8 Message from the President & CEO

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO As we head into AFLW 3.0, as a club we look forward to a promising 2019 season from our Game Changers. Following significant changes in our AFLW program, which saw the appointment of senior coach Daniel Harford, the recruitment of assistant coaches Shannon McFerran, Brad Fisher and Steven Salopek, as well as General Manager of

Women’s Football Nicole Graves, the Blues have added depth and experience to a side that is eager to make a mark in 2019. With the Club acquiring talented recruits via the 2018 NAB AFLW Draft, there are a number of new and exciting players to keep an eye on in season 2019. With pick 16, Carlton was again written into the history books with the selection of Abbie McKay, daughter of Premiership player Andrew, making her the AFLW’s first father-daughter recruit in the competition’s history. Fittingly, Abbie will also wear the same No.5 guernsey made famous by her father. Adding to the list of players to watch out for in 2019 is our AFLW 3.0 six-player leadership group, led by Brianna Davey who will captain the Blues for a second consecutive season. Bri will be supported by newly appointed vice-captain Katie Loynes and fellow leaders Shae Audley, Darcy Vescio, Sarah Hosking Kerryn Harrington. Katie steps into the vice-captaincy role following two stellar seasons in the navy blue. Our club’s joint AFLW best and fairest winner last season, 32-year-old Katie possesses a wealth of experience that will prove invaluable in guiding the side’s exciting young talent. First time inclusions Darcy Vescio, Shae Audley and Kerryn Harrington join Sarah Hosking,

who remains in the leadership position from 2018. As we prepare for the upcoming season, we are excited to be the first club to take on newcomer North Melbourne in the AFLW competition, travelling to Tasmania for our historic Round 1 clash at North Hobart Oval. We will once again be part of another moment in the competition’s history and it will be a great opportunity for our playing group to hit the road in Round 1 and connect with our members and supporters in Tasmania. The Club will then return to Melbourne for its first home game at Ikon Park in Round 2 against Adelaide on Sunday 10 February. In total we will play three games at the home of women’s football – Ikon Park – also taking on traditional rival Collingwood on a Saturday night in Round 5, as well Brisbane in Round 6. As a club we remain steadfast in our commitment and approach to ensuring Ikon Park remains the home of AFLW. Having received $20 million from the Victorian State Government as part of the Ikon Park redevelopment, the Club will continue to work with the Federal government in seeking its support to ensure the facilities at the home of AFLW provide the best environment for all our athletes – ensuring Ikon Park continues to be cemented as the home of AFLW football.

We know 2018 was a challenging year, and we genuinely thank each and every one of the 56,005 members who signed up in 2018 and supported our teams throughout the season. Our ‘Biggest #BoundByBlue Thank You’ membership upgrade campaign is an example of our gratitude.

10 Message from the President & CEO

Off-field, the Club recorded an improved financial result for the fourth consecutive year, and it is also the second year in a row Carlton has generated a net profit. Significantly, the strong result was achieved in a year in which the Club invested an additional $1.6 million into its football department to support both its AFL and AFLW programs into the future, as well as introducing a VFLW team to support the development pathways for young girls to follow their dream of playing in the navy blue. To experience such growth despite a challenging year on-field is a terrific sign of the stability of the Club across the board. We have remained steadfast in our commitment to invest heavily into our football department to ensure our AFL and AFLW programs have every opportunity to succeed. Outside of improving our football programs, growing our membership is the most important priority for our club.

From a commercial perspective, we are delighted to welcome Bioglan who have signed on for the next three years as a platinum partner of the Club’s AFLW team, with the partnership bringing further growth on and off the field to the AFLW program. The Carlton College of Sport initiative established in partnership with La Trobe University continues to grow with 50 students already registered. The Diploma of Sport Development and Coaching is a 12-month program that will be conducted at Ikon Park and is ideal for students seeking a pathway into a career in sport. Also of great importance and significance is the recent endorsement of our club’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), with the Club now able to begin acting upon committed actions. Our RAP outlines plans to promote reconciliation both internally and across the communities that we operate within and will be launched publicly this season. We continue to immerse ourselves in authentic community programs and developing our leadership in gender equality.

The Carlton Respects program continues to grow and provide awareness to students in the prevention of family violence and in 2018 reached over 1200 students. We look forward to increasing awareness once again through the two official ‘Carlton Respects’ games this season.

As we prepare for season AFLW 3.0, we would like to once again thank you for your support throughout the 2018 season. We exist for, and because of, our members and we sincerely appreciate your ongoing support and commitment.

2019 will also see the launch of our club’s strategic plan. The Board and management have been working hard on the development of our strategic priorities and 10 key targets, as we look ahead to 2023.

GO BLUES!

Our sponsors and corporate partners have been unwavering in their support and we would like to acknowledge and thank Hyundai and Virgin Australia our co-major sponsors – and La Trobe University who have all made a long-term commitment to the Club and our many other corporate partners and sponsors whose continued support of the Club is appreciated. We would also like to acknowledge our major partner of Carlton Respects and co-major of AFLW MC Labour, co-major partner to Carlton IN Business Credit Union Australia (CUA). We’d also like to thank our Platinum partners Ikon Services Australia, Visy and Grunt, as well as our gold and foundation partners, along with our official suppliers of the Carlton Football Club.

We look forward to seeing you at the footy in 2019.

MESSAGE FROM THE COACH

Message from the coach

Their willingness to learn and throw themselves into whatever our coaching group asks of them is infectious. We were rapt with the players we were able to bring into the football club, but what they’ve done since then is a complete credit to them.

When I was lucky enough to come into this job in May, I didn’t know what to expect. Safe to say, I was blown away by the commitment, energy and positivity from the entire playing group from the outset.

I’m lucky enough to be working with a great team around me, with Brad Fisher, Shannon McFerran and Steven Salopek joining as assistant line coaches for 2019. Having had experience with all of them before this job, I can confidently say they won’t leave any stone unturned in getting the best out of our players. Then, there’s my old mate Andy Maher. He may be the most-serious and committed runner in the history of

the game, but we’ve embraced it and love it!

Ikon Park two years ago and know what it’s like to represent our team.

It’s been a long process since my return to Ikon Park nine months ago.

Our girls may be known as the Game Changers, but the fundamentals of football will still lead the way for us. We’re going to have fun, we’re going to excite, we’re going to compete and we’re going to play for the jumper.

We’ve added to our resources and commitment to the AFLW program with the appointment of Nicole Graves, who is leading the way on the administration side of things. We’ve got a coaching group and staff whose dedication knows no bounds. We’ve got a playing group who will fight until the end for one another. We’ve got Bri and the leadership group guiding the young guns we were so fortunate to bring to our club. We’ve got heart-and-soul players, who ran out in that famous game at

And I’ve got full confidence in this group of girls that they’re going to do the navy blue jumper proud. Time to change the game.

MESSAGE FROM THE CAPTAIN

Message from the captain

Generation W is here and we just can’t wait to get started.

As a playing group, the chance to pull on the Old Dark Navy Blue guernsey for AFLW 3.0 is something we couldn’t be more excited for. A long pre-season has marked a fresh start for our club, from the players to the coaches and staff. From the end of last season to now, we’ve welcomed 11 new players into the locker room on a list of 30. While it’s a significant change, the enthusiasm and excitement that has come through the door has been incredible. Whether it’s the youngsters like ‘Mads’ and Abbie or girls like Kirby and Millie

that have been at different clubs, they have all fit in from the word go. If pre-season is anything to go by, I can’t wait to see what they all have to offer on-field. Speaking of pre-season, what Daniel Harford and his coaching staff have done for the group has been amazing. I think Bluebaggers are going to be really excited by what we’re going to produce on the field. ‘Harf’ has really focussed on the enjoyment of football and I think our fans can expect a more attacking brand of footy in 2019. The care and investment towards our group has been second-to-none, thanks to Harf and Head of Women’s Football Nicole Graves. The onus is now on us — the players and leaders — to make the difference on the ground.

15

Personally, I can’t wait to get back out on the field after coming back from an ACL injury last year. Pulling on the Carlton jumper once again has been a huge driving force for me and I’m looking forward to running out with the girls as we look to make our mark on season 2019. Bring it on!

It’s clear Natalie Plane, Maddy Prespakis and Kirby Bentley share a bond.

to create a supportive environment in the hope of attracting more Indigenous talent to the Blues.

Although they’ve had diverse journeys and all hail from different parts of the country, their connection as Indigenous AFLW players can’t be denied.

With only 12 Indigenous players currently on AFLW lists, they know they’re role models for young girls and it’s a position they’re proud to hold.

From their sense of humour to their unwavering support of each other, the trio have taken it upon themselves

Carlton Media sat down with the trio to find out more about their heritage and ambitions ahead of the third AFLW season.

Firstly, welcome to Carlton Maddy and Kirby, we hope you’ve settled in well. Tell us where your family originates from.

KB

Thank you. I am a Noongar woman from Whadjuk country, which is in the south west of WA. Both of my parents are Aboriginal and my mum’s dad is Irish – so I’ve got a mix of firery blood!

MP

Thanks! I am from Djadjawurrung and that’s in the Bendigo area – that’s on my mum’s side. My dad is actually a quarter Greek, so I’ve got a bit of a different culture and background.

NP

I am a Kamilaroi woman from Tamworth, which is in NSW near the Queensland border. My mum is a Kamilaroi woman too and my dad’s side is English/Irish. 2019 AFLW Season Guide | CARLTONFC.COM.AU

Currently, there are only 12 Indigenous AFLW players, what does it mean to you to be in that exclusive group? There’s not too many Aboriginal women who play at this level, so I think it’s really cool that I can be a role model for young Indigenous girls. Last year I got to coach the Kickstart team and they were all young Indigenous girls and I really enjoyed that – I felt like they looked up to me for the path I’d gone down. I think playing in the AFLW competition has allowed me to give back to the community and show these girls that footy is not just for the boys, there’s a pathway for women too. I actually came out of the Kickstart program a few years ago and I mentored some of the girls about the pathways they can take. For me, I just try to be the best role model I can be – I’d just love to inspire these girls and help them achieve their goals. I think it’s invaluable. As you mentioned there’s only 12 of us in the competition which is not many for the amount of talent we have across our game. Although the three of us come from different areas we’re still on the same journey and if we

influence young girls by our actions, then we’ll be able to draw more female players to AFLW and that’s exciting. CM

How important is it to educate and open up to your teammates about your culture?

KB

I think it’s important to share our culture and our sense of humour as it breaks down the barriers. A lot of our teammates and people in general don’t want to ask questions because they don’t want to offend anyone, but it’s OK to ask because it’s something they’re not sure about – if we don’t talk about it, we won’t grow out of it.

CM

Nat you were laughing when Kirby mentioned your sense of humour, why was that?

NP

(Laughs) Between the three of us I think we all have a little connection – especially when it comes to the sense of humour – we just click and that’s been really good.

MP

When the three of us are together it’s just chilled…

NP

Yeah, I think we all have an understanding of what we go through and the backgrounds we’ve had and I think that’s why we have a connection too.

KB

For us, that’s really empowering and for the kids coming through to know they’ll walk into a supportive environment is really important as well, and if we can create that environment at Carlton, we’ll attract a lot of talent which is so important for our club.

CM

Nat, as a foundation player you’ve been at the Blues the longest, how has the Club recognised your heritage throughout your time at Ikon Park?

NP

I know the Club has implemented a RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan) which I was involved in helping create, and they’ve also put a plaque at the front of our change rooms when you walk in that recognises the traditional owners of the land – it’s really nice to see that up there when you walk in.

CM

We’ve also got a number of Indigenous AFL players at the Club, have you had much of a chance to get to know them?

MP

We did see them at a club event and it’s weird, but we tend to gravitate towards each other – I think it’s got to do with the sense of humour again! (Laughs)

CM

If the league was to

19

introduce an Indigenous Round into the AFLW competition, what do you think it should be called?

20

NP

Kirby Bentley Round (Laughs)

KB

I’m not that old yet! I think it would be an empowering female word like ‘Woomeras’, for example, which is a female

thing that we have, anything that represents women, black women and strength – not so much an individual person – something that represents all of us that can also cross over to our teammates. CM

Your families must be really proud of what you’ve achieved so far?

Deadly yarns

KB

MP

Yeah, they are really proud of the journeys we’ve taken.

CM

Will it be a special moment if all three of you got to run out together in 2019?

Yes, definitely. Some of my cousins on the other side of the family play footy and some of them have played AFL and some haven’t, so to see the first female in the family get drafted has been really exciting.

KB

Yeah, definitely, especially because some clubs don’t even have one Indigenous player. To have the three of us at Carlton is wonderful.

NP

I was stoked when I found out these two girls were coming to the Club. What I’ve noticed, having also played a lot of cricket, is it’s very different when you’re surrounded with your sisters, so I knew when they arrived, we’d all have a good time – I can’t wait to run out with them next year.

COACHING PANEL 22

As the Club embarks on its third AFLW season, the Blues’ newlook coaching panel has been working tirelessly to prepare the players for a fierce and challenging competition in 2019. Led for the first time by senior coach Daniel Harford, he’ll be supported by Shannon McFerran

(senior assistant), Steven Salopek (backline), Brad Fisher (forward line) and Adam Dancey (skill acquisition and development coach). With a mix of experience and a diverse range of skills, this team of coaches will be looking to naturally evolve and revitalise the Blues’ AFLW team.

DANIEL HARFORD SENIOR COACH

Since being appointed the senior coaching role in April last year, Harford’s passion for women’s football has only intensified. As a former AFL player – both with the Blues and the Hawks – he has been expertly imparting his knowledge about the game on the players. Making the move from Collingwood’s AFLW side, ‘Harf’ coached Balwyn to a premiership in the Eastern Football League, before also leading St Kevin’s to victory in 2015 in the Victorian Amateur Football Association. “ The girls have been really excited by the new program, so the energy has been amazing and I’ve been appreciative of how they’ve gone about it – you can’t help but fall in love and be intoxicated by it. We’ve been really focused on developing over the course of the pre-season and I’m confident we’ve seen improvements. Shan, Fish and Steve have worked hard to support the players and create a fun environment where they have the best chance to succeed – so we’re all excited for the games to get underway.” @HarfSerious 2019 AFLW Season Guide | CARLTONFC.COM.AU

25

SHANNON MCFERRAN SENIOR ASSISTANT – MIDFIELD

26 Coaching panel

After being appointed as the Club’s inaugural VFLW coach in 2018, McFerran has successfully transitioned into the role of Harford’s senior assistant. Boasting a decorated playing career spanning more than a decade and possessing a strong background in teaching, the 10-time All Australian will continue to have a positive impact on the playing group as she takes charge of the midfield.

“ Carlton has a rich history in the AFL and now in the AFLW, so to be part of a club that has supported women in football from the get go was really important to me. It meant they were genuine in being an inclusive club when the opportunity presented. My grandfather was a huge Carlton supporter as well so I know he’d be proud of me working here. This pre-season I have learnt just how keen the playing group is to succeed and learn. They have a willingness and eagerness to be better and that’s refreshing. I can’t wait to see the girls run out after all the work they have put in this pre-season and be victorious in all that they do wearing the Carlton jumper!” @shannymac10

STEVEN SALOPEK ASSISTANT COACH – DEFENDERS

Coaching the backline, Salopek arrives at the Blues having played 121 games for Port Adelaide across nine seasons. Since retiring from his AFL career, Salopek has remained involved in the football community, coaching and developing young talent alongside Harford at St Kevin’s College.

“ It was a really easy choice to come to Carlton. I love footy clubs with a rich history and I knew Harf from our previous club at St. Kevin’s Old Boys. The enthusiasm and willingness of the girls to learn has been excellent and the professional environment they’ve created is first class. Over the course of pre-season, we’ve been working on defensive spoiling, structure around the contest and ball movement out of defence – so I’m looking forward to seeing the players implement what they’ve learnt when the season begins.” @ssalopek3

BRAD FISHER ASSISTANT COACH – FORWARDS

28 Coaching Brianna Davey panel

Recording 99 games for the Blues between 2003 and 2010, Fisher returns to Ikon Park ready to take the reins of the team’s forward line. Qualified as a Level 2 Coach, the much-loved clubman spent two years as West Adelaide’s Performance Manager in the SANFL, four years as an assistant coach at Dalyston and currently holds the role of Head of Alumni at the AFLPA.

“ Looking after the forward line is an exciting prospect, especially when it’s spearheaded by the likes of Darcy Vescio and Tayla Harris. Having played here, I have always loved the Club, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work under former teammate Daniel Harford and alongside Steve Salopek – who I played a small amount of footy with as a junior. The development of the girls and seeing the way they compete at training is something that has really inspired me, and I can’t wait to see them go up again against quality opposition.” @Real_BigFish

ADAM DANCEY SKILL ACQUISITION AND DEVELOPMENT COACH

Holding the role of WA State Academy Head Coach – Female Programs, coupled with his time spent as senior assistant with the WA State under-18 Women’s, Dancey has more than 18 years of experience in high performance programs and coaching, and will look to aid the development of the group.

“ I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work at Carlton with such great people – and to also be Bound By Blue. The willingness of the players to take feedback has been exemplary, and we’ve seen progressive improvement throughout pre-season. I can’t wait to see how far the players can push themselves during the competition.”

LEADERSHIP GROUP 30 Leadership group

P In 2019 Carlton’s AFLW team unveiled a six-player leadership group voted on by players. Bri Davey was appointed as captain for the second consecutive year, while joint 2018 best and fairest winner and Blue Bloods recipient Katie Loynes was named as vice-captain. Sharp midfielder Shae Audley, goalkicking weapon Darcy Vescio, midfield bull Sarah Hosking and elite sportswoman Kerryn Harrington rounded out the group. Davey’s re-appointment came as no surprise to Bluebaggers, despite the 2017 All Australian defender being sidelined for most of the 2018 season with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

In the Blues’ 2018 season opener against Collingwood, the skipper was best on ground with four marks and 16 disposals, backing up her performance the following week with 16 disposals and six tackles. The 177cm defender played an important off-field role across the remainder of the season, according to 2018 vice-captain Sarah Hosking. “ Bri’s year last year was unfortunate with her injury but off-field she had such a huge influence on the group leadership-wise and just kept

32

everyone as a close-knit group,” Hosking said. “ It’s going to be really exciting for her to come back and get back out on the field again. It will be so exciting to see her and what she can do. She’s got that ability to bring everyone together and she performs on the field and off the field.” Loynes’ selection as vice-captain by her peers was a pleasing result, according to senior coach Daniel Harford.

He said the 32-year-old brought football smarts to the role. “ I’m super excited about Loynes. She has enormous experience in women’s football and football in general,” Harford said. “ She is a great leader of people. She is a teacher by trade so her messaging to teammates is always really well thought out, let her alone her performance as joint best and fairest from last season.

“ I think it was a great appointment by the girls to get her so high up in the leadership group and appoint her vice-captain. She’ll be great and great support for Bri.” Vescio, who was the AFLW’s leading goalkicker in 2017, Hosking, Audley and Harrington added a diversity of attributes to the leadership group, according to Harford. “ Shae is one of the great characters in football. She’s got a really good balance of serious and light. She demands the best of her teammates,” he said. “ Kerryn Harrington has a highperformance background through her basketball and her standards at training will get us going in the right direction. “ Sarah Hosking was vice-captain last year; keeping her in the leadership group is really important. Her ability to lead the group and set the standard is growing every week. “ Darcy Vescio is clearly one of the stand-out players in the competition. She brings great calm, poise and composure to the group. Her ability to think through the scenarios at training is a stand-out.”

McKay made history at the 2018 NAB AFL Women’s Draft when she became the first fatherdaughter recruit in AFLW history. The daughter of premiership player Andrew McKay, McKay will don the No.5 made famous by her father. It will no doubt be a memorable moment when she runs out for the first time. “ While this is a wonderful story and a proud moment for the Club, we selected Abbie because we see a smart footballer who will greatly contribute to our women’s program.”

Our AFLW team was pushed to its limits in December, as the players headed to the coastal town of Queenscliff for their first pre-season training camp.

The two-day camp provided the perfect opportunity for the playing group to work on their skills, improve their fitness and bond with new teammates and coaches. Taking part in tough beach sessions and intense match simulation, GM of Women’s Football Nicole Graves said the camp had a number of layered benefits.

“ It was really important that we got in as much as possible in that amount of time. They got to spend those 72 hours together which they haven’t had before – we haven’t had a pre-season camp at Carlton,” Graves said. “ For us, it was great to see how they’ve evolved not only as players, but also how the style of play has
