abigwelcom Welcome to the first edition of our new look magazine carmel twentyfour7. Why this strange title, you may ask? Simple – a reminder that Jesus is Lord twenty four hours a day, seven days a week... The front cover reflects Pastor Gerri’s teaching “Finding Your Way Back”, in which he directs us from the Word of God to get back on track. The focus on teaching here at Carmel Christian Centre, where we also run a Bible School, is very strong and we include an interview with the Director of Anchor Bible Training Centre. I trust you enjoy reading the articles and personal testimonies and benefit from the teaching. For comments and suggestions for the next twentyfour7 please email us on carmel@blueyonder.co.uk
On a personal level, we especially look forward to the birth of our first grandchild. As a church, we have many events planned for this year and hope that those of you who are able will join us , expecting the Holy Spirit to empower and change lives. God bless you abundantly.

the music They are a multi-racial team of missionaries from 7 different nations, speaking 9 different languages, able to sing in 21! Their songs are sung in over 75 countries, in churches, on albums, video and TV. Their vision and purpose is to exhort listeners to discover God’s destiny in their lives. Their desire is to see God’s love extended to the hurting, to facilitate spiritual, emotional and physical healing. Their vision is to see unity within the worldwide church and the salvation of the lost. Their aim is to equip those under their ministry, and to encourage holiness and integrity in people’s personal lives, ministries and churches, paving the way for revival. We listened to “How Majestic Are You Lord”, inspired by the awesome sight of space through a telescope and illustrating God’s eternity and amazing creative powers. Then, “As Time Goes By” – given by God to tell people there is a heaven. – 2 weeks before the twin towers tragedy...

the message Founder member Pastor John Watson’s message was also applicable to the wider church. Though we live in perilous and uncertain times, we should be excited – as the time is coming that every knee will bow to Jesus. John talked about the importance of welcoming lonely people into fellowship, of integrating different nationalities and races into the church, of love in action through practical hospitality and not just “lip service”. Referring to Lot and the sin he committed with his daughters, Pastor John spoke against “spiritual incest” in the church; a healthy church, he said, is a wide mixture of people from different backgrounds, different countries – a reflection of heaven! He read Isiah 61:1-12 “Aliens will shepherd your flocks and work in your vineyards.” He said we can see this is happening in England – the fruit of what England has sown in sending missionaries to other countries in the past has returned! This, and other signs – wars and rumours of wars – point to evidence that this is the time of preparation for Jesus’ return… He said we should be “grafted in” to the church God calls us to, in order to bear fruit and move in our gifting in these troubled times. Revival will come as trouble increases in a world lost, hurting and confused. We are the workers, called and equipped – in a time different from any other that’s gone before – to go out into the fields (John 4:35). As revival comes, we will be needed to look after the little sheep, to love the lost, sick, broken-hearted back to wholeness without judging, to bring them into relationship with their Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Many sincere, honest Christians have lost their way, having almost backslid in their walk with God. They are doing the right things, but they’ve lost their joy, their peace, their ability to trust in God and their Christian life is no longer the experience it should be, no longer empowered. Like the prodigal son, we can all take wrong turnings which will have devastating consequences – until we return to the point of that first wrong decision, adjust our direction and find our way back. The seven churches in Revelation had lost their way and Jesus was directing them back. (Rev 1:18-20) First, Jesus established the fourfold authority by which He speaks: • He is Eternal God – “I am the first and last” • He is the victorious saviour – “I am alive for evermore” • He is the ruling principality – “I have the keys of Hades and death” • He is the ordaining authority – revealed through his messengers (the seven lampstands), to the churches (the seven stars) Jesus then illustrates in referring to things already seen and things still to come that He is the Lord of the past, present and future, that He is unchanging. The number seven is symbolic of perfection, completeness. We see this in the seven functions of the Holy Spirit, and in prophecy. Here in Revelation, Jesus is speaking prophetically to all the churches throughout the ages until His return for His bride the church. Seven is also the expression of the highest power, the greatest conceivable fullness of force. (Rev 1:20) Jesus was addressing seven churches historically but seven situations that affect all churches throughout time until His return. He wants us to be aware of them in order to avoid being ensnared by the devil and circumstances because He does not want us to wander away from His divine plans and purposes for our lives.

Jesus reveals to John in Revelation that the church had lost its way and needed to get back God’s instruction to fulfill what God had said for them to do and to be. Interestingly, the church in Ephesus is seen to be without problems (Rev 2:1-7) It is the only church in the New Testament that Paul in his letters did not need to correct. They were fulfilling all the requirements of a local body so it is noteworthy to see that later the church had strayed and needed correction. It is also seen to be doing all the right things and had many good points – their works, labour and patience testified for them, identifying them as successful; they opposed all those who did evil; they purified their ranks of false apostles, prophets, teachers, and found them liars; they did not become weary but were always seen as leading the way in the cause of Christ. In Rev 2:4 change is evident as we read “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have lost your first love”. What had gone wrong – how had they strayed? They appeared righteous, labouring for Jesus’ name’s sake. Yet they were seen to have lifted up their own importance. This is not easily identifiable, because often activity can cloud the problem of an arrogant heart. It’s when we want others to see our good deeds and how much we are doing, see our “programmes”… They had also become harsh in their criticism of the world, speaking out in condemnation and judgement. They were ruthless in their manner of
dealing with those in opposition or those who had gone astray. Their works were impeccable, but their spirit was sadly lacking. They had moved from the Spirit into a place of works. No longer was God sought for direction, but rather invited to bless what they were doing. They had become arrogant and their dependence was more on their gifting and abilities than their relationship with God. The church had strayed from its first love. In 1 Thes 1:3 Paul commends the Thessalonian church for their “work of faith, labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ…” Compare these words with those of Jesus in Rev 2:2 concerning the Ephesian church – “I know your works, your labour, your patience”. The words “faith”, “love” and “hope” are absent. It becomes evident to us that their works were no longer done in faith, though it is faith that pleases God (Heb 6:11) and Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith (Heb 12:2). Their labour had become a duty instead of a labour of love – the law, not God’s love, being the motivating force. (2Cor5:12-16) Their patience was motivated by self interest instead of the hope of Christ’s return. (2Thes 2:1-4). They had become elevated by their own importance, and though they were enduring, it was for selfish, not righteous, reasons. (Gal 6:1-10) Remember we are exhorted not to grow weary while doing good, for we will never grow weary while motivated by self interest…In the light of these scriptures, there are important questions to ask ourselves...

teaching How much of my living is done in faith? How often do I consult God before I make any decisions? When was the last time I heard God’s instructions for my life, and followed them? How much of what I’m doing now could I continue doing without God’s help? If God never spoke to me again, how would I feel? Am I confident that at this moment in time my destiny is firmly in God’s hands? Faith produces dependence on God (James 4:13-17)
Jesus gives a twofold instruction - “Repent and do the first works”. We understand this better when we read Heb 6:1: “…therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God…” The “ elementary principles of Christ”, the foundational, the first instruction, the beginning of everything, the starting point, is eternal life. Then, when we look at “Repentance from dead works”, we understand that “dead works” is any kind of work that is based on self effort, aimed at gaining merit with God and others, or self-invented work that could be used in an attempt to barter our way into eternity. (Gen3:3,Heb 11:4, Matt 7:21-23) Cain tried to use what God had cursed – the earth that produced his sacrifice represented self-effort in his worship. Ephesus had dead works that they needed to repent of – works without faith, labour without love, patience without hope. “Out” means “moving away from a place, especially from one that is enclosed and safe”. If the Ephesian church was without faith, love and hope, it literally means they had moved from a place of God’s protection into a place of danger.
How much of my doing is done in love? Do I feel compelled to do good out of duty or love? Would I still do it if it were not required of me? Am I motivated by the fear of bad happening if I don’t do good? Do I forgive because Jesus tells me, or because I want to walk in love with my brother? Do I want recognition for the things I do? God’s love inspires selfless works. (Matt 6:1-4) How much of my patience is fuelled by self interest instead of hope in Christ’s return? Is my patience and endurance fuelled by ambition and a desire to indulge in prosperity or is it fuelled by Godly vision? Am I discontent in my circumstances, feeling I deserve better? How much of what I am doing is motivated by the promise of eternal rewards? If Jesus returned tomorrow, would I give a sigh of relief, or be disappointed that I could have done more? Hope endures, awaiting Christ’s return (James 5:5-9) To bring the church back on track, Jesus calls the Church back to the beginning, to repent and do the first works (Rev 2:5) This verse exhorts us to remember from where we have fallen. We need therefore to realise where we took that wrong turn from depending on the Holy Spirit to depending on ourselves. Often the deception that displaces us is very subtle – whether it takes the form of self interest, ambition or offence, we need to identify it and realise it can have eternal consequences. Like the prodigal son, we need to come to our senses and repent, and we then will eat from the tree of life. (Luke 15:17)

Jesus then shows us the importance of faith towards God in the matter of repentance. Repentance without faith is a dead work. We must turn from self to God, from dependence on our own abilities to God’s abilities; we must turn from our desires and allow God’s desires to be birthed in us. We must turn our focus from ourselves to Jesus, from the sin of rebellion and disobedience to faith and trust in God. In James 4:6 it says “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Proud people see no need for God in their lives or in what they are doing. This is exactly what happened to the church in Ephesus – they no longer saw a need for God in what they were doing. They had lost their first love and had moved away from God’s direction, plans and purposes. Jesus is the perfect example of staying on course. He willed to do the will of God; He walked in the will of God, and He worked the will of God through Him. “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, who went about doing good and healing all who were sick and oppressed of the devil for God was with Him.”(Act10:38) He worked in faith, laboured in love and patiently hoped (had confident expectation) in His victory over death and the grave. Not only did Jesus operate in power, but He in turn empowered His disciples, before He released them. (Luke 9:2) It is still His plan and purpose today – to empower people to destiny. Where is your faith, your hope, your love today? Have you allowed yourself to be distracted, to wander from God’s path for you? Then begin to turn around, confront those issues that have distracted you, put them in the right perspective, walk in obedience and instruction, and fulfill the plans and purposes God has for your life. God loves you, and wants to bring to your life everything that Jesus died on the cross for. You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. Find your way back – and stay on track.

schoolforthought Tell me a little bit about your family…
Why did you choose Bristol?
Well, I’ve been married for 3 years and I have a son, Caleb Joel who is one year old.
God had already called Andy to Bristol after he’d been in South Africa, so he knew he was meant to be here. I needed to be in a church of like-minded people and like-minded teaching and we knew this was where God wanted us to be.
Tell me about your husband… My gorgeous husband is an assistant worship leader for Carmel Christian Centre. He is not what I would have expected because if I had written you a list of the kind of man I wanted to marry, Andy would not have fulfiled it in any way. In fact, he is the total opposite to everything that I thought was right for me but God had other ideas. He knows me better than I know myself and Andy is truly my soul mate.
Where did you meet him? I met him on my first day during registration at Rhema Bible Training Centre (RBTC) in South Africa, affectionately known as Rhema Bridal Training Centre. At first I disliked him because he was a “slick city boy” and I’m a “country bumpkin”. But we developed a really good friendship for two years and towards the end of my second year in South Africa, Andy and I began dating. He proposed to me in January 2000 and we married in August that year.

How long have you been involved in the ministry? I was born-again and Spirit-filled when I was 17 but gave my life to the Lord when I was 7. I had a period of rebellion during my teenage years but when I got saved I started serving in my Dad’s church doing anything and everything. At 20 years of age I had the opportunity to move to America to work full-time for a ministry called ASSIST (Aid to Special Saints in Strategic Times) led by Dan Wooding. I lived in Pasadena, just outside Hollywood and travelled throughout America during that year – even as far as the West Indies – preaching and teaching the Word of God. The basis of ASSIST was linking churches in the West with churches behind the Iron Curtain to spiritually support them. When I came back to England I continued to work alongside ASSIST visiting Romania and linking churches there with churches here.
What do you believe is your calling? My immediate calling is to Anchor Bible Training Centre. I’ve always been involved in teaching and was actually going to qualify as a primary school teacher but from the moment I sat in my first lecture at RBTC I knew I wanted to teach the Word of God in that format. As soon as I came back to England Pastor Gerri and Michelle asked me to administrate ABTC and I began lecturing within a couple of weeks. I knew the position God was going to give me and after having my baby, when everything seemed to be going on hold in terms of my calling, God opened the doors for me to come in as Director of Student Faculty… and this is just the beginning.

What do you believe God has in store for ABTC?

I believe this is early days because I envisage a minimum of 1000 students with an onsite campus. At the moment we’re having more of an international impact but I would love to see more English people attending ABTC. We’re looking at starting up two bible schools internationally because it’s difficult for some people to come here and study. We are also looking to introduce a third year, which will involve more hands-on training, aimed at people who want to get involved in ministry and tailor themselves for the call of God on their lives. Why do you feel it is important for people to come to Bible School? Well, I’ve been in the Word since I was 17 and it wasn’t until I went to Bible School that I realised how little I knew. While you’re in Bible School it’s not just about sitting in a classroom learning the word 5 days a week – it’s a training centre. It’s training in relationships because that’s what life’s about. And a lot of what Bible School is actually about is unlearning what you’ve learnt. Many people come into Bible School with a set theology and the Holy Spirit completely blows that apart. It’s such an anointed place. You’re cocooned for a year or two to receive the Word, which gives you an opportunity to deal with your offences, your differences and learn who you are in Christ, because until you know that you’re going nowhere. And now that we’ve introduced evening school we’re making it more available for people who work during the day. If you’re serious about God, He’ll be serious about you. You’ll get out of Bible School what you put into it; it’s up to you. It’s a vital time of equipping, especially if you want to go into the ministry – although it’s not only for people who want to be in “the ministry” as 90 % of our students won’t end up in full-time ministry. They’ve come purely because God wants to teach them something – probably about the fact that He loves them… and once you know that, you can do anything!

With several church plants already established and currently pastoring a church in East London S.Africa, Pastor Tim Salmon has much wisdom to impart to us through his valued teaching. He has also visited many other churches and was taken by surprise at the unexpected success of a church in a disused suburban cinema in Johannesberg. The minister in the natural seemed an ordinary middle-aged man; the building only held 100, yet they were holding 4 multiple meetings – to cater for groups of young people. When he asked God the secrets of its success, God revealed three dynamics in operation – warring, worshipping and working.
tim salmon The day we were each born again, he says, we were thrust into a battle that the Lord requires you to finish. We have an enemy who is very wise, astute, and has four basic strategies that he will use against you. Pastor Tim introduces us to three of them, then to a new strategy the Lord revealed to him.

Direct attack – on the body, on the family. We only have to look at Job to see examples…His possessions, his children, his physical body and finally his marriage was attacked.

Accusation of the brethren (Rev 12:10) – Tim recently heard a rumour that he had divorced his precious wife Sally…. another, that she had died… The enemy loves to lie.
– The enemy subverts, infiltrates 3 theAttackchurch,againstoftentheviachurch “grumpy Christians” who are never happy with their leaders, won’t submit, expect perfection.
4 The withholding spirit... Acts Chapters 1-5 has much to teach us. In Acts 1, the Holy Spirit comes. In Acts 2, the disciples start to preach in power and repentance brings the born-again experience. There are radical conversions – not mental assent - and 3000 are saved. In Acts 3, we see supernatural, miraculous healings through Peter and John. Then the religious leaders react against them, throwing them into prison. Undaunted, they later preach again – and a further 5000 are saved.

In Acts 4, “the radical church” is seen. The disciples teach that salvation is only possible through Jesus Christ; great power and grace is evident, and the believers operate in love and unity, with none lacking. We see an amazing financial flow begin as possessions are sold and shared, and needs met. What a contrast to today’s church. Many church leaders see financial lack as the biggest hindrance to church growth, and are paralysed by it. What has gone wrong? In Acts 5, a change creeps in. Ananias and Saphira withhold what they had promised, lying to man and God. The judgement of God seems to come dramatically upon the church – suddenly, an invisible paralysis penetrates this church of abundance. “Withhold” in Greek is “NOSPHIZOMAI”. It’s an oxymoron – a word made up of two words that have opposing meanings. It translates “embezzlement resulting in bankruptcy”. The irony – embezzlement occurs in order to create riches, yet the translation tells us bankruptcy is the result…Ananias and Saphira had embezzled from the Lord, resulting in bankruptcy in the church...This “withholding spirit” has infiltrated the church since then, and is evident in the following areas: The financial realm – We are familiar with the scripture “Will a man rob God?” (Mal 3:8). How many realise though that in withholding tithes and offerings we embezzle from God – resulting in bankruptcy? Relationships – Men often have a withholding attitude towards women, resulting in robbing her of her rightful position as joint heir with him. Withholding love - between husband and wife, parents and children – embezzles love, resulting in emotional bankruptcy in marriages and family relationships. Taking offence – this is often known as Satan’s bait because as soon as it is taken, a withholding spirit automatically steps in, leading to withholding worship, to an inability to receive the word and blessings – or even to come to church… Like a mouse tempted by the cheese, they are then caught in a trap… Don’t allow deceit to trap you any longer – in finances, relationships, church life…If you recognise a “withholding spirit” in any area repent, ask God for forgiveness – and move on in all that God intends.

testimonies We visited Carmel, and each time Pastor Gerri taught I had a deep sense I was hearing something prophetic. This was like finding the missing ingredient in a whole lifetime of experience. Hope welled up in my heart again.
Throughout our 35 years of marriage, Susan and I determined Jesus would be pre-eminent. However, we came to a point where we knew we weren’t moving towards God’s destiny for our lives. It became true of me that “hope deferred makes the heart sick” (Prov.13:12). Then, friends my age started talking seriously about retiring….! My life couldn’t decline this way, I protested….
Being fully persuaded it was God’s will that we should be students at ABTC and be part of Carmel, we packed our belongings and moved to Bristol. Here we are being changed and equipped for ministry, knowing we have a future and a hope, and that age is no obstacle. You wait and see what God will do!
clareirwin Now, my focus changed from myself to God, who began to deal with all the issues that had tormented and controlled me for so long.
Two decisions that changed my life were first accepting Jesus as my Saviour, and second, coming to Carmel Christian Centre. I know I was drawn here by God, and the teaching I received based on the word, led me to pray to ask God to change me.
I feel – and look – like a different person! I am now very happily married, and we both attend Carmel church and ABTC evening classes together, learning and growing in the Word of God and being knitted into His family.
I recognised that I had previously been useless to God. I was anxious, self-conscious and insecure. I was always late, and hid behind make-up and an eating disorder.
Don’t take lightly being here in the body of Christ – God will teach and change us all, if we let Him.

syllviawatt I was studying at University in London for my degree. Away from home and family, I was preparing for exams, under extreme pressure to learn and retain masses of information. The pressure was increased by staff shortage, and the task before me seemed impossible. I had been brought up by Christian parents, and I knew the moment had come to seek God for myself, no longer relying on their faith.
I asked God what to study, and He revealed five particular areas. In faith, I revised those and only those, discarding all the rest! On the day of the exam, the five questions - out of twenty five possibilities - were exactly what God had told me! Living in the Word
Future subjects to be covered will include
A life changing experience “Living in the Word” is an Anchor Bible Training Centre initiative and is sponsored by Carmel Christian Centre. The purpose: to minister the Word of God to people who desire to further their knowledge of and come to a deeper relationship with God as Father, Jesus as Saviour and the Holy Spirit as Helper. Each “Living in the Word” course is presented over an eight week period with two subjects taught per course. These are presented in a double-lecture format on Tuesday nights. Subjects currently in rotation are ‘Christ in the Tabernacle’ and ‘Freedom from Sin.’ This course will equip you with the knowledge to make a difference in your own life and enable you to speak life into those around you.
