ick off your shoes, grab your towel and hop on board whichever boat takes your fancy. This is the British Virgin Islands, a bewitching archipelago of some 60 islands and cays where sailors and sun-seekers come to play. Back in the day, it was pirates who holed up in the hidden harbours and sheltered bays, and it’s still a place to live out your Treasure Island fantasies. At the centre of things is Tortola, the main island, known for its great beaches, full moon parties and gnarly surfing. From here you can catch a ferry to a myriad of other islands, including sleepy Anegada, with its flat coral landscape and pink flamingos, and yachty favourite Jost Van Dyke, where the infamous Painkiller cocktail was invented at the Soggy Dollar Bar. If diving is your thing, begin your underwater adventures at the dive sites near Cooper Island, where a kaleidoscope of colourful sea life can be found amongst the sunken wrecks, or the spectacular rock formations known as The Baths, on the island of Virgin Gorda. The BVI is also home to some of the most exclusive private island resorts in the world, including Moskito Island, Guana Island and the famous Necker Island, where Sir Richard Branson likes to hang out when he’s not blasting off into space.
