CARLSBAD SCULPTURE GARDEN CELEBRATES 25 YEARS It’s hard to believe that the city’s Sculpture Garden has been open for the past 25 years! When I started as a part-time arts instructor with the City of Carlsbad’s Cultural Arts Office 21 years ago, I was impressed with the vast amount of arts programs offered to the community. Now, I manage the city’s public art collection with new projects and maintain our permanent works. Additionally, I coordinate new temporary public art experiences, like this exhibit . . . and I’m thrilled. I’m drawn to clean architectural lines with a minimalistic approach, but I can also appreciate the beauty in organically inspired lines and shapes. Another Glance: Celebrating 25 Years in the Garden showcases artwork with both aesthetic sensibilities. Over 25 years, the city’s Sculpture Garden has exhibited works by 50 different artists. This exhibit showcases nine sculptures by artists (mostly) based in San Diego County, and each with an abundance of talent to highlight so close to home.

FEATURED ARTISTS: David Beck-Brown (La Mesa) Neal Bociek (Spring Valley) John Dupree (Vista) Elon Ebanks (Vista) Jeffery Laudenslager (Encinitas) Christopher Lee (La Mesa) Diana Markessinis (Oakland) Deanne Sabeck (Encinitas) Leslie Wilton (Escondido) Paul Wilton (Escondido) The city is proud to highlight such an array of impressive artwork by local, regional and national artists over the past 25 years. The space has been refreshed and is a place to be contemplative and inspired. Every time I visit, I experience something new. Our gates are open for all to enjoy!

Diana Markessinis’ sculpture, Kaktos, original term for cactus, was inspired by the Cholla cactus. The Cholla is a fuzzy cactus that sheds its texture and turns into a beautiful skeleton underneath it all. Markessinis describes the skeletal form of the Cholla cactus as being beautifully strong where everything is connected all in one network. She chose to create this sculpture using a pipe-and-tube welding technique which results in two tall cylindrical forms that stand strong and casts beautiful shadows.

John Dupree is a self-taught artist with a strong background in welding. Dupree is inspired by working with various types of metals and found objects. Breaking Away was created using found objects, bicycle wheels, that were to be discarded from a local bike shop. Dupree elected to repurpose these wheels by layering the circular shapes and welding them together to create an interesting composition. The title Breaking Away comes from a 1970s movie, by the same title, which a high school graduate was determined to leave his small town where he grew up and to overcome any challenge, then became obsessed with Italian cycling. Dupree focused on shape and line, connecting to rhythm and balance within his piece, breaking out from a traditional rectangular frame.

Art has always been a part of the Wilton’s lives, from the inception until today. Leslie

and Paul Wilton believe that you can

use anything to create a work of art. Old rusty metal tends to be more exciting to the Wilton’s than new, pristine pieces of metal.

Deep Ocean was inspired by an associate of Paul’s who would go out to film squids. Deep Ocean was sculpted with an oceanic, nautical theme, emphasized with the large bell in the center that makes a deep nautical sound when struck.

Elon Ebanks is inspired by nature. The movement and natural flow of tree branches, clouds passing by...Peace Dove resulted from a lot of years in the making. Ebanks created Peace Dove to resemble two doves moving swiftly through the sky. The title seemed fitting. Ebanks created this sculpture using a half-inch dish steel. The mill finish is the surface textured finish of metal after it rolls through the mill resulting in the gently curved sculptural shapes. Ebanks’ sculpture has a rhythmic order with the use of repetition of lines that have a gradual flow, similar to what you see in nature.

David Beck-Brown draws inspiration from his former life as a dancer when creating his sculptures. His sculpture ELECTRA exemplifies movement with use of expressive lines made out of monochrome steel. ELECTRA has the spark and electricity with this piece demonstrating the push and pull within this singular work of art. Beck-Brown describes this sculpture being “on pointe.” In ballet, dancers moving gracefully on the tips of their toes are on pointe, as you can see the same with ELECTRA.

Deanne Sabeck designs and fabricates beautiful kinetic light sculptures that are activated by wind and light.

Heliotrope III is made of stainless steel and dichroic glass allowing light and shadow to transform her sculpture. Dichroic glass displays one of two different colors depending on lighting conditions. In Sabeck’s piece, there are hints of blue and green tones and then next glimpse, there are pinks, oranges and some hints of yellows. Sabeck draws inspiration from nature, floral shapes and colors, and is drawn to beautifully curved helix shape.

Neal Bociek was heavily influenced by his experiences that took place in his childhood years. Bociek grew up in Westport, Massachusetts near the Atlantic island river that flows out of the ocean, where he spent a lot of time boating. Bociek’s sculpture Seafarer shows off the blue tones with the living green elements, while portraying a whimsical mix of oceanic movement. Within Seafarer there are waves crashing at the top, the hull and keel from the boat, to the center anchor demonstrating that sculptures have a form of storytelling within them.

Jeffery Laudenslager creates kinetic sculptures that consists of geometric shapes which are joined and balanced, so that wind alone will activate them. BioBa was created to serve as a model for a larger commissioned work for a biotech company in San Diego. BioBa was inspired by the number 8, a special number in the Chinese culture, meaning wealth or fortune. BioBa shifts and changes its appearance and captures new frames in time depending on the gusts of wind coming through the garden.

Christopher Lee’s design process is initially driven by materials and tools, then the concept evolves. The title, Scion, has a double meaning, “a young shoot or twig of a plant, especially one for grafting” and “a descendent of a noble family.” Lee pulls inspiration from the materials to define the visual storyline of this piece, as “growing a great dynasty from a small beginning.” The top portion of Scion is a limb of a salvaged citrus tree, which then was shaped, cut and reshaped to then continue their growth together. The limb’s metallic reflection comes from hundreds of copper nails driven into the wood.
