FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO

From the President and CEO —

2018 has been a tough year and there’s no denying that it was a challenging season on field for both our AFL and AFLW teams. Whilst we acknowledge that the win loss ratio was disappointing, we believe it is not a true reflection of the quality and talent of our players or coaching panels. For our AFL team, the combination of a significant list turnover, our predominantly young age profile and an unprecedented number of injuries resulted in a disappointing outcome of two wins for the 2018 season. In 2015 we communicated our strategy to rebuild the depth of our playing list, and that we would do

Notwithstanding the challenges, there were some really important highlights within the 2018 season. Patrick Cripps had an outstanding season. In addition to being named in the Virgin Australia All-Australian team, he finished fourth in this year’s Brownlow Medal count, and was the winner of the 2018 John Nicholls Medal. Kade Simpson played his 300th AFL game in round 15, being only the fifth player to do so for our club. Paddy Dow received a NAB Rising Star nomination for his Round 14 performance against Collingwood. It was our club’s 7th NAB Rising Star nomination in the past three years. Further, the re-signings of a number of key players is a true ‘show of faith’ in the Club’s process, strategy and vision for the future. At season’s end, there were significant changes in the football department with the appointments of Brad Lloyd as Head of Football,

Len Villani as Football Operations and Compliance Manager, and Andrew Russell as Director of High Performance. For the first time in our 154-year history, we appointed co-captains, Sam Docherty and Patrick Cripps, to lead the team in 2019. We thank Marc Murphy, who has captained the AFL team since 2013 during one of the toughest periods in the Club’s history. Likewise, it was a tough season for our AFLW team, but again, some important highlights resulted. The season started with a near capacity crowd against Collingwood at Ikon Park, with the game attracting the highest television audience of the season. Tayla Harris was selected in the AFLW All-Australian team. Katie Loynes and Breann Moody were joint winners of Carlton’s 2018 AFLW Best and Fairest award. In the inaugural Carlton VFLW season, Darcy Vescio won the Club’s Best and Fairest award, and was the competition’s leading goalkicker. We have also made significant changes in our AFLW program with the appointments of senior

so by going to the national draft to secure, build and develop elite and emerging talent. This year we moved to a more balanced approach between draft and trade.

coach Daniel Harford, assistant coaches Shannon McFerran, Brad Fisher and Steven Salopek, and General Manager of Women’s Football, Nicole Graves. Our club was again written into the history books at this year’s NAB AFLW draft with the selection of

Abbie McKay, making her the AFLW’s first ever father-daughter recruit. Outside of improving our football programs, growing our membership is the most important priority for our club. We are incredibly proud to announce that for the first

We know this year has been challenging, and we genuinely thank each and every one of the 56,005 members who signed up in 2018 and supported our teams throughout the season. Our club’s ‘Biggest #BoundByBlue Thank You’ membership upgrade campaign is an example of our gratitude. Our Carlton IN Business program continues to grow with more than 100 members – the largest corporate network in the AFL landscape. The Carlton College of Sport initiative established in partnership with La Trobe University continues to grow, with 50 students already registered. The Diploma of Sport Development and Coaching is a 12 month program that will be conducted at Ikon Park and is ideal for students seeking a pathway into a career in sport. The Ikon Park Masterplan continues to evolve. We have now finalised the $20m funding agreement with the Victorian State

Government and we continue to work closely with the Federal Government to provide further funding to consolidate Ikon Park as the home of AFLW. The proposed redevelopment will include the construction of elite training and education facilities, as well as providing upgraded match-day facilities, including lights to broadcast standard and a seating capacity of around 20,000 people. Members will hear more about these plans in 2019. Also of great importance and significance is the recent endorsement of our club’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), with the Club now able to begin acting upon committed actions. Our RAP outlines plans to promote reconciliation both internally and across the communities that we operate within, and will be launched publicly next season. We continue to immerse ourselves in authentic community programs and developing our leadership in gender equality. The Carlton Respects program continues to grow and provide awareness to students in the prevention of family violence, and in 2018, reached over

time in the Club’s history, we have signed over 40,000 members before the end of the year. We are confident that with our loyal supporter base, this number will continue to rise in 2019.

1,200 students. We look forward to increasing awareness once again through the two official ‘Carlton Respects’ games in season 2019. Our sponsors and corporate partners have been unwavering in their support. We would like to acknowledge and thank our co-major sponsors Hyundai and Virgin Australia, as well as La Trobe University who have all made long-term commitments to the Club, and also thank our many other corporate partners and

sponsors whose continued support of the Club is appreciated. We would also like to welcome and thank this year’s new partners, with Credit Union Australia (CUA) coming on board as co-major partner to Carlton IN Business, MC Labour as major partner of Carlton Respects and co-major of AFLW, Treasury Wine Estates, Barkly Smokehouse, Grill’d Healthy Burgers and Bioglan, who have signed on for 2019 as AFLW shorts partner, Sumo Energy, Tick Homes and Jeff Banks.

FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO

11

2019 will also see the launch of our updated ‘Blueprint’ – the Club’s strategic plan. The Board and management have been working hard on the development of our strategic priorities and 10 key targets, as we look ahead to 2023.

thank you for your support throughout the 2018 season. We exist for, and because of, our members and we sincerely appreciate your ongoing support and commitment.

To our Executive team and administration staff, thank you for all of your hard work and dedication in what has been another big year for the Club.

From the Coach — FROM THE COACH

On this journey we knew there would be ups and downs.

12

We’re all human – our players, coaches, administrators, Board, members and supporters. It was a testing season and we all rode the wave together. It has been a tough year, some may say a dark year. There has been some challenging realities of age, injury, list turnover and a win-loss ratio. You, our members and supporters, know more than anyone that rejuvenating a football club is hard. It takes time and this year was a brutal reminder of that. But know this, stars do not shine without darkness. Within this ‘darkness’ we can see development, which we believe will allow our ‘stars’ to shine next season and beyond including:

Harry McKay

and

Tom De Koning in complementing

Charlie Curnow - add new recruit

Mitch McGovern into that group and we now have some serious firepower to be excited about in 2019. — The breakaway speed of

Zac Fisher —

Paddy Dow

Who this year was another one of our youngsters to earn a Rising Star nomination. That is now seven nominations in three years, a great reflection of the work by Stephen Silvagni and his recruiting team. —

Patrick Cripps and his maiden All-Australian selection, came fourth in the

Brownlow Medal count, to also go with his second placing in both the AFLPA and AFLCA MVP votes and of course his second John Nicholls Medal. — We have a talented list of players who are committed to the Club, with 10 players renewing their contracts this season in a true show of faith in the Club’s direction and strategy for the future. As we head into 2019, the challenge is for more to share the load across the group. Enter Sam Walsh, Liam Stocker and Will Setterfield – three exciting young talents that we’ll invest time in developing, but all have the opportunity to be part of an elite midfield group at the Carlton Football Club. Unfortunately joint captain Sam Docherty will spend another season on the sideline. Doc is a strong character and we know he will apply himself again in his rehab – he is a determined young man. He’ll continue to lead with Crippa along with the extended leadership group in Murph, Ed Curnow and Simmo. We will also be stimulated by the number of returning players, with the likes of our livewires in Zac Fisher, Matthew Kennedy, Tom Williamson, Lachie Plowman and Caleb Marchbank all returning from long-term injuries next season.

FROM THE COACH

— The emergence of

13

Our exciting youngsters in Paddy Dow, Lochie O’Brien and Tom De Koning, who all made their debut this season, will head into their second year with a solid year’s worth of experience under their belt.

FROM THE COACH

Add to that our heart and soul players like Marc Murphy, Matthew Kreuzer and our beloved veteran Kade Simpson, who astoundingly will head into his 17th AFL season in 2019.

14

With new recruits Mitch McGovern, Alex Fasolo, Will Setterfield, Nic Newman and our draftees Sam Walsh, Liam Stocker, Finbar O’Dwyer and Ben Silvagni – that is an exciting injection of talent that will give us a real uplift next year. There’s a lot to be excited about as a Blues fan. Now it’s time for phase two Bluebaggers, let’s continue this ride together. Our football team is tight-knit, more so than ever after this year – they are a group we love coaching and a group with bonds that have been established at a young age which will serve the Carlton Football Club long into the future. The sacrifices their families make to support these players should also not go unnoticed. Before our very eyes this playing group is turning into fine young men and players – Simmo at 34 – is also a part of that too.

To our coaching group: Cameron Bruce, John Barker, Dale Amos, David Teague, Josh Fraser, Shane Watson, Brent Stanton, Jason Davenport and Saverio Rocca and all their partners and families. They are a fantastic group of men to work with and are total professionals. Our players love working with them and the countless hours they put in, day in and day out to prepare our players is appreciated. To our football analysts, the high performance team, list management team, medical and welfare and wider football staff. Thank you. Also, to the administration staff – who always go above and beyond. To our valued sponsors in Hyundai, Virgin Australia, Nike, La Trobe, Ikon and our coaches partner Ontime. A sincere thank you – your support of our club is imperative. Lastly to Louisa my wife, my children Ned and Rosie. I thank them enormously for their unconditional support. I know at times – if not all the time – I ride the emotional rollercoaster of AFL footy. Admittedly, I’m still working out the balance, but I cannot thank them enough for always being there for me. And above all, to our members and supporters. You continually stick by us. You’re the lifeblood, the best fanbase in the AFL and

FROM THE COACH

we ultimately play for you. — 15

A win against the old enemy is always a moment to savour for Carlton supporters – and that’s exactly what they did when the Blues defeated the Bombers at the MCG in Round 8. In front of nearly 45,000 spectators at the home of football,

Carlton held on to win the game by just over two goals, securing the four premiership points and the coveted Madden Cup. It was the 22nd time the sides had fought it out for the Cup, which is named in honour of brothers Justin and Simon Madden, who played

With only one point separating the teams at half-time, the Blues were more accurate in front of goal, pilling on eight goals and five behinds in the second half compared to the Bomber’s five goals, nine behinds. Fittingly, members of Carlton’s 1968 premiership team were invited to the match as guests of honour, as the Club celebrated the 50th anniversary of its grand final win over Essendon. The game also marked a number of significant milestones for those on the field, with Darcy Lang recording his first appearance for Carlton. Recruited from the Cats via last year’s trade period, the elusive small forward booted a goal with his first touch in the navy blue.

710 games between them for Carlton and Essendon.

Lang was also one of six players to notch up their first victory for the Club, alongside Paddy Dow, Lochie O’Brien, Aaron Mullett, Jarrod Garlett and Cam O’Shea.

The Curnow brothers combined to put on a show, with high-flying forward Charlie Curnow kicking three goals, while his brother Ed kicked two goals and laid 13 tackles. Midfield bull and this year’s John

Kade Simpson —

Blues veteran Kade Simpson cemented himself as Carlton royalty when he ran out for his 300th AFL game against Port Adelaide in Round 15 this year. The 34-year-old became one of just five Carlton players to have completed the 300-game milestone, joining club legends John Nicholls, Bruce Doull, Craig Bradley and Stephen Silvagni. In the lead-up to Simpson’s huge achievement, Carlton’s five 300 gamers gathered for a historic photo at Ikon Park. With the old Gardiner Stand in the background, the moment beautifully captured an iconic piece of club history. Taken at pick 45 in the 2002 AFL national draft and heading into his 17th season, ‘Simmo’ has emerged as one of the league’s most durable players,

“ My first impression [of Simpson] was that he was highly skilled and very shy, but he probably didn’t know then what he was going to turn into – just a wonderful player.” Brad Fisher Former teammate

not to mention one of the Blues’ most beloved clubmen. Always recognisable in his long-sleeved No.6 guernsey, Simpson was appointed as vice-captain under skipper Chris Judd between 2009 and 2014, and Marc Murphy in 2016 and 2017. To celebrate his achievement, members and supporters had the chance to collect a limited-edition Simpson bobblehead before the game, as well as purchase special ‘Simmo300’ merchandise. Teammates and coaches, along with past and present Carlton staff honoured the evergreen defender, singing the little warrior’s praises.

Paddy Dow: NAB AFL Rising Star nominee —

The season opener against Richmond marked Dow’s first time representing the Old Dark Navy Blue, and in front of more than 90,000 fans, the young midfielder collected 11 disposals and laid five tackles in what was a commendable outing. In Round 14 against Collingwood, Dow rightfully earned a Rising Star nomination for his outstanding performance which saw him amass 20 disposals, nine contested possessions and four clearances. The Geelong Grammar alumnus also applied plenty of pressure to his Pies opponents, laying four tackles on the hallowed MCG turf. Affectionately earning his nickname ‘Paddy Wow’ among teammates and Bluebaggers for his on-field agility, Dow ranked first among his Rising Star counterparts for total clearances and second for total centre clearances and total stoppage clearances.

PADDY DOW: NAB AFL RISING STAR NOMINEE

Named Carlton’s ‘Best First Year Player’ at the John Nicholls Medal, Paddy Dow was a shining light for the Blues in 2018. Recording 20 games in his debut year, the 19-yearold showed the Carlton faithful what lies ahead after making a promising start to his AFL career.

Dow added another string to his bow in Round 19 – awarded an AFL Coates Hire Goal of the Year nomination for his spectacular major which helped Carlton seize its win against Gold Coast. In an exciting display, the Blues youngster broke away from the pack and

outpaced his competitors to put through the six-pointer from 45m out on the run. The Bendigo Pioneer product was selected with Carlton’s No.3 pick at the 2017 NAB AFL National Draft. Having captured the attention of Carlton recruiters

with his appearances in the Under-18 All Australian team and the AFL Academy’s contest with the Northern Blues the year before, Dow proved himself a worthy first-round selection throughout season 2018.

Locked in until the end of 2022, the Carlton faithful will no doubt be excited to see what the speedy midfielder will bring come season 2019.

PADDY DOW: NAB AFL RISING STAR NOMINEE

Dow was one of four players to make their AFL debut in 2018, alongside wingman Lochie O’Brien and tall forwards Tom De Koning and Patrick Kerr. He also featured in the Club’s historic, nail-biting triumph over Essendon in Round 8 and kicked two majors in Carlton’s 35-point defeat over Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium.

VFL/VFLW Report —

VFL/ VFLW

49 The years of the VFL and VFLW Blues were similar in many ways, marked by exciting development and growth. Joining Northern as the ‘stateleague Blues’, Carlton entered its inaugural season in the VFLW as one of 10 new teams in the revamped competition. In a sign of what was to come for season 2018, both Carlton and Northern enjoyed their first wins at the same venue on the same day. Come the conclusion of the campaigns, the respective sides

VFL/ VFLW

50 won six games each for the year, enjoying particularly strong ends to 2018. After a difficult year impacted by AFL injuries, the Northern Blues closed the year out with four wins in their final six games. It saw the Blues end the year as one of the form sides of the competition. Once again, it proved to be a pathway for emerging AFL-listed talent, in a year where 33 of Northern’s 54 players were aged 21 or under.

The likes of Tom De Koning, Patrick Kerr and Lochie O’Brien were among six players who started in the VFL this season before going on to make their Carlton debuts. The VFL Women’s side also ended the year with a bang, showing up some of the competition’s best on the way to a seventh-placed finish. Undeniably, the highlight of the year came in the final game of the season, where Darcy Vescio single-handedly stole the show against Essendon.

VFL/ VFLW

51 She kicked the opening nine goals of the game to not only inspire her side to victory, but also claim the competition’s goalkicking award. The inaugural VFLW best and fairest went the way of Vescio, who overtook VFLW captain Kristi Harvey and AFLW-listed Tilly Lucas-Rodd for the honour. All in all, 2018 saw the foundations established for both the VFL and VFLW Blues.

Capping off a truly remarkable season, it came as no surprise when Patrick Cripps was announced as the 2018 John Nicholls Medallist. In front of more than 800 guests at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, ‘Crippa’ was crowned with his second best and fairest after claiming the award as a 20-year-old in 2015. It was a clear win for the midfielder who amassed 166 votes across 22 games. The evergreen Kade Simpson polled 108 votes to place second and the Curnow brothers tied for third spot on 98 votes each. As well as receiving the top honour, Cripps took home two club awards, including the Bill Lanyon Ruthless Award and the William A. Cook trophy – given to the best and fairest player as voted by Carlton members.

The 23-year-old was also recognised for his outstanding season and claimed a number of industry awards. The new skipper was bestowed with his first All-Australian jacket, placed second in the AFLCA Player of the Year award and tied for fourth in the Brownlow Medal count, not to mention he amassed the most contested disposals by a player in a home-and-away season (388). Speaking with club historian Tony De Bolfo as he exited the stage, Cripps said winning the John Nicholls Medal for a second time was very special. “ These things are actually really hard to win and it’s a great honour to win it a second time. However, the real stuff is team success, and that’s what really drives me,” he said.

“ I do a bit of extra stuff to make sure the body is in good shape to play each week. The form was pretty good this year,” he said.

“ I really enjoy playing footy and the contested stuff, and the clearance work is something I really pride myself on. You just have to front up and keep fighting.” Veteran defender and runner-up Kade Simpson showed no sign of slowing down in 2018. Having signed on for another year at his beloved Blues, ‘Simmo’ ranked seventh across the league for

“ I’ve been lucky enough to do this for 16 years and I’m going into my 17th, so I think as I get older and know that the end is closer than the start, I want to make every second count. The older I get, the more I enjoy training hard and staying fit. Every game I cherish as if it’s going to be my last.” It was only fitting that the inseparable Curnow brothers tied for third place. Ed’s reliable tagging in the midfield placed him eighth across the league for tackles per game (6.6), while forward Charlie impressed with five bags of three-plus goals and ranked No.1 at the Club for contested marks.

The younger Curnow said his big brother has always been a positive influence on him. “ I’ve looked up to Ed since I was a lot younger. Having an older brother play AFL who fought out his career and forged himself and made a name for himself, he earnt a lot of respect along the road,” Curnow said. “ I’ve learnt off him what hard work is about.” Ed returned the praise to his little brother.

The course also has a strong strength and conditioning component where students will apply their classroom learnings in a fully equipped gym facility on-site at Carlton Football Club.

The program is targeted towards those leaving high school, or individuals with some entry-level experience, in the sport and recreation industry seeking to gain their first formal qualification in sport coaching and development. Students will undertake four subjects per semester, with 12 to 16 hours of class time or club-related activity each week – this will generally be spread across three days a week. Upon successful completion of the Diploma, graduates are eligible for entry in to the Bachelor of Sports Coaching and Development at La Trobe University, with the first group of students to begin study in March 2019. For the first time in Carlton’s 154-year history, joint captains were appointed to lead the Old Dark Navy Blues, with AllAustralian Patrick Cripps and 2016 John Nicholls Medallist Sam Docherty taking the helm in 2019.

The historic announcement was unveiled in front of more than 800 guests at the Club’s best and fairest in October, as long-standing captain Marc Murphy declared he was stepping down from the position after six years.

It proved to be a big night for Cripps, who after recording another career-best season, also claimed his second John Nicholls Medal. Speaking at the time, the 23-year-old said captaining the Blues is a true privilege.

“ This honour is incredibly special. Playing footy at the highest level for one of the biggest clubs in the competition is huge in itself, but when you think about being named captain of the Club, it’s probably something you could never really dream of. It’s surreal but a huge honour,” Cripps said.

“ I try and lead by my actions, and I really believe that leadership is something you can’t master, but you always try to improve. So the biggest lesson I learnt this year in that stand-in role was to lead by being true to yourself.” While ‘Crippa’ impressed on the field, Docherty turned his

talents to coaching after being sidelined with an ACL injury – a challenge he will unfortunately face again this season. Embracing the opportunity to work alongside Brendon Bolton’s coaching team, he was able to have a positive impact on the group throughout the season and will no doubt do the same next year.

“... our common goal to take this club back to sustained success.”

As a boyhood Bluebagger, the 25-year-old could only reiterate ‘Crippa’s’ sentiments.

“ Clearly the joint captaincy is a new direction for the Club, but both ‘Crippa’ and I have sat down and had really honest chats about how we’re going to take this group forward together. Despite our various differences in personality and approaches to leadership, we complement each other well and the main thing for us is our common goal to take this club back to sustained success.” The duo’s passion, drive and enthusiasm to lead this side into the next phase of its development is there for all to see, as the Blues look to honour the past, and own the future. “ It’s a big club with such a rich history, with some legends who have been captains of the Club themselves and we’re lucky enough to now join our names to that list of leaders, which is an incredible privilege,” Docherty said.
