/ This book was created to demonstrate the

work that I produced during my time at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. SOLUTION

/ During the three and a half years that I spent

earning my masters , I have grown both as a designer and as a person. I learne d about persistence, determination, and how to motivate myself to st ay awake those few ex tra hours in order to accomplish my goal s. I decided to attend the Ac ademy bec ause of a packaging design job that I had fallen into in S an D ie go. I did not know what I wa s doing but fell in love with 10

graphic design. I moved to San Francisco in Januar y of 2012 in order to have a fresh star t. I was single, young,

/

and ready for a new adventure in learning. A s I come

11

to the end of the experience and ref le ct on my time as a student, I can look back with a sense of pride and accomplishment. I am a new woman. I was successful not only in this program but al so in my personal life. I have moved back to San Diego, gotten married (during week 10 of my f inal semester), and still managed to f ly to San Francisco ever y week to complete this program. Knowing that I can handle all the stress and craziness that has been the past three years is inspiring. I leave this educational experience for a new one in the f ield t h at I k n ow I wa s m e a nt to p u r s u e. I a m excite d fo r what the future holds. CRE ATE

/ This book is both a ref lection of myself and a

representation of a lot of hard work. I was dedicated, motivated, and accomplished more than I could have ever imagined. I hope that you enjoy this book as much as I have enjoyed creating it.

AN INVESTMENT IN KNOWLEDGE PAYS THE BEST INTEREST. / Benjamin Franklin

SELECTED WO RK

/ Carly Cruickshank

OBJECTIVE

/ Create a book that would accompany a confer-

ence of your choosing based on typography and design. The book should be heavy in information and body copy. All body copy should be researched and written by you. SOLUTI ON

/ For this project, I had a few different ideas that

varied from a conference on a cruise bridging the age gap between senior citizens and children and the influence it would have on design to revamping how retail purchases are made and the way design can help. The final idea brought about some intrigue on currency and the design of paper money. This led to a book that takes a closer look at the 12

currency used in three different countries, the United States, Europe, and China. Paper money is intricate, detailed, and

/

well designed in order to protect against counterfeiting.

13

C R E ATE

/ The process of designing this book began with

sketches and computer roughs of potential layouts. These were all done in black and white to begin with then I started creating spreads in color. I created moodboards at the beginning and then re-created them once the final concept was conceived. From these, I was able to further my idea and create this book. I designed it in landscape format because currency has a landscape orientation. As chapter openers, I created designs that are similar to those on currency using fine lines and shapes. I also used some of these throughout the book to reinforce the concept. The book takes a deep look at the history, symbolism, design, typography, and printing process of the United State Dollar, the European Euro, and the Chinese Yuan.

/ Redesign a corporate sustainability report

or annual report for a publicly traded company of your choosing. Research the company and obtain their most recent CSR or annual report. SO LUTI O N

/ The company I chose was Target. Their annual

report was not available, however, their corporate sustainability report was available to download on their website. I spent some time getting to know the company and the report before deciding on a design aesthetic. C R E ATE

/ Based on the brand, I created a book with bold

red type, using Helvetica, the corporate typeface. I also

26

used black and white photos so the red would really pop in

/

contrast with them. For the charts and graphs, I was inspired

27

by the Target logo and created circular graphs that I felt supported the brand. I used dotted lines rather than solid ones for section dividers. The company had ads out at the time of the logo enlarged and models walking along the edges. This inspired my cover. I blew the logo up to cover the front, side, and some of the back, making it immediately recognizable but also intriguing to the viewer.

/ Create an app that could be used in everyday

life. It cannot be a parking app or anything for food delivery. The app should contain at least 10 screens. SOLUTION

/ As someone who travels often, I know how frus-

trating it is when a flight is canceled and it is too late to book on another airline. The problem is even worse if you are already at the airport. Having to run to different terminals or find out where the next flight is can be a real challenge. This app would help to book last minute flights for travelers already at the airport. CRE ATE

/ I took this idea of booking last minute flights and

38

created an app called, Standby. The app would allow trav-

/

elers to login and with GPS see their current flight as well

39

as other flights leaving around the same time to a similar location. If weather or airline trouble is not allowing the user to get to their location, this app will help get them there. I created a wire-frame to map out how each screen would function. Then I chose a color scheme that felt appropriate by using colors found in the sky. I chose to use Univers because of the legibility of each letter.

WITHOUT COURAGE, WISDOM BEARS NO FRUIT. / Baltasar Gracian

SELECTED WO RK

O B J EC T I V E

/ Find a handwritten sign in that has a call to

action statement somewhere public. From this sign, create a system around it that would assist the public with that call to action. This has to include a catalog book, but the other elements are based on the needs of the sign. SO LUTI O N

/ The sign that I found was located a few blocks

from where I lived at the time. On the front porch of the house were several baskets of fruit. The sign read, “We do the honor system here. I grow it, put it on the stup — you buy it then put your money through the mail slot. #135 on bottom of the door.” I took this sign and named the mock brand, 135 48

Parnassus, the address. I created a catalog book that would help customers learn about the fruit and how much it cost.

/

I also created an app that would allow users to purchase

49

the fruit without having to slip money through the mail slot. CRE ATE

/ The first thing I did while working on this project

was to create a moodboard. I wanted it to feel fresh and natural, I found pictures that had a rustic natural feeling to accomplish this. I then hung the moodboard on my wall so I could see it while working on the elements. I used a soft green as the main color and assigned color based on the fruit to help the user easily identify what they are purchasing. I used Sabon and Snell Roundhand as the typefaces to help give it a sophisticated feel. I found photography that focused on the fruit. I also used thin rules in order to keep the information organized and separated.

ONE PERSON’S CRA ZINESS IS ANOTHER PERSON’S REALIT Y. / Tim Burton

SELECTED WO RK

/ Carly Cruickshank

OBJECTIVE

/ Create a journal based on personal experiences

or moments in your everyday life. The journal can be based on your perception or that of others. The book should have chapters and be a minimum of 45 pages. S O LU T I O N

/ I had a dream that I was in a hotel room and

there were other people there and lots of people coming in and out of the room. I was talking but no one was listening, then I tried to move but could not. Once the room cleared I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror only to find out I was a mannequin. This reminded me of an episode of The Twilight Zone about a mannequin and inspired this journal. CRE ATE

58

/ From the dream, this book was developed. The first

/

chapter was based on that concept. I found a song by Stone

59

Sour called Through Glass about a similar experience and included the lyrics in the book. The remainder is based on what the mannequin is experiencing, thinking, and feeling. The following chapter is about a sinking ship in the middle of the ocean. For the song lyrics that accompany this sinking ship, I used Mat Kearney’s Ships In The Night. In the final chapter, I showed the perspective of a single bullet. This was a more difficult decision than the other two but worth the struggle. Because bullets are rendered useless without a gun, it proposed an interesting point of view.

/ Create a poster based on song lyrics from a

song of your choice. Type the lyrics out on acetate and bring in found materials to photograph on a projector. With the three best images, create a poster. SOLUTI ON

/ The song that I chose was a Lana Del Rey song

called Young and Beautiful. After taking hundreds of photos, the top three were selected that had red, pink, and yellow tones and complimented each other well. C R E AT E

/ After deciding on the song, I began to gather

materials. I printed some of my favorite paintings on acetate and saved some for computer projections. Then, I created

72

an alphabet for the song lyrics and printed them on acetate.

/

I also created ink paintings on acetate that were vibrant

73

and would project well. With the help of other classmates, I used colored paper, crystals, typography, and a scarf, to photograph all the images. With these pictures, I ran color corrections and matched the images. I used Futura as the typeface for the smaller lyrics and the one I created for the larger letters.

/ Choose a film director and create a festival

based on his or her body of work. The final deliverables will include: a catalog book, DVD packaging which includes DVDs, booklets, and a container, a soundtrack, a poster, tickets, a schedule, three products, a website, three advertisements, stationery, and a container. S O LU T I O N

/ The director I chose was Cameron Crowe. I

selected him for a number of reasons, I felt a strong connection to him. We are both from San Diego, we share a love for music and travel, and our favorite time of day is the golden hour just before sunset. His movies all share a common 84

thread of a young man finding himself on a journey inspired

/

by music, love, and self-reflection. C R E AT E

85

/ One of the first things I did was select the six

movies that I would be focusing on during this project. Those included: Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Singles, Say Anything, Almost Famous, Elizabethtown, and Vanilla Sky. From the beginning, I knew I wanted to use men’s handwriting in the project. I kept picturing William Miller, the lead character in Almost Famous scribbling in a notebook. I also knew that the project would never be authentic without a typewriter. After acquiring one from a flea market and downloading a horrible quick hand typeface, I was able to get into it. I printed the type out and wrote over it on tracing paper, then scanned that in and adjusted it in Illustrator. This gave me a graphic element that I could work with across all the deliverables. I then assigned colors to each movie that would help identify the movie quickly. Once a system was in place, I was able to create all the necessary deliverables.

/ Select a dead, dying, or defunct company to

re-brand in a new sector which pertains to the brand’s soul but is not necessarily where the company currently lives. S O LU TI O N

/ In the beginning, I struggled with choosing a

company. After all, the company can make or break this project. I toyed with the idea of Lisa Frank or Sea World, doing something with the protection and safety of animals but it did not feel like the right fit. Then, one night I was watching an episode of Criminal Minds where two guys win a storage unit in an auction. Inside the unit are notebooks of deranged writing, women’s clothing, and other artifacts 108

that implicated the owner. And it hit me, storage units hide people’s secrets. They keep things hidden that other people

/

may not want the world to know exist. This led to my deci-

109

sion to re-brand Public Storage. CR E ATE

/ Once I had the idea, the rest of the process was

exciting. I created a logo which stemmed from brackets, created the letter, “P”, and led to the creation of a secret code. I used this code throughout the book, mainly on chapter openers. I chose Blender and Vitesse as the typefaces because of their structured and digital appearance. I chose dark colors that felt similar to that of a spy company. For the products and services that Public Storage would offer, I separated them down into segments based on protection, defense, and security. These things included everything from body guards and sniper training to bunkers and retina scanners. Providing security and protection for the things that matter most.

/ Decide on and develop a thesis that solves a

problem. The project should take approximately two years from the inception to the final product. S O LU T I O N

/ My undergraduate degree was in Business

Administration, following that degree, I attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising where I majored in Product Development. After working in the fashion industry for a year, I decided to start my own accessories business. Needless to say, I love fashion and have a passion for it. Taking those things into account when deciding on my thesis, I picked a topic that related to a similar but new field 122

in the fashion industry, menswear. I thought about how men shop and what would make the whole process easier. The

/

project started out as a way to help men dress appropriately

123

for business settings and developed into so much more. C R E AT E

/ I knew that I wanted to create an app because

based on the research, men are more apt to make purchases on apps than on websites. I wanted to make it accessible for men everywhere, which led me to add the option of GPS location. This gave me the idea of business travelers, they would need to know what to wear and pack based on where they are and their calendar. The name that I gave this app is Where//Drobe, a play on location and wardrobe. I researched fashion logos and wanted to keep the same design aesthetic creating a monogram logo mark. I wanted to give the app color rather than keep it black and white, like so many apps out there. Color would help to differentiate Where// Drobe. I created color palettes based on the season and implemented those mainly in the calendar section for reference. Throughout the process the app evolved and it became clear that I needed to add a packing list that would show him what to wear based on where he was going. It was also necessary to add shopping as an avenue to generate revenue.

T H A N K YO U

/ Mom and Dad, for your constant love and

support, without which, I don’t think I could have finished this program. Thank you to Tim, who made life better for me while going through everything that the last few years entailed. To my support system at the Academy, Leigh, Priti, Natasha, and Sarah — our late night study sessions with wine and Red Vines were truly a blessing. Thanks to everyone who listened to me, taught me, and encouraged me. Thank you, Southwest for Rapid Reward miles, I would not have been able to have the in-class experience that I so value without them. Finally, thanks to Allie for getting me out of the house everyday and for being the best little companion in the world.
