OUR TERRITORIAL VISION
WHY JOIN The Salvation Army?
Being a Christian is being a member of a community, part of a family . Christians need each other: to discover Jesus in each other, to share Jesus with each other . There is only one Church, made up of all those who acknowledge Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord But that one Church is expressed in many local fellowships, including The Salvation Army
So, why join The Salvation Army? Here are four reasons to consider:
1 . You believe that God raised up The Salvation Army . The founders of the Army were human and imperfect . So are its present officers and soldiers! But the Army is God’s idea, raised up by him to serve his purposes .
2 . You believe in the truth of what the Army teaches . We proclaim Jesus as Savior of the world, and that all who trust him will be saved We believe that all Christians can be – must be – holy people through the grace of God .
3 . You believe in the Army’s ministry and mission . Preaching the gospel and practical caring must go hand
in hand William Booth, the founder of The Salvation Army, said that there is no point in telling a hungry man about the love of God unless you first demonstrate God’s love by feeding him .
4 . You believe that God wants you to be a soldier in the Army . God leads people into the Army in many different ways:
• Some people grow up in an Army family;
• Some people are attracted through a particular Army activity;
• Some people see the Army on the street where they live;
• Some people see the Army on television;
• Some people are invited to an Army meeting;
• Some people are Christians before they come to the Army;
• Some people find Jesus Christ through the Army .
However God has led you to this point, you must be sure that becoming a soldier is his will for you
Adapted from Battle Orders: Salvation Army Soldiership Chick Yuill, The Salvation Army United Kingdom Territory, 1989
“Salvationists are members of the one body of Christ . We share common ground with the universal Church while manifesting our own characteristics As one particular expression of the Church, The Salvation Army participates with other Christian denominations and congregations in mission and ministry . We are part of the one, universal Church .
The Corps is The Salvation Army’s local congregation It is a concrete expression of the Church . It has its own ways of worshipping, training and serving, based on the teaching of the Bible, the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the nature of its mission . But its purpose is consistent with the calling of the one, universal Church . Its three key strengths are its evangelistic zeal, its commitment to holiness and its strong community outreach .”
— Salvation Story
UNITED BY THE LOVE OF GOD AND MAN
The Salvation Army was founded as an evangelical organization dedicated to bringing people into a meaningful relationship with God through Christ . Its doctrinal basis is that of the Wesleyan-Arminian tradition . It is composed of persons who are united by the love of God and man, and who share the common purpose of bringing others to Jesus Christ .
Raised up by God to deliver the Good News message of hope and life through Jesus Christ, we are available and ready to speak up and speak out in His name . The word salvation indicates the overall purpose of the organization – to motivate all people to embrace the salvation provided to them in Christ
Come, Join Our Army
COME, join our Army, to battle we go, Jesus will help us to conquer the foe; Fighting for right and opposing the wrong, The Salvation Army is marching along
Marching along, marching along, The Salvation Army is marching along; Soldiers of Jesus, be valiant and strong; The Salvation Army is marching along.
Come, join our Army, the foe must be driven; To Jesus, our Captain, the world shall be given; Foes may surround us,
We are “roll up your sleeves and get to work” kind of people . The word army indicates that the organization is a fighting force, constantly at war with the powers of evil . Battles are effectively waged through an integrated ministry that gives attention to both body and spirit . It is a total ministry for the total person .
The open doors for compassionate service are abundant; the opportunities for us to lead people into a personal relationship with a loving God are endless
What can YOU do? Come, join our Army! and then invite someone else to join, too!
We’ll press through the throng; The Salvation Army is marching along .
Come, join our Army, the foe we defy, True to our colors, we’ll fight till we die; Saved from all sin is our war cry and song; The Salvation Army is marching along
Come, join our Army, and do not delay, The time for enlisting is passing away; Fierce is the battle, but victory will come; The Salvation Army is marching along .

HISTORY & STRUCTURE of The Salvation Army
In
1865,William
Booth, an ordained Methodist minister, aided by his wife Catherine, formed an evangelical group dedicated to preaching among the unchurched people living in the midst of appalling poverty in London, England
Booth’s ministry recognized the interdependence of material, emotional and spiritual needs . In addition to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, Booth became involved in the feeding and shelter of the hungry and homeless and in rehabilitation of alcoholics .
Booth and his followers, originally known as The Christian Mission, became The Salvation Army in 1878, when that organization evolved on a quasi-military pattern . Booth became “the General” and officers’ ranks were given to his ministers .
The Salvation Army has functioned successfully within that unusual structure for more than a century . As of 2018 its outreach has been expanded to include over 130 countries and the Gospel is preached by its officers in 175 languages .
The basic social services programs developed by William Booth have remained an outward visible expression of the Army’s strong religious principles . In addition, new programs that address contemporary needs have been established . Among these are disaster relief services, day care centers, summer camps, holiday assistance, services for the aging, AIDS education and residential services, medical facilities, shelters for battered women and children, family and career counseling, vocational training,
correctional services, and substance abuse rehabilitation
The General, with headquarters in London, is the international leader of The Salvation Army In the United States, the functions of The Salvation Army are coordinated by the national commander, whose office is at the national headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia
For administrative purposes, the nation is divided into four territories: the Central with headquarters in Des Plaines, Illinois, the Eastern with headquarters in West Nyack, New York, the Southern with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, and the Western with headquarters in Rancho Palos Verdes, California . Each territory is under the leadership of a territorial commander
Territories are made up of units known as divisions . There are 40 in the United States and each is headed by a divisional commander . Divisions consist of corps centers for worship and service, which are the basic units of The Salvation Army, and various specialized centers . The functions of each corps include religious and social services which are adapted to local needs . Each corps is under the supervision of a corps officer .
Salvation Army fund-raising campaigns are conducted on a local and regional basis . There is no fund-raising at the national level . The normal sources of funds are the traditional Christmas kettle campaign, government contracts, direct-mail program, corporate and foundation gifts and planned giving . In many areas, The Salvation Army is a member agency of local affiliates of
the United Way of America where such affiliation has proven to be beneficial to The Salvation Army .
Nationwide uniformity of policy is the responsibility of the Commissioners’ Conference, whose membership includes the national leaders, the territorial leaders, the national chief secretary and the four territorial chief secretaries . Standing commissions devise and evaluate strategic initiatives to further the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army and then make recommendations to the Commissioners’ Conference .
Advisory organizations, comprised of representative community, corporate and civic leaders, perform a valuable service by providing advice and acting as liaisons between The Salvation Army and the community . The Advisory organizations interpret community needs to The Salvation Army and facilitate the development of resources, enabling The Salvation Army to respond to critical community needs A national advisory board makes its recommendations to the Commissioners’ Conference .
“The great message of the Army of the past to the Army of the future is this: That The Salvation Army exists for the whole world . ”
—General Bramwell Booth
The Salvation Army is a participating member in various religious and human services associations, coalitions
and conferences having similar principles and practices .
Legally, each of the four Salvation Army territories in the United States functions as a tax-exempt corporation with the national commander as Chairperson of the Board .
The Salvation Army’s membership consists of adherents, soldiers and officers . Adherents are persons who have elected not to be enrolled as soldiers but consider The Salvation Army to be their place of worship . Soldiers are persons who have signed a declaration of faith and practice known as A Soldier’s Covenant, and worship and serve through a local corps . Officers are the clergy of The Salvation Army . They have either completed training as cadets or auxiliary captains and have been ordained and commissioned to officership . All officers are engaged in continuing education .
With its Christian heritage and motivation, The Salvation Army continues its unique service to all people in the name of Christ .

WHAT WE BELIEVE 11
MISSION STATEMENT The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in his name without discrimination.
From the beginnings of The Salvation Army in 1865 as the East London Revival Societ y to the present , there has always been a defiinite creed to which the movement’s members have subscribed. The first printed document of this kind was issued by the East London Christian Revival Societ y in 1866 or 1867 (the precise date is not known) This included seven ar ticles of faith and a five -point bond of agreement : a “creed” to believe and a “code of conduct” to follow.
Since that time, a series of Handbooks of Doctrine have sought to present doctrine in ways that will help people to understand the tenets of faith that Salvationists hold true.

WE BELIEVE that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and that they only constitute the Divine rule of Christian faith and practice.
WE BELIEVE that there is only one God, who is infinitely perfect, the Creator, Preser ver and Governor of all things, and who is the only proper object of religious worship
WE BELIEVE that there are three persons in the Godhead—the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, undivided in essence and co-equal in power and glor y
WE BELIEVE that in the person of Jesus Christ the Divine and human natures are united, so that He is truly and properly God and truly and properly man
WE BELIEVE that our rst parents were created in a state of innocency, but by their disobedience they lost their purity and happiness, and that in consequence of their fall all men have become sinners, totally depraved, and as such are justly exposed to the wrath of God.
WE BELIEVE that the Lord Jesus Christ has by His su ering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved
WE BELIEVE that repentance towards God, faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and regeneration by the Holy Spirit are necessar y to salvation
WE BELIEVE that we are justified by grace through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and that he that believeth hath the witness in himself
WE BELIEVE that continuance in a state of salvation depends upon continued obedient faith in Christ
WE BELIEVE that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sancti ed, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

OUR VISION
THE SALVATION ARMY WESTERN TERRITORY MINISTRY VISION & FOCUS
“CHRIST AND HIM CRUCIFIED”
“The strength of this Army does not lie in education or skills or abilities. Our power is not found in financial resources, good public relations, or beautiful facilities. It’s not even the consequence of relevant social programs. The power of our Army lies in the degree to which we are committed to the gospel itself. So it’s not about you. And it’s not about me. And it’s not even about us. It’s about Christ and Him crucified. Christ, and Him crucified!”
Commissioner Kenneth G. Hodder
HEART – OUR COVENANTS
• First, to preserve its unique role within the Body of Christ, the Territory is strengthening its internal focus and systems, i .e ., those beliefs, practices, and standards that make it an “Army of God .”
• I believe it will be critical for us as a Territory to renew our covenants Let us call upon our people, young and old, to go back to that sacred moment when they entered into a fuller relationship with God based upon their encounter with His goodness and grace It was a moment in which, in response to God’s promise, they sought to fulfill His will . It was a moment of covenant, and to remind ourselves of what that means every day therefore seems to me to be a proper starting point .
• Focus: Salvation, Soldiership and Spiritual Formation . Senior and Junior Soldiers’ Day of Renewal, commitment to Christ, personal devotions and Bible study, worship emphasis and distinctions . . . Love!
HEALTH – OUR CONDITION
• Second, it is broadening the extent to which individuals and groups, both within and outside its ranks, contribute to its development After all, Salvationists and nonSalvationists alike must be encouraged to see the organization as their Salvation Army
• Consistent with what we have already initiated in our efforts to increase the level of volunteer involvement in our kettle campaign and build Echelon groups and Advisory Boards across the Territory, let us call upon all our people to be fully engaged Now, I mean this both
in the sense of engagement with each other and in terms of our engagement with the community at large . As to the first, let’s give greater prominence to the powerful simplicity of testimony, and let’s make it common once again for Salvationists to ask one another, “How is it with your soul?”
• Focus: Life in Christ, Life in the Corps and Life in our Community Corporate and personal assessment (internal & external), Biblical literacy, leadership training, evangelism and outreach Joy!
HOLINESS – OUR CHARACTER
• And third, consistent with the Salvationist tradition of innovation and experimentation, the Territory is actively identifying new avenues of ministry that will, at the margin, produce further growth for the Kingdom of God .
• I suggest that Christ and Him crucified is a vision that makes it essential for us to challenge our people to greater levels of stewardship – time, talent, and treasure . Not everyone will have the opportunity to participate in discussions about budgets, but they can all decide whether or not they’ve been faithful in tithing, in supporting the outreach and discipleship programs of the corps, and in considering what future God may have in mind for them
• Focus: Ministry Development, Mission Integration and Membership Involvement . Holiness teaching, holy living and Harvest Initiatives . Purpose, passion, people Peace!

SAVING SOULS
“We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has, by his suffering and death, made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved ” Salvation Army Doctrine #6
The central word of the name of this 21st century fighting force for the Lord is salvation! It’s what we’re all about Salvation Army soldiers know that they are saved – to save! Every soldier is an individual agent of the Lord Jesus, and in signing the Soldier’s Covenant commits himself to win new people for Christ .
William Booth charged early day Salvationists to “go for souls – and go for the worst .” His primary passion was for people . When we, The Salvation Army, look at the physical, geographic world spinning in space, we have always seen and still see people who need the chance to hear the Good News of a Heavenly Father who created them and loves them with all his heart!
“To save a soul is better than to command an army, to win a battle, to rule an empire or to sit upon a throne . ”
—Samuel Logan Brengle, The Way of Holiness
We are passionate people and we are passionate about people; we love what we do and we love the people we serve It is one of the hallmarks of our service and our ministry .
We’re an Army Fighting for a Glorious King
We’re an Army fighting for a glorious king; We will make the world with hallelujahs ring; With victorious voices we will ever sing:
There’s salvation for the world .
For the world, for the world, Jesus died, Jesus died, For the world, for the world, There is room in Jesus’ side
All the world to save, to battle we will go, And we ever will our colors boldly show, With a trumpet voice we’ll let the millions know
There’s salvation for the world .
We’re an Army brave, arrayed in armor bright; We will turn the world from darkness into light; As we march along We’ll shout with all our might: There’s salvation for the world .
We’re an Army saved, By Blood and Fire made strong; And with righteousness We mean to conquer wrong; This shall be our universal battle song: There’s salvation for the world
William James Pearson (1832-92) Salvation Army Songbook #940
What Does SALVATION Mean?
There’s something strange about the human race! People are capable of doing a great deal of good and, apparently, terrible evil . What’s the explanation?
Is evil just the growing pains of the human race? Or is evil something that can be cured by proper education or better living conditions? Not according to the Bible .
The first few chapters of Genesis explain the truth about all of us Read Genesis 1:26-30 . We are made in the image of God, to enjoy fellowship with him and to care for his world But we have all gone wrong, we are all sinners . Through our disobedience and pride we have become alienated from God and from each other Read Genesis 3 .
The rest of the Bible makes it clear that what happened in the Garden of Eden is not just the story of Adam and Eve . It’s the truth about all of us . Read Romans 7:15-25 . We seem powerless to help ourselves So, what can be done?
Only God can deal with our sin . But since he is pure and good and holy he cannot simply say that sin doesn’t matter – clearly it does matter .
God has done something about our sin Through Jesus he has made an atonement – literally “at-one-ment .” He has made us “at-one” with himself . He has reconciled sinful people to himself The Bible insists that the death of Jesus is the answer to our sin
Through Jesus, God does for us what we could never do for ourselves . The death of Jesus Christ is:
• A demonstration of God’s love Read Romans 5:8 . Through the death of Jesus, God is saying, “Although you are sinner, I still love you enough to die for you ”
• A ransom . Read John 8:34 and Mark 10:45 . We are slaves to sin, we cannot free ourselves Jesus pays the price of our freedom by his death on the cross .
• A sacrifice . Read 1 John 2:2 . In Old Testament time, the death of an animal was a symbolic way of offering your life back to God to atone for sins . Jesus is the perfect sacrifice . He gives himself up fully to God, even to the point of death on a cross
• A substitute . Read Isaiah 53: 4-6 Through Jesus, God himself carries the pain and punishment of our sins
• A victory over evil Read Colossians 2:15 The history of mankind is one long, sorry tale of our defeat by evil . But Jesus, on the cross, faced evil at its worst and went on loving and forgiving . He completely defeated the powers of evil .
Adapted from Battle Orders: Salvation Army Soldiership Chick Yuill, The Salvation Army, United Kingdom Territory, 1989
“There are those who tell us that the hope of The Salvation Army for the future is in its young people . I do not agree with that . The hope of the Army is in the penitent-form . As soon as that goes out of use we go out . The sign of the finger of God on the mercy seat is the crowning glory of God’s favor on The Salvation Army . The primary aim of Salvationists…must be the bringing of sinners to the mercy seat . Every meeting held, every program presented, every contact made must be a means to this end – the salvation of souls . ” —General Albert Orsborn

Admit that you are a sinner . You’re not alone – “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God .” (Romans 3:23)
Believe in Jesus . The Bible says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved ” (Acts 16:31) Put your faith in Jesus and you will be saved!
Commit your life to Christ If you are ready to turn your life over to Jesus, pray a prayer like this: Lord Jesus, I admit that I’m a sinner I know there is nothing I can do to get rid of my sin Forgive me and take away my sin . Come into my life and make me a brand-new person . Help me to follow You and learn more about You I give my life to You Amen

GROWING SAINTS
The Salvation Army is a vibrant church community of Christ-followers who believe that the best way to change the world is by creating lasting change for good in the lives of individuals . We believe that physical, social and spiritual transformation is possible . The S’s on our uniform are a continual reminder that we are saved and sanctified . Salvation releases us from the guilt and weight of our sinful past Sanctification is the beginning of a life of holiness .
Holy living is a journey, a continuum of experience which intersects with all that life can bring . It’s about meeting life head on and choosing to respond in a Christlike manner It’s building our lives on eternal Biblical truths It’s living in the midst of imperfect believers, and allowing the refining of our souls through the give and take with others It’s responding with instant obedience to the Holy Spirit’s leading It’s developing an intimate relationship with God so that daily we become more like Christ, from the inside out .
“We believe that it is the privilege of all believers to be wholly sanctified, and that their whole spirit and soul and body may be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ .”
—Salvation Army Doctrine #10
“This is what holy living means –the dedication of as much as I possess to as much as I know of the will of God for me . And far from this total response cramping any man’s style, it ennobles him who makes it and glorifies the God whose service is always perfect freedom . ”
—Frederick Coutts, Essentials of Christian Experience
The Privilege of Holiness
Here are six pointers to holiness – six guidelines for the good life . And they are all from the Bible!
1
Discover what God wants Read 1 Peter 1:15-16 . It is God’s will that we should be holy “Holy” is the word the Bible uses to describe God’s own character . Jesus shows us what God is like . God wants us to be like Jesus!
2
Know who you are . Read Philippians 1:1 . The letters in the New Testament are addressed to “the saints ” All Christians! You are a saint! We are separated for God’s use and filled with his Spirit
3
Take what you’re given Read Ephesians 4:22-24 We are all potential saints God has given us the power for holy living We need to make a start in the holy life We need to put off the old life with its sinful habits, and we need to put on the new way of life . We need to take our saintliness seriously!
4 Be what you are Read Philippians 3:12-14 . When we claim God’s power for holy living, that is just a start . Like a successful athlete we must keep going . We must cooperate with the Holy Spirit . We must find strength in prayer and Bible study, and aim to be more and more like Jesus
5 Share what you’ve got Read Ephesians 4: 7, 11-13 . We don’t live the life of holiness on our own . As part of a Christian family we help each other to be holy . God gives us all different gifts . As we share those gifts we build each other up
6
Look where you’re going Read 1 Thessalonians 5:2324 Christians look forward to the coming of Jesus He will complete the work of holiness in us . Then we will really be like him and reflect his image .
Adapted from Battle Orders: Salvation Army Soldiership Chick Yuill, The Salvation Army United Kingdom Territory, 1989
“For the Salvationist, worship is bound up inextricably with life, the whole of life, and not just that part of it which is associated with obviously religious activities . ” —Fred Brown, The Salvationist

Redwoods is an approach to young adult ministry that emphasizes discipleship through community . Community is achieved through Redwood Group gatherings and discipleship happens through group leadership, group dialog, and the curriculum Redwood Groups choose to study together .

Music & Worship Arts
Music has an especially long history in The Salvation Army . Brass bands have been a part of worship settings, open airs (public evangelical meetings), Christmas caroling, and marches around the city for decades, and they continue to provide a unique musical legacy and fellowship amongst musicians .
Over the years, The Salvation Army has expanded its musical and artistic forms of expression as a response to the vibrancy and diversity seen throughout our corps These have included singing groups (songsters, singing companies, and youth choruses), dance, and drama
Many local corps provide weekly music instruction and/ or rehearsals to both children and adults, and weeklong regional summer music and arts camps also provide training and discipleship .
All Salvation Army musicians and artists volunteer their time and talents to service the local corps and the community, volunteering at various community outreach events and participating in worship services . Regardless of the style of creative expression, soldiers are encouraged to give their gifts and skills as a love offering to God and to edify the church body
One Army
Corps Worship
Traditional Sunday morning worship – the Holiness meeting – combines music, Scripture, prayer and preaching to honor God and serve as a time of reverence and reflection on the Holiness of God Many corps offer a second service on Sunday evenings that focuses on the salvation found in Jesus Christ The Salvation meeting combines music, Scripture, prayer and preaching with a time of sharing about what the Lord has done in the lives of his children
One Army is a 12-part teaching resource created by International Headquarters devised to explain the nature and purposes of “the Army ” One Army brings together Salvationists and friends from all over the world .
For those who want to broaden their horizons, support and encourage others around the world and learn about other cultures, this will achieve all those aims
For Salvationists who want to confirm their own faith and mission, this is a reliable and authentic guide
For those who want to know more about The Salvation Army, this is the most up-to-date, informative and comprehensive guide available .
SERVING SUFFERING HUMANITY
For the Salvationist, Christianity is synonymous with service . A distinguishing feature in the religious life of The Salvation Army is active participation by its members .
The Army recognizes that a physical, emotional and social restoration must go hand in hand with spiritual rebirth . Social service programs are a practical expression of the dominating spiritual motivation of The Salvation Army . Aid is given wherever and whenever the need is apparent, without discrimination .
We believe that God has inspired The Salvation Army’s unique capability to meet both physical and spiritual needs . The Army ministers in more than 130 countries every day . Our global presence allows us to see the needs of a suffering world firsthand, and respond quickly and compassionately on a local level . It is often as simple as sharing some bread and a cup of coffee . It is always an invitation to enter into faith and Christian fellowship .
Active in the United States for more than 135 years, the “Army of Compassion” still marches strong, dedicated to serving in the United States and around the world with the same passion and zeal that drove General Booth into the streets of London more than a century ago
“What Salvationists believe has never been incidental to how we live out our life in Christ as individuals, or as a global spiritual movement . Our faith, grounded in Scripture, and validated victoriously by personal experience, has been the motive force of our obedience in mission .”
—General Paul Rader

Salvation Army corps and other local units operate high-impact seasonal programs throughout the year, including (but not limited to) “Back-to-School” programs in the fall, Thanksgiving and Christmas programs in winter, and day camps and Vacation Bible Schools in summer
The Salvation Army operates many specialized residential programs, including Silvercrest subsidized housing for older adults, Harbor Light Centers for substance abuse treatment, Adult Rehabilitation Centers for recovery from substance use disorders, shelters for survivors of domestic violence, foster homes for children and teens, and safe houses for human trafficking survivors .
While women weep as they do now, I’ll fight; While little children go hungry as they do now, I’ll fight; While men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I’ll fight; While there is a drunkard left, I’ll fight; While there is a poor girl upon the streets, I’ll fight; While there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight, I’ll fight to the very end

Adult Rehabilitation Centers
Their purpose is to help men and women overcome serious life problems, such as drug and alcohol dependencies .
The primary purpose of an adult rehabilitation center is the spiritual regeneration and rehabilitation of men and women who have lost the ability to cope with everyday life . These men and women may be challenged morally, physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually The center affords the opportunity to gain insights into their problems while acquiring self-respect, and to develop moral and spiritual principles of conduct and work habits that will enable them to gain purpose and meaning in their lives .
“I must assert in the most unqualified way that it is primarily and mainly for the sake of saving the soul that I seek the salvation of the body .”
General William Booth
Rehabilitation is the process of restoring or introducing beneficiaries to their best possible level of functioning It includes all aspects of the center program — the spiritual emphasis; work therapy; health and education; social and leisure-time activities; individual and group counseling; the living arrangements; the general aura of the center
The first and highest priority of the rehabilitation program is to bring the beneficiary into a helpful and effective personal relationship with God .

Over 150 years ago, William and Catherine Booth got a vision for what the world could look like when God’s people did God’s work and started The Salvation Army Rather than a “pie in the sky” type of religion, they took Jesus seriously and went about bringing heaven to earth They raised up an army of people equipped with the kind of love that brings transformation in everyday life Hungry people were fed, children were protected, unemployed folks were given meaningful work, social exclusion was exposed and challenged, oppression was unraveled and freedom began to flourish, even laws were changed – all in a beautiful celebration of equality, hope, justice, dignity and community for everyone .
SA justice exists to inspire, inform and instigate justice .
Our mission is to breathe life into The Salvation Army with justice thinking and actions… on earth, as it is in heaven .
Our vision comes from Jesus who embodied the biblical values of human dignity, equality, hope, compassion and community .
In 2016, SA Justice launched Fight for Freedom, a 10-year action plan to combat human trafficking focusing on 4 areas: Awareness & Training, Prevention & Outreach, Survivor Services & Recovery, and Partnerships & Advocacy .
MINISTRY LEADERSHIP
&
I am a servant of God
I am also your servant .
I am subservient . surrendered, and yielded, fully given up to God for the salvation of the world
—General Shaw Clifton Welcome Meeting Address
The strength of any army is its people! Operations of The Salvation Army are supervised by trained, commissioned officers . Members who subscribe to the doctrines of The Salvation Army are called soldiers . Some are employed by the Army in clerical, technical and professional roles . Many provide voluntary lay leadership of adult and youth programs and serve as local officers .
Just as preparation for battle is essential, training and development of current and future leaders is vital . The Salvation Army places high priority on the quality of its service, because we minister in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ .
Today’s Salvationists (officers and soldiers) find unlimited opportunities to serve and to live out the spiritual ministry they’ve been called to, winning people to Christ and creating genuine change in their lives
“Soldiership confirms commitment to the God who raised up the Movement and that commitment is best expressed through service to others . Without soldiers the Army would die . It depends on soldiers to fight the battle against evil . It needs soldiers who know God’s hand of guidance is on them . It needs soldiers who dare to trust God with their lives . It needs soldiers who obey their Lord, and who know how to say ‘Yes’ to him Whoever heard of an Army without soldiers?”
—Robert Street, Called to be God’s People

THE ADVISORY ORGANIZATIONS
Advisory organizations — comprised of community volunteers — strengthen The Salvation Army’s ability to serve . Over time, these organizations have included advisory boards, women’s auxiliaries and most recently, Echelon chapters
The advisory board advises and assists its local Salvation Army with its various activities . Along with offering advice, the board supports the Army financially and with volunteer service and interagency relations
The women’s auxiliary supports Salvation Army programs by fundraising for approved projects, furnishing volunteer workers, assisting in hospitals, operating canteens, distributing food and clothing, and staffing emergency shelters
Echelon chapters offer young professionals, ages 22–35, the opportunity to positively impact the world by partnering with The Salvation Army, combining the skills and energy of Millennials with the Army’s broad scope of service . Their mission is to create opportunities for fundraising, volunteering, networking and advocating for The Salvation Army in their communities
As The Salvation Army grew — becoming the oldest and largest service organization of its kind — it also became increasingly complex . The continuity of the Army’s work in a community is largely dependent upon the strength of its advisory boards and the wisdom, involvement and support of their members .
WOMEN IN MINISTRY
Some of my best men are women
William Booth, co-founder and first General of The Salvation Army, once said, “Some of my best men are women .” This reality came to the General through the continuing, faithful witness of his wife, Catherine .
Long before rising to public ministry herself, Catherine Booth defended the right of a woman to do so . Her defense was written in 1859 in the form of a pamphlet entitled Female Ministry: Or Women’s Right to Preach the Gospel Catherine believed that women were not only given the right of ministry, but were called to ministry – not in spite of Scripture but because of it!
Sitting in Bethesda Chapel in Gateshead, England, on Pentecost Sunday in 1860, Catherine listened as her husband, William, concluded his sermon . She then
“One of the leading
rose to her feet and walked toward the podium . William couldn’t imagine what her purpose was except that maybe something awful had happened He stepped down and asked Catherine, “What is the matter, my dear?” She simply replied, “I want to say a word .” And in a moment of complete, abandoned love, Catherine did what the Lord asked .
From its inception in 1865, The Salvation Army has held to an equality of women and men in ministry . This is an organizational premise based on scriptural mandates Every day, thousands of Salvationist women continue to faithfully serve the Lord in Salvation Army ministry worldwide
Adapted from Broken Alabaster Jars Anne Pickup, WinePress Publishing,1998
principles upon which The Salvation Army is based is the right of women to an equal share with men in the great work of publishing Salvation . This principle is founded upon the claims and sanctions of the Bible on her behalf, and upon the remarkable ability she possesses to manage the Salvation War and to influence the hearts and consciences of the people for God . ”
—The Salvation Army: Its Origin and Development
“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding, it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength; for waging war you need guidance, and for victory many advisors ” Proverbs 24:3-6
This series has been inspired by the verse above, found in Proverbs 24:3-6, and will be geared toward providing eductive training in discipleship, leadership and evangelism . We will feature Salvation Army leaders and friends sharing a compelling ministry idea . These lectures will be shareable not only amongst Salvationists, but with anyone, and will connect viewers with resources for further discussion, instruction and engagement, based on the ideas shared With God’s help, we hope to provide opportunities for corps leadership to be built up, established and filled with wisdom, understanding, and knowledge so they will feel confident and equipped for waging war . This is Call to Arms .
Western Music Institute
The Western Music Institute is a territory-wide ten day music and arts conference providing spiritual development and leadership training for Salvationist musicians between the ages of 14-30 Qualified music leaders from around the territory provide skill training and coaching in their craft to help delegates learn to use their talent and leadership skills in their local corps .

WYI
Western Youth Institute
WYI is a week of discovery and challenge for committed young Salvationists wanting to deepen their relationship with the Lord, while at the same time, exploring innovative and creative ways to share their faith . It’s not for the “faint of heart ” It’s for those with an open heart; open to the leading and urging of the Holy Spirit .
WYI is about discipleship, evangelism, leadership training and lots of fun and fellowship! It is a time for young adults to gather together, to grow together, and to praise and worship God together
Share Change began as the vision of Commissioner James Knaggs, whose goal was to discover the modernday equivalent of the “open air” meeting for a videodriven, online culture . His dream was to develop a video production entity capable of producing Hollywood-caliber video that would catch the eye of people who needed to hear Christ’s message of love and salvation, and connect them to The Salvation Army
Today, Share Change continues to produce top-quality videos that people can identify with, and then uses those videos to attract the attention of those online who need to hear these messages most . This is accomplished through promotion on social media and other platforms online, with the goal being to connect people to the physical and spiritual support The Salvation Army has to offer .
Further, the stories we tell have use across multiple disciplines, finding significance in areas such as community relations, donor development, territorial publications, divisional events, and corps meetings . The reason is simple: we tell the story of the Army…stories of real people whose lives have been transformed by the power of Jesus as experienced through the extended hand of The Salvation Army .
SERVICE CORPS
Salvation Army young adults are provided an opportunity to participate in a short-term summer mission, giving sacrificial Christian service in and out of the Western Territory As a member of a Service Corps team, young adults are challenged in their stewardship and service to God, while learning to adapt to new cultures and living environments .
Living outside of the comfort zone of home, team members are stretched in their understanding of themselves and their knowledge of God’s Word, as they learn to rely more fully on him . They learn to communicate the Gospel message across language and cultural differences while providing practical service in a local community .
The Service Corps program is an incredible ministry tool that gives young adults a chance to embark on a journey that will impact their lives, and the lives of those around them, in ways they could never imagine!
“Service Corps is a God-given opportunity for us to bring our hearts and bind it to the people we encounter in the places where God sends us .”
—Jenny Mao, Malawi 2002
RED KETTLE HISTORY
In 1891,Salvation
Army Captain Joseph McFee was distraught because so many poor individuals in San Francisco were going hungry . During the holiday season, he resolved to provide a free Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken . He only had one major hurdle to overcome - funding the project
Where would the money come from, he wondered He lay awake nights, worrying, thinking, praying about how he could find the funds to fulfill his commitment of feeding 1,000 of the city’s poorest individuals on Christmas Day . As he pondered the issue, his thoughts drifted back to his sailor days in Liverpool, England . He remembered how at Stage Landing, where the boats came in, there was a large, iron kettle called “Simpson’s Pot” into which passers-by tossed a coin or two to help the poor
The next day Captain McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street . Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read, “Keep the Pot Boiling ” He soon had the money to see that the needy people were properly fed at Christmas .
Six years later, the kettle idea spread from the west coast to the Boston area . That year, the combined effort nationwide resulted in 150,000 Christmas dinners for the needy In 1901, kettle contributions in New York City provided funds for the first mammoth sit-down dinner in Madison Square Garden, a custom that continued for many years . Today in the U S , The Salvation Army assists more than four-and-a-half million people during the Thanksgiving and Christmas time periods
Captain McFee’s kettle idea launched a tradition that has spread not only throughout the United States, but all across the world Everywhere, public contributions to Salvation Army kettles enable the organization to continue its year-round efforts at helping those who would otherwise be forgotten

The Salvation Army is readily recognized around the world, but do you know how its symbols came to be? While the red shield is an internationally recognized identifier of Salvation Army service to those in need, the crest is a meaningful symbol of Salvation Army beliefs .
In 1878, 13 years after The Salvation Army’s founding, Captain William Ebdon suggested a logo—the crest—which he designed to proclaim biblical truth and the doctrines of the Army Now the oldest official emblem of The Salvation Army, the crest is said to have first appeared on headwear soon after the 1878 Congress In 1884, Founder William Booth applied to register the crest as a trademark .
Due to copyright issues after an officer broke away from Booth’s Army, The Salvation Army in the U S replaced the crest’s crown with an eagle around 1890 . But when the copyright expired in the 1980s, The Salvation Army in the U S reverted to using the original crest
Crown the crown of life that God will give to those who are faithful to him (James 1:12)
Cross a reminder that Christ’s death is a sacrifice for our sins (Rom 3:25)
Sun and its rays the light and fire of the Holy Spirit (Matt 3:11)
“Blood and Fire”
the motto of The Salvation Army, describing the blood of Jesus shed on the cross to save all people, and the fire of the Holy Spirit that purifies believers
“S” the salvation from sin available through Jesus (John 3:16-17)
The red shield originated in wartime . At the turn of the 20th century, Founder William Booth sent officers to support British troops serving in the Boer War in South Africa They provided refreshments, first aid, chaplaincy and worship for troops while wearing a silver shield with the words “Salvation Army” emblazoned across the badge .
In the aftermath of the war, an officer raised concern that the silver shield worn by Salvationists would reflect light, particularly at night, giving the location of troops to the enemy . As a result, the silver was replaced by a red enamel and the badge became known as the “red shield ” As World War I ended, the Red Shield Club was founded for Salvationist servicemen throughout the world Today, it represents the shield The Salvation Army provides to people in need of help spiritually, physically, financially or emotionally

4 Jesus died on the cross for the human race
5 Salvation is for all mankind and is free to all who accept Jesus Christ
6 It is the responsibility of every Christian to do whatever he or she can to spread the Gospel
7 God rewards those who are faithful with eternal life in Heaven with Him
