The Periferica Project The festival of Periferica Workshop Terms of Participation Entities Involved and Partners
The Periferica Project Periferica acts on the degraded suburban parts of the cities. Every year, the Festival will move into a different neighborhood, concentrating the forces of many entities on the production of new solutions for urban and social degradation, through laboratories of construction, thematic cultural events, creative laboratories, workshops. The aim is, on one hand, to focus the attention on the problems of one neighborhood through the festival, a temporary event, and, at the same time, to donate to the district the instruments that would resolve the most emergent problems. In fact, a significant part of the festival is the construction of various structures, that will be used as spaces for different events and services, like a playground for children, a projection area, an exhibition area (...) always related to the needs of the neighborhood. After the end of the festival, the built structures will remain in the neighborhood, so that after a period of a few years, district after district, the whole suburban line of Mazara will be requalified.

The Periferica Festival_2013 Mazara del Vallo (TP), 2-8 September Goals: Regeneration of the district of Marcello + conversion of a quarry dip into a cultural park of the district. Through: -two workshops, of Architecture and Design; -free creative laboratories -cultural events -art contests for the students.
Location: The location for all initiatives is a quarry dip (3000mq), a part of a series of quarries, inside the district.

The Macello District: The area was a place of extraction of tufa; large quarries pockmarked the survace, on the sides of a narrow lane that connected the city and the plowed fields. Over the years, theese have been partially replaced, with houses, fruit trees, warehouses, deposits. However, some ove them still exist, with their walls covered with fossils and echoes of human and animal voices, over the wall fencing it. But for how much longer? Beeing a subject of a recent building investment, the area is changing, risking to lose forever its own quarries, its historical traces, and allong with them, its on identity; new mansions are emerging from one year to another, without paying any attention the vision of the future or the protection of the preexisting. The aim of this edition of the festival, is to convert a part of the querry in order to create a model that could be repeated in other districts, inviting to reason on the alternative of creating new, different spaces, and using them for social/cultural initiatives, simply for leisure, or for various services for the neighbourhood. Among the querries of the district of Macello, there is one of an irregolar shape, accessible from the street, 3000sqm of area. Inside, a huge tree, sand, caves. This is where the Periferica begins.
Workshop Workshop of Design, theme: lo spazio evocativo The Professors and the student involved are invited to design structures that could host various events and services: a playground, a dining area, en exhibition area (...) as a response to the needs of the neighborhood. These structures will be designed and constructed during the days, involving the residents of the area in the process of designing and the shared construction. Workshop of Architecture, theme: progettare la tutela The evolution of the District of Macello through the conversion of its system of quarries, reasoning on the hypothesis of new residences, parks, services for the neighborhood.
Program: 2-8 September 2013 1 day of presentation of the festival 2 days of analysis of the district 3 days of designing 1 day of presentations of the projects *scheduled lunch breaks in the historical center and in the coast of Mazara. The final agenda will be published during the first week of August.

Who can participate: The application can be completed by any Architecture or Design student. 40 places available, 10 reserved for international students.
How to apply: Complete the online form found on the website www.perifericaproject.tumblr.com/workshop Deadline: July 15th. On the 17th of july, the list of the selected students will be announced.
Costs: The participation in the Workshop is free. To make the one week experience more accessible, there is a package of services with the cost of 150e including: 6 nights+breakfast* 1 free meal a day** 50% of discount in associated restaurants*** *the students will sleep in various appartments near the location and dislocated in Mazara, max 20min of walking distance (we are working on providing bicycles for each student). ** mostly lunches ***pub, brewery, bakeries/sadnwich shops. After the closing of the applications (July 15th), a commission will be gathered to decide on the selected participants. The package fee must be paid within two days after the pubblication of the list of participants, personally, to the Staff. International students will be notified of an IBAN code for the payment.
Extra: preweek The Festival starts on Monday, September 2nd; Anticipate the arrival for Friday (August 30th); visit the city, the historical center and the beaches during the weekend. There’s also the possibility of having site-seeing tours with the city residents. The cost of the preweek is 60€ (20/night) and it includes accommodation for three nights (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) in the previously described apartments, and a 50% discount in associated local bars/restaurants. If interested, after completing the application form, send an e-mail to info.periferica@gmail.com (subject: preweek), indicating your name and surname. important: The Corda association will use all funds raised to cover the costs of the Festival, every donations will be use to buy materials, tools, invite artists, start contest, launching reviews of films, etc..
