Fagg back in trouble with law A 24-year-old Williams Lake man is back in trouble with the law. Robert Fagg, who trolled the popular dating website PlentyofFish for his victims has had seven new counts added to existing assault and forcibleconfinement charges he already faced. The commercial truck driver was arrested in Quesnel on Monday, July 22 and charged with break and enter, forcible confinement, two counts of sexual assault and three counts of assault. The offences allegedly took place between 2007 and 2012 and involved women who were in relationships with the accused, according to police. Previously, Fagg had been
charged with assault, uttering threats, forcible confinement, breach of an undertaking and recognizance in relation to an incident on April 8 when he held a 26-year-old woman against her will as he drove his commercial truck from Williams Lake to Kitimat. The woman texted a friend who notified RCMP. Using the cellphone pings to determine the whereabouts of the vehicle, Smithers RCMP were able to pull over the truck near Burns Lake. The victim claimed that Fagg had become violent and had prevented her from going to work for a week and would not let her go. According to the RCMP, he allegedly threatened to kill her if she called police. RCMP say they were familiar
with the truck driver and since then, three more female victims have come forward. While appearing in court for that case, Fagg was also charged with assault, forcible confinement and uttering threats against another woman for incidents that allegedly happened in Williams Lake between Dec. 1, 2012, and Jan. 1, 2013. Fagg allegedly met women through PlentyofFish, said the RCMP. In the case of one forcible confinement charge, Fagg allegedly held a woman hostage in a residence and his truck for six months. Fagg was scheduled to appear in court last Thursday in Williams Lake.

Mountview Store victim of smash-and-grab On Friday, July 26 at about 10:00 a.m. a female was sitting at a picnic bench in the Kiwanis Park between the tennis courts and the children's play park. A Caucasian male with short blond hair wearing a white hat and purple tank top approached her and asked for a cigarette. When the lady put her purse down to give him a cigarette the male grabbed the purse and ran off in the direction of Boitanio Park. The Williams Lake RCMP are asking anyone who may have seen the incident to please contact the Williams Lake RCMP at 250-3926211. On Thursday, July 25 at 4:05 a.m. Williams Lake RCMP responded to a break and enter at the Mountview Sore located at 1124 Dog Creek Road. A primary purpose of the program is to assist in improving the physical appearance and / or functionality of commercial buildings for the betterment of business viability and service to the public. “Downtown revitalization is an important goal area of the City’s Official Community Plan (OCP). The Cariboo Fire Centre (CFC) will be banning campfires in most of the CaribooChilcotin region, except the Quesnel and Horsefly/Likely Fire Zones, as of 12 noon on Thursday, Aug. 1. This prohibition will also apply to open fires of any size, industrial or backyard burning, fireworks, tiki torches,
sky laterns and burning barrels. This step is being taken to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect the public. The fire danger rating is currently high throughout the CFC, with scattered areas of extreme. As of Tuesday morning (July 30), there have been a total of 74
wildfires in the CFC this season, with 58 of those person-caused. An official Wildfire Management Branch Information Bulletin will be released later this afternoon. A map of the campfire ban boundaries will also be released. I will be available to answer questions about the ban on Wednesday, July 31.

Anaham Band hosts UBC Faculty of Dentistry mission Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor Tl'etinqoxt'in Health Centre (Anaham Band) hosted a team of 24 from the UBC Faculty of Dentistry who were on a Dental Mission. The team included dentists, instructors, students, staff and Rotary volunteers offering free dental work to all First Nations and non-First Nations living in Tsilqot'in communities. The three day mission ran Friday through Sunday, treating around 100 patients, and was a huge success. "Rotary is so excited by this opportunity and to be a part of bringing health services to the region and working with the Tl'etinqox-t'in community,” said ShirleyPat Chamberlain, Past President of Rotary Club of Williams Lake. Most of the patients were from Anaham Band along with some from neighboring Stone, Redstone and Toosey Bands. The mission is helping to alleviate some of the painful memories and negative stigmas many of the older First Nations have towards dentistry from the residential school days. “We are helping to rebuild peoples ideas towards dentistry. Many of the older First Nations who attended residential schools underwent painful extractions and have bad memories,” said Chamberlain. “This is the first time in 20-30 years they've seen a dentist and they are leaving here happy and pain free.” The symbiotic relationship helps both Chilcotin residents and the dental students. The dental students receive some valuable hands-on experience and mentorship and the people receive free dental work. The team features first year through fourth year dental students and the first and second year students do the sterilizations and then observe while the third and fourth year students do the actual dental work. There were also local dentists including Dr. Christine Constable to help mentor the students.

UBC dental students work on patient during a dental mission at Anaham Reserve. “They (Tl'etinqoxt'in) have been gracious hosts. They have been feeding us and treating us to community and cultural events every day,” said Chamberlain. “We went to Farwell Canyon and saw a fisherman pull two spring salmon out of the river. They also showed us old pictographs and where they collect sage to make medicine.” This is the second Dental Mission for UBC as they started the pilot project in July 2010 hosted by the Penelakut First Nation on Kuper Island, east of Chemainus, B.C. Anaham Chief, Joe Alphonse, signed an agreement this year with the UBC Dean
of Dentistry, Charles Shuler, to be their hosts. The idea of these missions was started by Bob Blacker, Rotary Club Governor and Lt-Gov. Steven Point who specialize in literary projects in remote and underserved B.C. communities. They helped put the blue Rotary libraries in both Stone and Toosey.
Chamberlain, who is also the TRU-WL Grants Officer, is hoping the relationship with UBC can spark some interest among local students who can start their pre-dental studies here in Williams Lake and save almost $10,000 compared to tuition costs in the Lower Mainland.

Soccer in Canada falling way behind Nearly 3 million people play soccer in Canada and it is easily the most popular sport in terms of participation rate, even blowing away hockey. However, when it comes to producing talent and results on the world stage, our men’s national team has failed to deliver. Canada’s only World Cup appearance came in Mexico in 1986. I had the privilege of having Canada’s captain of that team, Bruce Wilson, as my coach at the University of Victoria. Needless to say, he taught me a thing or two about defending. Our Canadian men’s national team recently dropped to 88th in the FIFA World Rankings and are only the 10th ranked team in CONCACAF (North America). Canada is coming off a disappointing Gold Cup performance in which they finished with two losses and a draw and failed to advance from the group stage. This included a humiliating 1-0 loss to Martinique, a Caribbean island of 400,000 which is an overseas territory of France. I travelled down to see Canada play Mexico in Seattle, a game that offered little excitement ending in a 2-0 loss. Around 30,000 people attended the game and probably 29,500 were Mexican and the other 500 were us Canadians, all crammed in one corner of the end zone. One might think having the game two hours from our bor-
der we would see a few more Canadian fans. It’s amazing how much things can change in a year. Last September Canada defeated Panama 1-0 in World Cup qualifying in Toronto and sat first in their group and looked primed to advance to the next round. The same Panamanian team made it all the way to the final of the Gold Cup on Sunday losing 1-0 to the United States. After the Toronto game, Canada had some lousy results but still held their own destiny, needing just a draw with Honduras last October to advance. Before a hostile capacity crowd of about 40,000, the Canadians, playing their most important match in more than a decade, were humiliated 8-1 leading to the resignation of Coach Stephen Hart. Canada is a member of the G8, a forum for the governments of the eight largest national economies in the world that includes France, Germany, Italy, England, Japan, Russia and the United States. The Fifa Rankings for these other seven G8 nations are Germany (2), Italy (6), England (15), Russia (17), USA (22), France (23) and Japan (37). 51 rankings spots separate Canada from Japan, the next closest nation. Despite the poor results on the national stage, Canada has never been stronger at the professional club level of soccer, now featuring three MLS
teams in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, with a fourth in Ottawa soon to come. Both Montreal and Vancouver are having their best seasons ever. Montreal Impact has a 10-5-5 win-draw-loss record and sits one point out of first place in the Eastern Conference with 35 points. Vancouver is 9-7-5 in the tough Western Conference with 32 points. Toronto FC, now in their seventh season, look like they will fail again to make their first playoff appearance as they sit near the bottom of the Eastern tables. The Vancouver Whitecaps are having their best season to date in 2013, their third year in Major League Soccer. B.C. Place has been a fortress for the Caps’ as it wasn’t until Saturday’s 1-0 loss to the Philadelphia Union that they tasted defeat on their home turf. Coming into Saturday's game, they were 7-0-3 in MLS games at B.C. Place, and 8-0-4 including the Canadian championship. Much of the blame for the loss falls on the shoulders of Caps’ player Jun Marques Davidson who was ejected after mindlessly headbutting a Philadelphia player in the eighth minute. This left Vancouver to play the remaining 82 minutes with 10 men. It looked as if their unbeaten run would continue until the 85th minute when Union player Antoine Hoppenot scored to give the visitors a 1-0 win.

It appears we are on the cusp of a revolution as advances in medicine and biotechnology will radically increase our life spans. Centenarians are expected to increase 18 fold by 2050. The percentage of our fellow Americans 100 and older, is projected to rise to 601,000 by that date. One other interesting fact; Depends now outsell Pampers and have begun to dominate the
lucrative diaper market. Although Japan is leading the way with the highest per capita rates of 100-yearolds, apparently Saskatchewan is high on the list. Why ?

getting a little long in the tooth, I’m seriously considering starting a new web site myself entitled; “Geezers Without Borders.” Helpful hints on how to geeze through life. For starters, we geezers need; door knobs that are geezer proof, geezer friendly digital cameras and creamers. Simple one page manuals that save you from hitting at something with a hammer because it doesn’t work. Gizmos for geezers which is a little devise that tells you who you are, where you are, what time it is
and when to take your meds. And another thing, why can't someone invent a pair of glasses embedded with a computer chip that sends out a GPS signal to my iPhone with directions to where I left them. How to spot a geezer? Their favorite room in the house is the bathroom because they have to pee every hour on the hour. They leave the tap running, the fridge door open, can’t find the mute button on the TV control, never turn off the lights and regularly drop their
hearing aids into toilet bowls. And they easily exhaust themselves just getting into their pajamas. One obvious clue, by the time they find a parking spot at the mall, they forget what they came to buy, bought something they already have and then can’t remember where they parked. Unkind? Well that’s happened to me. “Hello, welcome to Walmart”, is known as , geezers greeting geezers. Some of the indications that Canada is becoming a Geezer Nation are that Harley Davidson sales to six-
ty-five year olds now outpaces those to young whipper snappers under thirty and the next Porche convertible you see barreling down the road will most likely have a grey haired driver behind the wheel. Retirement is no longer seen as a time to slow down, relax and put an end to having to work, but rather it can be seen as a fresh start that offers a chance to travel, volunteer for a worthy cause or an opportunity to embark on an exciting new adventure.

Let science determine the fate of the mine Nick Christiansen from 100 Mile, told the Environmental hearing into the New Prosperity Mine that some of the stuff he has been hearing is spin doctor stuff, that’s hogwash, let’s base the decision of this mine, on science. Like other speakers who have talked about the necessity for jobs in the Cariboo Chilcotin, Christiansen who lived in the Chilcotin with many First Nations said he was tired of hearing about the Chilcotin Indian War, because it has nothing to do with the hearings. He also refuted statements made at the hearing that Fish Lake is one of the top ten fishing lakes in this province. He then showed a slide of a large rainbow caught in the tailing ponds at Gibralter Mine. The South Cariboo resident said his way of life is threatened because of lack of jobs in this area. He said this mine is mostly for his kids and grand kids so they can live and grow up in the Cariboo Chilcotin. He also mentioned that his system works only if you have taxpayers.

Christiansen stated he has known Ervin Charleyboy, former Chief, for 40 years and it now makes him sick the way he is being treated by members of his community...what is happening to Ervin is not right. Charleyboy told the hearing that many in his community wont talk to him or even bother to phone him since he has supported the mine. The 100 Mile businessman and 108 airport manger said Taskeo will do good for this area with jobs and he is not going to quit supporting the mine until this gets a resolution. He said he is a proud Canadian. There has been big support for the New Prosperity Mine from the South Cariboo, and they have said that
even if 100 Mile would be the smallest beneficiary from this mine, in terms of communities such as Williams Lake and Quesnel, it is economic development that this region sorely needs. Len Doucette, the business development director for the 100 Mile Chamber said there are have signed over 1000 members of the ‘yes to prosperity’ campaign. Leon Chretin, also with the Chamber told the Environmental hearing that he is from the Woods Cree Nation in the Prairies and his culture is Native, French, and Spanish. Chretin said, for some their spiritual culture was destroyed when they stopped saying the Lords Prayer in school. Jason Ryll President of the Williams Lake Chamber of Commerce told the Panel that we have some of the most stringent regulations around mining in this country. It’s my opinion that Taseko has been held unfairly under the microscope, not because of environmental concerns but of cultural, and that is not the mandate of this panel. Ryll stated
that the standards and expectations this company has had to endure are unlike any other major mining project in recent history. The Chamber President urged the panel to consider the message that would be sent to other potential investors in our province if this mine is turned down...I fear that message would be that B.C. is not open for business and that in turn would be devastating to our entire provincial economy, no matter where you live. Dr John Meech from UBC, representing the Chamber of Commerce in Williams Lake, was asked by Chief Roger Williams about a comment he made during his presentation regarding poor conditions in some First Nations Reservations in this country. Meech said he has travelled to many First Nations communities in Canada and has seen conditions worse than some of the third world countries he has visited. Joan Juyek representing the TNG stated the company (Taseko) is not telling us the truth about the economic impacts. She
said that to permit this mine to go ahead will have serious political repercussions and that New Prosperity would worsen social and economic problems for the vulnerable population in the area. opments, watering days are determined by bay numbers or unit numbers. Properties that have automatic sprinkler systems can water grass between 12 and 4 a.m. The sprinkling
regulations are in effect until September 30. The regulations are to ensure there is enough water supply during peak daytime hours, and non-compliance can carry a $100 fine. The City’s bylaw enforcement department will enforce the regulations. The community’s cooperation is appreciated.

Spend an afternoon in historic Alexandria
I thought that a lazy Sunday would be the perfect opportunity to explore Alexandria and try the Fort Alexandria Cafe. Alexandria is located 45 minutes
north of Williams Lake on Highway 97 along the Fraser River. It is famous for being the end of the Cariboo Wagon Road. I’ve drove past the

cafe hundreds of times but finally decided to try it out. It really doesn’t look like much from the outside but it’s much more interesting on the inside. The cafe is filled with a collection of oddities and collectibles that catch your eye including neat wood carvings of animals, an antique wood stove, and a mish mash of old tables and chairs. The cafe is in seasonal operation (Spring through Fall) and features a national historical site marker next to the building. It has dozens of flavours of ice cream and a wide variety of home-cooked food. The owners of the cafe currently have it for sale along with their 30
acre spread. They have a steady clientele of locals and truckers, many who have been coming to the cafe for years to get their quota of greasy goodness for the day. The elementary school has long been shutdown but the building still stands along with an old bee-hive burner nearby. These historic landmarks and gorgeous scenery as you wind your way down to the banks of Fraser River make great backdrops for photos. About five minutes down the road is the Cariboo Wood Shop which sells fudge and all kinds of hand-made goods. Those looking to take the family for an afternoon swim can do
so in nearby McLeese Lake . Alexandria makes a great day trip for the family. Stop in for lunch at the Fort Alexandria Cafe, go exploring the old school and beehive burner, check out the Cariboo Wood Shop and finish off with a swim and sun tan at McLeese Lake. Short History of Alexandria The fort is named in honour of explorer Alexander Mackenzie who first reached the shores of the First Nations village on June 21, 1793. In 1821, the North West Company erected a fort at Alexandria, the same year the company merged with
the Hudson's Bay Company. By 1859, in response to the Cariboo Gold Rush, Alexandria had grown from a simple post to a large tent community of miners. The Cariboo Wagon Road along the Fraser Canyon route was 359 miles and took 37 days in an era when travel by land was much more tedious than by boat. A second route was planned to Alexandria in 1863 by Alfred Waddington shortening the trip to 22 days and only 185 miles with miners traveling by steamboat to the mouth of Bute Inlet then overland along the Homathko River Valley and linking up with the wagon road in Alexandria. However, this road
would never be built and its plans would be the harbinger of tragedy. In the spring of 1864, when members of the Tsilhqot'in First Nations learned of plans to build the road they feared both infringement on their territory and the increased threat of smallpox. A group of men led by Klatsassine attacked one of Waddington's work camps, killing 14 in what is known as Bute Inlet Massacre. That summmer, Chief Alexis, Klatsassine and his men met with Gold Commissioner William Cox in Alexandria under the assurances of friendship. Klatsassine and his men were found guilty of murder in September 1864 at Quesnel by Judge Begbie and sentenced to hang.

Fort Alexandria is a famous Canadian historical site and despite it's small size it played a huge role in the history of the Cariboo. The town was the last stop on the Cariboo Wagon Road during the Gold Rush and also played a key role in the Chilcotin War.

Teacher by Day, Boxing Champ by Night Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor There are not many students who can claim that their teacher is an undefeated professional boxer. This is the case for those in Alisah McPhee’s Grade 4-5 class at Centennial Park Elementary in Abbotsford, B.C. McPhee, born and raised in Williams Lake, enjoys leading her so-called double life. By day, she stands in front of a blackboard delivering lesson plans to her pre-teens. By night, she’s in the boxing ring honing her skills under the fluorescent lights. Asked where she feels more comfortable
of the two, McPhee admits she would rather eat a right hook from an opponent than field questions from 30 of her pupils. “Teaching is like boxing in some respects, if your lesson plan isn’t going well or the fight isn’t going your way, sometimes you have to throw everything you have planned out the window and start over,” said McPhee. “Although I'm comfortable in the classroom and love teaching, the ring is definitely my zone.” Her students are some of her biggest supporters and she’s been known to give them a boxing lesson
or two during her P.E. class. “My students were so stoked when they found out about my boxing. They love to hear about my fights, see pictures and know everything about what I do,” said McPhee. Plenty of her students were on hand for her pro debut this past December at Fraserview Hall in Langley to watch their teacher give Jaime Ward a lesson on boxing. Comments like “Teach her her ABCs,” and “Teacher her how it’s done,” are thrown out by her supporters during a fight. “I’m a big promot-

er of Daily Physical Activity and I’ve brought my gloves and pads to the school and ran sort of a boxing boot camp for the students to give them an idea,” said McPhee. McPhee excelled at both soccer and rugby at Columneetza Secondary. In high school, she made the B.C. provincial soccer team before moving on to help the Capilano University (North Vancouver) Blues Women’s soccer team to consecutive CCAA National Championships in 2000 and 2001. “My soccer coaches like Rana (Grace) at Columneetza and Doug (Abercrombie) at Capilano really helped to instil a work ethic in me which has helped with my boxing,” explains McPhee. McPhee, 31, started boxing by chance back in 2009 when a friend introduced her to the sweet science. “I always wanted to try boxing - I originally went to the gym to watch but then I got training and four months later had my first amateur fights,” said McPhee. She trains twice daily out of the River City Boxing Club in Langley under coach Jamie Allison, whose dad Dave is in charge of promoting her bouts. McPhee went 5-0 as an amateur culminating in her win-

Since relinquishing her amateur status, she has won two professional fights including a defeat of Wendy Roy in her most recent bout on March 2, 2013 at the River Rock Casino in Richmond, B.C. McPhee will put her undefeated record on the line on September 21, 2013 when she fights American Liz McCarthy at the Silver
Reef Casino in Blaine, Washington. She is in talks with the casino about becoming one of the house fighters which means she would sign a contract to fight at the venue three times a year. With the recent introduction of women fighting in the UFC and high profile athletes such as Ronda Rousey, McPhee has considered making the switch to Mixed Martial Arts in the future, but for now her focus is boxing.

Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor Williams Lake's Sheldon Manchur continued his long distance running success earning a spot on the podium at the Kamloops Marathon on Sunday. Manchur placed third out of 50 participants in a time of 2:46:26. “All in all it was a fun race. I definitely gave it my all and had nothing left at the end,” said Manchur. Manchur completed the 26.2 (42 kilometer) mile marathon at an average speed of under four minutes per kilometer. The race started and finished at McArthur Island Park, with the route following along the Thompson River for a large part of it. “The Kamloops Marathon was a very nice race. The course

We were fortunate to have some nice cloud coverage as well which helped to keep the temperature down,” said Manchur. “The race went quite well for myself.” From the beginning Manchur settled into a pack of five other runners who ran together for the first half of the race. One runner took off very fast from the start and was far ahead of Manchur's pack after a few short miles. Before too long he was out of sight. In the last 13 miles the group Manchur was running with began to spread out. Despite sitting in fourth position and feeling very fatigued with just six mile to go, Manchur was able to dig deep to earn a top three finish. “I was in fourth with six miles to go and at this point and feeling quite fatigued. The lone leader must have pushed it too hard from the get go as the three of us overtook him in the final 4-6 miles. I was now in third place and stayed there for the final four miles,” said Manchur. “The last five or so miles saw me slowing down more than I would have liked as I began to run out of steam.” Manchur finished just over four minutes behind first place finisher Ryan Day with a winning time of 2:42:19. Manchur had plenty of family and friends on hand to help push him through the gruel-

He plans to take a small break to recover after the race. There won’t be much running, if any, for Manchur in the

The Williams Lake RCMP are looking for a few good women and men for employment in the cell block as guards. Blue Fins Hold Smoke on Water Event
The Williams Lake Blue Fin's held their fourth annual Smoke on the Water event Sunday at Chimney Lake. The open water swim event featured 15 participants. In the 750-meter distance there were three swimmers. Kasha Vitoratos finished in first place with a time of 19:56.08. In the 1500-meter distance there were four swimmers and Geneva Gordon was the first finisher with a time of 26:48.44. In the 3000-
meter distance there was eight swimmers with Veronica Reid finishing first with a time of 42:30.83 breaking the record she set last year by two minutes. The Blue Fin's would like to extend a big thanks to all who volunteered including Abbi Taylor for registrations and recording results, and Wayne Rich for laying and retrieving the buoys. Thanks also to everyone who kayaked and canoed the course to keep it a very safe event.

Come out for a Day or a WeekenD Stay! Music, music, music! We have had an amazing month full of musical entertainment. The 8th Annual Arts On The Fly Music Festival was on the 12th and 13th of July with performers coming from around the world. Fun was had by all who attended the festival. I was one as well who enjoyed all the entertainment and all the festivities. The weekend of the 20th I was not around as my son was getting married, but all went great at the ATV Rally Fundraiser for the Horsefly Fire Department they had 86 participants and the weather was amazing. Following that up the Anvil Pub had karaoke in the evening with lot of great singers participating! The pub will have a Horseshoe tourney and BBQ on the 3rd of August then they will have Oren Barter back with Open Mic on the 17th, so don’t miss out! On the next day the town wide garage sale and pie sale happened, which is always so much fun. Christina Mary from Little Horsefly Western Town B&B hosted an in house concert in the saloon with the band Dire Wolves. The band the Dire Wolves is an old time acoustic blues string band featuring a mandolin, guitar, harmonica, washboard and upright bass. There was 20 + guests that Christina Mary provided tea, coffee and goodies for as they listened and danced to the great tunes. Check

Barbecue Chicken to Spice up Summertime I cant believe it’s already the end of July...seems like summer just started. Of course one of the best parts about this time of the year is the fresh produce and fruits that are available in our supermarkets, farmers markets in town and right from our own gardens. I have a small garden and don’t have room for vegetables but I do grow quite a few different herbs. My oregano and thyme are blooming nice flowers that the hummingbirds enjoy and they are a pretty tasty addition to a summertime salad.
This week I was barbecuing a chicken and though it would be nice to use some herbs with this cooking process. I took some butter and mixed it with a variety of herbs, then coated the chicken on both sides with the mixture...it gave the chicken a nice taste. Barbecued Chicken
with Herb Butter… One three pound chicken cut in half down the middle One-half cup of butter Four cloves of garlic minced very fine. Tablespoon of fresh parsley Teaspoon of crushed fresh Rosemary Teaspoon of crushed fresh thyme. Mix all ingredients in the butter to form a paste. Cut the chicken in half and liberally use ground pepper and seasoned sea salt to cover both sides of the chicken that has been patted dry. Rub the buttered herb mixture over both side of the bird and put
