Project brief & concept development:

Past: How did it get discovered/explored:

• ‘Imaroo’ named by aboriginal inhabitants • ‘Due to a reliable water supply from the river, Werribee became a travelling stop between melbourne and Geelong

Current: Werriebee is being explored Globally:

• Chiryu, Japan ( 2000) promote cultural and educational exchange and explore business opportunities • Costa Mesa(1996). encourage education exchange and cultural enrichnement.

What is valuable to explore locally:

• Natural features (Werribee River & K Road Cliffs) and wildlife sanctuaries (Point Cook Coastal Park & Heathdale Wetlands). • Historical attractions (Werribee Park Mansion & Victoria State Rose Garden and museums) • Strong local cultures, (Sculpture Walk at Werribee, Park , National Equestrian Centre)

Exploration:

1. From (French ceramicist) bernard Palissy’s grotto ideology, this stands for complete imitation of nature. 2. In 15th to 16th centuries. The ‘grotesques’ was referring to the sense of discovery. 3. Grottoes represented the reverse of rationally organized architecture. This was the irrational realm of the underworld, in which rules ceased to apply. The ‘constructed nature’- grotto architecture really express the intimacy between human and earth, human and nature.

Designing Process: Central Concept: Exploration

Architectural Language: Grotto

Grotto effect:

1. Inform the sense of nature and country

2. Express the growth of nature and the development (invasion) of the city

3 .Provide rich spatial experience, giving the sense of exploration

4. Create enclosed space, control the light

Who we are. What we want to achieve. • Creating varied otherworldly experiences for the audience passing by and users of the theatrical piece as per design concept of exploration. • A piece that will change with the progression of time. • A certain degree of artificiality from our previous argument.

Plants selections: Local vegetation that naturally grows in freedrainaging soils in the wild will give most considerations for this project, since their low management requirement.

Box at highier position: 5-10cm substrate, simple sedum/moss species & grass Lomandra fluviatilis Lomandra longifolia Themeda triandra Myoporum parvifolium Scaevola calendulacea Zoysia tenuifolia

munities, dry meadow communities, low growing drought tolerant perennials, grasses and alpines, small bulbs Westringia fruticosa Gazania tomentosa Liriope muscari Dianella caerulea Carpobrotus rossii Bower Spinach Enchylaena tomentosa Ruby Saltbush Myoporum parvifolium
