Dear readers, This issue is all about new products, inspirations & ideas that will help you keep you up to date with the latest launches of the Interior Design Industry. We bring you the best from Maison&Objet, which kicked off the 2019 Design Agenda, as well as a preview of the PAD Paris and the Milan Design Week, combined with the ultimate guides to both events. CovetED was, of course, in Paris last January for Maison & Objet to see first hand the new trends for 2019, and had the opportunity to interview Hubert de Malherbe - head of Malherbe Design - a Parisian Interior Design studio specialized in retail interiors, working for luxury brands like Dior and Sephora. We got to know a bit more about the company and learned how to create outstanding retail interiors for luxury brands. As summer is fastly approaching, we also took the opportunity to pick out the best new outdoor designs to nourish your appetite for new ideas, and help you spruce up your outdoor space be it; a backyard, a front yard, or a patio. Finally, a quick note about the shortlist of Covet International Awards – you will find all the winning projects and the designers behind them in this issue of CovetED Magazine, to the Design gallerist editorial, which brings a selection of unique designs from the 20th and 21st century - and a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld in the fashion section of the Magazine, which revisits the Fashion icon’s career. HUBERT DE MALHERBE

TREND FILE //

Malherbe Paris is one of the most prominent interior design agencies in France. Specializing in retail and hospitality design, the firm, headed by Hubert de Malherbe, is very well known thanks to the outstanding retail interiors they create. It’s not a random fact that Hubert de Malherbe has been working for 17 years with Dior. Their unique and modern approach to how a retail business should look like, while maintaining the French heritage as a core pillar is probably what defines the best Malherbe Paris’ work. To create the most outstanding retail interiors you need 3 very important things: you have to perfectly portray the brand’s culture, have a deep knowledge on what the brand’s target seek and how to provide the experience the client seeks without even realising it.

“Since the beginning, we have been a hyper-creative studio who expresses a French culture of fantasy, elegance, never forgetting modernity.”

Dior has always been seen as the ultimate impersonation of the French femininity and style. And to transport that vision onto retail design proves to be a huge challenge. But not for Malherbe Paris. Hubert spent 17 years working with extraordinary people at Dior, and the studio has picked up the work 12 years ago. Consulting for such creative minds is demanding, he says, but utterly rewarding. And to accompany a brand like Dior through the delicate process of reinvention, as he states, it’s a unique experience. He permanently has 15-20 people working for Dior in his studio, but his mind is never off topic. Hubert rightfully claims that he, apart from the brand’s CEO, is the one who has lasted the longest working in the brand, which is the result of his unparalleled commitment. He stated that it is good to feel such pressure from a major brand like Dior, as it helps with the creative process and the energy that is so crucial to his long, last-standing work.

COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 19.

The retail business has travelled to a place where it became the wonderland for effortlessness, in Hubert’s opinion. The Internet has taken over the remarkable tradition of going to a store and look for what we want. Instead, with a few gentle taps on our smartphones, we get everything we need. No travelling, no effort, and, furthermore, no experience. That’s the way Hubert sees it, the technological revamp of a transaction. Moreover, Hubert distinguishably notes that, nowadays, people are attracted to places where they can live the moment. Get an experience. Acquire memories. He remarks that a restaurant that indeed works well is the one that provides you with a complete experience, from the simplest form of how a menu is presented to you to its interior design. For him, that is the experience, and that’s what people look for. Nowadays, it is rather impossible to properly design without mentioning the ever-present elephant in the room: the role of traditional craftsmanship. Over the years, Malherbe Paris has worked with a variety of gifted artists and craftsmen, whose efforts helped elevate the good name of Malherbe to the spotlights where it shines today. Craftsmanship has a very important role to play in retail design, thus to have unique, high-quality designs that can stand the traumas of time and misuse means to have a timeless and tireless design.

“We have a lot of partners who are glass blowers, cabinetmakers, rug makers... a wide variety of artists. In fact, it’s in our best interest to work with these artists, with people who aren’t famous at all but are beginning to get recognition for their work.” Hubert names the Studio’s strong Asian presence in virtue of the exponential growth of the Far-Eastern culture. With offices in Shanghai and Hong Kong, Asia is quickly becoming a core market for the French Studio, as the righteous Asian community evermore seek the essence of Design Française. The demands of the Asian retail market are not the same of the Western ones. Asian people are probably the most demanding clientele in terms of experience. In a culture impregnated with technological development, to have a good experience is crucial. The major retail players are investing heavily in renowned interior designers so they can provide them with the experience their clients seek. And that’s where Malherbe Paris has been thriving.

TREND FILE //

For Hubert, inspirations come from people. The people we love, the people who aren’t afraid to stand up to what they believe it’s right, the people whose work touches us in ways that normally we wouldn’t even notice. The people who peacefully revolutionise, the way technology brought us closer and has dramatically eased up our lives. Hubert invites the ubertalented people of his office to be a part of this revolution, an open-minded, dynamic and creative uprising. In his accomplished opinion, we own nothing but our forefathers’ heritage. Now add that same heritage to a sophisticated equation of a new design and you get true creation, as so remarks Hubert. Alluring people with design is a strong force that drives him. It’s not truly important if they are the owners of a business society, a restaurant, a hotel or even an entertainment hub. What does matter is the feeling that they get when the project is finished. The experience they get when going to a retail business.

‘’I think nowadays the heritage is very important, it’s what the people seek, the French heritage design.’’ In retail design, there is an element that is often left to oblivion, states Malherbe. And that element is love. Hubert expertly claims that love is a powerful force that drives people, as love is strongly connected to desire and the desire of creating long-lasting memories. The desire to own objects that make you feel something, the desire to go to places where you’ll reminisce blissful times. For Hubert, people are driven by love, and the retail business, like hospitality, it takes full advantage of it. Furthermore, he theorizes that a good retail service provides you with not only your mundane and pragmatic needs but also with an unforgettable experience.

‘’Love is what drives us, and it’s a positive thing. And love is something connected with desire, and memories. Objects that bring you memories, places that bring you memories. People are driven by love and hospitality takes advantage.’’ As for challenges in his prestigious line of work, Hubert emboldens Europe’s chronic pessimism and design delay in comparison with other places and individuals. Hubert states that, when he started working, Asia had an unfortunate complex of inferiority to the Western World’s creativity and modernity. A complex of inferiority that has come to slowly dissipate courtesy of completely different hands. The emergent SouthEastern Asian countries such as Vietnam and Philippines are following their more developed brothers’ footsteps and becoming major harbouring hubs of sophisticated design. And for Hubert, Europe and the USA are becoming a sort of plan b regions.

‘’I think Europe’s very delayed in terms of design. When I started working, Asia had a complex of inferiority regarding the creativity and the modernity in the Western world. Nowadays that’s over.’’

FUORISALONE Fuorisalone is the set of events distributed in different areas of Milan on the same days Salone Internazionale del Mobile takes place, which is staged in the stands of Rho Fiera. Fuorisalone premieres the latest trends for the forthcoming year and heralding a ginormous tidal wave of events, exhibitions and presentations.

Fuorisalone’s Design Districts introduce the new collection of luxury brands and designs and also host special exhibitions with live music and entertainment for a totally unmissable soiree. Young and talented designers from all over the world pack their innovative creations and come to Milan, rent one of the city’s garages from locals, and show their prototypes to a curious and cultivated audience. Now, take a look at five of the best design districts that completely light up Milan during this time. The Tortona district is the showcase of the biggest names in the design industry. In 2017, the Tortona Design District has played its trump cards: Base Milano, a new multifunctional venue, located at the former industrial Ansaldo complex, has hosted exhibitions and projects dedicated to the theme of nomadic living, with portable, floating houses, user-friendly objects and itinerant structures.

Brera Design District is the most important district in Italy for the promotion of design, the latter of which is one of the most creative and commercial focal points in the country. The district aims to support excellence and to develop business and real estate in the area, enhancing the district’s cultural supply and appeal, as well as fusing tradition and innovation in the all-encompassing field of design. More than 200 exhibitors are expected to present their new projects and ideas to a design perceptive and culturally oriented public. These showcases will be enhanced by the artsy nature and surroundings of the district, especially the narrow and cobbled streets that encompass a wide range of antique shops, showrooms and galleries. The Isola Design District saw its inception just last year, counting with the participation of over 100 designers and brands. The event favours international and emerging designers, local artisans and creative start-ups to showcase their projects and establish business contact amidst one of the most vital design weeks in the whole world. It is by supporting sectors like design, fashion, its local workshops, green design and gastronomy that the event has been able to develop its artistic and historical heritage and it only shows signs of growing even further.

Wonder blossoms through an unexpected material; sparks from the dialogue between art and function; dawns from an imaginary world that is powerful and enchanting. It often seems impossible to know how these works are made or what they are made of. This mystery around their creation, as much as their avant-garde aesthetic, gives soul and energy to what would otherwise be just a console, a seat, a lamp, or a table. Fantasy fuses with the object, creating a dreamy aesthetic, full of energy and imagination.

OUTDOOR I N S P I R AT I O N S NEW DESIGNS

&

As each day goes by, the outdoor space is gaining more and more popularity, becoming one of the most crucial areas of a contemporary home. It is the place dedicated for entertainment and family gatherings where exquisite summer feasts and serene contemplations take place and, as such, it’s imperative that its decor should follow certain levels of comfort and luxury. Numerous trends have made quite the impact in the outdoor area, including soft and lavish furniture, highly decorated pillows and blankets, shaded spots and even cosy fire pits which, all together, create a homey oasis in its entirety. In 2019, colour will play a major part in this time of change within this sector. Colour brings in a feeling of positivity and balance into a space. For example, bold and vivid colours such as red or purple will accentuate the qualities of your outdoor and make quite the statement. These two tones are also complementary to others,

such as blue and green, which in turn add richness to a space and work extremely well with surrounding landscapes. Obviously, one simply cannot talk about colour nowadays without mentioning the 2019 Pantone Colour of the Year, Living Coral. One can introduce this warm and accent hue into a series of elements, from pillows to umbrellas, as well as decorative accessories. Now more than ever, the outdoor area is all about having a retreat that brims with serenity and tranquillity. A simple way to achieve such a notion is by entangling your space with nature. There are countless ways to do this, you can opt to combine pavers with adjacent grass or gardens and give it a “fade away” effect that is rather dramatic when used with plank-style pavers. If you prefer a more aesthetic look, make sure to introduce patterns into your design.

Blurring the lines between your indoor and outdoor spaces is becoming one of the main trends in the home and remodelling sector. In this case, you have to go beyond the conventional, relying only on windows and patio doors won’t do the trick. Instead, install fully folding walls and screens as this will allow you to have a more open space that will, in fact, create a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors. Another great strategy is having a standard kitchen or even a stunning seating area, giving a familial vibe to the whole space.

Garden Layers Collection of Indian Beds by Patricia Urquiola for GAN When it comes to lighting, there’s no such thing as too much. Lighting has the ability to set the mood and envelop one in a dreamy atmosphere, especially when night-time comes. For instance, you can use solar lamps to light meandering garden paths or outdoor floor lamps to embellish your sanctuary. You can also place lighting pieces around your outdoor furniture or use light strings to create a more romantic and whimsical ambience. Furthermore, well-designed, built-in lighting systems are also of the utmost importance. With the advancement of LED Technology and smartphone apps, automatically installing this type of lighting systems has become way more accessible than ever. In regards to general architecture and design, linear and large pavers, modular textures, water features, the use of various materials, such as wood, marble, concrete and textured walls, among others, have become some of the most sought-after elements to incorporate into one’s outdoor area. These are simple yet effective components that beautify and add value to your outdoor living space.

Marquis Table Lamp by estudiHac for Vondom

Now, let’s talk about the latest novelties and trends in the industry. Recently, renowned designer Patricia Urquiola has collaborated with outdoor brands to create mesmerizing designs, including a series of postmodern tables for Kettal and the Garden Layers collection of Indian beds for GAN. The former includes tables with circular tops that are supported by chunky lacquered aluminium stems mounted on cylindrical blocks of concrete, whereas the latter highlights a combination of innovative fabrics and fillings, as well as a comprehensive range of patterns and colours inspired by the traditional Mughal culture and architecture.

INSPIRATIONS // The outdoor-specialised brand, Vondom, has unveiled a few novelties this year, including Suave by Marcel Wanders and the Marquis table lamp by estudiHac. Suave is a complete collection that grants the spotlight to exquisite materials and textures found in superb designs, such as a modular sofa, an ornamented coffee table, comfortable pouffes, among other pieces that provide a glamorous and warm touch to any outdoor space. Marquis presents an outstandingly characteristic fold system, which was inspired by the moulds of folded paper for developing pleated fabrics that generates a new textured skin made of basic triangles of shiny polycarbonate. This exclusive piece creates a singular interplay of shadow and light. British dynamic duo Doshi Levien has created a new outdoor collection for B&B Italia. The outdoor seating designs feature a monolithic and sculptural shape and provide quite the visual contrast. They are best defined by their enveloping volumes, that are made from the weaving of double polypropylene fibre. Foscarini has just unveiled a new piece for their extraordinarily creative Twiggy Family, the Twice as Twiggy Grid Floor Lamp. This marvellous outdoor lighting design features architectural details and an iconic shape. The long stem of the lamp is made of materials initially manufactured for fishing rods, to counter-balance weight and create a graceful curve that hovers in the air. The steel collections designed by Florent Coirier for EMU have a minimalist design but a great personality: Miky is a restyling of bistro chairs from a modern perspective, using straight and clear-cut lines and generous shapes; Mom, instead, is lively and colourful, with a soft and cosy structure. Strong and stackable, Miky and Mom are intended for trendy and dynamic furnishing, effortlessly adjusting to a variety of possible uses.

’We are a small studio and we do about everything regarding industrial design, furniture design, lighting fixtures, interior architecture and artistic consultation for the brand. We’re like a small family. Very artisanal. ‘’

‘’Yes, we often work with galleries like Carpenter’s Workshop, which has exceptional craftsmen that are very hard to find. It’s very satisfactory to research with these guys, with their savoir-faire. ‘’ As for their favourite type of project, they don’t have a specific one, per say. They both agreed that trying out new things, and researching new ways and concepts is what they love the most.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW //

“I think we love the new thing in general, the things we don’t know. Our last project was quite a big one, which was the renovation of the Museum of Decorative Arts, in Paris.” Looking back at their work, both Eloï and Jean agree that they do not have a signature style. Well, not willingly, at least. They seek to make timeless pieces and designs. Trends do not matter for the award-winning duo.

“I think that’s something we do unwillingly. I think that our approach to design is more of a timeless one. We think, in a way, that we try to make objects that are timeless and contemporary.” Some argue that the process of a project’s production is what matters the most. For Eloï and Jean, it’s not about the process, it’s about the tools used to produce.

“I think it is very important to understand how things are made, the tools that make them, the techniques used and so on. And designing for that context. To design and to understand how things are made.”

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH JOANA ASTOLFI

oana Astolfi is an artist, architect and designer who draws visual inspiration from a broad universe of found objects. Porcelain statuettes, miniatures, vintage chairs, lamps, toys, diaries and photographs of people she never met populate and shape her creative vision. Her artworks, installations and window displays are inspired by imperfections, mistakes and a cheeky sense of humour. We started by discussing the artist’s inspirations, which is a rather complex question to answer. Inspirations are something incredibly abstract. What strikes us as awe-inspiring might be something incredibly mundane for someone else. And the artist made it quite clear.

“For me, everything comes from art. Although I am an architect, everything comes from the basis of art, so I always make a very strong connection between art and architecture.”

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW //

“We have two departments, architecture and art. We do interior architecture projects closely linked to shops, restaurants and hotels. We make shop windows, where our main client is Hermès, with whom we have worked with for 5 years.” For Joana, it’s all about concept. She needs to tell a story, her story. It’s all about a narrative, and how to best portray it. It’s like a Triptych: a conjugation between art, architecture and a story, ultimately creating a full painting.

“I always have to tell a story, and it has to be one that is perceptible. The narrative, the concept, the rigour of the project, the execution are all crucial in my projects and so is consistency, risk-taking and making mistakes.” We couldn’t end the conversation without discussing the main challenges that an artist like Joana faces. The artist highlighted two Goliath-like challenges that she usually faces: time and budget. Time, because the Sistine Chapel wasn’t painted in just one night. And budget because you can’t really put a price on an artistic intervention.

It is highly unlikely, to say the least, to speak with an artist about architecture without mentioning art. For Joana, to make an artistic

“The deadline is always a pivotal question. People always ask for projects for yesterday. In architecture people still understand that it is a work that takes some time. But art takes a long time.”

intervention in the midst of an interior architecture project is something unique, and close to the artist’s heart.

“In our interior architecture projects, I can intervene in a transversal way. For example, the artisan participates a lot. Lately, and for a long time, the clients ask us to make artistic interventions in space.” Joana is quite the Jack of all trades. Her studio has two major departments: interior architecture and the artistic one. It might strike you as an expected combination, but the end result is everything but foreseen.

CovetED was also interested to know what type of dream project the firm would like to do, to which Cheryl Eisen responded,

“A boutique hotel, where all of the rooms are unique and have different personalities. I love to mix vintage pieces with new ones, to make things feel real and authentic.” Moreover, a unique aspect about the IMG firm is that 75% of the company employees are women and Eisen even calls her company “Fempire”, as she further explains,

“Something I love about that is that it’s an environment where women can really thrive, feel free to be themselves, to be emotional and whatever it is that we are. I think it really creates a more creative environment for women to feel empowered.” Furthermore, the company has actually won three Stevie Awards for Women in Business, including the Fastest Growing Company of the Year and Female Entrepreneur of the Year, which were a massive honour for them. The designer is often drawn to objects or pieces that really make a statement, from sculpture pieces to shiny metals, as well as massive pieces, everything gold and unique lighting fixtures, as this can clearly be seen in the company’s products. In conclusion, the next steps for the company seem to be moving onto new markets, since that they are growing so much. As of recently, they have started doing a lot of work in Miami and it is an incredible opportunity to expand one’s style, not only because of the characteristics of the city, but also because the houses are enormous there and it will truly allow for the company to diversify itself!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SEBASTIAN HERKNER

Maison et Objet’s Designer of the Year 2019 urrently the head-designer of his studio in Offenbach, a small town near Frankfurt, Sebastian Herkner is the new sounding name in the world of product design. In the midst of celebrating his distinction as Designer of the Year 2019, the designer sat down and talked with us. At 37 years-old, Sebastian describes himself as a really privileged person since he enjoys what he’s doing and can do anything with his passion.

I’m a privileged person in general, I can travel the world.” discloses Herkner.

COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 57.

For the designer, travelling is one of the most important things one can do, because it allows you to understand cultures. “Discovering all senses of a culture is really amazing and that’s also a really huge influence on my work. Becoming a designer wasn’t exactly his childhood dream. Since a young age, he was always a creative person, but he never had the idea of becoming a product designer, since it was never a topic of discussion at school or in the media. “There was fashion, art, culture and painting, but never product design.” It was through a purchase on a flea market that Herkner learned what was product design. The designer was determined to use his skills to create products, so he started right in his home town of Offenbach, where he’s still based. After graduating, he opened his own studio. With a five-person team, the studio does everything from furniture to lighting, accessories and mirrors. It has even spread to tiles and sunglasses now. The designer enjoys the diversity and looks at it as a challenge, always focusing on high-quality products and good materials.

“Our generation is quite privileged thanks to technology, we can access lots of information and we can travel more. But we have a digital life and an analogue life. On the one hand, we have the digital where everything is transparent, and on the other hand, at home, we want to have the quality, like leather, glass, marble. That’s why there has to be a resource for reality, which is important and also part of my design approach.” The designer prides himself on his high-quality products and the work he has done with craftsmen, claiming that he wants “to create companions for our lives”. Herkner also has a really sustainable approach to design and that’s why he focuses on creating long-lasting products, as he further explains,

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW //

“We don’t have the money or the time to produce more waste. We have to take really good care of our resources. Marble is somehow ending one day. It’s really important that designers think responsibly.”

“if you think about the watches from Switzerland, the chocolate from Belgium, the fashion from France, shoes and porcelain from Portugal… This is our European culture and we have to really take care of it. It’s our identity.”

When it comes to types of projects, the designer can’t choose, stating that he enjoys the variety. When working with a new company, his design process is really about getting to know the company itself, their work methods, their DNA. “At the workshops, I really get a lot of inspiration because I see what they are doing.” For Herkner, every project needs to start with dialogue and observation, a collaboration between him and the client, requiring the need for a compromise on both ends. The designer’s style is always evolving, but one thing remains the same is quality while mixing traditional crafts with new technology.

“Dialogue is very important in my work but it’s also a very important message for our generation, to talk to each other, to be curious and open-minded.” The designer sees the influence of traditional craftsmanship in today’s design as a paradox between the digital world and the an-

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CHERYL EISEN

heryl Eisen is the president of Interior Marketing Group, the largest luxury design and real estate marketing firm on the East Coast. For over 10 years, they have been best known for combining interior design and staging characteristics, creating highly curated environments where people envision living on. CovetED had the immense pleasure of talking to Eisen and we picked her brain a bit about the firm’s and her own work methods and aspirations. In regards to favourite projects, Eisen enlightens us that her preferred ones are those that involve a huge open space with double-high ceilings, as she explains,

“I mean, it’s so fun to have a canvas like that and to just come in and do whatever it is I want to do. The beauty of what we do is that we don’t really design for the client all the time, sometimes it’s for the buyer, and this means we can do whatever we want.” IMG’s signature style is incredibly characteristic. They often opt for layered neutral kind of interiors and they also introduce a lot of mirrors in the decor, alongside long sheer drapes and neutral textures placed on top of each other. In addition, the firm’s design process is based on tailoring the design with the client, to create realistic living places that also happen to be beautiful and luxurious. When it comes to staging, they start by identifying what the buyer’s demographic is and then they proceed to tell their story.

When asked what inspires her the most, Eisen mentioned other designers,

“I love seeing what people are doing, it keeps me on my toes. I love seeing new lines of furniture and how they’re used in spaces and new textures and art.” She also gives special attention to Kelly Hoppen, admiring her unique style that exudes an unmatched level of calmness. Being such a prestigious enterprise comes with its challenges, and for IMG, the biggest one is inventory, as Eisen discloses

“We design so many of the high-end homes that are for sale in New York City and they are competing with each other to sell, so we have to make sure that we keep them all unique so that they have different looks. And that’s really challenging because, you know, there’s only so much furniture in the world that you can put together and sort in scenarios.”

COMMERCIAL ASYA SALES GALLERY DESIGN CONCEPT BY PTANG STUDIO LIMITED Located in Jakarta, Indonesia, Asya is the family orientated and warm-hearted development which centres family ancestry as a concept. Various architectural elements trickle and flow through this space, such as lighting and partition features. The numerous spaces are structured with interconnecting components, warm lighting with soft textures throughout, to echo the warmth and sentiment within the areas. These physical details weave and envelop the visitors within comfortable surroundings, reiterating the sense of familial protection and nurture, creating different functional areas of open and enclosed spaces without making it too small. The Reception sculpture is an abstraction of a tree, simulating the concept of lineage. PTang Studio Limited was established back in 1997 and has developed a wide range of projects in Hong Kong, China, Japan, and the UK, from small scale residential to show flat designs, as well as large scale commercial works, such as corporate headquarters and movie launching functions. The studio follows a modest philosophy, creating spaces that bring to clients the most comfortable atmosphere that includes all of their individual preferences. The studio is constantly seeking the finest quality and innovations, developing a fresh and unique style that transcends existing boundaries and widens the horizon of design the visionary future. This all becomes quite evident by looking at the refined interiors of the Asya Sales Gallery Design.

PROJECT //

HOSPITALITY ASCOTT MARUNOUCHI TOKYO BY THE ASCOTT LIMITED Drawing in panoramic views of the city skyline, Ascott Marunouchi Tokyo is conceptualized as both a literal and figurative lens, through which guests can contemplate the dynamic movement and vibrancy of Japan’s metropolitan capital. Inspired by the synergistic relationship between the rapid pace of modernization and the dignified charm of local culture, the design harmonizes vernacular minimalist principles with luxurious modern trappings. A stay at this five-star hotel stands for a unique experience that guarantees guests the best of two different worlds. MEC Design International worked closely with Mr Kian Liew, The Ascott’s Head of Global ID Management, Product & Technical Services to plan and design the property. Liew has 15 years of experience in interior design and his signature style is best defined as understated yet sophisticated, straightforward, elegant and functional with the occasional accents. Balance, light, space and colour, all factor into his design, thus he is able to create interiors with a timeless effect. Clean lines and simple but well-crafted furnishing, with an attention to texture and highest quality materials, are Kian’s essentials. Trees, blossoms, leaves, water and clouds, motifs that epitomize the Japanese philosophy of Zen, adorn the walls and ceilings, while linear elements resonate with the surrounding high-rise architecture. Seemingly disparate elements are employed to achieve a quiet balance, an oasis of serenity amidst the bustle of the thriving metropolis.

COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 65.

The design experience begins as one crosses the threshold from the busy thoroughfare into a ground-floor foyer wrapped in warm and welcoming hues of brown, bronze and soft gold. Entering the lift, panels of brown and bubble-filled blue glass evoke a sense of fluid motion. As one travels upward, the lighting shifts subtly from blue to white, the only indication of movement in the silently ascending vessel, heralding guests’ arrival at the 22nd-floor sky lobby. At the reception area, taking centre stage is an objet d’art that draws from the Japanese ensõ. It was designed by Korean artist Bahk Seong Ghi and this outstanding artwork combines Avantgarde form with earthy charcoal. The ensõ, known traditionally as a circle hand-drawn in an uninhibited brushstroke to express spontaneous freedom of expression, is reinterpreted using suspended fragments of charcoal. Where an ensõ circle is typically either closed or incomplete, in the former case it is done so in order to represent perfection, whereas in the latter it symbolizes the never-ending quest for improvement. Nevertheless, Bahk’s masterpiece allows for multiple perspectives. This union of venerable philosophy and modern innovation characterises the design approach to Ascott Marunouchi Tokyo. In the lounge, Shinnosuke Tojo’s triptych of copper plates highlights calming colours, fluid strokes and deliberate rusting of the metal plate to reflect the passage of time. The artwork’s constantly evolving patina is a perfect allegory for the Japanese concept of ‘Mono No Aware’, or the ephemerality of existence.

The artists who have contributed to the artistic direction of Ascott Marunouchi Tokyo come from a myriad of nationalities, from Korea to Brazil. This diversity does indeed reflect the cosmopolitan character of Tokyo, while all of these artists share solidarity in paying homage to the Japanese minimalist aesthetic. Another pervading theme is the perpetual dialogue between Man and Nature. This theme is deeply ingrained in the local culture and, when it comes to the hotel, it comes into play gently folded into the guest experience. The double-height ceiling lobby unfurls towards a million-dollar view of the city that is framed by lush greenery. In the entire residence, guests can sense a sublime and refreshing aroma of jasmine and tangerine that permeate the air. Furthermore, the subtle shifts in colour and imagery that can be seen throughout the hotel evoke the characteristics of the four seasons - Spring on the 23rd and 24th floors, Summer on the 25th and 26th, Autumn on the 27th and 28th, and Winter on the top floor. The apartments are decked out with a taupe and cream palette, silk Pierre Frey cushions, contemporary fittings and ultra-modern kitchens, complete with all the paraphernalia necessary for a comfortable extended stay. Bellagio marble tiles lather the bathrooms in cream. The ceiling is embellished with abstract photographic prints, creating the impression of gazing through both foliage and skyline. The graphics manipulate the proportions of both elements, blurring the lines between where the buildings end and nature begins.

PROJECT //

RESIDENTIAL 2GETHER CLUB HOUSE BY PTANG STUDIO LIMITED 2GETHER is a luxury residential development set along the south coast of Tuen Mun, with overall panoramic sea views of five bays and convenient transport links with Light Rail and Ferry Port in close proximity. The location and characteristics of the architecture make this residential development an ideal first home for fashionable young professionals with the interior design taking inspiration from the area’s active suburban vibe, creating a living space which is both stylish and dynamic. Through the reception comes the lobby interior styling which accentuates light, structure and earthy neutral tones sprinkled with vibrant splashes of colour, to reiterate the concept of crisp natural living within a contemporary atmosphere. The introduction of geometric and abstract shapes amongst the vertical structures continues the forest canopy look and complements the space by softening the lobby expanse for a comfortable yet cutting-edge neighbourhood spot.

The multi-functional living and dining area is arranged within an open space layout with no solid partitions, however, the large glass wine display case, allows residents to embrace the social space for a range of gatherings to suit communal and more intimate events. The materials and visual language are a continuum of the earthy forest floor with verticals reaching above. The entire communal areas have been designed specifically for the tenants to fully use and view the common spaces as an extension of their own private homes with the aim of creating community pride and ownership.

The library area introduces horizontal profiles to offset the vertical rhythm. This play on configuration between lines with LED strip lighting creates a slick and contemporary space. The gym area intensifies the geometric language of the lobby areas with a vertical screen which runs along the entire length of the gym, composing a strong sense of rhythm for a working leisure environment. The screen extends to the ceiling line and the use of ceiling beams allows the eye to travel towards the light of the large harbour view window which, after all, is an ideal workout backdrop.

STUDENTS DIO BY GARETH SEAH Gareth Seah was the mastermind behind the design of Dio, a couture penthouse in Singapore. At the age of 24, Seah has already had the opportunity to work in high-end prestigious projects, including Luxury Tall-Ships, hotels, private residences, among others. This project covers 200sqm and focuses primarily on clean lines and shapes, layered with inimitable materials that reveal its story and history. From one space to the other, guests can find unique characteristics in each, which becomes rather priceless for the ones who desire it. “Dio” means God in Italy and Seah’s design was influenced by modernist architects and designers such as Le Corbusier, Mies Van Der Rohe and Gio Ponti. With the use of holy grails that were fused together such as marble (Lapicida), wood (Talarico Hardwood), metal and lights, Seah created a modern luxury space like no other. The art of designing with marble, acts as the heart fused with veins inside it that frames an intimate relation between the users and the space. Exotic materials such as specially figured woods and antique boiserie revive a long-lost era and an unparalleled beauty that goes beyond words. The coloured lighting then reflects these materials, rendering a wide spectrum of colours into the space and allowing users to craft their bespoke mood. Last, but certainly not least, are metals and tinted mirrors which ultimately create mass, volume and give expression to the divine tones found across these spaces.

PROJECT // When designing with “Dio” and Couture in mind, it is necessary to fuse natural materials along with aged artefacts, unveiling its limit and beauty throughout. The level of details which stands as the ultimate creative ground produces a sensation of new spectrums that compliments against one another. “Style is eternal, it is the experience within the designed environment that slowly, re-connects us with the joyous moments that happens inside. The qualities that are designed to create a subtle rhythmic transition from one to another presenting an intimate quality between the design and users.” Under the mentorship of Italian renowned Architect Massimo Mercurio, Gareth Seah envisions himself as an architect and interior designer, which will ultimately give him the latitude to design the interior along with an understanding about the exterior surroundings. As you can see by the interiors of “Dio”, his design style is based on re-inventing a new modern and timeless space that redefines an haute and luxurious environment with the use of antique, reclaimed materials fusing with new state of the art present creations. He also believes that design is not simply about creating or designing a space that looks beautiful and purposeful, but rather a space that has its metaphysical qualities, allowing the family to cherish every precious moment with one another.

SMALL APARTMENT VICTORIA VLASOVA INTERIORS Victoria Vlasova Interiors creates spaces with a unique story. The design studio founded by the passionate and talented Moscow-based interior designer, Victoria Vlasova, is best known for finding the balance between comfort and elegance, taking into consideration historical styles and the latest modern trends while also remaining true to each client’s identity. The studio is rather experienced when it comes to decorating extravagant lofts and apartments with complex geometry, country houses, cottages and even townhouses. Their latest project is no exception. The interior studio was responsible for the interior design of a small apartment for a young, creative girl which features all of the characteristics mentioned above and much more. The designer’s goal was to create a beautiful and serene space. The interior design of this small apartment is based on traditional elements and it has a sort of timeless piece of art vibe to it. The living room and kitchen have an open design concept, forming a complete space that has the perfect balance between the calm, creative energy and purposed yet functional details.

In this space, you can discover a patterned rug from the Rug Company, the exquisite tables and the mirrors found above the glamorous sideboard are from Crate & Barrel. The sideboard is by Liberty Home, whereas the dining chairs in black and wooden tones are from Bo Concept and, lastly, the white lamps are from Zara Home. Many of the furniture designs used for the decoration of this residence are actually authored by the studio, including case goods, kitchen furniture, drapes and cushions. In addition, the eclectic use of materials, such as wood, stone, metal, silk, wool and mostly velvet create a sumptuous living space. Furthermore, numerous well-placed mirrors can be seen and this was done in order to expand the walls and amplify the light. The bathroom highlights a minimalist style and a monochrome colour scheme. For this division, Victoria Vlasova opted for neutral tones with a few pops of colour, seen mostly in accessories. The bathroom furniture and fittings are by Villeroy & Boch. As a whole, the design can be upgraded by accenting, without changing the foundation. High baseboards, gypsum stuccowork, oak parquet flooring laid out in a chevron pattern and tall doors with panels custom-designed by the studio itself make this home interior resonate with classical overtones.

BLALOCK HOUSE Designed as a modern and contemporary home, this outstanding 12,000 square-foot Blalock project was a new build where the studio was pretty much involved right from the beginning, even in its architectural phase. The clients of this project were a young couple with two young children. The astonishing house is located on the main street and the couple wanted the front entrance on the side of the lot, being configured in an L-shape. Upon walking inside the front iron door, you step into an entryway that leads you down to the main family room. This room has two living spaces: one for the children and another for the adults. With 21’ ceilings, wood beams, and iron windows that showcase the outdoor living area, this room is the central hub. The adjoining dining room highlights a bolder and more feminine gold chandelier with Swarovski crystals and handmade butterflies. The unique lighting piece gives a lustrous glow to a wooden table that can fit 13 people. The House is also well-appointed with a Polo blue lacquered library, where there’s also a wine room. The kitchen is rather impressive thanks to its oversized plaster vent hood. Through here, you can access the breakfast room, playroom, office, and the back-stair hall, which lead the way to all the six bedrooms of the house, as well as the mother-in-law suite.

SOMERLAND WAY HOUSE Located in the heart of the Memorial neighbourhood, this Somerland Way house features a contemporary, yet welcoming ambience to it. The residence has a total of five bedrooms and, as soon as you look at its exteriors, one is immediately drawn to its massive steel pivot door seen at the helm. According to Talbot Cooley Interiors, the inspiration behind the project was simple. The client wanted a neutral colour palette to be used throughout the entire house, so she would be able to give the spotlight to her art collection. Warm whites and slate greys contrast perfectly with the clean lines of the house, while pops of colour can be found in the works of art and home accessories. Nevertheless, white was the most predominant shade in the house, especially in divisions such as the dining room, where Fine Paints of Europe Lacquer were used to dress the walls. A slate blue marble slab was selected for the waterfall kitchen island, which is also complemented by wood floating shelves and flush slab front cabinets. The back of the house is lined up by floor to ceiling windows which provide plenty of natural light, as well as sweeping views of the outdoor living area, pool and garden, thus creating a deep connection between indoors and outdoors. The living room is undoubtedly the main area of this glamorous home. 14’ ceilings, a floor to ceiling concrete fireplace and a quartzite bar with a custom-made iron floating shelf are some of the most impressive design features seen in this area. In addition, a floating staircase with glass leads the way to the second floor and overlooks this main living area.

SAULA MARINA, SOFA JAVIER MARISCAL

LIQUEFY EXTENSION BY PATRICIA URQUIOLA

Mariscal’s visual heritage is drawn from the world of comic books, which he freely admits to drawing inspiration from. Alessandra, Eulalia Perez and Saula Marina seem to have stepped out of the pages of some underground comic, with which they share the same irony, bordering on sarcasm, and a playful approach to contemporary life. Nonconformist, libertarian, post-modern: Mariscal designs the storyboard for a tale told from the perspective of a teenager, where experience always comes before meaning. The desire for roundness, overlapping and amorous couplings of bodies and forms, release the pieces from the normal passing of time into another place, a world which is also our own.

HOTEL DE RUSSIE ROME, ITALY

Rome, one of the most requested destinations for those who love history, the capital of an ancient empire that contributed to modern language, religion, politics, art, literature, architecture and engineering and so on. It is one of the most privileged cities with architectural patrimony and where the sense of place makes more sense than any other city in the world. As we use to say in Rome, do as the Romans do, the Rocco Forte family took this concept of sense of place as their philosophy, and that’s what turns their hotel chain so unique. They started the company in 1996 and nowadays have 14 hotels all over the world, including in Italy, the UK, Belgium, Berlin, Germany, Russia, Saudi Arabia and China.

All of them are the result of a delicate balance between hard work and passion and the Hotel de Russie in Rome is no exception! In 1917, the French poet Jean Cocteau dubbed this hotel as the “Paradise on earth” and the accolade still stands today. Located in the heart of Rome, between the most picturesque piazzas of the city, Piazza di Spagna and Piazza del Popolo, Hotel de Russie is one of the Eternal City´s most prestigious luxury hotels. Their unforgettable concept involves us in the city concept and philosophy, promoting a unique sense of exclusivity and uniqueness. Composed of several types of suites that provide unique moments, like the presidential and terrace suites that highlight warm colours combined with style and comfort. Generous in size and decorated with feature accents inspired by the city’s antique history, the elegant interiors include sculpture and bas relief, photography and vibrant cushions made with lavish Zimmer + Rohde fabric, and chic furnishings from Porada and Porta Romana. Effortlessly blending classical influences and contemporary design, as envisioned by Olga Polizzi and architect Tommaso Ziffer, the five-star Hotel is comprised of 120 rooms and suites that exemplify luxurious Roman living and offer sweeping views of the historic city streets. Take, for example, the Valadier suite which is beautifully appointed and decorated in a contemporary yet classic style with breathtaking views. The Picasso Suite was named after the celebrated artist who stayed there for several months in 1917. The Picasso Suite pays homage to its namesake through its expressive, elegant decor. It is composed of fine Italian furniture from Citterio and Meridiani. The Popolo Suite has one of the most exclusive views in the city. It elegantly marries accents from Rome’s classical and contemporary heritage while antique wall reliefs and sculpture are displayed alongside a curated collection of bespoke rugs, midcentury furniture, and a colour palette that echoes Papal Rome. However, one of the most sought-after suites is the Nijinsky suite that makes you feel right at home! It is both playful and refined. The stunning Carrara marble bathroom, adorned with Bisazza mosaics makes you feel like you are in a Roman bath. As a whole, every detail has been carefully thought out! The sense of refinement and elegance are undoubtedly the points that best define the experience at Hotel de Russie.

BACCARAT HOTEL NEW YORK, USA

It only takes a few seconds when stepping inside this incredible hotel for one to immediately feel the luxury state of living, the perfect combination of the noble heritage and the perfect craft of the legendary French crystal company with a modern flair and elements. At the ground-floor entrance, we were welcomed warmly by a fourfoot-tall dual-sided fireplace paying homage to Baccarat’s furnaces, which are stoked 24 hours a day to produce the world’s most coveted crystal. Behind the entrance, a wall is formed with nearly 2,000 Harcourt glasses, the brand’s most iconic crystal piece. Laid horizontally and illuminated with LED lights, the installation subtly flickers and flashes throughout the day. After being hosted by the nicest Concierge, we were invited to meet one of the 114 sanctuary-like guest rooms and suites. When arriving at our room, it was crystal clear that we had arrived at Baccarat’s crown jewel. This room was designed like a pied-àTerre and we felt at home with the delicious delights from French gourmet house Ladurée and a custom desk, sconces and table lamps by Baccarat. This suite conjures the alchemy of modern day in Paris through a Baccarat lens. Luxurious artistry gives way to beauty beyond measure. All the amenities were charming and, we must say, we slept like babies that magic night. This was the Baccarat experience as a luxe personal escape. The Afternoon tea experience reaches new heights with a Tea Sommelier offering a special pairing of tea by Mariage Freres and culinary delights invented to complement the experience. Introduced first with King Louis XV Tea and Prince of Wales Tea, the journey through the senses is now exploring Russia with the Tsar Nicholas tea, dubbed Best Tea by Bloomberg.

HOTELS WE COVET // Best described as A Caviar Tea for Two at Tsarskoye Selo, this over-the-top experience starts with an amuse-bouche of sable, kohlrabi, and baby beets. It wouldn’t be Russian-inspired without Tsar Imperial Ossetra caviar, from the famous French Maison Petrossian on tea-infused Blinis. After an Intermezzo of Stoli Kvass Sorbet infused with Rooibos Tea with Macerated Raisins, the dessert can only be Lavender Shortbreads and Earl Grey Caramels served with Lung Ching Imperial Green Tea and Krug Grand Cuvée. It’s dinner time and we couldn’t leave without tasting the elegant French-inspired culinary of Chef Gabriel Kreuther in the stunning crystal clad surroundings of The Grand Salon. “The Baccarat Hotel takes an elegant and sophisticated approach to hospitality that has similarly defined my career and my restaurant—prioritizing high-quality ingredients, fine craftsmanship and beautiful presentation,” he says. “I’m proud to partner with a brand so closely aligned with my Alsatian roots and I am delighted by the opportunity to reinvigorate the culinary program with classic French technique and fine dining ideals that will elevate the Baccarat guest experience.” It did in fact elevate our experience.

Visually stunning with a dose of French “je ne sais quoi,” the Grand Salon is inherently majestic - a quality well-suited for any celebration, for a cocktail or a cosy and memorable dinner. The waiter that was attending us that evening was the most diligent and nice person. As he served us the most delicious dishes accompanied by the best wines, he told us so much about the Grand Salon and the Petit Salone: The Grand Salon’s 35-foot ceiling and plush, platinum-and-champagne-hued palette creates an incredibly glamorous backdrop for all-day lounging, while the Petit Salon’s smoked oak walls and emerald green velvet settees beckon guests desiring a more private and tranquil environment. At The Bar, you can get a cocktail that costs $450. Most of the other cocktails cost around $26 - but this should still give you a good idea of what kind of place this is. Panelled in silver-leafed boiserie and sitting in an open alcove off the Grand Salon, the book-lined library offers a semi-secluded space for intimate celebrations and social gatherings of all kinds, from Champagne toasts to late-night rendezvous, birthday brunches to mid-afternoon meetings complete with Mariage Frères. If you have a few days off in the City that never sleeps, ride around New York City in style. Luxury house car service is available to guests for à propos jaunts through Manhattan—anywhere within 15 blocks of the hotel.

In addition to the hotel’s 114 luxurious guest rooms, the sleek skyscraper features a separate residential lobby and 60 elegant residences designed by interiors master Tony Ingrao.

STYLE ICONS //

THE KAISER’S FAREWELL TO ARMS February 19, 2019. The world will always reminisce this date with sorrow as Karl Lagerfeld tested the biological notion of immortality. But there’s a thing about immortality that completely transcends the concept of living beings. Immortality per se is not something of biological nature, at least for us, humans. It doesn’t really matter if we live up to 20, 50, 100 years old. Immortality lies upon our legacy. We can argue that Michelangelo, DaVinci, Botticelli, Bach and Julius Caesar are in fact immortal. Although they have overstayed their time amongst us, mere mortals, their story is told every day, with the hopes of inspiring in achieving something beyond the world’s expectations. We live in a generation that desperately craves for role models, and Karl Otto Lagerfeld, ladies and gentlemen, lived on to carry that burden like Sisyphus carried the boulder up the mountain.

HIS FIRST LOVE Chanel played a quintessential role in Lagerfeld’s life, but the designer wasn’t interested in a monogamous marriage with the French brand. In fact, his longest love affair was in Rome. For 56 years Karl has been the creative director for Fendi, creating iconic designs such as the Baguette bag or the double F logo. The Kaiser ’s influence was so big that, in 2018, with his Fendi Logomania Collection, he helped Fila get back on its feet by incorporating the Italian sports brands’ logo in the designs. Despite the global commotion around the use of fur and leather in the fashion industry, Karl always stayed true to the brand’s vision and genesis, as Fendi was originally created as being a longlasting leather and fur brand.

COVETED MAGAZINE PAGE 113.

THE FRENCH MISTRESS Karl once said he’s like a fashion nymphomaniac who can never achieve an orgasm. This overachieving mentality is what kept the uber-talented designer for 36 years in Chanel. He wasn’t there to do what Coco Chanel did, Karl was there to do what Coco Chanel would do. And that played a key role in Chanel’s success. Now, as he rises up the Fashion Olympus to meet his predecessor, he looks upon his right hand Virginie Viard as she fills up Karl’s creative shoes in the French fashion powerhouse. As remarkable as it sounds, the name Karl Lagerfeld became sounder than the name Chanel. Whoever was buying Chanel wasn’t because it was Chanel, but because it was designed by the Kaiser. The monumental stages he created for the shows became the zenith of his creativity, like when he turned the emblematic Grand Palais in Paris into Germany’s Black Forest for the Fall/Winter 2018 Show.

THE MUSES FLORENCE WELCH Florence Welch admits that she didn’t quite understand what she was getting herself into when Karl Lagerfeld asked her to star in his Spring/Summer 2012 aquatic-inspired Chanel show, where she sang live from a giant shell. The pair first met following her performance at a party hosted by the label.

STYLE ICONS //

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY The British actress’ ethereal, feminine style made her perfect for Chanel. Although she is best known for her appearances in films including the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, “Pride & Prejudice” and “The Imitation Game”, Keira is also a regular in the Chanel front row. She became the face of Chanel perfume Coco Mademoiselle in 2006 and played Coco Chanel in Lagerfeld’s film “Once Upon a Time”. Lagerfeld himself applauded her portrayal of Coco Chanel’s innovative spirit. Recently, Keira got married in a short Chanel wedding dress and ballet flats, kicking of a trend for non-traditional and rewearable wedding looks.

LINDA EVANGELISTA She is one of the original supermodels and perhaps the most recognizable, having become an icon of the 1990s. Linda and Karl began working together in 1985 and she has continued to inspire him with her statement-making style and constant changes to her look. Linda was Chanel’s original runway bride, taking to the haute couture runway in 2003 in a stunning bridal gown. Mr. Lagerfeld chose her as the face of Chanel eyewear in 2012 and recently shot her with his adorable pet cat, Choupette.

INES DE LA FRESSANGE The French aristocrat and fashion legend was one of Lagerfeld’s first muses. Her effortless chic and infectious smile helped her become the first model in the 1980s to sign an exclusive contract with Chanel. Since her modelling heyday, she has expanded to become a prolific designer and recently launched a blog chronicling her uniquely French style. Though Ines and Lagerfeld parted ways in 1989, they reunited in 2011 and she appeared in Chanel’s S/S11 show.

MILAN MEN’S FASHION WEEK Fall/Winter 19/20 Milan has always played an utmost important role in Europe. Ever since its establishment, the Drinkable city has been the centre stage, not only regarding geopolitical reasons but also for a rather natural bias to host important cultural events. After all, it is the birthplace of legends such as Leonardo DaVinci and Giuseppe Verdi. It would only be natural that the historic transalpine city became the world’s fashion capital. There’s absolutely no better thing to do in the city than strolling down the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, checking Prada’s latest collection while listening to the good old La Traviata. Well, except if you go to the prestigious Milan Fashion Week, of course. The event is hosted by the Camera Nazionale Della Moda Italiana (The National Chamber for Italian Fashion), which is the nonprofit making Association which disciplines, co-ordinates and promotes the development of Italian Fashion. The Association represents all the highest cultural values of Italian Fashion. It aims to protect, coordinate and strengthen its image, both in Italy and abroad. Every new season, the fashion world’s spotlight shines upon this magical Italian city, and it shines back with the latest trends, where designers star and models gleam. From Fendi to Givenchy, men’s fashion world just got rocked by a trendy hurricane.

FENDI “Dualism in the DNA of Fendi, under every form,” says Silvia Venturini Fendi, Creative Director for menswear. The Fendi Men’s Fall/Winter 2019-2020 Collection from the Roman fashion house is the fruit of her collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld. Dualism is expressed in a swirling futurism and classicism for silhouettes in a colour palette dominated by black, beige and brown, heightened by accents of red and electric blue. Fendi’s legendary Baguette bag makes its debut for men in cross-body, hand-carried and belt bag versions. Cordovan and patent leather shoes echo Karl Lagerfeld’s signature with Cuban heels. The show culminated on a powerful note with a performance by Chinese singer Jackson Wang, the new Fendi ambassador in China.

FASHION //

GIVENCHY In conjunction with Paris Fashion Week, Givenchy presented the men’s looks for its Fall-Winter 2019/2020 collection. This is Clare Waight Keller’s first collection for men since she became creative director for the Maison. With a suite of colour-blocked suits and embroidered leather pieces, she contrasted volumes, proposing both sleek and generous shapes. The collection was a nod to the maverick individualism of the Nineties, recast with a modern vision for a versatile and richly contrasted wardrobe.

LOUIS VUITTON For his second runway show as Artistic Director for Louis Vuitton Men’s collections, Virgil Abloh paid homage to pop megastar, Michael Jackson, transforming the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris into a cityscape reminiscent of New York in the 1980s. Less than a year after joining Louis Vuitton, the menswear designer continues to reinvent the spirit of the luxury fashion brand, presenting his vision of the men’s wardrobe for Fall-Winter 2019/2020. His take is equal parts classic chic and streetwear, with the signature Monogram on bags joined by oversize volumes and neon colours. Virgil Abloh also revisited Michael Jackson’s emblematic style with white shirts, sparkly gloves and prints of the artist’s likeness.

DIOR Echoing Christian Dior’s love of art and the artistic world, Dior Men’s Artistic Director Kim Jones collaborated with contemporary visual artist Raymond Pettibon to articulate the identity of the men’s wardrobe for the Dior Fall-Winter 2019/2020 collection. The looks presented by Kim Jones project the codes of the Dior heritage through a new prism. Animalier prints and pastel colours are combined with draping and precious haute couture materials. Moreover, exquisite accessories revisit the iconic Dior “Saddle” bag with new iterations in nylon or mink, worn cross-body style. The collection was presented as a series of tableaux vivants along a 76-meter-long moving walkway, the immobile poses of the models referencing both a couture salon show of the past and antique sculptures.

LOEWE For his first-ever men’s runway show since joining Loewe in 2013, Jonathan Anderson celebrates Loewe’s craftsmanship in unexpected ways, imagining a wardrobe where the worlds of sartorial tradition and team sports collide. Set against the backdrop of a sculpture by the German artist Franz Erhard Walther, the runway show took place in the Maison de l’UNESCO in Paris. Jonathan Anderson sent out elongated silhouettes with incongruous effects. Fitted shearling jackets are superposed over extra-large knits and extended shirt sleeves peek from the cuffs of two-tone jackets. The collection also included audacious pieces such as a colourful printed satin shirt featuring Marilyn Monroe.
