to the 21st. The sale is on Wednesday August, 21st /2013 at 6:30p.m. So, please come, enjoy yourself and maybe even bid on Houdini or other amazing animals.

MLA Oakes visits northwest B.C. Kate Barnett I am seventeen years old, this is my tenth year in the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H club, this year I have a market steer, a cow calf, and a herd project. My market steers name is Julio, he is a Black Angus, who I purchased from Joe and Annemarie Baur, on July 4 he weighed 1130 pounds, I am hoping he will finish around 1250 to 1300 pounds. Julio is currently eating twenty-two pounds of altweisser, which is made corn, oats, barley, calf pellets, and beet pulp, and eighteen pounds of Timothy/alfalfa hay. I will be showing and selling Julio at the 55th Williams Lake and District 4-H Show and Sale on August 21st. Along with Julio I also have a cow calf pair, my cow’s name is Macy who is a two year old Red Angus cross, Macy’s calf name is Einstein, Einstein is also a Red Angus cross. Macy and Einstein are currently being pastured
Kimberley Davis Hi! My name is Kimberley Davis and this is my 4-H market ewe lamb. Her name is Sadie and she is a Dorset lamb. This is my 3rd year in 4-H and I am 12 years old. My lamb has been quite a bit of trouble this year. The first day we got her she ran away when we’re trying to weigh her. We chased her through the bush in our flip-flops till we caught her. When we finally did catch her she was so worn out we thought she was going to have a heart attack. But she lived. Awhile later she got attacked by our German Shepherd but wasn’t hurt very badly. Then two weeks later she got out of her pen and was gone for 30 hours. I don’t think we ever would of found her if it wasn’t for my Border Collie
in Horsefly, with the bulls. I will be showing Macy and Einstein at the 55th Williams Lake and District 4-H Show and Sale. This year I also have a herd project, in October I picked five heifers that I wanted to keep and raise, who’s names are Sally, Martha, Betty, Sue, and Helega, when picking the five heifers I had to not only pick them on there individual qualities, but also on how they looked as a group. Now my five chosen heifers are out in Horsefly with the bulls, I will be bringing all the heifers back next year as a cow calf group. I hope to see everyone at the 55th Annual Williams Lake and District 4-H Show and Sale, starting on Friday August 16 continuing on until sale day on Wednesday August the 21st!
Teak who brought her back. Sadie was in bad shape. She had puncture wounds in her neck and a patch of wool ripped out of her back. My mom was positive she wouldn’t live, but she did. So that’s how my year has been – although challenging I have learned a lot. So, on August 21st I hope to see you at show and sale where you can bid on many 4-H projects including my resilient lamb. _
Cariboo North ML A, Coralee Oakes, also appointed Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development recently completed a tour of northwest British Columbia, with stops in Prince Rupert, Port Edward, Terrace and Kitimat to discuss anticipated impacts of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry's expansion on communities in the region. "I wanted to hear ideas on how we can prepare for the generational opportunity of LNG development.
I enjoyed meeting people from the great communities of northwest British Columbia and will be working hard on their behalf in Victoria. Through my service as a Quesnel city councillor and North Central Local Government Association director, I can bring personal local government experience to the table as we move forward together." Northwest B.C. is positioned to face historic employment and investment growth as the province's LNG industry develops.

Megan Cramer Hello there, I’m Megan Cramer and I’m twelve years old. This is my first year in 4-H and I’m member of the Chimney Valley 4-H club. I’ve had a love for animals since I was three years old, so this year I decided to do market swine. My market swine’s name is Pig Mac and his lot number is 48. Pig Mac loves to drink right from the hose!!!!! The things I enjoy about 4-h are the judging rallies, working with my pig, meeting new

people, and fun day. I am also really excited for the show and sale and hope that everyone will have a good year in 4-H!!!!!

Melanie Wintjes My name is Melanie Wintjes LOT #154. I have been in 4H for 6 years and I have finally talked my parents into letting me raise a steer! Waldo is a purebred Hereford and is part of the Rose Lake Miocene 4-H Club. We would love to see you at this years Show and Sale!
Mikayla Blusson My name is Mikayla Blusson and I am 16 years old. I am a member of the Chimney Valley 4-H Club and this is my 5th year in 4-H. My lot number is #41. This year at Show and Sale I will have a male market swine. His name is Bif, which stands for Bacon is Fabulous (but don’t tell Bif that, he doesn’t know that’s what his name stands for). Bif weighs 200lbs and is a lean swine. I love being in 4-H and having a market swine. 4-H has taught me responsibility, how to
care for animals, and how to speak confidently to the public. I encourage you to join other members and me at the 4-H Show and Sale to experience a little bit about what 4-H has taught me. See you at the Sale.
Orrin Watkinson Hello there, my name is Orrin Watkinson and this is my second year as a senior member of the Springhouse 4-H Club. I am fifteen years old and this is my sixth year in 4-H. In previous 4-H years I have completed Cloverbud and Fed Lamb Projects. This year I am doing a Fed Steer by the name of Scarr. He is a Hereford Cross and he weighs around 1200 pounds. He is very friendly and easy to work with. Our lot # is 176. Scarr is a home-grown steer that I purchased from my grandparents, Fred and Barb Watkinson who own Foster Bar Ranch in Lillooet, BC. I joined 4-H so that I could learn about raising a
fed steer and all that is involved in showing and grooming a beef project. I enjoy attending the 4-H functions and getting together with other clubs, especially at Show and Sale. 4-H is a great way to learn to work with animals and members alike and to do various events and projects; 4-H teaches many life skills.
Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor The people of Bella Bella are focused on rebuilding and restocking. It's been over a month since a fire in the wee hours of Friday, July 12 gutted the seaside community along B.C.'s Central Coast. The blaze which was deliberately set by three teenage girls destroyed the community's only grocery store which contained a post office, cafe and liquor store. “I think the rebuild process is coming along just fine. The community has been very resourceful,” said Bella Bella RCMP Sgt. Glen
Caston. “We've got a temporary store in a local church, the post office in in the elders building and the liquor store is at the old fish plant and the cafe is up and running at a new location as well.” According to Caston, he feels from an outsiders perspective that the store has been able to keep up with the demand. The rebuilding of the store is currently still in the planning phase but it will not be rebuilt at its existing location. “We know that a new store is going to be built as a brand new structure at a different

Bob Blacker, Rotary Club member and aid to Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon, has helped procure a module building for a temporary library. Various Lower Mainland rotary clubs and Britco (module building company) have a temporary building being shipped from Tsawassen to Port Hardy and on to Bella Bella in the next few weeks. “We've had a ton of book donations and with the help of Rotary Club and the government we've arranged for a temporary library structure on its way,” said Caston. Blacker's impact has already been felt throughout the
Cariboo Chilcotin region. He founded the Dental Missions which brought the UBC Faculty of Dentistry to Anaham Reserve in July to offer residents three days of free dental services. He was also instrumental in bring the blue rotary libraries to Toosey and Stone reserves. The three girls aged 13,15, and 16 responsible for the fire were arrested and RCMP investigators have forwarded their report to Crown Counsel, who are reviewing whether to charge the teens. If the teens are charged with arson it's likely they can avoid entering the criminal justice system. In dealing with a small tightknit community like Bella Bella a restorative justice program is likely the case. The girls have made apologies to residents and claim they did not intentionally start the fire.

Mountain Bluet beautiful but a pest The feature for this week is not your everyday garden variety; it’s beautiful but can be a pest! Mountain Bluet also known as Bachelors Button and Perennial Cornflower is a popular garden plant that we have on our priority list because it is spreading in the Cariboo Chilcotin. Mountain Bluet is native to Europe and was brought over as an ornamental but it readily escapes gardens all over the world, it has now become established in the British Isles, Scandinavia and some parts of North America. Mountain Bluet grows up to 18 inches tall, has silvery-green wooly foliage and has blue and purple lacelike flowers at the ends of the stems. It usually flowers from May to August. How can this beauty become a garden nightmare you ask? Mountain Bluet has many invasive plant traits; it is a self-seeder and also spreads rapidly by above ground roots. This plant is tolerant to many different environments such as drought and alkaline soils. It is persistent once it has established and one plant can live up to 15 years in ideal conditions. Treatment options for Mountain Bluet: Small Infestations: Hand pulling but make sure that all parts of the plants are dug up including root fragments. Do

Lorna Dixon Lorna Dixon and I am 11 years old. This is my first year having a steer. I’m in the Canim Valley 4-H club. My steer is a Hereford cross and I named him Hobbes. Raising a steer is a lot of work but I think he is coming along great. So far it’s been fun feeding, brushing, and bathing my steer. He shows his appreciation by licking my yellow boots. I joined 4-H because I watched my older sisters Kailtlyn and Kalei with their steers and now it is
my turn. I also joined 4H to meet new friends and I am looking forward to show and sale. Come by and say Hi to me and Hobbes.
Maeghan Watkinson Hi, my name is Maeghan Watkinson and I am eighteen years old. I was first introduced to 4-H when I was six years old in Merritt B.C. I did my first year of 4-H there and I have now been in 4-H for a grand total of twelve years, by being a part of the Springhouse 4-H Club. 4-H has brought me closer to the value of agriculture and to a better understanding of the industry. I have to thank my parents for allowing me to have this opportunity to become more informed so that in the future I will have the chance to have my own ranch like my grandparents. This year I am doing only a Swine Project. My Swine is a purebred Landrace, and I’d purchased him in April from Walter Hengstler; his breeder was Larry Jalcubec from Alberta. I named my
pig Re’ev; we will be under the lot # 175 during the Show and Sale this year! The Show and Sale is a must see for animal lovers and children. There are always classes throughout the long week designated to particular projects, and everyone is welcome to attend. 4-H is a unique learning experience for the young and old. So why don’t you come on down to the 55th Annual 4-H show and Sale held August 16th-21st at the Williams Lake Stockyards!
Marcus Kennedy Howdy, my name is Marcus Kennedy and I’m from the Chimney Valley 4-H club. I’m 10 years old and this is my second year in 4-H. This year I am raising a market hog, he is hilarious! My pig’s name is Skittles, he is a Yorkshire. I got Skittles from Wally Hengstler. Skittles weighed around 65 pounds when I first got him and has grown to the ideal weight of 140 pounds to date. I love my pig so much and he has taught me how to care for an animal properly. Last year I did remarkably well and I hope to succeed even higher this year! During
this 4-H year I have participated in a few events such as club speeches and judging rallies. My speech was on Hockey. I placed second in the junior category. I really hope to see you at this year’s 55th annual 4-H Show and Sale on August 16th to the 22nd! See you soon!
Maria DiMarco Hello Williams Lakers! My name is Maria DiMarco and I am a member of the Big Lake 4-H Club. I have two projects this year: a pig named Pebbletail and a dog named Shasta. I also have the role as club reporter this year; if any of you have seen the Big Lake Newsletter, you’ll know that. Pebbletail is a Landrace female pig. She lives in a pen with her probably brother, Hammer. Pebbletail is quite friendly. Shasta is my award winning Papillon puppy. I have been in 4-H with her for three years if I count this year. My first year Shasta achieved 1st in unit one (out of 1_), and in the August Show and Sale she achieved
1st out of three and best groomed out of all of the probably 10 dogs. She also got 7th in agility. Last year Shasta achieved in unit two and she and I attended the Kamloops Dog Show. I did not achieve in that but did pretty well and got an award for being the only junior. Anyway, I’m pretty excited for Show and Sale, aren’t you? Wish me luck please!
Mason Able Howdy. My name is Mason. I have been in 4-H for 2 years. I am enjoying my second year very much. My project is a swine his name is Han Solo he is a very good looking Duroc. He weighs just over 220 pounds and has some delicious hams I bet! On August 20th is the swine showmanship and market class, so I hope you can come
out to see him in action at this year’s 55th annual show and sale.

BC 4-H celebrates 100 great years "The object (of these competitions) is to train the heads and hands of the boys and girls; to give them broad and big hearts; to improve their health by giving them an interest in outdoor life; and to encourage on the part of all British Columbia citizens, a stronger and more intelligent interest in agriculture." Such was the goal of the 4-H movement when it started in 1914 in British Columbia. During this first year, over 200 young people between the ages of 10 and 18 were involved in competitions sponsored by the Department of Agriculture. Originally the program focused on potatoes as a project but was expanded later that year to include poultry in order to interest more youth and to widen the influence of progressive farming practices on the BC farming community. Clubs were originally known as Boys and Girls clubs until they were renamed 4-H clubs in 1952 to more
clearly represent the four H's - head, heart, hands and health. Swine, beef, dairy, corn, potato and poultry projects were popular in the early years, with the Department of Agriculture being instrumental in providing project training, instruction in judging and, support. In the 1950's and 60's, more effort was placed on recruiting and training volunteer leaders to assist with the clubs. While project training continued to be an important part of the program, the development of the individual 4-H member was given greater emphasis with a focus on public speaking, judging, citizenship and self development. Provincial Club Week began in the 1960's as did member travel to national 4-H programs in Canada and the United States. In 1965, the Provincial Advisory Council (now called the B.C. 4-H Provincial Council) had its first meeting. Today the Council, comprised of volun-
teer representatives from each of the eight 4-H regions across the British Columbia and the Yukon, continues to be the policy making body for the BC 4-H organization. In the 1970's and 80's, non-agricultural 4-H projects including crafts, environment, and outdoor living, were introduced as more non-farm youth joined the 4-H Program. Since the start, the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Lands has been highly supportive of our Program. Through the current partnership agreement, the 4-H Provincial Council is responsible for administration, management, policy making, marketing and sponsorship for the provincial 4-H Program. The Council currently employs four staff members to carry out these responsibilities in concert with the Council and it's committees. Operating out of the new office in Vernon, the staff consists of a Manager, Administrative Coordinator, Fund Development Coordinator, Fund Development Assistant, Program Coordinator, and a Communications and Marketing

Coordinator. Ministry Youth Community Development Programs staff are responsible for leadership training and program development and delivery. This partnership encourages 4-H's increasing responsibility and ownership of it's own program. Today, almost 3,000 young people between the ages of 6 and 21, together with thousands of volun-
teer leaders, families, alumni and sponsors, make up the 4-H Program in British Columbia. Horse, beef and sheep projects are the most popular, however, increasingly more members are enrolling in projects such as dog, rabbit, swine, llama, Cloverbuds and others! There are abundant opportunities for both members and leaders - travel, training and education, scholar-
ships, ambassadorship, fun and friendships. 4-H is cross-generational! Many former members whose parents were club leaders, become leaders themselves as their children enter the 4-H program. 2014 will marked the 100th anniversary of 4-H in British Columbia. While 4-H has changed and evolved a great deal since it's start in 1914, the impact of the pro-
gram on our young people is as relevant today as it was back then. 4-H continues to teach young people to successfully meet the challenges not only of their own futures but also the future of their communities. From the 6 year old Cloverbud member to the 21 year old 4-H Ambassador, the 4-H program continues to be a fantastic training ground for life.

New outdoor rec. map for West Kootenays
To help celebrate 20 years as Canada’s leading outdoor recreation publisher, Backroad Mapbooks have gone back to their roots. Founders Russell and Wesley Mussio grew up in the Kootenay where they learned their love for the Great Outdoors. The new waterproof West Kootenay Outdoor Recreation Map is tear
resistant and extra rigid for those variable mountain weather conditions while showcasing a fresh look with more recreational opportunities than any other map for the area. “We will always have a soft spot for the West Kootenay area. After all, this is where we learned to fish and hunt, went on countless hikes and
spent many days camping and paddling,“ explains company cofounder Russell Mussio. Whether you’re exploring Valhalla Provincial Park’s sheer cliffs or testing your luck in the big waters of Arrow or Kootenay Lakes, the all new waterproof West Kootenay Outdoor Recreation Map is a must-have.
Do you have an event that we should know about?
Smart Seniors want to know.
The map essentially updates the old, out of date forest service recreation map for the Arrow and Kootenay Districts. It features detailed topographic information with up-to-date industry and logging roads, extensive trail systems and a ton of recreational features that are not found on other maps. The series was born out of the Mussio brothers’ frustration with what was available for exploring the outdoors. Russell recalls. “We‘d literally have a
different map or book for hiking, for hunting and for fishing, along with a few outdated Topo maps with us; it was almost comical. It felt like we had to carry around a box full of stuff in the bush with us. We looked at one another and said, ‘This is ridiculous.”Twenty years later, the printing press which shared the apartment living room with Russ has been replaced, the rudimentary maps have evolved and over 1.5 million copies have now found
homes with fans of the outdoors across the country. The in-depth reference and map information requires a team of local researchers and writers to ensure regional information is accurate and noteworthy. Relationships with fishing and outdoor clubs, park superintendents, hiking enthusiasts, Government Ministries, and of course, feedback directly from readers also contribute to maintaining the most up-todate maps available.
“We can’t thank our partners and local help enough”, states marketing manager Matthew Cosar. “Groups like the Castlegar Friends of Parks and Trails, Quad Riders ATV Association of BC, BC Parks, and Recreation Sites and Trails BC were instrumental in providing insider details for users. Also we would like to mention Ross Elliott, Tom Lymbery Owner of The Gray Creek Store and Bob Dupee for taking the time to help create this map.”

Blacker lends helping hand to First Nations Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor Through introducing libraries, dental clinics and working with isolated First Nations communities throughout the province, Bob Blacker has dedicated his life to helping others. The Rotary Club member of Steveston-Richmond and aid-de-campe to Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon has made an impact on thousands of people's lives. Blacker worked as a police officer in New Westminster before retiring 17 years ago. In 2000, then Lt.-Gov. Stephen L. Point asked Blacker to become his aid-de-campe. “From that little nugget of a conversation we've now got all these libraries,” said Blacker. Point, former chief of the Skowkale First Nation and the province’s first aboriginal lieutenant governor, asked Blacker what Rotary was doing to promote literacy. Blacker discussed all the wonderful things being done abroad in places like Indonesia, Africa and Malaysia. Point, who made literacy a key focus of his term, thought “Very nice, but what is Rotary doing to help literacy in B.C.?” “At Rotary we do all these great international projects but right here in our own backyard we've got places resembling third world countries so he (Point) wanted to concentrate more on that,” explains Blacker. The Williams Lake Daybreak Rotary Club was actually the
trend setter is starting Government House/ Rotary Literacy Project community libraries. What started off as a small idea to provide a modular trailer to serve as a library for the Toosie band in Riske Creek has taken off. Blacker has been the main 'shot caller' in helping set up nine community libraries across B.C. “Williams Lake were the first Rotary club to come forward to put a library in Toosie, so they were the champion that sparked this,” said Blacker. Blacker commends the work of lakecity rotarian Shirley Pat Chamberlain. “I swear she puts a finger in a light socket every morning because she's just a little bundle of energy and without her we would never have come this far.” Blacker, who received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in February, 2012 for his rotary service, has been nothing short of a saint to the First Nations people of B.C. He recently answered a call for help from Bella Bella to help re-open the Thistalalh Memorial Library after the July 12 fire caused extensive damage. 18 month's ago Point and Blacker visited Bella Bella and sat down to look at the idea of furthering Point's vision and starting a library there but they already had a great library. “They had this wonderful little coffee shop and library so we thought they've already got a library and left it

They are excited about arrangements to re-open a new library at the end of August. at that,” said Blacker. “Then I received a call from Library Director Jesse Housty after the fire happened asking for help and I said I'll get right on it.” Through Blackers connections he was able to arrange for a new library. He contacted Britco General Manager, Christoph Neufeld, about sending a module building. Brian Van Sickle of London Drugs came aboard as his company provides HP computers, printers and wifi to the libraries. Burnaby RCMP Chief Superintendent Dave Critchly arranged flights to Bella Bella on the forces aircraft and photographer Dave Plett offered his services as well. “We flew up in the RCMP aircraft and sat down with Jesse and sealed the deal,” said Blacker. “Brian donated three computers, one for the office and two for the library to get them up and running.” BC Ferries agreed to have the modular
building shipped free of charge from Tsawassen up to Port Hardy and then on to Bella Bella. It is expected to arrive in late August. Housty has been overwhelmed with the support they've received. “It's been really astonishing how much support from across the province we have received,” said Housty. “Our new library is expected to arrive at the end of August fully renovated and with shelving,” Blacker's impact has been felt throughout the Chilcotin as he co-founded the Dental Missions which brought the UBC Faculty of Dentistry to Anaham Reserve in July to offer residents three days of free dental services. He also plans to have a library up and running in Nemiah Valley by year's end. “I'm always totally astounded by the acceptance and appreciation in these First Nations communities – it makes it all worthwhile,” said Blacker.

Roger William is king of the Mountain Race Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor There is no mountain racer more seasoned or decorated than Xeni Gwet’in Chief Roger William. He has been around since the first even mountain race was founded by his people 34 years ago at the Nemiah Rodeo in 1979. The mountain race has long been part of the tradition of the six tribes of the Chilcotin Nation and Nemiah is one of only three rodeos around the world to showcase the event (Redstone Rodeo and Williams Lake Stampede the other two). The Nemiah Rodeo has been a mainstay in the valley every August long weekend for the past 63 years. Its history is rooted in the ancient and enduring practice of wild horse wrangling and pays homage to those that came before him. William still remembers well, the days of his childhood growing up in the valley when during rough winters, band members would be forced to free their horses as they conserved hay for their cattle. In the spring, they would chase the horses back. “Nemiah Mountain Race was set up to have our wild horse chasers show of their skills once a years in a two day mountain race. Wild Qayus (Mustang) horses would go down the side of mountains, open flats, trails, mud, creek

William, with more than 20 mountain race wins under his belt, believes for the people of the Chilcotin, the mountain race is more important than ever. It represents a sinister stand to uphold tradition against the growing threat to Chilcotin

culture. The Xeni Gwet'in are embroiled in a bitter dispute with Taseko Mine Ltd. over the New Prosperity Mine which threatens to alter a huge piece of their land. As William, one of five competitors, eases his horse to the starting line at the top of Nemiah Mountain (Gweqez Dzelh in
Chilcotin, meaning Weather Mountain), pure adrenaline takes over. It takes riders about 20 minutes to reach the start and on average, 90 seconds to get down the trail. The event sees riders darting down a steep mountainside over rocks and gravel, through creeks and beaver dams, around sharp

corners all while being blinded by clouds of dirt and dust. The minuteand-a-half is enough to see riders emerge from Nemiah Creek dripping wet while some become stalled in the water and others crash off their horses. This was the case Saturday, in the first go of the mountain race as three of the five rid-
ers including Patrick McCloud, Conway Lulua and Shawn Billyboy were tossed from their horse into a beaver dam. The race winner was Douglas Hennigar aboard Bubba with William taking second. Needing a win on Sunday to add to his title collection, William, riding horse
Nilin, raced to victory. Lulua took second and Heningar placing third, leaving William first overall. A total of $3,500 was added to the entry fee for a total purse of $4,375. William raked in $1,968.75, with runner up Heningar bringing home $1,373.75, and McCloud in third earning $682.50.

Gillis closing in on funding target
Saturday, August 24, 2013
As of Monday, Williams Lake Golfer Mitch Gillis had raised over $9,000 or 73 percent of his goal of $12,500 to pay for his Q-school qualifying. Gillis has amassed 33 boosters and has 29 days left to collect the remaining $3,500 and looks like he is well on his way. Gillis lauched a fundraising website called Rallyme, which people can support him by donating money to help pay his greens fees, caddy, rental car, fuel, hotel, and food for the three stages of PGA qualifying school. The website is www.rallyme.com/rallies/151 2012 proved to be a difficult year for Gillis as he was the final year of sponsorship support and an injury in December kept him from playing the first half of 2013. “2012 was a dif-

Jolee Campbell Hi, my name is Jolee Campbell and a member of the Canim Valley 4-H Club. This year I have a ewe with lamb at foot and the lamb is my market project. My ewe, Rosiitta is a Cheviot cross breed and she had her lamb on March 15th, 2013. I named the lamb, Taazziee, who is now five months old. Taazziee has spots on his face and legs and his breed is Cheviot cross with a Suffolk. This was my first experience raising a female project and it was an exciting time when the ewe’s from our club where ready to
give birth to their lambs. We learned a lot from the internet and sheep breeders in the area on lambing. I want to thank the community for supporting the 4-H Clubs and wish all the 4-H clubs and members a good time at show and sale.
Kalei Dixon Hi my name is Kalei Dixon and this is my 9th year in 4H. This year I am the President of the Canim Valley 4H club. This year We were in the Aboriginal day parade. Gillis, an Oregon Sate graduate, is looking for a breakthrough season in 2013 and is counting on his fans and supporters to help get him onto the PGA Tour. “I am now back to health and am hungrier than ever. My work ethic is at its peak and my team and I have established our plan for success,” said Gillis. Stage one of Q-School is scheduled in Texas in mid October, with stage two in November at a location to be determined, and the final stage in late November in La Quinta, California.

Courtney Rankin I’m in the Springhouse 4-H Club and this year would be my seventh year in 4-H. I’ve had a swine project for seven years and my swine, this year, is named Nessie. Nessie is a Landrace Yorkshire cross. Right at the time I got her she loved being scratched and would roll over almost instantly. I’m sure enjoying the experience and commitment to raising a pig in 4-H this year. I hope I’ll see you at Show and Sale week, which starts Friday,
August 16th and goes to the 21st. Please come out and see what our club has to offer! Also, if you want to find me, I’ll be in the swine section of the Springhouse 4-H Club.
Ian Doherty Hi my name is Ian Doherty, I am with the Miocene Rose Lake 4-H Club. This year I have another market lamb named Shaggy. Shaggy is a big lamb and very stubborn on the lead. He is growing well and I hope he does well at Show and Sale. I am also doing a ewe lamb, her name is Beth. Beth is a good size Suffolk ewe lamb. Beth is good on the lead, she loves her grain. Shaggy and Beth spend their day grazing out in a large pasture
and get lots of exercise. Stop by and visit Shaggy and Beth at the Rose Lake Miocene pens at Show Sale.
Emily Lachance Howdy! My name is Moe and I’m a Black Angus steer. My owner, Emily Lachance, is part of the Rose Lake Miocene 4-H club. This year has been kind of a rough go for us. I ended up getting a urinary blockage and had to have surgery. This was at the end of March though so everything is well out of my system! I’m and awesome steer. I love to sit on rocks and hangout. I’m the only project Emily is doing this year. She has been in 4-H for 9 years now! That’s a long
time. We want to invite you all to the 55thAnnual District 4-H Show and Sale which is from august 16th to the 21st at the Williams lake stockyards. Emily and my lot number is 129! I hope we see you all there!
Garrett Best I am a Senior member and the President of the Horsefly 4-H Club. This year I have a Steer named the Notorious C.O.W. I have been in 4-H for 5 years and I really enjoy show and sale each year! I have learned many things from my 4-H experience such as public speaking, bookkeeping, farm management and Showmanship. I would love for everyone to come and check out the animals and the kids who put a lot of time and effort
into their 4-H projects. Please join us on August 17th-21st at the Williams Lake Stock Yards for our Annual 4-H Show and Sale!
Georgia diMarco Pepper, a white lamb with a light tan splotch on his nose and at the bottom of his right leg, is a Dorper, Dorset and American Black Belly hair sheep. Pepper was born on March 19th, 2013. He has a twin sister named Tinkerbelle. I found Pepper, Tinkerbelle and their mother ‘B’ in our barn hallway about 5 minutes after their birth. They looked so cute, but at the same time very wet and sticky. My name is Georgia DiMarco from the Big Lake 4-H Club. This is my second year in 4-H as a junior member, but I was a Clover Bud for 2 years before. I am 10 years old and I am very dedicated to 4-H. Along with Pepper I have Misty a gray Mini Lop show rab-
bit. This is my second year in 4- H with him. Pepper is my market lamb, and I feel that he will make a tasty meal for someone someday. I named Pepper “Pepper” because the name popped into my head the first time I saw him. So why shouldn’t next year’s lamb be named “Salt”? It seems to make as much sense as calling my white lamb Pepper. All I have to do is hope he is black!

The finishing touches are being put on the ice at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation complex in preparation for several upcoming hockey camps. Local teacher Mike Wilson will be lacing up his skates as instructor for two of these camps: Rookie Hockey (5-9 years) and Sharpen Your Hockey Skills (813 years). “Mike has been teaching these camps for over five years,” says Suzanne Cochrane, Recreation Programmer. “The kids
love him because he’s all about sportsmanship, teamwork and hockey cards.” The Rookie Hockey program teaches the fundamentals of hockey, it’s for those kids that are new to the sport or have had some experience on the ice. Sharpen Your Hockey Skills is for kids that have both minor hockey and backyard rink experience. Taseko rejects private hearing request Taseko Mines Ltd. rejected the request from the Xeni Gwet’in for a private hearing with federal regulators about how the proposed site of the New Prosperity mine will affect ancestral graves. The request was made to the federal review panel on August 2, and Taseko claims it was inappropriately submitted and should have been filed earlier. "There is no legitimate excuse to have failed to file the report in a timely fashion or, at a minimum, to have provided timely notice of the request to the panel, the proponent and the other interested parties," writes Taseko representative Karl Gustafson. The Xeni Gwet’in fears that the burial sites could be desecrated if their locations are made public. The First Nation band was asking that only Tsilhqot’in members and Taseko officials who have signed a confidentiality agreement be allowed to attend the presentation. On Thursday, the First Nations presented to the panel their report titled "The Identification of Ancestral Tsilhqot'in Graves within the Vicinity of the Proposed New Prosperity Mine." The Xeni Gwet'in say the graves are at risk for "vandalism, desecration and disrespect" if people know where they are. Gustafson claims that Taseko has been more than accommodating to the First Nations throughout the proceedings. "Taseko has made significant concessions during the course of the hearing to accommodate the interests of the panel and of all interested parties," Gustafson writes. "However, Taseko has organized its presentations and made arrangements with its consultants based on the hearing structure and procedures laid out by the panel and we submit it is unfair and prejudicial to ignore all that for no legitimate reason."

Adriane Kennedy Hello, my name is Adriane Kennedy and I’m from the Chimney Lake 4-H club! I Love animals, especially pigs, so I’m ecstatic to be able to join in on the 4-H fun this year!! Last year and the year before, I had the opportunity to raise my very own market pig! It was the most fun I’d ever had. This year I’m doing a market swine yet again. Her name is Mrs. Piggle, and she is just a bundle of fun! I purchased her on April 15. When I got her she weighed 85 pounds, and has successfully grown to 140 pounds to date! I am hoping that she is going to weigh 250 to 280 pounds on sale
day. She has a long, slender body, and bulging hams, everything you’re looking for in an ideal market pig. Last year I did reasonably well with my pig and this year I’d like to do even better!! So, I invite you to the 55th Annual 4-H Show and Sale on August 16 to the 22! See you soon!!!
Alexia Colton I am a senior member of the Rose Lake Miocene 4-H Club. I have been in 4-H for 9 years. This year I am raising a market steer, his name is Dragon, and he is a purebred Speckle Park. Did you know that only 4 people have raised a Speckle Park in our district? Dragon is my fourth market steer. He is quite shy with new people but once he knows you he will be your best friend. I am also raising a Speckle Park heifer this year, her name is Pnina. She has been bred to a Speckle Park bull and will come back next year with a calf. She is a complete drama queen and must be the center of attention. Everyone will know when Pnina enters the show ring because she will be strutting her stuff and showing off as usual. She is a very brave little girl and is also very curious when it comes to new things.
My third project is named Chilko. He is an Australian Shepherd cross. He was my 4-H project six years ago as a puppy in 2008. Chilko has a beautiful golden, black, and white coat. He is a little bundle of energy that never stops, much like the energizer bunny. I will be showing Chilko on August 17, Pnina on August 18, and Dragon on August 19 down at the Williams Lake Stockyards for the 55th Annual 4-H Show and Sale. The event starts on August 17 and finishes with the sale on August 22. I hope to see everyone there.
Allan Stafford Hi my name is Allan Stafford. This is my sixth year in 4-H and in the Chimney Valley 4-H club. This year I am doing gardening planter boxes. They are in the form of wheelbarrows made from barn boards and they look really neat. This year in 4-H has been fun and exciting. We start the year with our first monthly meeting, when we hold our club elections. I am the club treasurer. This year I did a speech on Spina Bifida. I placed second at club and third at district
level. I am really excited for this year’s Show and Sale, held August 16-21. If you have any questions about me or my project, please come and see me at the Chimney Valley 4-H gardening section. Hope to see you there.
Antonia Westwick My name is Antonia Westwick and this is my dog Jake. This is my first year in Dog with the Rose Lake/ Miocene 4H club. Jake and I have been practicing obedience and agility all spring and summer. I got Jake a year ago, and since then we have learned a lot about being partners. I am really excited about Show and Sale this year, because this is my
first year I get to do a project. I hope everyone comes to the stockyards to watch us.
Ashley Howell Hi, My Name is Ashley Howell. I belong to the Chimney Valley 4-H Club. I am a Junior Member. I am 13 years old This is my 3rd year in 4-H. My project this year is a Market Hog. I named her Roota , as she loves to root around in the mud and dirt ! I hope you can come to The 55th Annual 4-H Show and Sale, August
16th- 24th and see my Pig Roota.

Summertime is the perfect time for salads How are you doing with your summertime cooking? Lots of fresh produce at the grocery market these days or from the garden and so some folks are doing a lot of canning...tomatoes then fruit. I have fruit with cereal for breakfast most mornings and sometimes in the winter when the fresh stuff is not handy it sure is nice to be able to open a jar of peaches when needed, not only to start the day but to have with lunch or dinner. I grew up eating canned everything. Both of my grandmas
were big into canning and can remember the nice kitchen smells when that process was underway. We even had canned deer & moose along with lots of different wild berries that tasted pretty darn nice in the middle of a prairie winter. These wild fruits also yielded up some
might fine jams and jelly Along with the canning, summertime offers so many good fresh foods, almost right out of the garden. Salads can be so tasty at this time, with the choice of just about anything you want to create a side dish or an entree. Is there any family who has not enjoyed a summertime potato salad...it would be interested to see how far back in culinary history we could go to when the first potato salad hit the plates. I suspect it would be some time ago. Did you have potato salad as a kid and
does it still grace your plate when the spuds are fresh out of the ground? I realize there are many different recipes for potato salad...so enjoy one today
Summertime Potato Salad 4 cups cubed potatoes, cooked, drained and cooled ½ cup chopped celery, ½ cup chopped red onion and 1 tbsp of chives 3 hard cooked eggs, chopped 1 Tbsp chives 2 Tbsp chopped sweet pickle ½ cup of mayonnaise ½ tsp mustard
Salt and Pepper to taste Combine all ingredients and stir to combine. Refrigerate until serving time...this recipe should serve 4 people. Hope you have a good summertime weekend... Bye for now and Gooood Cooking

Save some of your good fortune for others, Leo. When you share the wealth, not only will you feel better about yourself, but also you will certainly have more friends around you. Without you the well-oiled wheels of the work machine just won’t spin correctly, Virgo. That can put a lot of pressure on you in your career, so weigh the options of a day off.
Libra, sometimes you have to be the voice of reason, and this won’t always make you popular with others. Though some may not rally around you this week, they’ll relent. Something that seemed like a good idea at first glance may not seem like the best thing to do right now, Scorpio. Switch gears while you can still take another path.
Sagittarius, although you may rather spend your time doing something else for the next few days, handle your upcoming obligations without complaint.
Surround yourself with close friends, Capricorn. They will serve as your anchor in difficult situations that may come to pass this week. It’s good to have a support system. There is more to you than others see, Aquarius. Sometimes you relish in being mysterious, and this is one of those times. Others’ interest will be piqued. Don’t take any sniffles or sneezes for granted, Pisces. Make sure this week you pay attention to your health to ensure good days ahead.
