FOREWORD ILAM PRESIDENT
FOREWORD PLATINUM SPONSOR
The Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards was initiated in 2007, in conjunction with Malaysia acting as host for the IFLA World Congress 2007. In the beginning, the award was created to acknowledge outstanding landscape architecture professionals for their design works. As time went by, we began to see that landscape architectural practices should cover the whole value chain, from developers, to contractors, suppliers, government agencies, city councils, researchers, students, and the media. Hence, MLAA has grown from a humble award programme to the most prestigious landscape architecture awards for the industry to date, in Malaysia.
Heartiest congratulations to the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia for successfully organising the 10th Malaysian Landscape Architecture Awards this year. This is a great milestone and we applaud you for your dedication in creating a great platform that reminds industry players to not rest on our laurels and to continuously set higher benchmarks in the field of landscape architecture in Malaysia.
MLAA evolved and grew every year - from 2 categories in 2007, to 11 categories today, which cover the entire spectrum of the Landscape Architecture industry. The submissions grew more than 4 times, from 38 submissions in 2007, to 164 in 2017. The awards also set local design trends each year and navigate the industry, in line with ILAM’s Landscape Architecture Agenda 2050. ILAM sees the award not only as a recognition from within the industry, it has also set the benchmark for the industry, and influences the creation of new design trends and thinking. The awards have benefited the winners in every aspect of the business, both professionally and personally, and throughout all facets and layers of the profession. Our strong publication history and ongoing media exposure, which recorded a value of over RM6 million, in 2017, has also elevated this profession to the next level. Beyond the horizon, we envision MLAA going beyond our borders, to become the most prestigious landscape architecture award for the ASEAN region and beyond. We at ILAM would like to thank our Platinum Sponsor, Gamuda Land for making this publication possible and for providing continuous support to ILAM over the past 10 years. We hope you will continue making our living environments conducive for all to make your dream designs our dream homes. Thank you.

This is in line with our development principles at Gamuda Land where one important aspect of our town making is listening to what the land has to tell us. That means working with what nature provides and blending nature into our planning and neighbourhoods to seamlessly integrate the natural with the man-made to improve liveability. Right from the beginning, we have decided that all of Gamuda Land’s towns will have a central park, where the community can come together, and get to know each other. To date, we have created more than 1,000 acres of park land and lakes in our developments. Before we crafted each park; we looked at their natural attributes, studied how the land rose and fell, where the waterways flowed and the types of trees and plants that grew there. We maintained the good attributes that the land offers, enhanced what needed help and blended them into our neighbourhoods and town centres. That has been our nature for the past 25 years. But, we are not stopping here. Our new land bank of nearly 2,650 acres gives us the opportunity to renew our commitment, step up our efforts and make our environments better and more sustainable. We have recently set up Gamuda Parks, an initiative where we put together a group of experts to implement continuous improvement ideas for the maintenance of the greens within our towns and high-rise developments. Currently, one of the main agenda of Gamuda Parks is to formulate a Biodiversity Policy and kick-start a biodiversity audit as scientific measurement of liveability and habitability of the environment in our new towns – Gamuda Gardens and Gamuda Cove. We are excited to provide a more conducive living experience for our communities and to play our part in promoting a balanced ecosystem in our towns.

“It is a dream come true when you are involved in projects that are really challenging in so many aspects. Above all, I am able to combine everything that I have pursued and dreamt of all this while - taking small steps to make big changes” Syamim has a vision that is driven by one passion; making our city echo with the people; a city that is sustainable; with nature in mind, and responsive to the local ecosystem. After completing her first degree from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), she started her career at Clouston Design Sdn. Bhd. before joining WDI Design Sdn. Bhd. a year later. Committed to focusing on what matters to the public, namely achieving sustainable designs, Syamim began making small steps to achieve her dreams. She took the step of pursuing her Master’s Degree at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in Urban Design and Planning in Built Environment after three years of working as a Landscape Architect. Her major research looked into the topics of “Eco Public Art and Back Lanes Revitalisation for Laman Seni 7 Shah Alam. Her research focused on the topics of “Eco Public Art” and “Back Lanes Revitalisation for Laman Seni 7 Shah Alam”. Each project was aimed at revitalising spaces through art. Today, her efforts have come to fruition with a new public space which incorporates modern and sculptural art in Shah Alam. Syamim’s research was also acknowledged as the best research for a Master’s Degree, selected as the 2016 Postgraduate Valedictorian and was awarded the Excellence Award under Researcher Categories in MLAA2016. Achieving sustainability and transforming the concrete jungle into green cities has always been Syamim’s biggest ambition as a Landscape Architect. However, in today’s challenging world, she understands, in order to achieve this goal, she must engage with the appropriate parties in order to create innovative solutions and to work together to reach desired results. Starting with small steps from doing research that lead her to expand her network with additional expertise, she began to engage with the Local Authority such as Shah Alam City Council and Kuala Lumpur City Hall, local NGOs such as Think City, Public Art Activist, together with Local Universities, in order to create innovative solutions towards solving environmental issues in several public art programmes. Spreading her wings to venture into academic lines to increase her knowledge, and expanding her network into other professions to bring Landscape Architecture to another level is her current cause. Apart from that, Syamim was invited to be a speaker and share her experience with students all across Malaysia, such as at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UTM) and Politeknik Merlimau, Melaka. Following that, she was also one of the judges for the Kuala Lumpur International Orchid Bonsai Show, 2017. Syamim believes there is no profession quite like landscape architecture, which can apply the knowledge of science and art into practical purposes, creating outdoor spaces in which humans may live. It was one of her greatest achievements to date to represent the ‘Young People Lab’ and present their original proposal, at the World Conference of Sustainable Cities 2017. This was a career defining moment as she was invited by the Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP) to present the proposal during a private event with HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, at the Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. Currently working with AECOM Malaysia, an American multi-disciplinary firm, as one of the Project Landscape Architects in the Design Planning and Economics Department, Syamim has expanded her portfolio by being involved in the biggest project in Kuala Lumpur City Centre - The River of Life Phase 1 – which was launched by the Prime Minister in September 2016. She is now moving forward as one of the Package Leaders for the River of Life Phase 2 development.

MLAA2017 YOUNG LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT AWARD WINNER
“Starting my own business in a creative industry was both exciting and completely overwhelming. In my early years in the business, I realised there’s a need to understand different perspectives in landscape architecture practice in order to have a better understanding of the profession as a whole.” From the beginning of his career, Zaedi worked with one of Malaysia’s best landscape consultant firms, Landart Design Sdn Bhd. Following that strong start, Zaedi moved to CDA Urban Scape, as a fully-fledged Landscape Architect. While there, he was promoted to Associate Director for his successful completion of several projects, alongside his team. Later on, Zaedi set up his own firm in landscape design, before venturing into a full landscape architect consultant business. As a Managing Director of LARZ Associates Sdn Bhd, he shares his experience, knowledge and expertise with clients, and offers them something more. His partner in the company and in life, Zaedi’s wife, Norain Mohamed Ayem, works as Creative Director and advises on conceptual and research work of each design project. In 2017, Zaedi lead his team to win a Gold Award during the Hari Landskap Johor 2017 Competition at Sireh Park, lskandar Puteri. They also received a Silver Award for Landscape Architect Garden Display at the Kuala Lumpur Orchid and Bonsai Show (KLOBS). Not only for his achievements in the landscape industry, his contributions towards alumni development in UiTM have brought him a profound level of respect by being awarded with UiTM Perak Alumni Icon 2017 Category: ‘Outstanding Young Alumni’ and Alumni Icon ‘SEROBOK’ during the Landscape Architecture Design Students (LADS) Gathering Programme, UiTM, Perak. Besides that, in order to give back to the industry, Zaedi was invited as an external speaker to share his extensive knowledge about Landscape Architecture with students following the Degree in Architecture (Semester 5) UiTM, Perak. He was also a guest speaker for ALAM 9 (Assembly of Landscape Architecture Malaysia) UiTM, Perak. Additionally, Zaedi worked as a member of the Assessment Panel for the Landscape Design Studio at Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL), and as a participant member of the Development Panel of National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS). Zaedi always believes that one should be passionate about giving back to one’s profession, by building a strong network with landscape architects, multiplying our impact, and transforming the environment, local communities and the national economy. He believes that by enhancing landscape architecture visibility, we can elevate our industry higher and play an influential role in national development.

The development was envisioned and focused on community living with therapeutic presence in mind; a low-density oasis where healthy well-being would be the first order of things; an environment where tranquil homes would be interspersed with harmonious landscaping; a sanctuary where residents could come home to an environment of luxurious calmness and repose. The concept of creating a cohesive development focusing on community living and the flow of good energy or “Qi”, helps to enhance the residents’ well-being and lifestyle. The flowing movement of “Qi”, from active to passive, inspired the design. In addition, the results from the environmental sensitivity study also helped to define the perfect activities for each specific area. With the presence of both elements, the spaces can be configured according to therapeutic principles.

The natural hillside and wonder of nature, replete with trees, a waterfall, streams, rocks and soft moonlight became the inspiration for the creation of the unique space called Azelia. Azelia Residence is part of a new development in Damansara Avenue, with the master planning concept for the entire development based on the urban forest concept. Due to being located on the hilly slopes of Bandar Sri Damansara, once covered by tall trees & wild bushes, the landscape design intends to preserve the original value, with slight enhancements, in order to blend holistically with the surrounding architecture. As a result, the design compliments the natural backdrop and brings out the best of the surroundings by showcasing the reflection of nature’s elements in every single detail.

The Leafz is a breakthrough in design and functionality, adapting the marvels of technology in the many aspects of our lives, into our homes. Imagine a home that indulges your every whim and notion. From world-class facilities that are available right at your doorstep, to breath-taking landscape visual experiences. Adapting green practices, The Leafz merges green technology and art to create a serene and healthy environment for its residents. Return to nature and indulge in a flourishing life at The Leafz. The landscape concept is inspired by the morphology and anatomy of leaves, of which the midribs and venation are highly emphasised with simple lines and textures. The entrance structure is designed as the vein of the bird nest fern, with the carriageway design highlight resembling the veins of a banana leaf. A linear park, designed in the shape of the midrib of a leaf, is an elevated boardwalk, with the arrangement of shrubs in vein-like positions. Both ends of the boardwalk have 2 small “leaf plazas. The 50-metre infinity lap pool at level 28 overlooks the city skyline. A leaf-shaped viewing deck, with a glass floor, in the sky gym, illuminated in blue, makes the sky deck an outstanding feature from afar.

Teega Puteri Harbour boasts a modern contemporary and a holiday-resort style environment with a breath-taking home-coming experience where you can enjoy premium views of the private and public marinas, as well as the adjacent linear park. Apart from experiencing the expansive views from the balcony, residents can enjoy the ‘sky park’ on the 27th floor, lifestyle offices, retail, food and beverage outlets amidst lush green garden settings as 60,000 sq. ft. of its footprint is reserved for landscape. A symbiotic approach between the towers and landscape is the fundamental concept of Teega Puteri Harbour’s overall design. This has therefore made the modern contemporary and holiday-resort environment more apparent and sensible to the occupants and users. From the composition of hardscape and softscape, selection of plant species, aesthetic value, to functionality, all aspects have been taken into the landscape design consideration which ensures the mutual relationship between the surrounding towers. Geographically, Teega has the ability to diminish the yearning of those who crave a refreshing sea breeze. This favorable opportunity is brought to optimization by the lushness of the softscape and nearby swimming pools.

Verdi Eco-dominium Cyberjaya, Selangor
Verdi covers an area of 9 acres of which a total of 66% of the land area was allocated for landscape spaces, making it one of the most desirable and unique community living environments in Malaysia. The development is comprised of two residential blocks that are surrounded by six acres of greenery. Mimicking rolling hills and lush forestscapes, heavily based on the ‘kampung’ experience, the landscape spaces have narrow footpaths that open up to various clearings, dotted around the buildings to reveal furniture and rest pavilions. Water elements such as water cascades and small pools that double as jacuzzi pads play a significant role in the landscape design. A sizeable area was also allocated for herbs and a vegetable garden. The undulating landform creates opportunities to provide a Central Park that is distinctly separate from the Pool Garden yet connected by the intimate landscape spaces. All these ideas and concepts culminated in a surrounding that is reminiscent of many Malaysian villages. FAR RIGHT Aptly dubbed eco-dominiums, a play of the words ecology and condominiums, the development has two residential towers surrounded by six acres of lush landscape gardens set on an undulating terrain BELOW RIGHT Water elements play a significant role as one of the landscape features, in the form of cascades

‘Sentral Residence’ is a luxury, high-rise residential development of two high-rise towers built around the largest transit hub in Malaysia. The landscape concept is an abstract expression of ‘Rainforest Layers’, from the earth to the emergent canopy, each translated into the 3 main landscape spaces, set in a contemporary urban residence. The main entrance to Sentral Residences is located at Ground level, symbolic of the forest floor with its leaf litter, shady atmosphere and limited foliage. In the same way that the ground beneath the forest is full of life and movement, the design is earthy, with hardier treatments and abstract natural patterns resembling roots, leaf veins and insect trails to link the spaces. The largest area of green space is located at level 2 with a coverage of 0.8 acre. This environmental deck is symbolic of the forest understory layer, the most active layer for growth and habitation by living organisms. Clustering and the use of multi-layered planting compositions are used to mimic the forest canopy ambience. The design layout follows an organic fluid shape allowing for flexible arrangement of facilities. The exclusive Level 55 portrays the forest canopy. This is where the eagles live in their eyries, and symbolises the habitat of the high flyers. This level is elegant and clean. There is minimal planting, due to the strong wind shear and in order to maintain open views towards down town Kuala Lumpur, its skyline and greenery.

Reflecting the surrounding area, the design brings out a luxury urban living lifestyle, capitalising on sweeping views of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre and the lush landscape of the Royal Selangor Golf Club. The concept of “The Borrowed View” was used as the main consideration, taking advantage of the visibility of both KLCC and the RSGC in the landscape design. The concept created a ‘green sanctuary within the fast pace of the city”, a place where “serenity” is achieved within a complex, overlooking the city skyline of Kuala Lumpur. To echo the majestic city’s skyline and its road network, the design uses stripes, straight lines and grid arrangements that mirror the city’s elements. Above all, fengshui characteristics of wood, fire, earth, metal and water were each applied equally in the landscape design philosophy in order to promote a prosperous, peaceful and harmonious environment.

Le Nouvel KLCC Kuala Lumpur
Le Nouvel KLCC is a 195-unit high-end freehold development in Kuala Lumpur, sited opposite the Petronas Twin Towers KLCC. Designed by world-renowned architect and Pritzker Prize laureate, Jeans Nouvel, it features two towers, with vertical green facades of lush greenery. At the summit of each tower, the steel framed reflective mirror sky roof leans over a timber deck with vertical green walls and climbing plants on cables serving as a semi outdoor recreational space, with spectacular views. This project is very challenging since it is the highest green façade in the world. Jean Nouvel’s idea was to wrap the 200m and 180m high residential towers with climbing plants. In collaboration with a renowned botanist, the design creates the first botanical garden of the world totally dedicated to lianas, vines and other climbing plants, with 208 different species selected for the task. There are some high climbing species reaching 20m or 30m in height whereas some others are more herbaceous and reach only 5m to 10m, alongside very small species which grow less than 2m in length.

Tall, slim trees are offered on ground areas while the elevated courtyard and gardens are introduced on the first floor, along with facilities such as pools, gym and BBQ areas. All these are connected and accentuated with viewing corridors and view-framing features. One of the introduced features is an external staircase, strategically located within the development that connects garden areas at ground floor to the courtyards and gardens at the first floor. Tucked in the centre of the busy urban township area, The Republic is considered as the first, truly urban sanctuary in Kuching City. This modern residential development consists of 2 blocks of 13-storey condominium units with fully-fledged facilities provided. The landscape design aims to create a ‘retreat’ environment and sanctuary feeling for the residents, thus a green, lush ambience is necessary. To achieve this, carefully selected mature trees were introduced, together with shrubs and ground cover to accentuate the lines of the property. A bold entry statement with a huge mature tree was also introduced to provide a visual landmark for the property and its surrounding area. Other design considerations include landscape accessibility, lighting selection, drainage, irrigation and selection of landscape furniture. Maximising the available space, lush greeneries are paved in all areas including the external basement area, emergency access way using grasscrete and turfing, crucial planting selections within sunken planter boxes in all available pocket areas, which each provide the lush green ambience. A combination of both instant sapling trees and vertical green planting creates a different landscape profile with an immediate impact upon the surrounding environment. Landscape lighting design which also includes façade lighting is used to highlight the sleek architectural lines and creates a subtle presence of brightness, shadow, and contrast.

In 2014, the project finally obtained approval by the local authorities and support from the existing purchasers for revival and was rebranded under the name of Maisson@Ara Damansara. The transformation of Maisson revived the hope of its residents and the neighbouring community. The project fosters strong community ties within and without; by adding value to residents of Ara Damansara through the resolution of social and environmental challenges attributed to its past. The design concept is to bring tradition back to life, recalling childhood memories where everyone roams carefree and barefoot around the neighbourhood, Inspired by the concept from the multi-generational family unit, and harking back to the era of community-focused living, the project was designed to bring the residents out of their homes, to socialise with their neighbours, and to enjoy their surroundings. Inspired by a typical kampung house compound, the landscape spaces for Maisson are divided into four zones, with each zone setting the stage for a variety of interactions between the residents and the public.

Hence, the whole 8-acre site is designed so that the building footprint is enveloped by 5.4-acre green spaces. The tower blocks are oriented facing this central green lung. The design goes hand in hand with the holistic planning concept of creating sufficient social space without compromising the importance of rebuilding and regenerating the green space within an urban ecosystem. With a lush and spacious 2-acre landscape podium on the carpark block at its core, the entire landscape plan was geared towards creating a seamless landscape without a typical separation between floors. The 9.65 metre level difference from the road level to the landscaped podium was mitigated by an environmental solution of a ‘walkable’ terrain. COMMUNITY ENCLAVE
Park Manor Sierramas, Sungai Buloh, Selangor Park Manor community enclave is built as an intimate cozy development, due to a minimum of landscape spaces. Hence, landscape planning focuses on efficiency. All 41 unit homes are connected through the rear, and join a single green network, which leads to the common facilities, which are arranged along the southern boundary. The reason for this is two-fold. Firstly, to allow seamless access for all, via Park Connectors or ‘Street Parks’, and, secondly, to provide a buffer and act as a sound proofing barrier between the residential units and the road, water and rail reserves adjacent to the southern boundary. The design for the internal vehicular circulation network was to treat the roads as a street park. None of the houses are designed with front boundary walls or gates, in order for the landscape to flow, face to face as it were, between the buildings.

Eco Village Setia Eco Gardens Gelang Patah, Johor The Eco Village takes on the challenge to develop residential housing on land which has a steep gradient slope profile. With the development working with existing site conditions, no major earthwork was involved. Hence, Eco Village came naturally, in the most diverse and versatile form; adapting the design to the slope, rather than adapting the slope to the development. This is a medium density enclave that provides housing options with landscape design emphasising green features, an eco-friendly approach, innovation, education, and fostering stronger community ties to rekindle a ‘Kampung’ spirit. Eco Village incorporates 23% green areas, which has 78% for dense tree planting. Diversity of tree species act as carbon dioxide emissions reduction agents, helping to improve air quality, and thermal comfort in outdoor conditions, provide shade, and reduce heat-stress, to make outdoor experiences more pleasant and encourage physical activities for the whole family.

EcoHill Park Semenyih, Selangor
EcoHill Park is a testament to environmentally sustainable development practice. Its design minimised environmental impact to the landforms and life forms in the area during construction, and continues to conserve rare, indigenous flora and fauna, while serving as a community park. As the highest naturally occurring landform in Setia EcoHill, the site for EcoHill Park was viewed as the most premium and valuable site for development. However, it was decided that EcoHill Park should be given back to the community, and nature, and made central to Setia EcoHill’s concept – one that fully encapsulates healthy, green living for all. EcoHill Park is freely open to the public, and rightly so, offering a 360° view of Semenyih. Residents from Setia EcoHill and nearby communities may also enjoy the park as a family-friendly recreational centre, and, through the park, will be provided with environmental knowledge to cultivate common values, and most important of all, create fond memories together.

Sibu Town Square Public Park Sibu, Sarawak
Sibu Town Square is a land-fill, 16-acre mixed development project with integrated commercial, office, hotel, condominium, and park development, located in the heart of Sibu Town. This development aims to transform the waterfront and its adjacent areas into a modern, active and engaging centre, while preserving the existing laid-back lifestyle of the town and surrounding areas. The most prominent development component is the public park itself, which aims to create functional spaces and meeting points for all walks of community life, combining both active and passive activities. Hence, an integrated skateboard structure, incorporating a public toilet, playground areas, jogging tracks, shelter, pathways, benches and massive landscape plantings were introduced to the park. The success factors of the park design are the consideration and application of environmental design to existing components, such as the memorial park, river basin, pedestrian connectivity, compound lighting and hardscape design. The overall design recalls waterfront images, with consideration given to elements such as curvilinear pathway patterns which resemble waves; stainless steel railings which appear to be bollards at a jetty; as well as existing floodlight, and mature tree relocation, which thus bring a nautical effect to the finished product.

The Light Canal Park Penang
Although Penang is an island surrounded by water, there appears to be a lack of green spaces due to rapid expansion. Now, land reclamation has resulted in a new piece of land available for greenery. The Light Canal Park is a linear park that connects the ‘The Light’ development along the seafront, and provides a public green space. The green connection includes existing Linear Park which now connects to Queensbay Mall, Karpal Singh Drive, and the George Town UNESCO Heritage area. Part of the design effort was to preserve the local environment; namely, a fishing village, the biodiversity of local flora and fauna, existing mature trees, other environmentally sensitive areas and a canal. Built along a major highway, the trees serve as a green buffer zone, purifying the air, acting as a sound barrier and also provide a continuous recreational space for all to jog, walk, cycle, relax and play. Foresta Canopy Walk Bandar Sri Damansara Kuala Lumpur
Damansara Foresta is a high-rise condominium located next to the Bukit Lanjan Reserve Forest in Bandar Sri Damansara, Kuala Lumpur. It was built on a 150 million year old rainforest, and boasts a spectacular view of the surrounding area. The design intent was for Damansara Foresta to be known as ‘Living in Harmony in Nature’, since it is situated 180 metres above sea level. As such, the location offers views toward the mountain range, cityscape and horizon. The Department of Forestry Malaysia audited the site during the planning stage, deciding to preserve over 3,000 trees on site and ensuring the biodiversity of the environment was maintained. Residents are thus able to experience a natural jungle setting within the compound of their residence, rather than having to travel to a distant forest. The project shows that development can be environmentally sustainable if careful consideration is given during the planning stage.

Developed as a gated residential development at Kuala Selangor, Puncak Bestari 2 is made out of mostly double-story houses with a specially designed park; Puncak Bestari 2 Village Park. The heritage-inspired neighbourhood park consists of passive and active recreational amenities which overlook a stunning lake. The development aims to support life and other lifestyle benefits by providing residents with the opportunity to interact with the natural area and create a landscape that counteracts the decline of green area as population and urban areas continue to grow. Offsetting this decline by building healthy, productive landscapes “at home” is critical to sustaining life. Puncak Bestari 2 harnesses the power of nature by crafting a park that offers wellness features, a wildlife habitat, as well as sufficient green spaces that create a cooling effect. The existing terrain, lively grass and preserved forest present a place which indulges in the connectivity between people and nature, which includes a pristine constructed lake, which complements the surrounding natural terrain, a breathtaking forest, magnificently designed facilities, and lush greeneries.

Masjid Kota Iskandar Iskandar Puteri, Johor
Masjid Kota Iskandar is located at the north-west tip of Kota Iskandar, the Johor State Administrative Centre, in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. It was developed on a 7 acre site adjacent to Bangunan Sultan Ismail (BSI), the State Legislative Assembly building. Since its inception, the design concept of ‘The Mosque is the Garden and the Garden is the Mosque’ has been adopted to embrace Islamic design philosophy. Emphasising a strong ‘Inside-Out’ and ‘Outside-In’ impression between the building and its surrounding landscape, the soft-scape and accompanying water features provide a sense of welcoming and tranquility which encourages contemplation of the relationship between humans, nature and the Creator, Allah SWT. The interplay of green spaces, with flowering and aromatic plants, and water elements, was designed to evoke reactions in the 5 senses of sight, scent, touch, taste and sound. The landscape design of Masjid Kota Iskandar can be divided into four main components, namely, the Garden Portal, the Green Bagh, the open lawns, and the roof top gardens. Islamic tradition positions a mosque not only as a place of worship but also as a centre for community activities. The gardens of Masjid Kota Iskandar have thus become a meeting point for friends before and after Friday prayers. The Green Bagh, which was designed as an outdoor praying area, also serves as a place for relaxation and recreation.

Laman Tun Perak pocket park is one of the initiatives that has been implemented to provide green areas within the city centre. This site was originally a small waterfall, surrounded by tall matured trees and busy streets. However, the aged waterfall was facing deterioration that required urgent attention. To materialise this dream, Kuala Lumpur City Hall took the opportunity to collaborate with ThinkCity Sdn Bhd. This collaboration obtained feedback from users through the Public Engagement Program about the community needs for this pocket space. The designs have taken into account the ecological requirements of the park as the selection of plants echoes the forest ecosystem. This aims to create one of the city’s forests in Kuala Lumpur and to be part of the city’s green network.

Bangunan Ibu Pejabat PKNS Shah Alam, Selangor
In line with the future growth and aspiration, Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Selangor (PKNS) or Selangor State Development Corporation emphasises on sustainable development as the way forward to brand the company among the top developers in Malaysia. Hence, the new PKNS headquarters is the perfect showcase project to demonstrate conceptual capability, and strengthen the new image of PKNS to the public. The building design is centered on permeability, integration and enhancement of site context. The building is designed to be environmentally responsive, energy efficient and complementary to its natural setting. However, such a massive building requires external soft treatments to fit with the adjacent Shah Alam Lake Gardens, so that hard and soft-scapes can co-exist in an harmonious way. The landscape concept follows the architectural approach where the richness and diversity of Selangor’s cultural, natural elements and heritage are abstracted into the landscape design. For example, aerial roots of mangrove trees influenced the design of the main landscape components, such as the flowing paving pattern, pathway shapes, hard landscape furniture and water features. While the oval shaped planters and shelters are an abstraction of the leaves and seeds of mangrove trees. The main feature of the building is obviously the sweeping roof profile which allows the public to walk from the lake garden at ground floor level, to the roof garden, via the inclusive design for all ages and abilities. The landscape space presents a proper garden space design instead of merely a turf planting rooftop. This distinct and unique character has become a landmark development and an iconic space for Shah Alam. 132

HELP University Subang 2 Shah Alam, Selangor HELP University’s (HU) Subang 2 campus is part of a 23 acre site located at the doorstep of the upcoming Kwasa Damansara, which is undergoing a massive commercial transformation, supported by substantial infrastructure investments such as the MRT Sungai Buloh station. The challenges for the Landscape Architects was to create an interesting and inspirational landscape environment in the campus, to make spaces more cozy and conducive for students. The concept is to design space as a ‘Green Catalyst’, where a carefully landscaped setting can enhance creativity, facilitate social interaction and collaboration, and provide an opportunity to generate new ideas and innovate new solutions. The landscaped spaces also create sanctuaries for congregation, recreation, imagination and quiet contemplation. The design approach, ‘bringing the inside out’, reconnects the interior spaces of the building to the exterior, while successfully knitting the site into the existing fabric of the campus. Different spaces are layered to create transitional spaces, to adjust people’s mood while they move through the spaces; every turn creates visual surprises as each space has its own individual character with carefully selected vegetation playing a leading role. The landscape design creates a multitude of opportunities to bring people together by providing the social infrastructure to create places for people. The large outdoor courtyard was also specially designed to cater for a range of activities, for student needs, such as Orientation Days, parties, spontaneous meetings, mini concerts, festive occasions, and other important events in the life of a tertiary institution.

The entire project site is 98 acres and it sits on poor peat swamp land, distinctively well known for its ground settlement characteristics. The landscape architecture design challenges, to overcome peat swamp ground characteristics, achieve GBI status, ensure ease of maintenance and water conservation were part of the design concept, which was to attempt to achieve an ‘oasis’ amidst the swamp environment surrounding Sibu. There was also the requirement to fulfill the needs of end users, with functional, landscaped spaces, and environmental ambience conducive to teach, learn, study and meditate. The hardscape, water elements and soft landscape elements compliment and flow seamlessly, integrated within the iconic modern architecture. Using the natural, existing landscape, along with the infused concept of the “Tan Kah Kee architectural style, further adds value and meaning to the site which is conveyed into the landscape story for the campus. The landscape approach is to bring more positive expansion to the nearby development of the Sunsuria city. The campus configuration and design context has been ecologically planned to echo the same environment of Xiamen University in China, emulating the Identity, Strength, Reputation and Character of the institution. The journey begins from the Grand Lawn, where one is greeted by the Palm Boulevard and Grand Steps, before entering the Academy block, highlighting the panoramic signature academic building as a centre-piece. The transition then flows to the back of the Academy, complimented by the breath-taking view of the central lake, bridges and soothing landscaping, paired alongside the preserved green. For the end user, such as the students, they can jog and cycle around the lake, while on a warm, sunny day, they can bring kayaks onto the clean waters of Fu Rong Lake, to enjoy the enormous and clear expanse, which cools and refreshes. Big Dutchman Bukit Raja, Klang, Selangor
Big Dutchman Agriculture Sdn Bhd is a global livestock equipment company that operates in the international arena. Its ‘Brick by Brick’ relationship metaphor lies in its commitment to traditional values of building a community, whereby making connections becomes synonymous with building a business. The Klang Campus draws from its European origins by breaking the mould in Bukit Raja as an Industrial Facility set in a lush, green, landscaped environment. It builds on a low plinth ratio, adopts a human scale approach to large scale Warehouse Operations and maintains a low carbon footprint in a green-friendly and sustainable environment. The landscape design incorporated the design of the architectural façade which uses bricks as the main material, to create a rustic design with a touch of contemporary flavour. The concept of ‘Brick to Basics’ is chosen to best illustrate the landscape intention, by creating a landscape design which is seamless throughout the development, and creates venues the company can use for events, functions & relaxation. Due to space limitations, the rooftop of the main corporate building is also used as a garden.

Tamarind Square Cyberjaya, Selangor
Tamarind Square, named after the Tamarind tree, is a mixed, commercial development, comprising semi-d shop offices and unit garden shop offices, sited on 14 acres of land. The design objective was to break away from the ordinary, to innovate and reinvent the sense of space and belonging with old village charm neighborhood ambience alongside sustainable design that fit with the local context and climate. The concept and theme of Tamarind Square; life happens around an urban village - embraces creative landscaping. A sense of arrival is celebrated by lush, landscaped lattices, hanging creepers, and cooling and refreshing water features. Semi-D Shop-Offices were designed with intimate secret gardens to the side and on the rooftops. Garden Shop Offices were planned around outdoor seating terraces beneath the hanging gardens. The communal courts featured a forest playground, an open lawn, outdoor seating, community amenities and green workshops. The tree-house like, green-clad mesh and steel structures – known as the Pinnacles - were wrapped within usable glass rooms at multiple levels, with layers of connective stairs, creating a unique spatial experience which engages seamlessly with the landscape. Multiple mini wetlands with water plants and a mixture of planting were created to enhance the urban forest ambience with the sound of moving water, while the communal rooftop was planned as vegetable gardens, to promote integration and interaction amongst the community. 142

Star Central Cyberjaya, Selangor
Star Central is a strata commercial development, consisting of 19 blocks of 8-storey offices. The landscape approach was to provide a feeling of walking through a green valley, surrounded by trees and mountains, represented by the office towers. The landscape approach intended to draw the focus to central activity areas, using landscaped islands of various shapes and sizes, with green pockets, seating, and a covered, meandering pathway. These walkways connect the facilities deck, water features and office units. Instead of maximising the entire area for commercial benefit, the percentage for green areas is set at 29% of the property. The Forest Gardens is where jungle trees, such as Syzigium polyanthum, Fragrea fragrans and Alstonia scholaris are planted in clusters to cool the environment. The forest gardens were designed to give a visual impact to the development so that each office tower has a dual frontage.

Kota Seriemas Golf & Country Club Nilai, Negeri Sembilan
Kota Seriemas Golf & Country Club (KSGCC) is located in Kota Seriemas, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. This Clubhouse was built to provide facilities for visitors to the golf course. It consists of several divisions such as a club house, offices, meeting room, golf museum, prayer room, golfer’s terrace (Restaurant) and other amenities. To enliven the concept of ‘English Harmony’, the landscape design was adapted to the English-styled building design and surrounding golf course. The choice of plants and built elements aims to re-create typically ‘English’ settings. The soft-scape idea works to beautify green areas with simple and neat landscape elements in an attractive arrangement. Hence, the selection of plants is a combination of trees with palms, shrubs, groundcovers and grass which takes into consideration soil suitability, climate and local environment. It is also has to be appropriate for easy maintenance and upkeep.

Anjung Neighbourhood Centre Iskandar Puteri, Johor
The Anjung Neighbourhood Centre (Anjung) is a neighbourhood strip mall, providing convenient shopping for the immediate community of East Ledang and the working population of Kota Iskandar. ‘Anjung’, a word taken from the Malay language gives inspiration to the main design concept, ‘Reminiscent of Old Johore/Malayan Charm’. This design concept recalls the elegance of old Johore, namely during the era of Sultan Ibrahim in the 50’s, with reference to its looks, environment, eye-catching ambience and classic, retro features. The vision was to revitalise this neighbourhood strip mall into a thriving urban centre that offers an eco-friendly commercial centre with pocket parks, gathering spaces, a food court, and play area. This concept embarks on its unique landscape journey with features that are interwoven into the very fabric of the development. The mall successfully transforms an abandoned landscape into a dynamic and iconic ‘hipster strip mall’ which incorporates the sustainable impact of introducing luscious landscape architecture. The overall concept emphasises the usage of natural and recycled materials in most of the finishings, with lush trees and shrubs, complete with vibrant and colourful sculptures scattered about the mall.

Gerik is a township rich in natural and cultural resources nestled in the Hulu Perak District. Its strategic location, connecting Perak with Kedah, Kelantan and Thailand, makes Gerik an attractive transit area for locals and tourists. The Landscape Master Plan of Gerik is a comprehensive analysis and study that was formulated based on a sustainable landscape planning approach, using the Suitability Analysis Mapping and GIS methods. Through the concept of Eco Transit (Eko-Sehenti), the master plan emphasises three focus areas that act as the impetus for the development and transit nodes for visitors. The analysis revealed that only these three focus areas (Physical, Environmental and SocialCultural) are suitable for urban and public space revitalisations, as they need to cater for the projected population growth of Gerik. The outer areas which are predominantly villages and natural resources are planned as supporting development areas, with minimal physical intervention. This master-plan is expected to guide the development of Gerik for the next 12 years, where the landscape planning has taken into account the growing population, the increasing needs for public spaces and improved quality of life, and the importance of conserving the natural and cultural resources of Gerik.

The development is a 2,400-acre township situated in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, close to the transportation hub of KLIA / KLIA2. This township, with a target population of 60,000, is based on the concept of Eco-friendly and wholesome living, where residential homes and commercial businesses co-exist within lush, natural surroundings. Residents enjoy resort style living with sports and recreational facilities. Kota Seriemas sets itself the challenge of being able to strike a balance with the natural characteristics of the environment that link 8 lakes over 88 acres to flow across the hills and valleys, creating an open environment of green fields. There is always a lake within walking distance from any residential lot in Kota Seriemas to ensure a natural synergy between the environment and the resort-living concept. The environmental design considers natural lighting to minimise secluded and ‘dark’ spaces while maintaining the total experience of spaciousness. This sense of space and openness is a mandatory requirement due to the adoption of the national landscape policy that requires the inception of CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) into the planning and design stage. Within lush surroundings and verdant green spaces, a tranquil ambience beckons. 35% of the development is dedicated to lush landscapes where each precinct is decorated with its own signature garden.

Teluk Lipat Breakwater Protection System
From 2011 until 2016, Coastal Erosion news grabbed the media’s attention. Subsequently, the government tried to find a solution for the erosion problems at Pantai Teluk Lipat, Dungun Terengganu. The beach is listed among the six severe coastal erosion areas in Malaysia. It is caused by heavy storm waves during the northeast monsoon. Moreover, the area’s aesthetic value has been destroyed by the natural geological process and gives negative impact to the village settlements along the shoreline. Therefore, this project aims to find a solution for coastal management, by using a living breakwater system to reverse the effects of coastal erosion at Pantai Teluk Lipat. This project uses the natural shoreline, which is necessary for sustaining the coastal landscape, and provides a long-lasting and viable sustainable landscape design, alongside recreational facilities for the public and community.

Dioramic Landscape of Kuala Sungai Pontian Besar
Pontian Besar Fisherman Village is located at the fringe of the old part of Pontian town area where 3 main villages form the fisherman’s village which spread from the river mouth of Sungai Pontian Besar. Recently, the rural landscape character of the site has diminished and degraded, mostly caused by over-development. Therefore, a redevelopment strategy to protect the authentic coastal rural landscape and at the same time strengthen the ecological, sociological and economic aspects of the village is addressed, in the planning and design of this project.

Reclaiming Natural & Cultural Landscape of Kampung Mangkuk
The location of Kampung Mangkuk, Setiu Terengganu, is strategically placed between Sungai Setiu and the South China Sea. It is a small Malay village community, consisting of traditional Malay homes, with a population of around 4000 people. Kampung Mangkuk offers a fascinating landscape along its coastline. The population of this village originates from other parts of the region, namely Sumatera, Thailand, and others. Thus most inhabitants are immigrants. ‘Reclaiming natural and cultural landscape’ is the concept inspired by integrating the environmental issues and the unique quality of the cultural landscape of Kampung Mangkuk, Setiu, Terengganu. The coastal erosion and river sedimentation result in vanishing diversity, unity and identity of the local cultural landscape. Thus, to mitigate the problems, the project is based upon soft approaches such as providing riparian vegetation-buffers along the riverbank, using dune rehabilitation with integrated buffer systems, and so on. Through this concept, development is not merely to protect and enhance the identity of cultural landscape, but to provide solutions for environmental issues.

Soft Strategies for Resilience Coastal and River Area
“Resilience by nature” is the concept that integrates resilience and ecological systems within a dynamic landscape and connects the community to their surrounding water bodies. The “soft-strategies” were the method to combat against damage caused by sedimentation in the river and erosion at the coastal areas around Kampung Mangkuk, Setiu. The native vegetation, natural materials and combination with some type of harder shoreline structures (hybrid features) such as eco tetrapods, replanting native vegetation, grass sand dunes, geoxtextile breakwater, geotubes, and coconut coir logs and erosion coir mats, can provide protection to the coastal community from the impact of environmental damage, and also enhance the characteristics of the local cultural landscape.

Recycle Edible Garden Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak
The ‘Recycle Edible Garden’ (REG) project is a community farming project, built on approximately 180 square metres, within the grounds of the As-Siddiq Mosque, Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak. It was implemented as an effort to nurture the spirit of the neighborhood among the community of Taman Seri Iskandar Perdana and the 500 members of the As-Siddiq Mosque. This project helps local communities to improve the quality of life by reducing daily expenses and generating revenue from the sale of cultivated produce. In addition to providing a beautiful environment, it can also improve the quality of the community’s health with planting activities on existing, previously unproductive land, surrounding the mosque. The project incorporates a sustainable approach with the use of a rainwater harvesting system as its main water source, and the use of recycled bottles as planting containers. This gave inspiration to the community to also implement a garden at home.

World Landscape Architecture Month Celebration Hulu Selangor, Selangor
World Landscape Architecture Month is an international program organised by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and is a collaborative effort with the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA). The Hulu Selangor District Council was the first local authority in Malaysia to celebrate the festival in 2016. As one of the local authorities, the objective was to spread public awareness about the landscape architecture profession. The district council held a local community-scale expo comprising seminars, landscape architecture open booths by government bodies and non-government bodies, and fun and interactive games for the community to learn more about landscape architecture via a casual approach. Besides that, the district council also used the weekends in April to implement activities comprised of educational visits to local community gardens, and enhancement courses regarding maintenance of local landscape, to name a few.

Putrajaya Meliponine A Friendly Sustainable Approach Putrajaya
About 40% of Putrajaya is flush with green landscape, crisscrossed by large bodies of water and wetlands. To ensure the substantiality of the green areas in the city, natural resources, such as bees, play an important role to beautify the city via their ability to act as friendly pollinators to improve plant diversity. Putrajaya offers a great food resource for these Meliponines with three critical elements for survival being nectar, pollen and plant resin. Nectar and pollen are collected from flowers. Resin is a substance secreted by plants to heal wounds. Plants such as Antigonan leptopus (Air Mata Pengantin), Salvia sp, Melastoma malabathricum, Zinnia sp., Celosia spicta and Cosmos caudatus (Ulam Raja) are some of the bees’ favourites, for honey production. The bee keeping project started in Putrajaya in 2015. The project is an involvement between the local authority and the five community’s residents. It is hoped that the development of Meliponine in Putrajaya can one day be a reference hub for Meliponiculture practice. Information regarding awareness of having meliponines as a friendly pollinator in the city should be persistently pursued. Parks and gardens will continue to play the role of educating the public about the importance of preserving Meliponine activity in the environment as this also helps to counter climate change and urban heat in Putrajaya City.

Butterworth Fringe Festival Jeti Lama, Butterworth, Seberang Perai
The first Butterworth Fringe Festival (“BFF”) held in August 2015 helped activate the Jeti Lama open space area and introduced local and international performing arts, culture and heritage to Butterworth. The Butterworth Fringe Festival is the major event in the Butterworth Baharu Programme. The event helps to bring prominence to this old quarter of town. The Butterworth Baharu Programme (BBP), an initiative of the Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai and Think City, sets out a framework to revitalise Butterworth. This area flourished gradually since its establishment in the mid-1800s, originally located within the George Town Conurbation (“GTC”). BFF is now the main festival, which is held in August each year. Part of the objective of BFF is to create an annual public & free-to-attend street event which brings art, culture & heritage celebrations to Butterworth, in line with the council’s development of Butterworth Baharu. It is also a place-making programme to activate the old town of Jeti Lama, which is rich in culture and heritage.

NeuPave Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavers NeuPave are not ordinary interlocking concrete pavers which you have seen, walked on, or driven on, every single day. Its true ability is only revealed when it rains. NeuPave is designed in a way to redirect excess water when one’s drain outlet can’t cope with sudden and large amounts of water. As we know, Malaysia is strategically located at the equator, constantly battered by only two seasons, wet and dry, and sometimes, a bit of both. When it shines, it shines and when it rains, it pours. These patterns led us to devise a solution to reduce the impact when the rains strike again. The product is able to cater for 3 main functions; to reduce heat island effect, for storm water management, and rainwater harvesting. Origami Bird Sculpture Playgrounds have evolved with the changing trends of the 21st century. Much like modern architectural landscapes where buildings are designed to be clean and ergonomics, today playgrounds must not only be fun and expressive but also merge aesthetics, form and function into one – making them fun play-scapes for children, as well as creating an iconic structure in new developments. To create an amazing play-scape for Gamuda Central Lake Park, the Bird-like structure took inspiration from origami, the art of paper folding. The design blends play functionality and landscape perfectly, to create a space for little ones to let their imagination and energy run wild. The design allows users to train their cognitive skills by association. By hiding, touching and searching within the space, children can hone their sensory abilities. Of course, there is also enough room and challenges to develop the gross and fine motor skills of all ages. Project Title Origami Bird Sculpture Official Entrant Playpoint Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. Vision Landscape as a base for wellbeing and inspired living, through innovative technology and sustainable values.
Value Landscape architects need to be key players in planning and designing the built environment and take a more influential role to lead and inspire design solutions that will shape our future, for a better living environment for all.
01 VISIBILITY
Landscape architects should be more vocal and engaging in political debate, collaborate and cooperate with related organisations in order to be relevant, influence decision makers and think big.
02
05 SECURITY AND SAFETY
Natural and human threats have escalated in the past decade and landscape architects should play a vital role in designing landscape spaces and places which respond to natural disaster phenomena. These include emergency preparedness, preventing crime via the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) approach, which focuses on preventing vandalism and non-state violence.
RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
CURRENT ISSUES
With massive urbanisation and increase in the world population projected for the next 30 years, it is believed that there will be greater pollution, and we will experience an increase in climate change phenomena, escalating food security issues and a lack of space. Studies show the world population will increase to 9.7 billion from the current 7.5 billion, whilst the projected Malaysian population will reach 44 million by 2050, with more than 90% living in urban areas and cities. Realising the issues and needs that we may face in the future, landscape architects can play a vital role in the country’s development, with innovative planning and design providing better and more inspirational living environments for all.
Our Vision towards the Future
In combatting the increased issues looming on the horizon, the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM) is taking a proactive and bold step, to pave the direction for our professional practice, and to play a more influential role in national development.
A vision for the next 30 years
Landscape Architecture Agenda 2050 (LAA2050) is a 30 years agenda, comprising our vision and 10 Strategic Focus Areas (SFA) required to drive the landscape architecture professional forwards. The initiative framework is in a developmental process until 2020, when it will be implemented in full force, leading to 2050.
210
Landscape architects should safeguard and incorporate effective resource management in each design approach, primarily the fragile environmental components of water, air, food, waste, and natural and sensitive ecosystems, via conservation, preservation and/or rehabilitation efforts.
03 EXPERIENCES AND NEEDS
Landscape architectural design should emphasise on user experience, such as inclusion of local social and cultural values, community engagement and participation in the design process, promote local identity and image, and cater to the needs of the less fortunate via universal design.
04 CONDUCIVE LIVING
Over-population has caused a deterioration in the quality of life, hence, promoting conducive and inspiring living environments should be a key priority for landscape architects. Key strategies include creating more public spaces in urban areas, enhancing blue-green infrastructures (natural and semi-natural landscape elements), promoting food security via urban farming, combatting climate change through design, and promoting thermal comfort in every spatial design.
06 ECONOMIC RETURN
Any form of future project should take sustainable economic value into consideration so as to ensure lifelong durability, generate economic returns for local businesses, cultivate positive socio-economic impact, promote green tourism and benefit the stakeholders at large.
07 HUMAN CAPITAL ENHANCEMENT
The landscape architecture industry should focus on the development of leadership, increased productivity, promoting creativity, originality and skills, encouraging ethical competition, promote diversification and adaptability to changes and become an influential and versatile trend setter. To achieve this and to be significantly visible, the number of landscape architects should be increased.
10
