"Sly Scissor Eddie" was written for friends at the Yale School of Music in Spring 1999. The title is a respelling of an oft-heard pronouncement at "Naples," the popular campus hangout. In a similar fashion, the titles of the six sections were constructed around hidden references to the restaurant. Musically, the work draws on several rock songs which were in constant rotation in the jukebox there, and also -- of course -- the Neapolitan Sixth chord. The end result, however, is essentially an unusual fairy tale whose origins need not be of any import for the listener.
