reflections onprayer the simplicity of prayer revealed!
abigwelcom We had our first Christmas in our new building, though it seems ages ago and we’re now looking forward to the summer sunshine! After working so hard to get everything ready for our official opening, it was wonderful to be able to relax in comfortable surroundings to celebrate and have fellowship with one another here at Carmel. A very happy 2004 to all our readers. I feel really excited about what God is enabling us to do as a body. We’re running courses to equip and set people free to receive all that God intends – like Positioned for Blessing, The Anointed Marriage and Promise Of Purity – you’ll see more about them in this issue. We’ve also started an after school club as we continue to reach into the local community. Enjoy reading the articles, testimonies and teachings. We were especially blessed that Dr Tayo Adeyemi and Pastor Bernie McLaughlin joined us for our annual convention. Finally – if you haven’t already visited us, please do!

discovered that our honoured guest speake with our vision for the city! The Right Honourable, The Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Bill Martin and his wife The Lady Mayoress Mrs Sue Martin, officially opened and dedicated our new building to the service of God. The role of the church in society today The church of Jesus Christ is the only club ever formed for the benefit of its non members. It is here for those millions of people outside these four walls who have not heard of the saving power of Christ. When we first arrived to meet Gerri and the team and he said “We are a charismatic Pentecostal church” I could see he was waiting for me to say “What’s that?” But from the age of five I went to Elim Pentecostal church in Bermondsey in London. I know what it is to get happy in worship. These days I’m a little more sedate than I used to be – my chain weighs me down! – but I still love worship with like-minded people, especially when you have a good preacher. The church’s role is to serve God, to serve others and especially those rejected by society. We must love the unlovable, cherish those who are homeless – the bible calls them widows and orphans. It is significant that when the man was beset by bandits, the Levite and the scribe passed him by but he was helped by a Samaritan – untouchable to the Jews, who ignored them as if they did not exist. God had a message there about untouchable people. We are to serve those rejected by society. We are in the world, not to be separate, even if we are not of the world’s ethics and morals. In the community we should emancipate. Two hundred years ago the issue would have been slavery or women – today it’s famine, war, poverty, disease, injustice – that’s the emancipation that God is calling His people to action – locally, nationally and internationally. We do it by becoming community leaders, by providing services – Sunday school crèche, day nursery, lunch club, soup run, sending blankets, responding to a crisis appeal. We do it by witness, by example.
God had a message about untouchable peopl rejected by society. We are in the world, not are not of the world’s ethics and morals. 4

November 03 and we r had much in common
In a permissive society our ethics and morals are important. Somebody has to set a base line standard. We do it by resistance. If the church, the trade unions, if people had resisted Adolf Hitler in 1932 the second world war would not have happened and 25 to 30 million people would not have perished. There is a role for Christian resistance today and we do it by protest. If we do not believe that our politicians, local or national, are doing the right thing, then I believe we have a right to protest, stand up and be counted . We do it by leadership and in participation, we do it in community life, we do it by example. You do not get into heaven by good works, but faith alone is sterile. If you believe God saves yet you do nothing, nothing happens. It is by faith and works that we lead in society today. It is important to be the light of God in a dark world in our own way however big or small. My challenge to Carmel is to go out into the world and preach the gospel. Stand up even though you fall short of God s glory. God has blessed this church here. He has a job for you to do in this city. Your pastors and your church leaders in prayerful reflection will lead you in that task. I thank God you are here. My witness will be different from yours – but I know personally from being small and fair, to being big, fairly round, middle aged and white-haired, that God answers prayers. God will lead this congregation to the task that he has for you.

excelyourselve Mentalities for building a 21st century church.
An abridged version of Dr Tayo Adeyemi’s teachiing at Empowering for
Jesus said “I shall build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” (Matt 16:18) Jesus is the builder of the church and He has called you and me to be co-labourers with Him – we are God’s fellow workers…(1 Cor 3:9 ) We are to be mindful of exactly what we are building. If we want the church to grow we need to grow ourselves. Pastors must not only preach but live their message. “Isaac sowed and reaped in that year a hundred fold and the man grew and was great and went forward.” (Gen 26:12–14) God wants us to build a church that will take us somewhere.
The church in Revelation is a great city, with specific characteristics:
The distance we want to go will determine the kind of vehicle we travel in.
Multi-functional, multi-purpose, rampant, vibrant, prolific, powerful, self-governing, self-sustaining.
In Genesis 6:14 God told Noah to make himself something that would take care of him in the difficult days ahead. Noah built a vehicle that was many times bigger than himself, following God’s pattern, and the ark preserved him and rose high above the earth. Equally, God calls us to build something that is bigger than ourselves and we must build according to God’s exact pattern. The day is coming when the environment will destroy everything that God has not built. The only thing that the gates of hell will not prevail against is the church that Jesus is building. The darkness will grow and our light will shine brighter; we will be the only ones floating above the waters. The house of the Lord will be established on the top of every mountain and every hill and all the nations will flow to it. The ark was very solid but at the same time it was dynamic. Similarly, our church must have structure on the inside, discipline and boundaries, while at the same time be able to move with the world without compromising that inner structure. “Come, I will show you the bride... and He carried me away in the spirit to a high mountain and showed me the Holy City Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God…” (Rev. 21:9) “I heard a voice say to me” Come up hither that I may show you the things after these””. (Rev 4:1) At the top of the mountain you have the eagle’s eye view of what God wants to show you. The blueprint for your church must therefore be obtained in the realm of the spirit.
6
Descended from heaven; a city whose builder and maker is God. (Heb.11:10) Having the glory of God, a radiance. The Bible says that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. When our churches are born of the Spirit there is a glow about them. With twelve gates to allow traffic in and out. There must be a dynamic recruitment system – you must bring people to church and walk with them until they make the church their home. We must also learn to let traffic out; be a missionary church that releases people. Furthermore, pastors must not be afraid to tell people to leave the church. An individual’s presence is not good for the life of the church if they are complaining they are not being blessed and they are not blessing you. The gates open to the four corners of the earth – three to the East, West, North and South. We must be a globally relevant, multi-cultural church where everybody feels at home. Has foundations. Church is not empowered by what happens in the pulpit on a Sunday morning but by the ‘behind the scenes’ dynamics, the prayer that takes place throughout the week. Is a perfect cube, with strengths evenly distributed. Every aspect of the ministry must be equally strong; prayer, worship, women’s ministry, social action, community outreach. Then, if the devil comes against one aspect of the church, it cannot topple over.

ADDRESS
Excellence must therefore be manifested in four areas: In leadership. Excellence is a spirit that must exist in the leadership who must discipline themselves. In the support teams. When the Queen of Sheba came, before she saw Solomon she saw his servants, the food on the table, the way that the table was laid. Newcomers to your church will decide whether or not to come back long before they see the Pastor. In ministry. High quality ministry must be delivered every Sunday and those who preach must come to the pulpit with fear and trembling. In the tangibles. If you can see it, hear it, or touch it you can improve it. Excellence is simply improving on yesterday’s performance. The church would be more relevant if we took the message and packaged it properly. God is raising an awesome church for which He is coming back. What materials are you building with? Take your wood, hay and stubble and throw it away, embracing the gold, the silver and the precious stones of excellence.

Effective prayer is that which is done in a child-like attitude, with child-like faith, to God our Father. (Oswald Chambers)
reflectionsofpray “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)
By Pastor Gerri Di Somma Taken from ‘The Simplicty of Prayer’, part of ‘Reflections on Prayer’ tape series.
Two things which are extensively discussed and spoken about but have produced such poor results are prayer and dieting! The problem is not within prayer and dieting themselves but in getting people to do it. We have made it so complicated and moved away from the simplicity of it all. A man once went to the doctor because he was ill and struggling to lose weight. The doctor wrote him a prescription and told him this would solve all of his problems. The prescription read: ‘Stop eating’! It is similar with prayer; instead of looking for complicated answers to our problems, we simply need to start praying. Oswald Chambers said, “If prayer is not easy, we are wrong; if prayer is an effort, we are out of it; if prayer is complicated, we have missed it somewhere”. Effective prayer is that which is done in a child-like attitude, with child-like faith, to God our Father.

teaching
What Prayer is: Prayer has order, yet is done without formality. Prayer has structure, without it being restrictive. Prayer has expression, better done in secret. Prayer has diversity, without it being divisive.
<<
Prayer has purpose, to produce God’s will in us. In Matthew 26:36-46 we read the account of Jesus’ great anguish in the Garden of Gethsemane. We gain much revelation about prayer from this passage, through studying the actions of Jesus and the disciples. Jesus prayed three prayers, beginning with “If it is possible, let this cup pass from Me” (v39) and ending with “Your will be done” (v44). He prayed until His will became the Father’s will and, in so doing, moved from discussion to submission, from asking to obeying, and ultimately from living to dying. Through prayer Jesus brought His flesh into submission even to death, so that He could be resurrected and we can enjoy life today. Likewise, when we kill the work of the flesh in our lives through prayer, the life of the Spirit will be revived and resurrected in us.
er
We learn various points about prayer through Jesus’ example in this passage:
Three levels of allegiance to prayer 1: Those who sit and do nothing, as the disciples did in v36. 2: Those who begin to do something but do not follow through, as Peter and the two sons of Zebedee in vs 38 & 40. 3: Those who make things happen, as Jesus did through His prayer in v44.
3
Three approaches to prayer 1: Open discussion:
‘Let’s talk about it, Dad’
2: Outright negotiation:
‘Let’s explore all the possibilities’
3: Obedient submission:
‘Okay, this is it’
Three attitudes in prayer 1: The whinger – who grumbles persistently, making excuses not to do things. 2: The whiner – who complains in a petty/feeble way, attempting to do things but not wanting to. 3: The winner – who does things successfully. This is the one who carries out God’s perfect will no matter what it takes, embracing God’s instruction and working hard, expecting breakthrough and achieving it every time.
9
teaching
Three activities in prayer 1: Watch with Me (v38). The first thing we must do to be effective in prayer is to watch, which means here ‘to keep awake, to be vigilant, to make yourself available’. We must get away from activity, as Jesus did, to hear God’s instruction. 2: Watch and pray (v41). Prayer is the interruption of the natural to access the spiritual and is therefore vital to overcome the weakness of the flesh. If we are not accessing the spiritual, the flesh will cause us to fail every time. 3: Watch, pray and persist (v45). We need to resist the work of the flesh and persist in prayer until we have brought our will into the will of God, as Jesus did.
Three aftermaths of prayer
3: Breakthrough every time – In this place of prayer, God reveals His purpose, empowers us to do it and brings the necessary provision.
To summarise, the simplicity of prayer consists of five ingredients: 1:
The allegiance of prayer is to the Father’s will
2: The approach is obedient submission 3: The attitude is that of a winner 4: The activity is to watch, pray and persist
5
<<
1: Nothing – this is a life of crisis and a direct result of trying to negotiate with God.
5: The aftermath is breakthrough every time
2: An erratic life – demonstrated by the ‘hills and valleys’ Christian. This is someone who takes some things to God but tries to handle other things alone.
Ultimately, the difference between a winner and a loser in the spiritual sense is prayer. Those who achieve are those who persist in their prayer life.

Nigel and Rhian Parkinson first met at ABTC. They learned to hear from and trust God – a lesson they would need to draw on as they faced the greatest challenge of their lives... When Pastor Gerri first introduced us, sensing we would be good for each other and knowing that Nigel was looking for a wife, our reaction was mutual disinterest! A previous long-term relationship that I hoped would result in my wedding before I was 30 had ended. Marriage was far from my thoughts, especially to Nigel. Jesus was my new love, and the past became a distant memory as I found happiness in life with the Lord as I was discipled and had fellowship at Carmel. Little did I know what God had in store for me… As I drove behind Nigel on the way to Bible College one morning, he did an emergency stop. I crashed into him and wrote his car off! I reluctantly gave him a lift to Bible College until the summer when he graduated, hardly speaking to him. Unknown to me at the time, God had revealed to Nigel that I would be his wife! He had asked God to change his heart towards me, and God had answered. It was a difficult challenge to win me but Nigel trusted God. As time went on, God softened my heart towards Nigel, convicting me of how unchristianlike I’d been towards him and gradually a friendship developed. We discovered a compatibility as if we’d known each other for years. In August ‘99 we married. I was 29 years old. Nigel and I had our first child Josiah on 18 April 2001, an active boy from the Lord. Our next child Lois was born 8 weeks prematurely on 29 September 2003, weighing only 3lbs 15oz (1.78kg). I had previously nursed on the Newborn Intensive Care Unit so I knew what medical challenges to expect. Nigel immediately phoned Carmel and other Christian family and friends to pray for Lois. I cuddled her briefly before she was taken away to the Intensive Care Unit. When Nigel and I were allowed to see her later she was in an incubator and on oxygen. It was insufficient to give her the help she so urgently and desperately needed to survive, so a continuous positive air pressure set had to be attached to her nose. That night, we had to leave little Lois – I returned to the maternity ward and Nigel went home. We prayed over our baby before we went, still trying to come to terms with her early arrival and all that had happened. During the night Lois deteriorated. The Consultant was called in to oversee her care. She was critically ill and on a ventilator on 100% oxygen.
The Consultant came to speak to me explaining all they were doing, saying at least I had God on my side and still hope. He then took me back again to the neonatal ward to see Lois. The hospital staff were doing all they could medically but Lois’ condition was critical. Nigel was called in and we did what we knew to do – pray. We rebuked the devil and thanked God for Lois’ healing. Lois looked as if she would burst because she was so swollen and ill, but we knew God was on the job, and His peace flooded us. Christian friends visited that day and were overwhelmed by the anointing that surrounded Lois. We continued to be strong and take heart because our hope was in the Lord to heal and to give Lois long life. The very next day improvement in Lois was clearly noticeable – her oxygen requirement was lower and the swelling reduced. Improvement continued until by the end of the week all swelling was gone and she no longer needed any help with her breathing. She went from strength to strength. Four weeks after her birth and still four weeks before she was due to be born, Lois was discharged from hospital perfectly healthy and gaining weight – praise God! We give thanks to all the people, known and unknown – Carmel Church, family, friends, who prayed for Lois and us. To God be the glory! Editor’s note – Lois has recently had her first hospital check and Doctors were delighted with her progress.

John & Pam Knuckey
There was a chasm between us. We had tried so hard to get it right, but had become serious and up tight with each other. My heart had become hardened, and I had withdrawn from church, married life and responsibility. Lyn had become critical, nagging and quite independent. We were practically leading separate lives.
After nearly 40 years we had a "settled" marriage. I was satisfied.
The course made us see we were doing things in our own strength, our own way, not God's. We went to Positioned For Blessing then The Anointed Marriage. These two courses changed everything. God enabled us to deal with issues that had prevented us from moving forward for years. He melted my stony heart and gave me a heart of flesh. He gave us the desire and ability to walk together in agreement, unity and harmony, enabling me to take up my responsibility as head of our home. God restored fun and laughter to our marriage and the desire to do things His way in our lives.

I had always resisted marriage seminars but the Hoy Spirit gave me no peace until I committed to The Anointed Marriage. I was quite blasé, but the Lord revealed to me that ours was not a good marriage and that I was the problem! The next few days were a roller coaster of revelation, repentance, forgiveness and making up. He opened my eyes to the treasure and qualities in Pam I had been blind to all our married life. He renewed our marriage. We love and appreciate each other as never before. By His grace I am becoming the husband that Pam desires and deserves. She enriches my life and I know how much I need her. The Anointed Marriage course was a life-changing experience. We unreservedly recommend it to all married couples. Don't settle for average when God offers the best.

Building Families Changing Nations
We first met Drummond and Lindah last year when they came to carmel: Bristol to introduce "Family Transformation International". This is an anointed ministry, borne out of many years of ministering to individuals, couples and families. It became increasingly evident to both Drummond and Lindah that the same basic issues were occurring again and again. No matter how hard people tried, they were seldom able to break free and stay free from the problems that were causing them such despair. God enabled and equipped Drummond and Lindah to pioneer "Positioned For Blessing" and "The Anointed Marriage" courses which transform peoples' lives wherever they are established. Although Drummond and Lindah ran the first courses themselves, it very quickly became impossible to cope with the workload as more and more were requested. As a result, Drummond and Lindah began to train leaders to run the courses within their own churches, setting up Family Transformation Centres worldwide. Read for yourself personal heart-warming reports of how carmel:familytransformation centre helped change the lives of people who have attended "Positioned For Blessing" and "The Anointed Marriage”...

After thirty-six years of marriage, who needs 'The Anointed Marriage' course? We did! Our hearts had lost some of the tenderness of former years and hardened through habit, familiarity and routine. Words once used to woo each other had become barbed and careless. Often only the mechanisms of marriage had kept us going. The Anointed Marriage course was a 'must' for us. We explored the biblical principles which empower marriage, looked closely at communication, and with it reviewed our understanding of sexual intimacy. The Holy Spirit helped us understand the root issues leading to the difficulties we lived with.

Positioned for Blessing
We can experience freedom & blessing – It’s our birthright. This course will help to clarify and restore your identity & destiny in God, which has so often been robbed through lack of blessing from parents, generational bondages & undesirable life patterns.
We experienced release and restoration. Barriers that separated us were pulled down as the Holy Spirit revitalised us. The playful joy of desire for one another was rekindled. We supped together from the covenant cup, renewed our marriage vows and rededicated ourselves one to the other.
Course Duration in March

cryrestore!
Our valued friend and guest Rev. Bernie McLaughlin of Cornerstone Church, Ayrshire, Scotland speaks prophetically to carmel:church
I sense a liberation in this place – I know it is the power of God. There is a spirit of liberation here; that spirit will go forth from here. We are all part of an army – the liberation army of God. I see you going out there into the streets, liberating the lives of people, liberated because you are doing it. Glory to the living God, every mark the devil has made in your life, you are liberated from that mark in Jesus name! There will be no more scars, no more sighing, no more crying and no more dying. (Rev 21) God has a place prepared, so that you will not struggle to sleep at night, because the peace of God will just flood you, flood your family, flood your household. Thank God for Jesus and all those things will be wiped away by the blood, for you are under the blood.
We need to get back to pleading the blood, you plead the blood over Bristol, plead the blood over your pastors, you plead the blood over this place, you plead the blood over your children, you just plead the blood.
God is looking for people to cry “Restore!” (Isaiah 42:22). We need a cry to go up in this house. It’s got to be a cry of restoration of that which the devil has stolen. Christ came to give us more abundantly. We need people to stand and shout “RESTORE, RESTORE, RESTORE!” The shout has to go out in the land. Joshua had to walk round that place seven times and the shout had to go up. (There has to be a shout in your heart.) It says they shouted and they cried. In Ezra it says they shouted and cried at the same time, a shout and a cry went up.
Your bible says you are a prisoner of hope – something good is about to happen in your life, something great, this is a place where everyone who walks in here will have the same expectation. You will expect miracles, you will expect liberation in this place, you will expect to see those signs and wonders that the bible says are going to happen in the last days. That’s going to happen in this place, it is a sure thing.
I hear a cry coming from this town, it’s a cry of restoration. That which the enemy has taken will be restored. We are prisoners of hope. That’s for you also because of the blood of your covenant. How many of you are under the covenant? I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to the stronghold, that is the stronghold of the blood. It’s not talking about a weak hold.

You are in the stronghold of the blood, you prisoners of hope, amen.
Listen to this, even today I declare that I will restore double to you. I will restore double to you. You’ve got something to be hopeful about, you’ve got something that the foundations of this church are built on – hope. Faith-filled pastors have given their life for a dream and you are a part of that dream. This is a place where dreams will come to pass. You will understand and you will not be lured out like the prodigal son, you have to refuse to leave your stronghold, amen. Don’t let the enemy lure you out of your stronghold but stay strong in the Lord.
“You prisoners of hope, even today I declare that I will restore double to you” (Zechariah 9:12)

gonefishing Read about the experience of John Pearce, carmel:partner and abtc:graduate, when he obeyed Jesus’s command “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19)
John Pearce (middle lying down) with the rest of the Street Ministries International team Jan Erikson’s Street Ministries International in Vienna, Austria promised: “Seven days that will change your life.” In pursuit of life changing opportunities, Carmel partner John Pearce headed off to the land of Mozart, Schwarzeneggar and Wienerschnitzels. A ministry specifically targeted at training Christians to become effective “soulwinners” had more than a certain attraction for me – it became a compulsion... Jan and Barbara Erikson came to Carmel in March 2003, promoting the annual conference of Street Ministries International and shared how God had miraculously lifted Jan from a life of violence and hopelessness on the streets, to restoration and destiny. They spoke about how the conference was an opportunity to hear in depth the testimony of a former pimp and gangster now established in the ministry, and get onto the streets and see God change people’s lives. All I heard in my spirit was “Go”. When I arrived at the hotel and conference centre, I discovered I was the only English person among Norwegians, Germans, Austrians and Swiss! I had a basic understanding of conversational German. However, the majority of the time conversations survived more on others’ capability to speak excellent English than mine to speak sketchy German! The “red-light “ seminars – three sessions each morning – prepared us to meet the dark world of the drug addict, alcoholic, pimp and street prostitute. We heard firsthand from Jan the awful truth of death and control on the streets of America and Europe. This world is often hidden from the casual eye of the general public and it was a shock to encounter its existence and the brutality of its hierarchy.
We heard from Peter Klausreigler, an ex heroine addict who testified how Jesus Christ had set him free from this life-destroying drug. He described how being addicted was like existing in a living tomb with no escape. I especially valued the emphasis on practical ministry, as the best way to establish truth in your heart is to demonstrate it in the world. For several hours each afternoon we walked the streets of Vienna speaking the Word of our testimony and seeing the Holy Spirit move in awesome ways. We also focussed on corporate street outreach in the main square of Vienna – Stephensplatz. The teaching was once again courtesy of Jan as well as his pastor, Fred Lambert of Rhema Bible Church, Wels, Austria. We heard how to set up an outreach, be an effective soul-winner and a living tract and how to present the gospel. I took part in a dance group which opened and closed the street outreach, on Stephensplatz. Whilst this was going on, other members of our group began talking and sharing the gospel with people watching. It was great to work together in unity of purpose – all the glory went to God. We saw many people receive Jesus during these times of outreach – we reaped as we had sown. I then flew to New Mexico in America and was able to demonstrate what I had learnt in Austria amongst street children in Juarez, Mexico and with the Navajo Indians in Window Rock, Arizona. I saw with my own eyes the power of the gospel change many lives. If you are willing, let God challenge YOU to become a fisher of men...
