Happy New Year! Young woman backstops mens oldtimers hockey team BY JANA SEMENIUK When Bruderheim Comets Seniors hockey team needed a goalie to step in for their Dec. 17 game in Bruderheim, Jennifer Hauer, 23, was more than happy to help. “I’m originally from this area and I’ve been playing (hockey) since I was eight,” she said. “When they said they needed a goalie for tonight I was more

than willing to come.” Bruderheim town mayor and Comets team member, Karl Hauch, reached out to Hauer upon needing a goalie. “Jen’s father Kevin plays for our team so he put me in touch with her,” he said. “I remembered she played hockey and thought it would be great to have her come out.”

Karl Hauch, Jennifer Hauer, and Kevin Hauer pose outside the dressing rooms at the Karol Maschmeyer Arena in Bruderheim. On Dec. 17, Jennifer made history by becoming the first female goalie to play for the Bruderheim Comets in the North of 50 hockey league.

Hauch added that the team had to seek special permission from the president of the league to have Hauer step in. “Because it was on an emergency basis, and we are a senior men’s team, we had to get permission from the league president for Jen to be our goalie for the night,” he said. The Bruderheim Comets are a part of the North of 50 hockey league which is a recreational hockey league for senior men over the age of 50. It was formed earlier this year after being spearheaded by Hauch. “We actually didn’t have a men’s team in town for senior guys,” he said. “So, we thought it would be great to start one of our own.” The game on Dec. 17 ended with the Bruderheim Comets losing to the Old Sharks 11-10. “It was a hard-fought defensive battle,” laughed Hauch. “Jen did a great job as goalie!” In addition, the Hauer father and daughter team had a night of playing hockey together. “I wanted to play as a kid because my two sisters and brother were doing it,” said Hauer. Her father, Kevin, remembers her early years of playing hockey.

“I had her in figure skating for two years when she was little but she always begged to play hockey. As a kid she was so scrawny and runty I thought she would get killed out there,” he said. “But how could I say no when I let her two older sisters play?” Hauer started playing hockey on a boy’s team in Lamont when she was eight, quickly moving into the goalie position. “Halfway through her first season, she played in net,” said Kevin. “The coaches asked me if she could just stay in goal and she has been there ever since.” Currently, Hauer is a member of the Direwolves hockey team which plays with the Capital City Recreation H o c k e y L e a g u e (CCRHL) in Edmonton as well as helping out other teams when they are short of players.
