USYD Architecture 2022 | BDES3027 - Sydne Harbour Drama House "Theater of Illuminate" by Haitian Jin
Sydney Harbour Drama House
I'm thinking about what kind of architecture needs in this era. It could have a pleasing appearance, an innovative and transcendent structure, a sustainable future
But the most important is the freedom of mind and body that brings people beyond time.

Acknowledgments
First and foremost I would like to express my gratitude to my Unit Coordinator Dr Ross Anderson and my Tutor Dr Neena Mandodesu for providing invaluable advice, continuous support, and patience during my study, without them or their support. I don't think that I would have gotten this far in this project.
I would also like to thank all the members of the remote group. It is their kind help and support that have made my online study a wonderful time.
Finally, I would like to thank my parents. They always show their tremendous understanding and encouragement in these semesters.
A Sence of Illuminate
Response to the Architectural Brief
Like William Shakespeare wrote in As You Like It, "The world is a stage." Which means the theater is the world, the director is God, and the actors are us. Each person performs his or her own script, some in heartbreaking tragedy, others in happy-go-lucky comedy. But when we die, will these so-called sadness, grief, anger, desire, happiness and love still exist?
I think the theater itself is a philosophical theme, where the audience can participate in each performance in the third person, and we will be immersed and we will be withdrawn. I think the theater itself is also an educational theme, where we can immerse ourselves in the cultural stories, connect with family and engage with enviornment.
Response to the Site
The name of the project is "illuminate" because of its location at the south head which marks the southern entrance to Port Jackson and Sydney Harbour, it is like a lighthouse that illuminates the endless darkness of the sea and our hearts.
Response to the conceptual framework
The building has an orange exterior inspired by the paintings of the indigenous people. The building has an organic shape inspired by Aboriginal song and Western classical music.
Overall, The design Integrates the Australian theatrical and literature thought. Aim to form an Enlightenment place in pursuit of the value of human happiness. A Respectful place Passing on Australian History and Culture. A Sustainable place pays responsibility to nature.
Growing from the roots
Site Selection
Sydeny Harbour Identify
The original intention of choosing the venue was to explore a unique place. The chosen three sites have a quite big differences, one close to the CBD Mckell park, one is a separate island: Shark Island, and one on the edge of the city: South Head
Their common feature is that the view is not blocked by the surrounding land and can see the full Sydney Harbour, which can show the site's advantage.
Site Selection
Mckell Park
This site has some rules that must be followed, and although the proximity to the city is easy to access, the rules relatively constrain the coastal area here.
Strengths Weakness
* Got views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge to the west and Sydney Heads to the east.
* There are manicured gardens surrounded by magnificent mature trees.
* Exotic Garden nearby.
* Wharf nearby, there will always be many ships coming and going.
* Historically significant and not just a building to be built. Opportunities.
Opportunities Threats
* Close to Darling Harbour, one of Sydney's most popular tourist destinations, and with many hotels nearby.
* A large number of art galleries in the vicinity, with a strong art scene.
* Weddings and private social events are restricted to less than 100 people.
* No marquees or wedding arches are permitted in association with the use of the park.
* The park is closed in the evenings except for New Year's Eve celebrations.
* Amusement devices such as jumping castles, petting zoos, kindy farms or pony rides.
Site Selection
Shark Island
Designing a theater on the edge of this island would be a very unique landscape. I think linking the history, culture and character of this island with the design principle will maximize the value of this island. But I didn't find any particular shining point here.
Strengths Weakness
* Great ocean views and views of Sydney Harbour Bridge.
* The whole island is protected from shark attacks.
* No wheelchair access. wheelchair access.
* In the middle of the ocean, which needs to be reached by boat.
* Has a history of being attacked by sharks.
Opportunities Threats
* Close to Sydney Harbour, one of Sydney's most popular tourist destinations.
* Sharks can be watched from a distance.
* Arrival will be a lot of hassle and inconvenient for most people.
Site Selection
Option 3 | Project Site
South Head
The south head has a strong historical significance and a deep indigenous culture. It is also an entry point to Port Jackson and Sydney Harbor, so there is a natural potential ambition to design a theater here that links to this land and the origins.
* There's no shortage of lookouts at South Head. * Far from the Sydney CBD.
Strengths Weakness Opportunities Threats
* Appealing to the most authentic of theatre lovers.
* Peace, enjoyment and immersion in nature.
* Arrival methods are restricted.
Site History
South Head
History Timeline
The timeline significant include occupation of the Birrabirragal people, European settlement, navigation, defence and military throughout WWII, HMAS Watson land and the current Sydney Harbour National Park management. This project wants to carry on the spirit of indigenous culture, protecting the land and lighting up the sea, and pass it on to more people.
Precedent Study
Prometeo Musical Space 1983 / 1984
Architect: Renzo Piano
Site: Venice
Re-drawn by: Haitian Jin
"Prometeo Musical Space" is a stage specially designed by Renzo Piano for the opera that the Venetian composer Nuigi Nono is completing.
The structure is a disassembled and assembled "instrument" made using shipbuilding techniques. The idea was to revolutionize the layout of a traditional theatre or concert hall, which means that the orchestra had to move around during performances, walking on stairs and sidewalks. In order to creat sound surround the spectator, arising from various locations and with alternating points.

Contextual
Inspired by theatrum mundi which was coined by a theologian John of Salisbury in the 12th-century1 Similar with Shakespeare, they both liken the world to a stage1. Both philosophical. Unfortunately the form and purpose of the stage has changed dramatically over time, there are kind of lost of the connection from acient wisdom with us, so I wish “Theater of Illuminate” could be a place where philosophical ideas can be conveyed
This collage have the icon of Theatrum mundi in the central, with "Corroboree" (The "Corroboree" is a theatrical and dramatic ceremony of the indigenous people of Australia1.) on the left respect the land and origins. On the right is the famous painting of the first fleet of British ships in 1788 in the sydney harbour, which respect the history of the land1 The background represent the Australia land that we live.

Conceptual
For the deisgn concept of this theater, enlightenment and culture heritage are two key points.
With the sun glows in the middle, showing the energy which links to nature. The sea as floor, arch as celling, and books around. Gods are flying showing the special meaning of this place.
The Collage Integrate the Australian theatrical and literature and thought. Aim to form a Enlightenment Boat pursuit the value of human happiness. A Respectful Boat Passing on Australian History and Culture. A Sustainable Boat pay Responsibility to the nature.
Project Concept
Nature, Music, Mind
Listening
In this design, the exploration of architectural space revolves around sound and light.
I propose that the formation of space needs to inform three functions:
* Listening to Aboriginal music and Classic Music.
* Listening to the sound of nature.
* Listening to the sound of our heart.
Here we will have a unique feeling, perhaps a sense of cultural intimacy, a sense of belonging to nature, a sense of freedom of the mind.

In a scale of 1:200, four main spaces were created in "circles".
1 Stuff Space (Private).
2 Aboriginal Music Space (Public+Private).
3 Classic Music Space (Public+Private).
4 Caffe and book Space (Public).

Aboriginal Music
Songlines & Dreaming
Aboriginal Australians have a deep connection to their ancestral and traditional practices. Music is a bridge of connection, helping them to connect more closely with their "dreams".
Dreams include creation myths, religion, past lives/births/deaths, historical events, connections to ancestors and gods, and other important life events. They believe that repeated listening to music can lead to spiritual revelation.
In the process of watching indigenous music being played, I created a painting incorporating their instruments.

Roots of Music
To some extent, music is rooted in nature, that is, in the songs of birds, the babbling brook, the waves of the sea, the rustling of leaves and the sounds of certain animals
Inspired by Prometeo Musical Space designed by Renzo Piano for Luigi Nono. Luigi Nono has succeeded in presenting the primordial drama of our existence. Prometheus is the founding myth of humanity.
The search for ancient wisdom and origins through classical music is an inspiration that I want to continue. Then, I drew this painting while listening to "Prometheus Suite, Abbado, Luzerun".

Audience & Performer
By overlapping, the basic shape of the design is formed.
* Extracting architectural elements from them: the platform, the roof and the supporting structure.
* Think about the dynamic line of the four "circles" arrangement.
* Linking the "Cafe+Library" as a separate space with the circulation convergence of the roof garden to form a large public space, providing a "nature living room" for the community and the audience.
* The "Abroginal Theater" dominates the center of the movement line.
* The "Stuff Office" is in the relatively secluded southeast corner.
* The "Classic Music Theater" is located between the "Abroginal Theater" and the "Stuff Office."

Site Plan
Theater of Illuminate
It was a spring morning, I woke up early and drove slowly and leisurely with my family to the south head, when we arrive, I walked along the walkway and saw the "Theater of Illuminate" on the water, with its roof like waves, orange building that shines like the sun and the floating corridor take us walk in. We are amazed because the city is behind us and nature is here...

Circulation Convergence
This staircase is the main circulation convergence of the big public space -- "Nature's Living Room". Which means it is the main path that connects the three roof gardens and Outdoor Aboriginal Theater.
Decisive Detail
Scenery Bridge
The Scenery Bridge is the transit space in this design, an area where people can listen to the sounds of nature, the sound of their heart.
Material Pallet
Construction
The four main circular buildings and the Scenery bridge are all steel structures, and the structure of the bridge is joined with the roof of the building to form a perfect curved bridge.
Piles in gird support the concrete deck, with planting soil and drainage layer under the planting area of the deck.
Where emptiness is full
Here we immerse ourselves in listening to indigenous music, watching indigenous dances, deeply linked to the land, feeling the taste of nature and thinking about the philosophy of life.

Assignment 1
Phase 1 Design Panels
Most important part of this Phase is the concept which form. Key point " Listening" connect with Natre, Music, Mind.
After exploring three sites, South head has been chosen, with the fabulous view and rich history. The site leading me giving the project the name " Illunimate", which wish cloud illuminates the endless darkness of the sea and our hearts. By analysis the formation drawing and making the concept model, the spatial arrangement had came out.
The design seperate the Backstage from Aboriginal Theater and Classic Music Theater.
The Aboriginal Theater is a Outdoor area in the pursuit of restoring historical and natural scenes.
Formative
Phase 2 Design Panels
Most important part of this Phase is the upgrade of spatial arrangement, which take the Lirbrary space out connect with circulation convergence to form a big public space-- "Nature's Living Room".
Also, I found out the style of this project, that leading me have a consistent drawing style.
Assignment 2
Phase 2 Design Panels
Most important part of this Phase is continuing refine the design and listing out the shortcomings
* Connection with site in Visual presentation effect .
* Formation process showing in detail.
* More rational space design in Aboriginal Theater and bridges.
* Showing future possibility in whole process.
* Construction detail improve.
* Clearly present the entire design process.
