‘Full Send’ weekend of racing at Area 53
Leslie Cholowsky Editor
“Full Send” in racing means 100 per cent committment and enthusiasm, even if you fail. It was the late Steven Chapman’s philosophy on racing, and on life, and this weekend Area 53 racers and fans in Forestburg honoured his memory in a ‘Full Send’ weekend on the eighth-mile track running Saturday and Sunday. Saturday saw around 80 racers hit the
tracks, for the eighth-mile bracket races in three different categories: sportsman, semi-pro, and pro, with some junior dragsters and others thrown in for entertainment. In bracket racing, each car has a specific time it’s dialed into. The goal for each race is to run as close to that time as possible, without going faster. If you go faster, you “break out” and you lose. If you leave the start line before the light hits green, you lose, no matter who crosses the finish line first or what time
they have. The annual Steven Chapman memorial brings plenty of prizes for the racers, with sponsors of all kinds, and this race also saw race families honour all the track volunteers with a giant pot luck supper on Saturday evening. Saturday’s special feature, right at dusk, was Ryan McQueen and his Insanity Jet Car. Self-taught, and following his passion and dreams, McQueen built this unique two-engine jet car with a Ferrari body, and travels across the
province in the summer to show it off. Fans on Saturday also got to see the committment of Area 53 volunteers when a racer’s engine gave up the ghost, trailing a whole lot of oil onto the track. Volunteers dropped everything, grabbed brooms, mops, and like a welloiled machine, had the track cleaned off and ready to go in no time at all. The stands were also full both days, as visitors enjoyed a whole lot of different kinds of vehicles out on the tracks and perfect weather.

Hardisty Library receives grant to purchase printers The Battle River Community Foundation recently awarded a $2,000 grant to the Hardisty Library Board. The Hardisty Library Board received funds from the Foundation to purchase two printer-scanners, replacing the old malfunctioning equipment. Patrons of the Library from students to seniors regularly use the service. The grant to the Hardisty Library Board was funded from income earned by the Doreen and Irving Bell Fund, Dale and Shelley Drever Fund, Dick and Annie Drever Fund, Doug and Helen Drever Fund, and the Ian Harrison Memorial Fund. These types of funds allow the Foun-
dation Board to match annual grant applicants with the interests’ donors wish to support. The Battle River Community Foundation exists to support organizations in east central Alberta that benefit the local communities and positively impact the future. Grants from the Battle River Community Foundation are primarily made possible through the generosity of individual donors and organizations that have created endowment funds. The principal of these endowment funds is kept intact, and the income is made available annually to support local projects and organizations.
Battle River Community Foundation Director Henry Hays, presents the cheque to Christine Ruzicka-Drager, Board Chair, and Kelly Barker, Librarian and Manager.

Daysland celebrates opening of waste water plant Leslie Cholowsky Editor
Just four years after the Town of Daysland received $3.2 million from the Province of Alberta for work on the lift station and forcemain upgrade project, a celebration of the project’s completion was held Friday, Sept. 6. The Town’s Deputy Mayor Butch Robertson, CAO Jody Quickstad, former CAO Rod Krips, Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely, representatives from Banner Environmental Engineering, Fortis, and Nu-Edge Construction were all on hand to celebrate the completion of a project that has been on Daysland’s priority list since 2013 and before. Grant approval for the project came during the pandemic, when the Province announced that it would approve “shovel-ready” projects. Daysland had been turned down for funding, and had “retooled” its application, trying to eliminate unnecessary costs. With the help of James Marr, President and Chief Engineer with Banner Environmental Engineering Consultants, the town’s application was approved; one of 54 projects funded by the Province in 2020. The total project cost was $4,254,840, leaving the town to take out a debenture to cover the difference between the grant funding and the project cost. Over the past decade, Daysland has updated a lot of its critical infrastructure, including a new potable water plant and reservoir, and sanitary sewer collection system upgrade and repair that included approximately 3,000 m of sewer piping work. Marr, back in 2020, called the proposed work on the lift station, “Critical, especially given the age of the system, (40+ years) and the fact that both components have been repaired using stopgap measures over the past eight years.” Marr also noted that prior to receiving grant funding, the system had experienced two major failures, causing flooding in some basements. Deputy Mayor Butch Robertson said that a heavy rainfall would often require help from vac trucks round the clock in some instances, to alleviate the pressure on the aging system. Marr says, “Banner’s working experience with the Town of Daysland dates to 2006. We observed how the Town worked carefully with the Province and strategically planned upgrades to critical infrastructure, including the most recent wastewater system upgrades. “Over the past ~18 years, the Town has upgraded much of its wastewater, potable water, fire protection and stormwater drainage systems. “The town’s planning efforts, creative and innovative approaches, and their tenacious focus to stay on plan represents a modern day “operational boot-
Daysland celebrated the grand opening of its new lift station on Friday, Sept. 6. On hand to celebrate the project’s completed were, from left: Brett Scherger from Nu-Edge Construction, Dan Napper and James Marr from Banner Environmental Engineering Consultants, Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely, Daysland Public Works foreman Wade Lomheim, Daysland CAO Jody Quickstad, Daysland Deputy Mayor Butch Robertson, Joseph Manacsa, Engineering Lead at Banner Environmental Engineering Consultants, Ryan Donald from Fortis, Former Daysland CAO Rod Krips, and Kayla Law from Fortis. Friday’s event celebrated the close of a decade’s long struggle for the town’s lift station, and a path forward for growth. strap,”and has positioned the Town for long-term sustainability, opportunities for continued community lifestyle advancements, and added new growth and prosperity possibilities for the Town. “In the Daysland case, the Province of Alberta stand as co-leaders, and are highly deserving of gratitude and recognition for their sound and steadfast policies, mentorship and the generous financial contributions which made the execution of this work possible.” Marr went so far as to say, “None of this would have happened without the Province. In my opinion, we live in the best province in the world.” Deputy Mayor James (Butch) Robertson added his thanks to the Province on Friday, and to Marr and Banner Engineering, including James, Joe, and Daniel, and to Brett Scherger, from NuEdge as the project contractor. He also extended thanks to the Daysland Business Association for hosting the barbeque. “This is a huge step for Daysland, without this funding, we could have not done this project.” He then introduced Daysland’s former CAO Rod Krips, who put a lot of work into the project. Krips came to Daysland in 2014, and says the file was already going and had been for a number of years. He says the next eight years the town worked on it diligently, with the help of Marr and MLA Jackie Lovely, who helped push the project forward to Mu-
nicipal Affairs. “We brought the project forward and were turned down many times. Along comes COVID and things started to happen. The Province announced that in order to get the economy rolling, shovel-ready projects would be approved.” Krips says between James Marr and Banner Engineering, the application was made shovel as quickly as possible, and “fortunately was approved this time.” “Again, I can’t say enough about our MLA Jackie Lovely. She was on the Minister’s doorstep every week, and we really appreciate the work that you do for us, Jackie.” Krips added his thanks to the Province, for “their tremendous assistance, both Municipal Affairs and Transportation.” He says, “Banner Engineering was instrumental in getting this project through, with James Marr, the principal, and his associates, Joseph and Daniel, and Brent Hunter. We had a series of meetings just about every week via Zoom to get this thing underway. “When it went to tender, we had the fortune of having Nu-Edge Construction be the successful bidder.” He added his thanks to John Parker, Wayne Bowen, and Brett Scherger “for their tremendous work.” Fortis Alberta played a part in this project as well, says Krips, with rewiring and the three phase work, and he extended his thanks to Kayla Law and Ryan Donald from Fortis for their
efforts. He also extended his thanks to the Town Councils in Daysland for their “unwavering support on this project, to see it to conclusion, and also to Daysland Public Works Directors Cody Mayne, Tien Coté, and Wayne Zimmerman. I thank them for their expertise and knowledge in this project.” In closing, Krips extended his praise to present CAO Jody Quickstad, saying the two have been colleagues for close to 25 years. “When Jody was in Vegreville, and I was here, and when I was in Viking, I would phone Jody on a constant basis for advice; on policies, on procedures, and Jody was always so willing to share his work and expertise. “The Town of Daysland is very fortunate to have you here, Jody, and for what you do for public service.” After Krips, MLA Jackie Lovely took to the podium briefly to remark that when Municipal Affairs had received the application in 2020, they’d said it was literally the best-prepared application they’d received to date, praising Krips, saying, “I was very proud to be able to say, ‘He’s from my community.’” Brent Scherger added his thanks, saying, “Nu Edge Construction was honoured to be a part of the grand opening of the Daysland Waste Water Upgrades today. “We appreciate being able to work alongside local communities and projects that support, promote, and develop rural Alberta. We look forward to further collaboration on projects to come.”

Ph: 587-340-7674 sales@daminternational.ca Relocating to Flagstaff has turned out to be more than just a wise business move for Derek and Melinda Kroetsch. It has also resulted in the couple finding the perfect balance between work and family life. “Flagstaff has given us a chance to actually spend more time with the kids,” Derek says in a recent interview. “We actually have a work-life balance. Melinda and I have actually never spent so much time together and it’s been great.” The Kroetsches own and operate DAM International Inc., a business now based in Killam that specializes in exporting farm machinery to overseas markets and importing equipment from countries like Sweden, the UK, China, and Australia. DAM International handles everything from disassembly and washing to packaging and paperwork, offering happy clients a onestop solution for their logistics needs. What sets DAM International apart is its hands-on approach to logistics, offering services that many other companies outsource. “We provide a part-time solution
for something that our customers would typically need to hire a fulltime employee for,” Derek explains. This personalized service not only reduces costs for their clients but also ensures that every step of the process is handled with care and expertise, making DAM International the go-to for businesses in

wash bays for cars and trucks – had come up for auction. “Derek came home and said, ‘Would you move to Killam if I got this building for the right price?’ So two weeks later, we owned a building and we had bought a house and here we are,” Melinda says with a smile. The initial plan for the new com-

search of reliable and efficient logistics solutions. Derek and Melinda relish their life in rural Alberta, but the story of this family-run enterprise with global reach started several years ago in Edmonton. “We were running a shop out of Edmonton,” Melinda recalls. “We were renting space essentially and then that space was under renovation. So we had to try to find a new shop to disassemble and wash the equipment that we send overseas.” The Kroetsches soon discovered that the cost of a new commercial space in Alberta’s capital didn’t make good business sense. It was around this time that Derek found out that a property in Killam – that came with an unexpected bonus:
mercial space was to use the wash bays for their export-import business. But Derek and Melinda soon recognized that the wash bays were well used by loyal customers, and so the couple elected to keep them open. “The car bays are not a moneymaker by any means, but the community asked us to keep it open so that they didn't have to travel somewhere else. So we were on board with that,” Melinda says. Indeed, DAM International’s success is driven by their commitment to customer satisfaction and their ability to offer personalized comprehensive services. Their clients, many of whom are overseas, know they can rely on DAM International to handle complex logistics
with care and precision. “We’ve come up with some pretty unique solutions for very difficult challenges,” Derek notes. Beyond their logistics services, the Kroetsches have made a point of supporting the local community. From employing local trucking companies and suppliers to keeping the car wash open by popular demand, DAM International is deeply committed to the area. For Derek, the move to Flagstaff has been a homecoming of sorts. He grew up on a farm between Daysland and Heisler, before moving away at a young age to join the military and then eventually accruing his first-hand knowledge of the logistics industry by working with various transportation companies. Once upon a time, Derek, who has also taught logistics at MacEwan University in Edmonton, had considered moving his family to one of this country’s major urban centres. “We had the option of Vancouver or Toronto or Montreal, and we ended up in Killam,” Derek says, noting there are endless benefits to living two kilometres from work. “The kids have seen nothing but opportunities here. Our daughter joined the local volleyball team. Our son joined curling and even hockey here. That was very untouchable and unreachable in the Edmonton-Leduc area. “We find things out here are much more volunteer-orientated, yet very, very affordable.” Looking ahead, the Kroetches plan to continue growing their business in Killam, staying true to their roots while exploring new opportunities. “We’re here, we’re open and we’re always willing to take suggestions,” Derek says. “It’s a simple phone call that can solve your problem.” For the Kroetsch family, DAM International is more than just a business – it’s a way to connect with their community, spend more time with each other, and make a global impact from their small-town base in Killam. THE VICTIM OF INSURANCE FRAUD IS YOU
WE WANT YOU TO BE AWARE
Some people think of insurance fraud as a victimless crime. They say it’s just a big, impersonal corporation that will have to pay, as if that makes it more acceptable. Of course, that isn’t the case. Fraud is never acceptable. And, in the end, It’s you, the honest policy holders who are robbed. They cheat, you pay! Insurance fraud is a crime, and we urge you to treat it as you would any other crime. Report it. If you know of an incident, call the Police or Crimestoppers.

BRAED members meet in Daysland for late-summer BBQ Leslie Cholowsky Editor
Battle River Alliance for Economic Development, or BRAED, members met informally at Daysland on Friday, Sept. 9 for a barbecue and to celebrate that community’s completion of its lift station and force main replacement project. BRAED Chair Stan Schulmeister, Reeve of Paintearth County, welcomed elected officials, CAOs, and economic development officers from member communities in attendance. Schulmeister said, “I’d like to start by acknowledging guests Garth Rowswell, MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright, and Jackie Lovely, MLA for Camrose,” adding that MLA Nate Horner sent his regrets. He also noted that there were BRAED board members in attendance, as well as representatives from Lakeland College, and Fortis, as well as the Battle River Research Group. Schulmeister said BRAED’s goal is to grow communities based on the shared understanding of challenges, opportunities, and innovation that is the spirit of rural Alberta. “It’s a big deal to have community events like this, and it’s especially important because Daysland is celebrating the completion of the wastewater upgrade. “Strong infrastructure is critical to continued economic development in our communities. “And, as we do in rural communities, we will share some great food as we gather to have conversations and drive our collective work for better future for the communities in the BRAED region.” Schulmeister gave a quick rundown of BRAED, calling it a rural economic development organization that represents 22 communities and covers Highways 14, 13, and some of 12. “The purpose of BRAED is to leverage economic opportunities to grow our communities. This can be by bringing communities together for shared opportunities, by building economic development capacity in our member communities, or by connecting our communities. BRAED is about community building and the power of a region. “We are passionate about our communities and want to ensure a thriving future, however this will Continued on Page 24

Embarrassed? Angry? Frustrated? How do you feel about your province spending THE LEAST per student on public education in all of Canada?
As proud citizens of this province, we cannot stand by while Alberta’s governmental policies continue to neglect education. Schools urgently need your help. Now is the time to take action. Alberta continues to spend the least on public education per student compared to any other province in Canada. This neglect has left our schools and students in dire need of support, creating a crisis in Alberta’s public education system. The latest report from the Fraser Institute in late 2023 starkly highlights that Alberta’s education spending is the lowest in the nation. Insufficient funding for public education leads to unmet student needs, overcrowded classrooms, the elimination of diverse programs, and decreased support for students with complex issues. These compounded problems have driven many dedicated teachers to leave their profession in despair. It’s time to address these injustices and right the wrongs. We must advocate for increased funding and resources to support our students and educators. Want to help make a difference for Albertans everywhere? Demand answers from your MLA about why Alberta spends the least on public education per student in all of Canada. It’s time to stop the excuses and take action. Together, we can ensure a brighter future for our children and our province.

Repairing the roof of Alliance’s Community Hall Diane Dammann Alliance P. 780-879-3970 E. petendia@gmail.com
There is a Library Board meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10. We will be discussing changing hours. There are 765 million people in the world who do not have basic literacy, with two-thirds of them being women. We are so fortunate to have education and the libraries. The library has a couple of contests going on, drop in and check them out. Molly Boudreault has returned from a trip to Germany and England to visit with family. Molly comes from a family of 12 children which are now scattered around the
world, so she does a lot of globetrotting just to visit. The Battle River Train Excursions Board is meeting on Monday, Sept. 9. We are looking for volunteers. I am the volunteer chair, so let me know what you would like to do. We will be planning our 2025 runs. The roof on the community hall is in need of repair. The repair process is in the planning works. Buildings are great, but they always seem to need some upkeep. A trip to Moose Jaw has been on the bucket list for a few years for daughter Deb and I. We pulled it off last week with the assistance of Trudy Lamoriss. We did all three tunnel tours, a trolly tour, and, of course, the mineral pool. I can’t believe all that water on the fourth floor. What were
they thinking? The large pool is on the fourth floor of the Temple Gardens. I didn’t see any water dripping on the ground floor, but really, what an engineering feat. On the way home from Moose Jaw, I attended the Alberta Women’s Institute (AWI) Council meeting in Red Deer (Red Deer is on the way home, eh?). Bernadette Logozar has resigned, and we presented her with a gift before continuing with the meeting. I am on the chair of the Resolutions Committee. That means that I make sure resolutions being put forward are properly worded and researched before sending them out to the membership to vote on. We will be speeding up the approval process. Over the years and still
today, AWI presents resolutions to the appropriate bodies of government to make changes. This year we are working on getting the Federal Government to stop sending needles for drugs to the inmates in Federal Institutions. Instead, we would like to see rehabilitation programs. We are still working on getting the shingles vaccine covered by Health Care.

BRSD sets new cell phone and social media policy Kari Janzen Staff Reporter Battle River School Division (BRSD) released their personal mobile device and social media policy last week, required by the Alberta government’s introduction of a province-wide restriction on cellphone use in the classroom, which was announced in June. “More than 68,000 parents, teachers, and school staff shared feedback on student cellphone use through an online survey between April 16 and May 3, 2024. “Based on that feedback, Alberta’s government (established) standards that (were) implemented on Sept. 1 to ensure personal mobile devices and social media do not disrupt learning,” the Alberta government’s website says. Students’ personal mobile devices include cellphones, tablets, laptops, Chromebooks, smartwatches, and any gaming devices including electronic toys. These devices must be silenced or shut off while in the classroom. “All personal mobile devices must be kept in silent mode or powered off dur-
ing instructional time and stored in students' backpacks, bags, or locked lockers,” BRSD’s policy says. Instructional time is defined as “time allocated in the school day specifically dedicated to delivering planned educational programs and activities; this includes guest or visitor presentations. This time is focused on teaching students the prescribed curriculum and achieving learning outcomes set by Alberta Education,” and does not include student breaks, recess, lunch, and other non-instructional activities. School WiFi and school devices will restrict access to social media sites, which is also extended onto staff in schools, where they must abide by the same social media guidelines set in place. “Staff are expected to model proper mobile device use and behaviour during instructional time. “Students and staff cannot access social media on wireless school networks or school devices,” the policy says. Exceptions are made for students who require access to their device for their physical health, or for specific learning needs.
“Limited use of personal mobile devices must be permitted, as determined by a principal or equivalent, for health or medical reasons or to support social learning needs. “This must be documented within a Student Support Plan (SSP) as indicated and supported by a medical professional,” says the policy. While some parents might have appreciated the potential to directly con-
tact their child in case of an emergency, with the new cellphone policy BRSD directs parents to phone the school. “In emergencies or when time is of the essence, parents/guardians should contact the school through the main office phone,” the policy says. While the cellphone restrictions were implemented on Sept. 1, school boards have been given until Jan. 1, 2025, to have their policies in place.

Former exchange student pays visit to Sedgewick Sandra Erickson Ph: 780-384-2030
Sedgewick email: sedgewicknews@gmail.com
It's great to see exchange students here at CHSPS. They contribute so much to a school's culture. For 10 days in August, the Burden family enjoyed the company of a returning exchange student from 27 years ago, Stephanie (Bartel) Minkwitz from Berlin. She and her husband, Andre; 15-year-old daughter, Inga; and 10year-old son, Arne, were on a Western Canadian camping tour for five weeks, starting on Vancouver Island and continuing through the rockies, with Drumloche Farm as
their final destination. Stephanie was hosted by the Morrisons of Sedgewick and she was able to reconnect with host sister Melody Sheedy. The family also paid a visit to Bob and Karen Kampen, who were EF reps for the area back in 1997. Jerry-Lynn took them to the Lougheed Colony, where they were given a most interesting threehour tour and they visited both the Sedgewick and Iron Creek Museums. Combine rides, campfires at the farm, and waterskiing at Hardisty Lake were highlights. As they live in an apartment in Berlin, the dogs, cats, cows, and horses on the farm were very much enjoyed. On their last day here they took in all the fun of
the Flagstaff Highland Festival and dance, which was a wonderful way to end the visit! Seeing this German family connecting with ours, creating new friendships, and making memories, is a testament to the lasting legacy of student exchanges. If you are interested in hosting an exchange student, contact the Battle River School Division Homestay Program for international students. International students from many different countries are applying to join your local school and need wonderful families to welcome them. Students require accommodations from three months to one year. Host families receive a generous $800 monthly stipend to offset expenses. They
welcome any type of family unit to participate in this program. Think about it! Thank you for sharing the lasting relationships you can build by hosting a student, Jerry-Lynn! The Sedgewick Senior Centre is hosting an Open House on Wednesday, Sept. 25. All seniors are welcome to come have a coffee and learn what will be happening at the centre this coming year. League floor curling will be starting in October. The Flagstaff Players are holding open auditions for their Spring 2025 musical production Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The audition date is Thursday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the Sedgewick Community Hall. Please
come prepared to sing a song, it can be from the musical or not. If none of these dates work for you, please contact the club for an appointment. Check the classified ads for more information. I cannot wait to see the production! Thank you to James and Shannon Steil for donating the ramp and dog poop scooper tools to the Sedgewick Dog Park. It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Kenneth William Zimmer died peacefully on August 15, 2024, at the age of 88, at the Daysland Health Centre with his wife and family by his side. Ken was born on March 26, 1936, to George and Trace (Wolbeck) Zimmer. He was the second oldest child of 10. Ken grew up on the family farm which is still there 4 miles north of Heisler. On July 21, 1958, he married the love of his life, Betty Niehaus and together they raised 5 children. They lived on a couple of farms before settling on the Niehaus homestead, five-and-ahalf miles northeast of Heisler. The family was raised on a mixed grain farm with range and feeder cattle, dairy cows,
chickens, turkeys and pigs. Ken and Betty moved into their new home in Daysland in 2004 and then into Daysland Providence Place in 2022. Ken enjoyed playing cards, baseball and hockey. He played on many teams and made many friends. Papa loved having his grandchildren and great grandchildren around. Fredella Anderson
Fredella Anderson, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully at the Killam Continuing Care Centre on July 20, 2024, at the age of 92 years.
Fredella was born in Swalwell, Alberta on May 10, 1932, and grew up on a farm near Beiseker until she moved with her parents to Calgary in 1948. She attended most of her high school time at CUC in Lacombe and then graduated from Crescent Heights High School in Calgary. She completed a twoyear pre-nursing course at CUC, briefly worked at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary, then went to nursing school at Port-
land Adventist Sanitarium for one year. In 1953 she married Harry Anderson, and they created their life on the farm. She enjoyed being a farm wife and faithfully supported Harry in all his singing ventures in the surrounding communities by playing the piano for him. She served as a church organist/pianist and led out or provided support in other various church duties. Those who loved Fredella will remember her
for her care for others, her great cooking, the pride she took in caring for her yard and flowers, her sense of humour, her high standards, and her tenacity and determination. She will be deeply and sadly missed. She is predeceased by Harry, her loving husband of 58 years, her daughter Charlene, parents Charles and Dorothy Litke and six siblings. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Harriet
Amundson, Bonnie Kenny, and Cheryl (Ed) Jones; grandchildren Michael (Keira) Kenny, Madelaine Amundson (Nathan Rayment), Samantha (Brad) Nichols, Emma Amundson, Braeden Jones, Dean Jones, Dylan Jones; three great-grandchildren, Callum Kenny, Lainey Kenny, Watson Nichols; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Sedgewick Seventh-Day
Adventist Church on Saturday, September 14th at 2 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Battle River Community Foundation – Harry & Fredella Anderson Fund or to the Sedgewick SDA Church – Good Will Fund. Shannon Lee Mackey
2 November 1961 23 August 2024 It is with great sorrow, the family announces the death of our beloved son, brother, father, and grandfather, Shannon Lee Mackey, on 23 August 2024 in Nanaimo, BC, where he had made his home for the last 36 years.
He was born in Viking on November 2, 1961 and lived and went to school there until the family moved to the farm in 1972. His schooling was finished in Killam and Sedgewick. He was fond of high school sports; track, basketball, and later, fast cars. He began working on oil rigs, working with his dad, brothers-in-law, and brother at times, going from floor hand to driller. He married Cindy Harder in 1985. They decided to move to Nanaimo in early 1988 and their son Chase was born there shortly after.
When that marriage dissolved, he was a parttime single dad as well as taking business classes at the university. He worked as an agent for mutual funds and investment companies. He married Marla Taylor who had two sons, and together they had a son, Braden, in 1998 and a daughter, Brianna, in 1999. Shannon became ill during and after the lock down but was finally diagnosed last September with fourth-stage pancreatic cancer. His first grandson was born in May 2023, so he had a short time to enjoy being a grandfather. All
of the family from Alberta have made the trip out to visit in the last year, as well as many of his good friends. Shannon is survived by his mother, Myrna; his children, Chase (Tamara and grandson
Weston), Brianna, Braden, and stepsons Steven and Darren, and Marla, their mother. Also by brothers Harlen (Gabe), Jamie (Heidi) and sisters Sina (Vic), Kris, Kari (Len), and Ally (Shawn) and many
nieces, nephews, and friends. Shannon was predeceased by his father Melvin, brother Reed, brother-in-law Daryl Fossum and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

BRAED Continued from Page 12 only be achieved if we work together.” Schulmeister says that rural communities are facing some real challenges today, including losing population, while cities continue to grow. “This is happening in a province that is economically booming, and the major centres are growing quickly.” He says, “Our question becomes: How can we participate in this growing economy to sustain our communities. No community grant will overcome this gap in economic growth. We’ve watched as coal transition funding did not reverse the tide. The question is what is possible to achieve the most economic growth we can with the 35,000 people who still live here? For 20 years our communities have relied on a regional approach, which we have found to be immensely valuable. “As small communities, we know we cannot do this work alone; we need to work together. “Together our communities worked with Invest Alberta on the regional investment initiative, as a pilot project; we are currently partnering with the Northeast Alberta Information Hub and Palliser Economic Partnership to restart the Eastern Alberta Trade Corridor. “This is a prime vehicle to build a strong economic corridor on the eastern side of the province, and bring trade from the QEII corridor out to this eastern part of the province.” Schulmeister says the Ministry of Jobs, Economy, and Trade is supporting work in economic development and said the Provincial government has built an economic dashboard to highlight all Alberta communities, “to make it easier for investors to stop, shop, and find opportunities in rural communities. “The intent of this initiative was good,” he says, “however currently it is difficult for our communities to stand out in this dashboard compared to the communities on the Highway 2 corridor. We can be found on the dashboard by potential in-
vestors looking for site selection, however, we cannot connect with them, nor tell them our rural advantage of housing accessibility and workforce. “Unfortunately, this dashboard acts as an unofficial ranking card on metrics such as population growth, which require a steady partnership from the province. “BRAED is committed to working with the Provincial government to support rural economic development. Collectively, we need to find a way to change the key economic indicators found on this dashboard and highlight our rural advantage. “The needles need to move on population growth, labour force, and more. We need a clear, consistent path as to how to reverse our economic
trends and build economic recovery consistent with the rest of the province.” Schulmeister acknowledged that there are opportunities available with economic development grants to support local initiatives, but says, “These are largely one-offs.” He says BRAED hopes that the grants do create opportunities for those communities who have the matching dollars, “However, many of our small communities are left out of grant opportunities, due to limited capacity, and our shrinking populations. “Creating sustainable growth will not happen with one-offs. We need to find a stronger way of working collaboratively to ensure the return on investment will be a longstanding value. “It is through events like
today that we reaffirm our committment to continue to meet and hold conversations, open communication, and collaborative problem solving. We are here to build the relationships needed to help reverse this decline.” Schulmeister was also joined by BRAED’s new executive director Caroline McAuley at the event. BRAED has 22 member communities, including Flagstaff County, Daysland, Forestburg, Sedgewick, Lougheed, Alliance, and Hardisty. Members also include Beaver County, the Town of Viking, the Town of Irma, and the Village of Ryley, as well as the County of Wainwright No. 61, and Paintearth County No. 18, and the Town of Wainwright.

Two big weddings celebrated in Hardisty Ricci Matthews Ph: 780-888-2490
Hardisty Call Ricci with your news!
Well hello folks. Hope you enjoyed your Labour day holiday and you are now in the swing of harvest. You might be harvesting your lovely garden, or you are a farmer and harvesting the vast fields of wheat, canola, barley, peas, etc., or getting your hay and straw bales ready for winter. Rural Alberta folks are all busy and trying to beat the heat, rain, or God help us, even snow. You never know what weather extremes Alberta will surprise you with. Our little granddaughter came to the farm, with her mummy, to check the garden and harvest some carrots and cucumbers. This little monkey was in heaven, stomping around in the dirt and carrying vegetables. She is 19 months old and was carrying a thick 12-inch (30 cm) long cucumber. She had already chewed off a good three inches (7.5 cm) of skin and the inner cucumber pulp. She proudly showed me her big cucumber and held it close to her chest like it was a prize. The look on her face was priceless. Her mum and I were laughing because we figure that her big surprise will be when the cucumber rips through her intestines and really fills that poor old diaper. No trouble with constipation there...haha. I always think that kids that can get dirty in soil build good immunity. Unsure if that is true or not but it sounds good, eh? There were two weddings this weekend in Hardisty. The first one was the Blake and Brook (Babenek) Hays wedding. Blake is the oldest son of David and Bobbi Jo Hays (Hays Farm and Ranch) and Brook is the daughter of James and Kylee Babenek (mom remarried and I do not know her new name, sorry). Their western wedding ceremony was held out on the farm, on a pasture,
overlooking a lake. It was a stunning view. The guests sat on hay bales covered in burlap. The stunning bride and very handsome groom stood on cow hides, under an archway decorated for the occasion. The marriage officiant was Gina Vetter. It was a sizzling 33 degrees celsius that afternoon, so the celebration was not long winded. Thank goodness there were liquid refreshments because the heat was oppressive, to the point that some of the guests cameras would not function properly. The lovebirds said their "I dos," and the party carried on. The wedding had a western theme and had a more casual appearance. The supper and dancing was held in Czar at the open air Czar 4-H Centre. It was interesting to see how many of the men were dressed in jeans, western shirts, and cowboy hats. There were many, what I call felt cowboy hats and a number of straw cowboy hats. The men did not remove their hats and a few women also had cowboy hats. These hats were not what you would call cheap hats. I did some Google research and those felt hats can range from $399-$799 and much higher depending on the fur/fabric used to fabricate the hat. There is some stringent etiquette regarding these hats. The one rule that stood out clear as a bell...You never touch another cowboy’s hat! NEVER, NEVER! The dancing on the packed dirt floor went on into the night. These young folks have endless energy but my man and I had to leave by1 a.m., our beds were calling us. Best wishes to Blake and Brook and may their married life remain as sizzling hot as the day they were married. The second wedding was held in town at the Hardisty Town Hall. Shaelyn Lefebvre was married to her love, Dylan Rollheiser. The proud parents are Warren and Karen Lefebvre of Hardisty and Dave and Sandra Rollheiser of Chauvin. They were joined in marriage by a marriage officiant. The maid of honour was the
bride's sister Erika and the other two bridesmaids were the brides friends, both named Kyla. The best man was Austin and the groomsman was Cody. Both gentlemen were coworkers of the groom. They had a fabulous catered meal and then the festivities began. They danced the night away. Grandpa Buelow, the bride’s grandpa, informed me that that he was very proud to say that he was able to dance with his great-granddaughters, named Harper and Scarlet. Grandma Marlene Buelow was also able to fulfill her wish and she had two dances.
The married couple will spend a few days in Waterton Park and in the spring they will have a proper honeymoon in Italy. We wish this young couple a lifetime of love and happiness and congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Rollheiser. Our community was very saddened to hear about the passing of a wonderful lady, Betty Manning. Betty is survived by her loving husband Rick and their three sons, Lee, Jason and Ryan and their spouses and children and extended families. Her funeral service took place on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Hardisty Community
Hall. Gina Vetter officiated. A private family interment took place at the Czar Cemetery. Gregory's Funeral Home (Wainwright) has a lovely memorial written up about her online. She loved music, dancing, nature, grandchildren and sitting around a campfire with family and friends. Rest in peace dear lady, you will be missed. St. Paul's United Church was happy to welcome Rev. Stephen Haughland to our first service after summer holidays. His sermon was titled, “Who wants to be a Christian?” He talked about many people who say they are not really Christians but
they believe in Spirituality. It sounds cooler to say you are spiritual but not religious. So what are you really? Hmmm? We are all a work in progress but listening to Rev. Haughland made being a Christian come to life. It makes you want to be a better person, yes, a better Christian. Sherry Hughes, Lay Minister, will preach the fourth Sunday of the month. Why not come and join us? Question of the week: “What hair colour do they put on the driver's licences of bald men?” Have a good week folks. Please call or send me some news. Thank you.
