FOREWORD
PRESIDENT, ILAM
CEO, TRX City Sdn. Bhd.
The Malaysia Landscape Architectural Awards or MLAA which started in 2007 has reach its 11th edition. This prestigious landscape architecture industry award is held annually in conjunction with the World Landscape Architecture Month. Over the years, MLAA has taken a wider scope from professional landscape architectural planning and design works to now incorporating green initiatives by communities, government agencies and corporate sectors.
Congratulations to the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) on the 11th instalment of the Malaysia Landscape Architects Award (MLAA). The award has established itself as the pivotal industry recognition in celebrating the best in class for outdoor environments and public realm in Malaysia, which TRX has the honour of being a part of.
As Malaysia is rapidly moving to be a developed nation, process of urbanisation is taking place swiftly and this creates a tremendous pressure to our environment and natural landscapes. Whilst development and urbanisation are inevitable, it is our responsibility that developments should adopt and incorporate a “Green Infrastructure” approach. Green infrastructure would enable us to harness multiple potentials and values from natural landscapes for the betterment of environment, community, and economy. This year, substantial number of entries has addressed the application of green infrastructure which we believe are not only aesthetically pleasing but has multiple benefits to people and environment. Consequently, green infrastructure greatly improves our quality of life and the wellbeing of the nation. We believe that the whole idea of green infrastructure is related to National Landscape Policy, National Urbanisation Policy, and UN Habitat Sustainable Development Goal and MLAA is the perfect platform to showcase such initiatives. ILAM would like to express our deepest gratitude to our Platinum Partner, TRX City Sdn. Bhd. for enabling us to publish this annual publication. We believe that your great organisation will commit to create the Tun Razak Exchange as a new urban showcase for “Green Infrastructure” thus making it the “Place” that is conducive to live, work, and play.
Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Suhardi Maulan Chief Editor, Malaysia Landscape Architecture Yearbook 2018 President, Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM)
At TRX, we strongly believe that Kuala Lumpur needs high quality and culturally relevant public spaces. As a nationally significant project in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, we are able to do more than just propagate this idea. As Malaysia’s best international address, the 70-acre TRX envisions its public spaces as the heart and soul of the district – one that will seamlessly integrate with the larger landscape around it, allowing for an outdoor environment that is fully integrated into the urban fabric. The public realm in TRX is, for all intents and purposes, a place for the people. It’s a strong symbol of Kuala Lumpur’s status as an inclusive and forward-looking global city. Together with ILAM and the other industry players, TRX is committed in championing, nurturing, and advancing public spaces for the enjoyment and benefit of all Malaysians.

Top 10 Picks
2019 Landscape Design Trend Landscape architectural design is an ever-changing practice, which suits current social needs, responds to surroundings, and shapes the lifestyle we live today. Each year, the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia observes the design trends that influence our current landscape spaces. Below are the top 10 picks.
Bringing Outdoor In
Lush Is King
Fluid and Irregular
Landscape is not only about the space we create. It is also a borrowed view of the surrounding beauty, capturing the essence and introducing it into the space that we designed as a part of the whole experience. It is constructed in such a way that it frames the view, far beyond the interior.
Lush greeneries are essential and a sought-after trend especially for commercial spaces that seeks to provide a massive green coverage even when working with minimal space. This elevates the value of the exterior space and also provides a green luxury space for urbanites to relax and congregate.
Fluid and irregular shaped layout used in landscape design is trendy again as rectangular shapes and lines has become old-fashioned. It creates more secluded spaces, producing a wholesome experience of casual feel and organic spaces.
Floating Island
Weaving and Woven
Rain Gardens
The usage of plants in landscape design is evolving, it is not only used on the surrounding land but also in waterways and reflective pond. This forms a unique and stunning floating island that is specially created as a prominent feature.
The art of weaving has been adopted as a part of landscape features. This complex pattern can be used as a structure in garden spaces, framing it to be an artistically unique area. This creative artform allows it to be highlighted as an iconic feature.
Urban areas are highly exposed to pollution and dirt. When it rains, surface runoff causes pollutants to contaminate our waterways. This poses a great threat to plants, wildlife, as well as human being. The primary purpose of a rain garden is to improve the water quality of nearby bodies of water. It is also to ensure that rainwater is readily available as groundwater for surrounding plants rather than being sent through stormwater drains straight out to the sea.
Design With Nature
Adventure Play
Insta Spot
Park... Elevated
A deep understanding of science and the law of nature helps to design a site that is environmentally sensitive. Creating a nature themed attraction requires a thorough understanding of environmental design approach and harvesting the hidden potential of the site. At the same time, this attraction protects the genius loci, natural habitat and ecology.
With the growing popularity of extreme games and sports, nature is now a playground for adults. Jungles, mountains and hills are where activities such as mountain biking, jungle trekking and also hiking take place. This will also promote the preservation of nature’s geological features and the surrounding flora and fauna.
Bold and unique spaces are now a popular attraction for Instagrammer to check in. With this in mind, landscape design draws inspiration from the latest trend by creating spaces with eye-catching and eccentric features that offers a ‘wow’ factor to an Instagram post.
The rapid urban development and rising cost of providing an open space in the city has inspired landscape architects to be innovative. By creating a big scale urban park on the roof of the building, this ensures that each surface of the urban areas is fully utilised. This green lush area provides a more conducive environment and combats heat island effect.

Jeti Lama Rain Garden Butterworth, Seberang Perai, Penang The Butterworth Baharu Regeneration Master Plan identified a 1000-square meter informal car park within the Jeti Lama heritage precinct of Pekan Lama as a potential site to be converted as a green space. Based on public consultation, there was a strong sentiment value for the car park to be retained. The challenge was to craft a space that could balance the objective of creating a green refuge, while at the same time, respecting the sentiments of the local community. Water was seen as a key recurring element at Jeti Lama, manifesting itself from the perimeter monsoon drain to the myth of telaga (water well) that has long disappeared. A Rain Garden was then proposed, with phytoremediation plants to absorb petroleum hydrocarbon and other form of runoff pollutants from the car park. A lone, dignified wooden sampan sits within the Rain Garden, it is a homage to Jeti Lama fishing enclave which gave way to progress and development. The language and materiality of the design pays homage to the Straits eclectic style that was notably absent in Butterworth. The telaga is re-imagined as a domestic hand-pumped water feature, serving as an interactive children’s water play highlight. Jeti Lama Rain Garden now functions as a car park within a garden. River-Green Landscape Master Plan Bintulu, Sarawak
The River-Green Landscape Master Plan is a study of 3 major rivers in Bintulu to compliment the town’s storm water and urban drainage system. The master plan develops a synergy relationship between conventional infrastructure and the highly engineered design of nature. With that relationship, the proposed solutions of River-Green approach are low-tech, built on the ground surface, and integrates climate adaptation solutions within the limited confinement of urban space. We transformed unused river reserves into the green spines of Bintulu that serves as landscape of River Greenway by reviewing water characteristics, quality and modelling, inventory of storm water assets, land use planning, sediment transport issues, water resources, and the carefully composed tapestry of topography, hydrology, and vegetations. This proposed landscaped River Greenway will be a verdant, animated civic space that integrates the ecological and social fabric of Bintulu town, and it presents as an added value to the engineering works.

Integrated Golf Resort Master Plan Luzon, Philippines
The project site is a convergence of pristine shrubland and agriculture fields, of man and nature. The study area was 722-hectares large. Considering the limited accessibility to the area, the site’s morphology reflects low human intervention. The majority of the site accommodates a diverse native landscape typically known for its rich ecology of flora and fauna. A development area of 400-hectares out of the 722-hectares has been carefully selected and made available for the first phase of the study. A sensitive landscape planning methodology has been adopted to outline the project boundaries and to conceptualise the master plan. This comprises of site observations, topographical and hydrological studies, terrain mapping of GIS data, and landscape assessments. As a model for sustainability and eco-tourism, the Golf Resort Master Plan is sensitively integrated with the preservation of existing waterways and clearly defined by its hillside reserves. The development is thereby tethered to the local ecosystem and linked into regional awareness and strong environmental stewardship.

Hillside Park & Community Landscape Planning at Highland Tower Taman Hill View, Ulu Kelang, Selangor
Hillside community planning is defined as high-challenging development of human settlement. The hillside itself is categorised as an environmentally sensitive area that is prone to environmental hazards. Thus, urban dwellers nowadays have met with the population pressure in an urban sprawl, which has increased the demand for hillside development. Taman Hillview has the potential to be develop as hillside community landscape that promotes conservation, improving community safety, and regulating guidelines of hillside development through sustainable landscape design. Since it was abandoned due to major landslide incident, this area has deteriorated as a result of degradation of land, inadequate sub surface natural water flow, and water runoff. The study describes the details in which development of hillside park can be considered as a landscape buffer or transition zones to prevent from excessive land development. As a result, this research design provides preservation and conservation of natural forest that responds towards the safety of communities and create a sense of belonging.

TT5 Interactive Living Museum: The Last Tin Dredge Tanjung Tualang, Perak
‘Bijih Timah’ or Tin was first discovered in Malaysia during 18th century, in Perak; the earliest and biggest tin mining state in the country. The historical discovery has led Malaysia to be the primary producer of tin for more than 2 centuries. After the downfall of tin mining industry in the late 20th century, the dredges have been dismantled and sold, all except for this very last piece of the meritorious machine, ‘Tanjung Tualang No.5’ or ‘TT5’. Currently, TT5 has already been gazetted as state property and restored as a museum called “Muzium Kapal Korek Tanjung Tualang”. More than a decade passed, the museum is yet to be the main attraction for people to visit despite the richness of history that being uphold. The objective of this research is to promote the importance of preserving this last tin dredge and to improve the attraction value of this place by introducing live museum approach, which is an interactive exhibit that allows visitor to experience the real simulation of mining activity. This dredge is a very important historical asset that should be preserved in order for us and our future generation to understand our history and how our country was built.

Rural Landscape Character Framework for Tourist Routes
Impact of Landscape Settings on Walkability and Healthy Lifestyle in Tropical Climate
International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Assoc. Prof. LAr. Dr. Khalilah Zakariya Asst. Prof. LAr. Dr. Putri Haryati Ibrahim Nur Amirah Abdul Wahab
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) LAr. Zanariah Kasim Dr. Mohd Fairuz Shahidan Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norsidah Ujang
Rural tourism is one of the government’s agenda to increase job opportunities and eliminate poverty of the local communities. The conservation of natural and cultural landscape can contribute to the sustainability of tourism products, such as traditional homestay, local food, local arts and crafts, agricultural activities, and experiencing natural and rural settings. Tourism routes are the connections between the tourists and their destinations, where the landscape settings play a crucial role in shaping the tourist experience. However, the fragmentation of rural attractions and the lack of integration along the rural route result in the disconnection of tourism products and disrupt the pleasurable experience. The imbalanced rural corridor development dismisses the potentials of local economic opportunities along the tourism routes.
A suitable microclimate can increase pedestrian comfort, encourage walkability and support healthy lifestyle. This study aimed at measuring the effectiveness of selected types of Landscape Environmental Setting for Pedestrian (LESP) in influencing the thermal comfort and comfortable walking distance in tropical urban environments. Field measurement data and survey were conducted under 5 different types of LESP in a university campus. The types are No shade (Type 1), Metal deck roof (Type 2), One row of trees (Type 3), Combined deck roof and trees (Type 4), and Two rows of trees (Type 5). Pedestrian thermal comfort is assessed by measuring i) Air temperature (Ta), ii) Globe temperature (Tg), iii) Wind velocity (v), iv) Surface temperature (Ts), and v) Relative humidity (Rh). Data were analysed and ranked according to the comfort level of the pedestrians and comfortable walking distance. Results indicate that different types of LESP provide different thermal comforts. The findings also proved that pedestrians can walk along the pedestrian walkway up to 1km with the condition of continuous shading on top of walkway from two rows of tree (LESP Type 5). This will lead to a tropical healthy lifestyle and comfortable walking due to the effective landscape setting and environment. The findings may be helpful for landscape architects in specifying appropriate microclimate interventions to enhance walkability and healthy lifestyle in tropical climate.
Therefore, it is important that the rural landscape characters are integrated into landscape master plans and tourism route planning, to ensure that rural developments are more wholistic and sustainable. The goal of this research is to establish the Rural Landscape Character Framework to guide Landscape Architects and Local Authorities incorporate significant landscape characters into landscape masterplans and tourism masterplans. This is in line with Dasar Landskap Negara, Landscape Architecture Agenda 2030, Dasar Perancangan Fizikal Desa Negara and Rural Tourism Masterplan Malaysia. This research has examined the Kuala Selangor – Sabak Bernam route in Selangor as one of the case studies. The Rural Landscape Character Framework proposed in this research can be adopted in the formulation of Landscape Master Plan (Pelan Induk Landskap) particularly during the Technical Report preparation, which is crucial in the proposal of landscape masterplan concept, design strategies and action plans. The identification of these significant landscape characters corresponds to LAA2030’s strategic focus areas on safeguarding and managing natural resources (SF02), and inclusion of local social and cultural values through promoting local identity and image (SF03). The recognition and inclusion of rural landscape characters in future plans of the rural areas can help natural and cultural landscapes to sustain alongside future developments. This will also help to ensure the livelihood of the rural community are integrated into the plans.

Evidence-Based Planning Penang Green Connectors Project Think City Sdn. Bhd. One of Penang’s competitive advantages is its liveability factor. Studies have shown that proximity to green open spaces and nature contributes significantly to overall wellbeing and quality of life. It is therefore of paramount importance that Penang has a well-defined network of open spaces that maximises the potential for social interaction, economic activity, and environmental preservation. The Penang Green Connectors Project demonstrates how geospatial tools (GIS) can be used to analyse the landscape, demonstrate the need for an expanded open space system and inform the location and design of future networks in achieving one of the Sustainable Development Goal 11 targets which is to provide universal access to safe, inclusive and accessible, green and public spaces, particularly for women and children, older persons and persons with disabilities.

Aboveground Carbon Sequestration Potential in Open Space and Urban Green Reserve, Case Study at Pasir Gudang, Johor Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Dr. Alamah Misni Ms. Sakurah Jamaluddin
Green areas in a city are the foundation of the natural productivity in the urban structure. It is also known as natural cooling device which plays a vital role in our cities as an urban lung, discharging oxygen to reduce the city’s heat, and the wall for harmful air pollution. However, urbanization happens, and green space was sacrifice for this rapid urban expansion. Recently, the attention to mitigate the urban climate phenomenon effected from the degradation of green space issues widely get attentions by many researchers. The formation of heat radiates from various development activity and others of heat sources are intensely delimited the green space roles to produce a natural thermal comfort to the city ambience thus increase the urban heat temperature. Therefore, the need to identify its significant is a must and valuable to explore. Hence, the purpose of this study is to utilises aerial images of 2002, 2012, and 2017, in order to: first, identify urban green space patterns from 2002 to 2017 and secondly, assess causal relationships between urban green space patterns and urban heat temperature between the periods. This research tests the suitability of object-based classification methods of the remote sensing images in terms of their capability to correctly classify urban green space patterns in Kuala Lumpur. The study also widely applied the cross-sectional method to investigate the correlation links between green space pattern against heat temperature distribution by using spatial analyst regression and spatial analysis statistic test. The research further examined whether the causal link varied spatially over the study area and finally could quantitatively analyse the effects of the green space degradation towards increasing heat event in KL. From the research finding, the loss of green space size in the city can be compared to a total of 2,843 units of football fields, transformed forever, in just 10 years. The huge transformation of green space use into built up areas within this period has increase an average mean temperature up to 2.1°c per year. The main contribution of this finding is to perform a new dimension solution in green space spatial analysis development that could reflects the influence of future heat distribution in urban environment settings. Besides, the implementation of GIS advance technology as new mitigation tools in analysing urban climate event as well as monitoring the loss of green space in this city can provide a variety of enhanced information which could offer city planners and urban landscapes to defend decisions about protecting the ‘natural cooling device’.

The world is experiencing rapid development and urbanisation of urban areas that cause an increase in the carbon emission which contributes to greenhouse gasses and global warming. The environment has been declining for the past few years while extreme weather has impacted some urban areas in Malaysia. In 2009, the Malaysian government pledged to achieve up to 40% voluntary reduction in carbon emission intensity by 2020. Now it is time to move forward by proposing the green and low-carbon way to offset carbon emission from both planning and landscaping perspectives. This research demonstrates how urban green reserves, being a vital land use component in the urban area, is effective in carbon sequestration to absorb and store carbon emission for an extended term. Through the natural process of photosynthesis, mature trees planted in urban green reserve and open space can act as a carbon sink. This research computes the volume of carbon sequestration of trees planted in urban green reserve and the open space within the study area. Through this study, the accurate allometric relationship for the total above-ground biomass with the tree diameter and height was developed to estimate the rate of carbon sequestration in Pasir Gudang. The results based on mature trees inventory revealed that the total amount of carbon sequestration contributed by both urban green reserve and open space were 2,238.183 tons of carbon per year. Within the design parameters of the case study area, the total contribution of carbon reduction was merely 3.15% per year compared to the target of 10% carbon reduction via carbon sequestration. The total balance of carbon reduction that needs to be offset via carbon sequestration is 6.85%. Therefore, there is a need to provide smart planning and consolidating of low carbon initiatives to increase the contribution of carbon sequestration for a healthier environment in the urban area.
