PERSONAL STATEMENT As a highly motivated and dedicated person, I have developed a rigorous interest in designing and advocating sustainable ecosystems that negotiate environmental, social, cultural and political influences, to produce vibrant projects. I am passionate about how people interact with the landscape and public spaces and I aspire to facilitate a dialogue between the environment and its occupants by implementing bold interventions. I have thoroughly enjoyed my engagement with Landscape Architecture and crave to continue that participation far into the future, thriving on challenges and spending the time and effort to succeed.
PREFACE As part of my Erasmus exchange program at Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein in Velp, Netherlands, I have chosen to attend an internship at B+B in Amsterdam for a period of 6 months, starting from March 2012. During this internship I’ve learned the true meaning of teamwork and multidisciplinary
in the fields of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning. I would like to thank all the team of B+B for their patience, motivation and inspiration as well as my teachers that have transmited me their knowledge for making all of this possible.
Thanks for all the effort and contribution on this journey

INTRODUCTION My internship started officialy on the 5th of March. However, my seek for a suitable place to live in Amsterdam had started one month before and it is true what people say about finding accommodation in this city. It was a tough period and I’ve been to many places before I finally settle down. This report should illustrate my work within B+B and give and show whether my learning goals have been achieved or not. This way I can reflect on my own development and improve it for the upcoming days of my carreer. Another chapter of my life has just begun...

AMSTERDAM
I came far from home. Far from that small city lying on the coast of Portugal, hoping to see the world out of the little box. I hold my breath and I start the journey from Porto to the Netherlands, first Arnhem and then Amsterdam. Within this chapter, I will describe how I felt living in the capital of Netherlands.

After one year living here, I can’t say that I had as much fun as other foreigners with ample party opportunities would have, but I feel like I had a unique experience and managed to understand Dutch way of living to a deeper level than many passing tourists would. |Above: Queen’s Day in Amsterdam

I was told that Amsterdam is an international city where most of the population are foreigners. In fact, it’s one of the strongest expat communities I’ve ever seen. So much that I found out that some of the people living in this city for many years have never learned Dutch nor have Dutch friends. They had created full lives for themselves within the city and the Dutch have no problem whatsoever with it. Huge communities of foreigners exist in the city, and they almost never interact with the Dutch beyond necessities.
AMSTERDAM
Generally, Dutch people are incredibly friendly and would always ask me with genuine curiosity what I was doing in the Netherlands. Someone suggested to me before I came that the Dutch were not so friendly and it was not going to be easy in the first days, but I felt very welcome in this multi-cultural country since the very first day. They are just more practical than other cultures. I did make some good friends in the country of tulips, cheese and windmills, several of which I was sad to have to say goodbye to.
I will take what I learned from this experience with me as I move on to other cultures. When I think back on Amsterdam, yes, I will remember the beauty of the canals, I will miss bikes as being the main means of transport, I will remember this incredible balance they achieved as a melting pot of many cultures, but most of all I will think about those couple of friends I’ve made in this amazing Erasmus experience. I feel like a little part of me now can say I Amsterdam

ABOUT
THE
BUREAU
B+B is a design bureau, with both national and international clients, founded in 1977 by the landscape architects Riek Bakker and Ank Bleeker, who linked their names to a landscape architecture firm based in Amsterdam. It is organized as a collective talent, a structure that reflects the bureau’s culture. Urban designers, landscape architects, architects, engineers, artists and other personalities work together in order to achieve the best results. Ank Bleeker left the office in 1982, followed 16

by the other founder Riek Bakker in 1986. Despite that, the office philosophy remained intact. In 2010 the book “Bureau B+B Urbanism and Landscape Architecture - Collective Genius 1977-2010” has been published. Over than 600 pages, this book illustrates an overview of the projects and the philosophy of this great office. It is impossible to sum up Bureau B+B without employing the words collective and interdisciplinary.
1
SUSTAINABILITY For more than thirty years now, sustainability has been at the core of Bureau B+B’s approach to design, reuse of spaces and selection of materials.
2
NARRATIVE
OF THE PLACE The ambition of this office lies in a true representation of a space’s characteristics and soul before adding a new chapter to the story behind the place.
3
CRAFTMANSHIP Bureau B+B has a long tradiction of working with external professionals within the office. They are indispensable for the success of a project.
4
COLLABORATION The open design proccess is interpretated as a proccess in which everyone participates, bringing their own field of expertise and set of responsabilities into discussion.

ORGANIZATION
&
STRUCTURE
Bureau B + B is a private limited company whose shares are organized into a foundation. This kind of structure was created after Rick Bakker’s departure and it includes two representatives of the employees, two members of direction team and an outside chairman. The special feature about this organization is that the employees are not equivalent and thus a direction team is in charge. There is less hierarchy within the office and therefore the atmosphere is more relaxed. The management of the office consists of six people, in which two are members
of the foundation and responsable for the day-to-day administration within the bureau. Regarding the implementation of financial policies and other regulations, the management is accountable to the board of the foundation. The foundation board meets for an annual evaluation, a budget for the upcoming year, a forecasting and cash flow projections. In decisions with an even number of votes, the vote of the external chairman is decisive. Employee representatives are present in the annual accounts and budget approval.

23
APPLICATION The seek for my first internship started on Winter of 2011, kicked off by a list of offices that usually accept foreign students as interns, provided by my academic supervisor Ad Koolen. After a few email exchanges, I went to several interviews on many Dutch offices, but it was on 13th of December 2011 that I presented my portfolio to Mascha Onderwater in B+B. Usually after an interview I expect to get the same speech “You will hear something from us within a few days”, although this time was different. I become a member of the team and I couldn’t be happier.

G298 Total Adviser B + B (urban planning and landscape architecture) in collaboration with Danish Grassat + MIST (landscape and planning) with AART (architects) and Mid Consult (engineers) as sub-consultant and Go’Proces as consultants were invited to a competition for a sustainable, architectural and landscape vision plan for the development of the suburbs Søndermarken in Vejle, Denmark, in order to provide its own identity and a better image, so the area becomes more attractive to the locals.

ASSIGNMENT Søndermarken is the district between the two river valleys - forest in the west and the open natural Mølholm Ådal in the east. Based on Mølholm river valley, the vision for this assignment brings the landscape qualities close onto and into the district, so the city and country side together provides a framework around a number of new communities. This way, Søndermarken illustrates an example of how the surrounding landscape and peri-urban nature can become an active, useful and thus integral space to the goodness of life in the suburbs.

MY This was the first project I was involved since I started my internship and I couldn’t be happier that I just had join in the beginning of the process. As a first step I did a few crossections of the existing situation to analyse the topography and the profile of the main street. There was a meeting scheduled in Copenhagen in order to discuss and develop the project further, so together with another intern we built a working model that would help trying out different solutions for the proposal.
TASKS
I created a colour and graphic scheme that would be used by all the members of the team in order to end up with visual coherency in the final products and meanwhile I did a base file for all the diagrams we used in the booklet. In the last days of this competition I was engulfed with the visualizations, building up a 3D model to use as a base for the collage that shows the surroundings of the community centre of Vejle.

EVALUATION Working on this competition was definetly an extraordinary experience. Despite the fact that this was the first time I was involved in a working atmosphere and still getting used to the office workflow, I really had a great time and I improved and learned already so much. Working in cooperation with other offices, deal with pressure and short deadlines, develop my software skills and even using for the first time a foam cutting
machine. In the end I could say I was proud of our final results and at least for me we had already win this competition. Chieu-Ahn, the intern that was working with me on this project left the office after this deadline and for the first time I went to her borrel (goodbye drinks) with all the employees of the Bureau. I could say that this was a refreshing and motivating start of my internship.

O059 Within the open call procedure, the municipality of Mechelen has chosen, from all registered candidates, five design teams to develop a vision plan for Station - Grote Markt axis. Bureau B+B was selected to redesign a strategic project for Mechelen that gives expression to important structure and mobility policy. The goal of this project is to connect the heart of the historic centre – Grote Markt – to the city’s gateway – the Station, in total three squares and five street profiles.

The most public space of Mechelen, the main shopping street of Flanders, the entrance for traveling visitors and the most green axis are the principles that makes the spaces comfortable and orientated for the pedestrians and cyclists. It is where the highest priority should be given. The main character of this axis is highlighted by a strong palette of prime materials that connects the squares together into a richly varied route with a strong character. The squares itself provides a rich variety of experiences and moods.

MY
TASKS
On this project I had the opportunity to be a part of the design team and start with some sketch studies and proposals for this axis. I was in charge of producing the analysis schemes, the crossections of the existing situation and even visit Mechelen to get a better feeling of the project area and also take some pictures of the paving materials and buildings. I started a draft of the booklet layout to have a feeling of the space we need for presenting
our proposal and at the meantime I rendered a few viewpoints for the collages and prepared a background with the existing buildings for the visualization of Botermarkt. The last days before the deadline I was busy with the plan drawing, both in autocad and illustrator as well as the panels for the final delievery. It was also needed all the areas and lengths of some materials in the proposal for the final budget calculation.

EVALUATION This competition was probably the longest period that I was working on the same subject within the office. Having the opportunity of being able to sketch and develop ideas for the proposal was without any doubt the most challenging and enriching experience. I had time to make research for references, to get inspired and to bring ideas into
discussion. Although, I think I could have done much more for this project in the design phase, but somehow I felt insecure, maybe because it was the first time that I was actually involved in the design even being an intern. Nevertheless, it was an extremely good opportunity also to learn, discuss ideas and ask myself questions about the design proccess.

ASSIGNMENT Hersted Industrial Park was developed as part of postwar planning in Copenhagen, where the industrial areas were located outside the city centre and usually close to important infrastructure. Nowadays, it offers therefore as other similar areas, primarily companies with warehousing and logistics. The proposal for the new future of this area is a living plan that can be adjusted for a transformation proccess kicked-off by four parallel strategies for a new sustainable park - economical; organization; sustainable and regional planning strategies - presented on the timeline as different story lines with events attached that shows the transformation throughout the upcoming years. Therefore, the starting point for this new

development called Loop Park will be the new light rail that connects all the Copenhagen’s suburbs. The 1:2500 plan takes into account the rainwater issues as well as the food production loops within the area and it presents a possible transformed industrial park in 2040 as a spatial impact of the new strategies. The approach to this project deals also with the special challenges that commercial areas in the suburbs has to offer, including many private landowners and conflict of interests. This way, Hersted Industrial Park presents itself as a flexible framework for future growth and welfare.

HEIN’S
TSHIRT
Hein’s t-shirt illustrates the project of Albertslund that we both worked on and tells the story of the loop city, the colour scheme and the masterplan that he made.

EVALUATION Within this chapter I will make a review of the results obtained and a reflection of what I have learned. This evaluation should sum up the knowledge acquired along the six month period of my internship and confirm if I achieved my goals.

PERSONAL
EVALUATION
I started my internship at B+B a bit reluctant and with some uncertainty, therefore I could not immediately show my full capacities and talent, maybe because it was my first internship, the first time I was working on this field and this feeling was increased even more knowing that I was abroad working in English. This was disappearing the more I worked and I got to know better my colleagues. In fact, when the first assignment was over, I felt very glad of my end results and it was even more satisfying to get credit for it. Working as a landscape designer in a real life situation was absolutely thriving to
SUPERVISOR
EVALUATION
Carlos and I worked on many projects in different stages. He proved to be a very committed and reliable team member and he is calm and deals with stress in a good way. He has well-developed computer skills and Bureau B+B has used many of the schemes, drawings and collages that he produced during his internship. Carlos learned from

me and I have learned more than I could imagine. This was partly due to the high level of autonomy that the office expect from the interns and this independent attitude gave me more room to do things by myself and improve in so many ways. In the end of this internship I can say that I learned and enriched my knowledge quite much. Some of my learning goals were afterwards perhaps a little bit unrealistic to achieve in a six month period, but I am totally glad with the experience that I would have been able to obtain during this chapter of my carreer.
working at B+B as well as contributed to the work of the office. In the future I would suggest him to show more of his creativity and design skills. He can improve to share his vision on a subject, project or design. I wish him all the luck and success in his carrer. Jan Maas, MLA

EPILOGUE Sustainable design, craftmanship, multidisciplinarity and collaboration were definitions that I could experience during the half year of this internship. Moreover, I was very glad to have the opportunity to deal with
all the stages of a project and to be a part of this office. I can finally feel like at home withint the Bureau B+B and I will take a part of it with me for my upcoming carreer.
Thanks to all the people that make this experience possible...
