Södertälje - Sweden Project Name: Maren’s waterfront redevelopment Location: Södertälje, Sweden Category: Academic Project Team: Carlos Dias Project Year: 2014
08
The project is developed in Södertälje and it was intended to address themes related to public space and green structure in urban context. Through a brief study of Stockholm’s park system by Holger Blom in the 1950’s and a critical analysis of two reference projects, Norr Mälarstrand and Superkilen, this work outcomes is a comprehensive analysis of the site and subsequent preliminary project that seeks to solve the problems of the city of Södertälje in Sweden, namely the urban redevelopment of the axis between the railway station and Stortorget, the main public spaces and the surrounding of the waterfront in Maren.
09
The proposal tries to follow the guiding principles of sustainability, creating a dynamic enhancer of ecological space, while allowing opportunities for recreation and experimentation of public space, demonstrating the important role of the Landscape Architect in the design of cities.
Almere Oosterwold Project Name: Almere Oosterwold – Experience of Nature Location: Almere, The Netherlands Category: Academic Project Team: Carlos Dias, Joyce Lokate, Silko van der Vliet and Yokal van Boeckel Project Year: 2012
12
This project takes place in the eastern part of the city of Almere, which comprises the expanded area of Almere Oost as well as the yet-to-be-established ecological corridor, called OostvaardersWold. This area lies in part of the Flevoland polder in the Netherlands 30km far from Amsterdam.
13
The main landmark in this region is the Oostvaardersplassen, one of the most special nature reserves in The Netherlands which lies on the north part of the area. One of the goals is to connect the nature reserve to the country’s most extensive nature area, the Veluwe. Almere is on the threshold of a new housing extension, increasing the households in 18.000, to give a much-needed quality boost to the northern Randstad region.
The design of the elements like lakes, rivers, swamps and forest are based on the soil under layer, mainly on the ground subsidence being the most on the north side of the area and the least in the south. Therefore the north part of the area has open and wet character and the south a dry and a lot of forest. This scheme is also used in the design of the corridor.
Aveiro - Urban Park Project Name: Aveiro – Urban Park Location: Aveiro, Portugal Category: Academic Project Team: Amålia Miranda, Carlos Dias, Diogo Saldanha and Marta Seabra Project Year: 2013
The proposed landscape intervention is developed in the area defined by the urbanization plan of the city of Aveiro in Portugal as the future urban park. The design was based on an analysis of existing elements and characterization of the surrounding spaces.
16
Given the scarcity of the financial resources of the municipality it was intended to create a plan that promotes functionality, ecology and scenic quality, without jeopardizing the sustainable function of living systems in relation to users, due to the current situation of the commissioners.
17
18
The intervention aims to ensure a variety of recreational activities. There is a market that could be used to sell the local goods produced in the agriculture fields and a restaurant area with terrace integrated in a square located in a strategic view onto the park. Next to these facilities, visitors can also recreate themselves in the orchard with picnic tables or produce their own products at the urban agriculture plots provided by the municipality.
The proposal acts as mediating space between the urban, rural and green, trying to foster a sense of community and their active participation in the functions of the park in order to create a place of experiences and activities.
Søndermarken Project Name: Søndermarken - Visions of the future suburb Location: Vejle, Denmark Category: Internship - Competition Project Team: Carlos Dias, Chieu Anh, Daniëlle Huls and Mascha Onderwater Project Year: 2012
20
Søndermarken is the district between the two river valleys - forest in the west and the open natural Mølholm Ådal in the east. Based on Mølholm river valley, the vision for this assignment brings the landscape qualities close onto and into the district, so the city and country side together provides a framework around a number of new communities. This way, Søndermarken illustrates an example of how the surrounding landscape and peri-urban nature can become an active, useful and thus integral space to the goodness of life in the suburbs.

Kaliningrad - Russia Project Name: Framing Future Kaliningrad Location: Kaliningrad, Russia Category: Internship - Competition Project Team: Andrei Deacu, Carlos Dias, Chuhan Zhang, Maria Gregorio, Martin Arfalk and Patrick Verhoeven Project Year: 2014
24
The proposal offers Kaliningrad a roadmap to a new sustainable city, not a blueprint of a static future cityscape. This process of change takes time and is therefore in need of strong basic strategies of development, allowing flexibility within that firm framework for the generations to come. Cities with a compact, flexible and ecological system will be the ones that will sustain over time. We have been searching for this system for future Kaliningrad and have found a framework that will allow the city to grow with

a variety of lifestyles and functions, within a sustainable transport system and ecological city structure, leading to the vibrant sustainable city of Kaliningrad. The project provides a transformation strategy that incorporates the different historic layers and at the same time makes use of the dynamic forces that influence the central area of Kaliningrad. This roadmap offers a delicate balance between all the assets that Kaliningrad possesses and will turn it into the sustainable compact city of the future.
Mechelen Axis Project Name: Mechelen - Station/Grote Markt Axis Location: Mechelen, Belgium Category: Internship - Competition Project Team: Carlos Dias, Barbara Keil, Frans Boots, Gert-Jan Wisse and Jan Maas Project Year: 2012
The most public space of Mechelen, the main shopping street of Flanders, the entrance for traveling visitors and the most green axis are the principles that makes the spaces comfortable and orientated for the pedestrians and cyclists. It is where the highest priority should be given. The main character of this axis is highlighted by a strong palette of prime materials that connects the squares together into a richly varied route with a strong character. The squares itself provides a rich variety of experiences and moods.
