WELCOME God has spoken clearly to us about 2013 being a year of change and growth and we are expectant for what this year holds. We have already launched two church campuses in the city of Bristol that are linked to the existing site via live streaming. PREPARE YOU READY?

When Pastor Gerri and Michelle Di Somma obeyed God’s call to leave South Africa and establish a Church in Bristol, England, God revealed His vision for the ministry. God named the Church ‘Carmel’, which in Hebrew means ‘garden-land’ and denotes a fruitful place. Carmel City Church has lived up to its name. As Pastor Gerri and Michelle have obeyed God’s leading, Carmel has become a fruitful place, increasing in influence locally, nationally and internationally. VISION UNCOVERED Every year, Carmel revisits and presents their God-given vision to the congregation. This takes place during January on ‘Vision Sunday’. The vision of Carmel is made clear in accordance with God’s Word: “Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. Habakkuk 2:2. Vision Sunday allows Carmel to keep their focus upon God’s vision and direction. In addition, the next phase of the journey is revealed through practical steps that will be taken to fulfil God’s vision for the church. Congregation members are given the opportunity to evaluate and locate their part in the process. MISSION AND VISION Carmel’s mission statement is: He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. Luke 9:2. God revealed His vision for Carmel to fulfil this mission: 1. Cover our City 2. Bless our Neighbours 3. Send to the Nation 4. Touch the World 4

ENLARGE AND EXPAND During 2012, God spoke prophetically to Carmel: “Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, and your descendants will inherit the nations, and make the desolate cities inhabited. Isaiah 54:2-3. This scripture was spoken prophetically four times, confirming God’s purpose for Carmel to increase both naturally and spiritually and to affect spiritual change in the community, city and nation. Carmel believes that 2013 is a significant year of change and growth. PUTTING THE ‘GREAT’ BACK INTO BRITAIN The UK is no longer considered to be a Christian nation; it is now recognised as a secular nation that is experiencing moral decline. The national Church is responsible for the state of society because it has remained silent regarding ungodly legislation and has permitted sinful practices within the Church itself. However, it is the national Church who can lead the UK back to moral integrity through teaching and applying the undefiled and undiluted Word of God. It is God’s Word that re-establishes moral values and brings healing to broken and bruised people.

Carmel is responding to the moral crisis by strategically taking its place to rebuild the nation one life at a time using God’s Word, which is the solution to the problem: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17. DISCOVERY IN 2013 The moral condition of any nation depends on the truth of God’s Word being its standard. That’s why it’s vital to discover the truths contained in the Bible. The Latin word for ‘discover’ signifies that something needs to be uncovered. It implies that a discovery is made of something that already exists but is generally unknown. Carmel’s focus for 2013 is discovering the truths found in God’s Word. These truths are timeless and they exist eternally, but often the truths are forgotten or not taught accurately. This highlights the need to discover God’s Word personally to be empowered to live a successful Christian life. Starting locally with the Christians at Carmel, the aim is to impact individual lives in order for each person to then influence other people’s lives and, in that way, once again permeate the UK

ADY? with the Gospel and godly values. The four key areas that Carmel will address are: Leadership, Life, Legacy and Land. DISCOVER LEADERSHIP: VISION AND PURPOSE Carmel recognises the importance of individuals knowing how to lead their own lives before embarking on the journey to lead others: For if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God? 1 Timothy 3:5. Leadership requires a life of selfdenial. It starts with leading ourselves and translates into effectively leading others. This is accomplished through: • • • • •

Leading self successfully Leading family relationally Leading church purposefully Leading community morally Leading business righteously

DISCOVER LIFE: CONVICTION OF BELIEFS It’s vital for Christians to know exactly what they believe in order that they will not be swayed from their convictions. It is through knowledge and understanding of the Word of God that Christians can gain conviction of their beliefs and live successfully: This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8.

Knowing and obeying God’s Word takes the stress out of life because God guarantees success. This is accomplished through: • • • • •

Living life selflessly Living family generationally Living church educationally Living community socially Living business ethically

DISCOVER LEGACY: INVESTING FOR ETERNITY It is necessary for Christians to leave a legacy of faith for their children and grandchildren in order that they too can influence their society: And what great nation is there that has such statutes and righteous judgements as are in all this law which I set before you this day? Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. And teach them to your children and your grandchildren. Deuteronomy 4:8-9. Christians must be intentional about teaching and training the next generation in God’s truth. This is accomplished through: • • • • •

Establishing a personal script of morality Establishing vision for the family Establishing the church vocationally Establishing community self-sufficiency Establishing business ethically

DISCOVER LAND: COVERING THE CITY As Christians discover leadership, life and legacy through God’s Word and implement the corresponding strategies, their success positions them to influence, bring change and rebuild the nation based upon God’s truth: And they shall rebuild the old ruins, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the ruined cities, the desolations of many generations. Isaiah 61:4. Knowing that success determines influence, Carmel is focusing on discovering God’s truth concerning leadership, life and legacy in order to establish godly influence in the land. The following results will be evident: • • • • •

Independently free financially Family established unitedly Church influencing morally Community healed socially Business expanding influentially

Over 60 men travelled to Hill House Christian Centre for Carmel’s Valiant Men’s Advance from 23rd – 25th November 2012. The men enjoyed times of fellowship, powerful worship and teachings from God’s Word. The scene was set on the Friday evening as the men watched the film, ‘Courageous’. The film depicted the responses of four men who individually faced different obstacles that endangered their family’s wellbeing. Each man, despite his mistakes or circumstances, resolved to confront the challenges and fulfil his responsibilities to God and his family. The courage demonstrated by these men positioned them as leaders in their homes, which positively influenced their family members to follow God. The teachings that followed during the remainder of the Men’s Advance built upon the themes that arose from the film. MEN OF HONOUR Pastor Sean Leask began the teaching on Saturday morning. He explained the importance of honour by relating the story of King David’s life: “David wasn’t a perfect man, but God blessed him because of the honour he displayed”. The men were told how they can follow David’s example and position themselves to receive God’s blessing: “Honour God, first and foremost. Then, obey His commands to honour your parents, families, those in 6

authority and all people. This will bring God’s blessing because He honours those who honour Him”. MEN OF GOD’S LOVE Next, Pastor Michael Fletcher addressed the men concerning God’s love: “Love is not one of God’s attributes; God is love”. Pastor Michael emphasised the need for Christian men to experience God’s love personally in order to demonstrate His love towards others. Practical ways to show love towards family members were given: “Tell your wife that you love her and make sure your actions match your words; discipline your children according to the Bible, but also spend time with them and care about what is happening in their lives”. MEN OF BLESSING The relationship between accountability and blessing was Pastor Gerri Di Somma’s subject on Sunday morning. “Accountability takes a male and makes him a man and a leader who is Christ-like,” he explained. Pastor Gerri highlighted that insecurity hinders men from making themselves accountable and added that “men are insecure because they have not received their parents’ blessing”. The significance of parental blessing was described with reference to the Jewish custom of Bar Mitzvah where a boy passes from childhood into adult life with a blessing from his parents.

“God’s chosen instrument of blessing are parents in the presence of a priest,” said Pastor Gerri. “The blessing is powerful because it releases personal identity, calling and destiny”. The advance culminated in a ‘rite of passage’. Fathers prayed for their sons, blessed them and released them into their destinies. Those whose natural fathers were not present received a blessing from spiritual fathers. MEN OF COURAGE Many lives were impacted and changed by this year’s advance as men courageously answered the call to be valiant men in their homes, place of work and in society. Here are just a couple of testimonies: This advance was a very poignant occasion: I took my son through the rite of passage and released him into his identity, calling and destiny. He has begun to excel in his ministry and in other areas of his life. I dare all fathers to do the same for their sons! Chris Chikwanah The advance focused on each man being a leader in his family and community. I was challenged to stand up for my beliefs and make myself available for God’s ordained mandate for my life. I renewed my commitment to God and experienced His peace, freedom and anointing. YOUTH CONFERENCE 2013

Based on the record-breaking film ‘The Avengers’, this year’s Youth Conference, themed ‘The Assembled’ exemplified church unity. Carmel’s young adults’ department, St Revolution, welcomed young people from UK and overseas churches. These attendees gathered to learn how to live and work successfully with other Christians. In the film, various superheroes were brought together as a team against a common enemy. They needed to work through differences in both personality and power in order to be successful. When they learnt to recognise their own strengths and weaknesses, and those of their teammates, they succeeded. With this in mind, the main scripture for the Conference was 1 Corinthians 12:12-26. The youth were shown how this passage compares the physical body with the Body of Christ: Just like the individual parts of the physical body has different functions, so too do the individual Christians in the Body of Christ. All are important and all must work together to be effective.

Captain America was known for his moral uprightness and strong sense of authority, but was also seen to be arrogant when working with other strong personalities. Since he was so principled, he found it difficult to accept the differing opinions of others and became proud at the slightest challenge to his authority. When he overcame this, he led the team to victory. The Hulk’s story became a teaching on anger and the importance of taking responsibility. Delving into the character’s background, it was shown how past hurts and insecurity affect a person in their present. Instead of taking responsibility for his failings, the character consistently blamed them on ‘the other guy’. The youth were shown how to turn their weaknesses into strength: “take responsibility for your actions and submit to God”.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK

From Iron Man came a teaching on the armour of God and its importance to the success of a Christian life. Hawkeye brought an encouragement for the young people to see their role in the church as significant: “Don’t despise the gifts God has given you”.

The St Revolution team brought the Avengers to life, with six of the youth leaders each characterising a superhero. They each taught about the lessons that can be learnt from their character.

Black Widow was likened to the Apostle Paul. Both had done terrible things before joining their respective teams. From this, the youth were exhorted to not allow their past to affect their future.

The lesson from Thor was to speak highly of teammates. His character exhibited great care for those around him, even those who seemed less important. After these sessions, the film’s antagonist, Loki, was equated to the devil. Loki’s plan was to infiltrate the team and break them up from within. He set out to destroy the team’s unity, knowing that it was the only thing that could stop him from accomplishing his wicked plan. This demonstrated to the youth the necessity of unity to accomplish God’s purpose. THE POWER WITHIN Pastor Gerri Di Somma brought the final message of the Conference. Using the Hulk’s character as an illustration, he spoke about the role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians. “In the same way that the Hulk’s power was connected to the radiation that had entered him, we must recognise that we have God’s power because of the Holy Spirit who lives in us,” he said. ASSEMBLED FOR VICTORY From striking backdrop posters to powerful worship sessions, the Youth Conference was one to remember. Young people were filled with the Holy Spirit and empowered to achieve their potential. The importance of unity was not missed, as the St Revolution team worked together in unity to make the Conference a success. 7

REPAIRING THE ALTAR

OF GOD ARTICLE BY PASTOR GERRI DI SOMMA

Many people in the Old Testament built altars to God. These altars symbolised communion and fellowship with God. As such, they were places of worship and sacrifice, where God’s covenant was remembered and reconciliation between God and mankind was made possible. Today, Christians don’t build physical altars because Jesus became the sacrifice for our sins upon the ‘altar’ of Calvary. His sacrifice made it possible for mankind to be reconciled to God. However, it is still necessary for us to have a place of fellowship with God, a spiritual altar where we can worship and commune with Him. To establish this altar in our lives, we must follow the pattern for building altars that is found in the Old Testament. Since God is eternal, His principles and patterns are timeless and remain applicable. It’s vital to understand and build our lives upon the pattern of God’s altar because 8

those who neglect to do so construct other ‘altars’ to which they worship. Scripture reveals various alternative altars that replaced God’s pure altar. The following are three man-made substitutes and the one true altar of God. As you read, examine whether you have established any of these altars in your life: 1. THE IDOLATROUS ALTAR When God supernaturally delivered the Israelites out of Egypt, He first led them to Mount Sinai to instruct them in His ways. However, the Israelites wanted Moses to speak to them on

God’s behalf: they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.” Exodus 20:19. Therefore, Moses went up the mountain alone to meet God. Moses was gone longer than the people expected and they asked Aaron to construct a new ‘god’ for them to worship. At their request, Aaron fashioned a golden calf and built an altar to it (Exodus 32:1-6). Aaron replaced God’s true altar with an idolatrous altar. The Israelites hadn’t wanted to hear God speak and their actions show that they preferred

a life of self-seeking gratification: the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Exodus 32:6. Therefore, they needed a god who wouldn’t challenge their behaviour: a mute inanimate golden calf. This ‘god’ suited them because it placed no demands on them and they could do as they pleased. Christians who have areas of their lives that are self-gratifying, contrary to what God’s Word says, have built idolatrous altars. These people don’t want to hear God speak because it would make them accountable to change. This shows that they are unwilling to bring their lives into submission to God and His Word. Do you recognise any idolatrous altars in your life?

These people work for God to appease their conscience. Therefore, they don’t fully submit to His Word. Instead, they only comply with the sections with which they agree. Do you recognise any religious altars in your life? 3. THE MIXED ALTAR During the life of Elijah the prophet, King Ahab reigned over Israel. Ahab married Jezebel who was a worshipper of Baal, a false god. Subsequently, Ahab set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal, which he had built in Samaria. 1 Kings 16:32. Through this act, Ahab permitted Baal worship in Israel and there became two altars: God’s and Baal’s. As a

During Elijah’s life, God’s altar had been neglected by the king and the people and, as a result, was broken down. 1 Kings 18:30. Therefore, it needed repairing to the original specifications, not replaced with a man-made altar. By repairing the sacred altar, Elijah directed Israel’s devotion back to God. The sacred altar then, is a place of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God. Hebrews 6:1. This is not a one-off event, but a lifestyle of devotion. That’s why the Apostle Paul wrote: I die daily. 1 Corinthians 15:31. He daily brought his life into submission to God and His Word, allowing God’s truth to be the final authority. Christians who do likewise have built true, sacred altars where God is worshipped and His presence is experienced.

Christians who work for God without developing a genuine relationship with Him have built religious altars. It may appear that their worship is genuine, but they lack true intimacy with God and therefore they don’t experience His presence or power.

2. THE RELIGIOUS ALTAR Eli the priest gave his two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, responsibilities within God’s temple. They were supposed to serve, but instead they took the best portions of the offerings and exploited the people (1 Samuel 2:12-17, 22-25). Hophni and Phinehas served in God’s house because it was their duty, not because they loved God or wanted to worship Him. They replaced the true altar of God with a religious altar, one that merely followed formality and, as a result, lacked God’s presence: the word of the Lord was rare in those days. 1 Samuel 3:1. Christians who work for God without developing a genuine relationship with Him have built religious altars. It may appear that their worship is genuine, but they lack true intimacy with God and therefore they don’t experience His presence or power.

result, many people worshipped God and Baal – a mixed altar. Thus, Elijah challenged Israel: “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” 1 Kings 18:21. Christians who combine the sacred truth of God with secular mindsets have built mixed altars. For example, God’s Word and psychology are diametrically opposed. However, many Christians also follow the ‘god’ of psychology. These people create mixed altars and falter between two opinions, often choosing to be governed by preference rather than conviction.

REPAIRING THE ALTAR OF GOD If we recognise that we have been serving idolatrous, religious or mixed altars, we must repent of our dead works, return to God by faith and restore the pure altar of God. Elijah’s story shows us how we can build or restore a sacred altar. Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest: The prophets of Baal and Elijah would each construct an altar and call upon their respective deities. The one who answered by fire would be proclaimed as the true God (1 Kings 18:19-39).

4. THE SACRED ALTAR

The prophets of Baal earnestly called upon their gods the entire day but to no avail. Elijah then repaired God’s sacred altar and called upon His name. Instantly, God’s fire fell.

Idolatrous, religious and mixed altars are man-made; the pure altar of God is sacred and is built according to God’s pattern.

The steps that Elijah took to repair God’s altar are the pattern we must follow in order to repair our own sacred altar to God.

1. BRING ORDER

Elijah selected twelve stones to build the altar. The number twelve signifies governance and, in this instance, because Elijah used natural materials, it signifies natural, earthly governance. Governments bring order. These twelve stones then, indicate that we must first establish natural order in our lives. Since God is our creator and Saviour, He must be our first priority. Setting aside a daily time of personal devotion with God establishes rightful order in our lives. We must be disciplined and determined to encounter God every day; we are individually responsible to keep our passion for God alive.

Both the wood and the sacrifice point to Jesus, our salvation. This reveals that our altar of devotion must be Christ-centred. Our devotional times must celebrate the One who made our salvation possible: Jesus. Instead of presenting God with a list of requests, we should thank and praise Him for His redemptive work. 4. MATURE IN GOD’S WORD Next, Elijah poured twelve pots of water onto the sacrifice. Again, the number twelve signifies governance, but this time it indicates spiritual governance because water refers to

Likewise, when we follow the pattern to establish a Christ-centred altar of devotion, we can pray with confidence and know that God will hear and answer. Christians who pray, “Lord, if it is Your will,” reveal that they lack confidence that their prayers will be answered. Usually, these Christians don’t know God’s will because they haven’t discovered it through study of His Word. Discovering God’s will in His Word is vital to instill confidence into our prayer lives: Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 1 John 5:14.

Since God is our creator and Saviour, He must be our first priority. Setting aside a daily time of personal devotion with God establishes rightful order in our lives.

2. SET BOUNDARIES After Elijah built the stone altar, he dug a trench around it signifying a boundary. This reveals that once the order of godly devotions has been established, boundaries are necessary to protect it. If we’re not careful, distractions can easily interrupt our devotional time and draw our attention away from God. I have overcome this by setting a regular time and place of devotion. I only take my Bible with me and I discipline myself to not allow interruptions or distractions to rob me of my daily encounter with God. 3. CHRIST-CENTRED DEVOTION After building the altar and setting a boundary, Elijah put the wood in order and divided the sacrifice. The wood symbolises the ark, God’s vehicle of salvation for Noah and his family. The divided sacrifice is symbolic of God’s covenant with Abraham, which was a 10

God’s Word: that He [Jesus] might sanctify and cleanse her [the Church] with the washing of water by the word. Ephesians 5:26. Spiritual governance is two-fold: first and foremost, we are directly accountable to God who instructs us through His Word; secondly, we are accountable to the church leaders God places in our lives. We must submit to our leaders to receive instruction and guidance. These leaders are God’s gift to the church to teach and train us in God’s Word so that we may mature as Christians (Ephesians 4:11-16). 5. PRAY WITH CONFIDENCE Finally, Elijah prayed with confidence. He had restored God’s sacred altar to the required specifications and therefore he didn’t doubt that God would respond. God’s answer was immediate and powerful: the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice. 1 Kings 18:38.

LET THE FIRE FALL! If you recognise an idolatrous, religious or mixed altar in your life, repent and turn back to God. Restore the sacred altar of God by establishing a daily time of Christ-centred devotion. Set boundaries and use your devotional time to praise God and to mature in His Word. Elijah repaired God’s altar and God demonstrated His power by sending His fire to consume the sacrifice. As a result: when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!” 1 Kings 18:39. Repair the sacred altar of God in your life and God’s miraculous power can be demonstrated in your life, situation, family, business and community, drawing others into a relationship with Him.

Our devotional times must celebrate the One who made our salvation possible: Jesus. Instead of presenting God with a list of requests, we should thank and praise Him for His redemptive work.

Thanksgiving is a subject that is emphasised repeatedly in God’s Word and, as such, we should pay attention to its importance. Giving thanks is an expression of gratitude and, in relation to our Christian lives, it means vocalising our thanks from a heart of gratitude towards God for who He is and what He has done. WHAT’S IN AN ATTITUDE? Gratitude is not automatic; it’s a heart attitude that must be developed. If we’re not careful, negative circumstances can draw our hearts 12

away from God and cause us to become disgruntled. Complaining words follow quickly on the lips of someone who is disgruntled and, sadly, these complaints mar the true image of God in their sight. Complaining causes us to focus on our circumstances and to cast doubt on God’s character. The slippery slope continues as our complaints turn to ingratitude. The Bible warns about the consequences of ingratitude. In the Old Testament, the Israelites displayed an ungrateful attitude through their complaining. God had delivered them from harsh Egyptian taskmasters and

desired to lead them into the Promised Land, Canaan. However, whilst on their journey, they grumbled about their circumstances and brought complaints against God and His elected leaders (Exodus 15:22-24; 16:1-12). These complaints, as well as other sins, caused a forty-year delay in the Israelites entering Canaan. Instead of enjoying their God ordained destiny, they wandered in the desert, where many of them died (Numbers 14:2034). The Bible tells us that their actions were recorded as an example for us today, so that we might not become ensnared in the same way (1 Corinthians 10:1-11).

We must heed the Bible’s warning and guard our hearts when difficult circumstances seek to captivate our thoughts and emotions and draw our hearts away from God. Instead of complaining, we must develop an attitude of gratitude towards God in all situations. DEVELOP AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE Human nature has a tendency to focus on the negative aspects of life. That’s why it’s vital for us to develop a new attitude, one of thanksgiving. Just like a bad attitude can be developed, so can a thankful attitude. However, since an attitude of gratitude is not automatic, it is our responsibility to practice and cultivate thanksgiving so that it becomes an instinctive response in every circumstance, good or bad. It is necessary for us to develop a thankful attitude because the Bible reveals that it is a prerequisite to intimacy with God: Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving. Psalm 95:2; Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Psalm 100:4. Considering this, and the fact that God’s presence lives in Spirit-filled Christians, these scriptures indicate that thanksgiving is not a one-off event. Rather, it must be a lifestyle. Furthermore, the Bible shows us reasons why we should thank God, and the benefits of developing thanksgiving as a lifestyle: 1. THANKSGIVING FOR GOD’S GOODNESS Primarily, we thank God because He is good: Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34. God’s goodness never changes; He always has been and always will be good. It is essential that we understand and believe this truth about God’s character, otherwise we become easy targets for the devil who attempts to deceive us with lies such as, ‘God doesn’t heal all people’. Believing these and other lies will cause us to doubt God’s goodness and cease thanking Him.

We must realise that God is good and only gives good gifts (James 1:17). Therefore, no matter what situations we encounter, we can thank God because of His inherent goodness. 2. THANKSGIVING IS GOD’S WILL Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. This scripture reveals that it is God’s will for us to be thankful in every situation. This doesn’t mean that we are to be thankful for the situation itself, because it might be an unpleasant or difficult circumstance. However, it does mean that we must give thanks during the challenging times as well as the trouble-free times. We must be attentive to give thanks at all times. Often, Christians give thanks when they’re at Church but neglect to give thanks during the remainder of the week. Developing a lifestyle of thanksgiving requires us to give thanks consistently. 3. THANKSGIVING OPENS THE WAY TO PEACE God gives every Christian supernatural peace (John 14:27). However, our peace is usually the first thing that disappears when we face trials or difficulties. This is because we become anxious and look for alternative solutions rather than trusting and thanking God for His solution. That’s why the Apostle Paul wrote: Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7. Paul’s words reveal that when we pray with thanksgiving, God will fill our hearts and minds with peace, even during the most difficult of situations. 4. THANKSGIVING OPENS THE DOOR TO THE MIRACULOUS Luke’s gospel tells the story of ten lepers who came to Jesus for healing (Luke 17:11-19). Jesus told them to

present themselves to the priests. As they went, they were all healed. The account emphasises that all ten lepers received healing, but only one returned to give thanks: And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks (verses 15-16). In response to the man’s gratitude, Jesus said to him: “Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole” (verse 19, KJV). There is a significant difference between healing and wholeness. In this instance, all ten men were healed: they were no longer leprous. But the one who gave thanks was made whole. In other words, any parts of his body that had been permanently damaged by the disease were restored to their original condition. 5. THANKSGIVING GLORIFIES GOD Thanking God declares that we trust and rely upon Him in every situation. Our thanksgiving proclaims to the heavens, the earth, the devil and our circumstances that we believe God is good and that nothing is impossible with Him. This glorifies God because His virtues are extolled and He is acknowledged as the source of our help, healing and deliverance: But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57; I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving. Psalm 69:30. LIFT UP YOUR VOICE IN THANKSGIVING Examine your attitude and the words that you speak. Are they words of gratitude and thanksgiving or words of murmuring and complaining? Determine to develop an attitude of gratitude by giving God thanks in every situation. It is God’s will that you give thanks for His goodness and that you experience His peace and miraculous working in your life. Don’t allow your circumstances to draw your focus away from God. Glorify God by cultivating thanksgiving as a lifestyle. 13

God speaks prophetically to His children individually and to His Church corporately. Therefore, it’s essential for us to understand the purpose of prophecy, how prophecy operates and what our response towards it should be. The Greek word for prophecy ‘propheteia’ means speaking forth the mind and counsel of God. The Bible reveals that the purpose of New Testament prophecy is to edify, exhort and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3). Prophecy then, is a supernatural utterance spoken in a known tongue under the anointing of God to edify, exhort and comfort.

A PROPHETIC MESSAGE

Elijah’s actions reveal how we must prepare ourselves to see the manifestation of God’s promises when He speaks to us prophetically.

During 2012, Carmel received a prophecy containing the words: But you don’t give up on your dream, because you see, I hear the abundance of the sound of a mighty rain... and just like Elijah outran those horses, you’re going to outrun trouble, you’re going to outrun debt, and you’re going to run right into money! This prophecy relates to the passages of scripture concerning the prophet Elijah, King Ahab and the prophets of Baal during a difficult time in Israel’s history. The prophecy was a significant word from God to the church at Carmel. It encouraged us to know that we are heading in the right direction and it confirmed God’s promise of blessing. In addition, the biblical story referenced 14

The story recounts the time when Elijah prophesied that there would be drought in the land until God spoke through him again. Over three years later, God told Elijah that He would send rain (1 Kings 17-18).

1. GOD GIVES A WORD TO PREPARE US God told Elijah: “Present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the earth.” 1 Kings 18:1. Elijah’s immediate response shows that he believed God’s word. Likewise, when God speaks prophetically to us, we must believe His word and take appropriate action. God only speaks truth; He doesn’t lie (Numbers 23:19). We mustn’t be swayed by circumstances or emotions that seem to contradict God’s word to us. Rather, we must believe Him and

not allow anything to dissuade us from the truth that God will accomplish what He has spoken: “So shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11. 2. DELAY DOES NOT MEAN DENIED When Elijah met Ahab at God’s command, Ahab accused him of being a troublemaker, indicating that he blamed Elijah for the on-going drought. However, Elijah’s response shows that Ahab’s wandering from God’s commandments had caused the drought and the delay in the rain falling. Before the drought could be broken, Ahab’s actions needed to be confronted (1 Kings 18:17-18). Similarly, when the fulfilment of God’s prophetic words seem to be delayed in our lives, it’s possible that there are things we have neglected to do, that there are things we need to confront. When God’s promise doesn’t manifest immediately or within our preferred timescale, we must remain in faith. If the promise seems to be delayed, it

doesn’t mean that it has been denied. We must continue to believe God and His word and remain obedient to His commands. 3. ELIMINATE ALL DOUBT The Israelites had been worshipping at God’s altar and Baal’s altar. Elijah said to them: “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” 1 Kings 18:21. Elijah challenged the Israelites to make a choice. Worshipping God and Baal was causing them to ‘falter’ between two differing opinions. Equally, we must have faith regarding God’s word to us. Often, doubt is the ‘other opinion’ that will attempt to make us falter. Doubt will cause us to waver at God’s truth and wonder whether He will bring His promise to pass. James, the brother of Jesus, put it this way: he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind... let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. James 1:6-8. We must allow God’s truth – the truth in His written Word and the truth of His prophetic word – to permeate our hearts and minds so that His truth becomes our personal conviction. If He said it, He will do it. Our part is to not allow doubt to cause us to falter. 4. REPAIR THE ALTAR OF GOD Elijah repaired God’s altar (1 Kings 18:30). He didn’t simply replace it; he repaired it to God’s specifications (see ‘Repairing the Altar of God’ on pages 8-11). Christians today restore God’s altar by establishing a daily time of fellowship with Him. This is vital to the success of our lives and the fulfilment of the prophetic word. Using our devotional times to read, meditate and pray over our prophecies will cause God’s prophetic word to become real to us. This is how faith is established in our hearts: faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17.

4. SPEAK WORDS OF FAITH After repairing God’s altar, Elijah said: “Fill four waterpots with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood.” 1 Kings 18:33. Elijah spoke in faith when he called the sacrifice ‘burnt’ before it had been consumed with fire. Elijah already knew the end result; he was simply speaking it out. Likewise, when God confirms His plan for us through a prophecy, we must believe His word and declare it by faith, knowing that God calls those things which do not exist as though they did. Romans 4:17.

When God’s promise doesn’t manifest immediately or within our preferred timescale, we must remain in faith. If the promise seems to be delayed, it doesn’t mean that it has been denied.

5. PRAY ACCORDING TO GOD’S WORD Elijah demonstrated two types of prayer in these passages of scripture: Public and private. Public prayer demonstrates God’s power (1 Kings 18:36-42); private intercession is for God’s provision, in this instance, rain (1 Kings 18:42-45). It’s important to note that Elijah prayed according to God’s word; God said that He would send rain and Elijah prayed for it. We mustn’t assume that God’s promises will automatically happen; our private intercession is necessary for God’s promises to be made manifest: He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6. Our intercession determines our possession; Elijah sent his servant to look for the manifestation eight times. I HEAR THE SOUND OF AN ABUNDANCE OF RAIN Finally, God’s word came to pass: the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. 1 Kings 18:45. If God has confirmed His plan and purpose for your life through a prophecy, you must believe that He will bring it to pass. Like Elijah, your part is to believe God, eliminate doubt, repair God’s altar, speak words of faith and pray in line with God’s word. Don’t become impatient; remain faithful to what God has spoken and allow His purposes to come to pass in His timing. 15

When we offer heartfelt praise to God in the midst of a difficult situation, the enemy will be confused and God will fight our battles for us.

Praising God is an important aspect of our Christian lives that can easily be neglected. However, it’s vital for us to recognise the significance of praise as a lifestyle because praise has the power to lead individuals and churches into their God-given victory and destiny. The biblical account of King Jehoshaphat gives us insight regarding praise leading to victory and destiny. Jehoshaphat was a God-fearing king; his heart took delight in the ways of the Lord. 2 Chronicles 17:6. He ruled Judah at the time when Ahab was king of Israel. Unlike Jehoshaphat, Ahab did not fear God, but did evil in the sight of the Lord. 1 Kings 16:30.

(2 Chronicles 18:1; 2 Kings 8:16-18). Years later, Ahab asked Jehoshaphat to go to war with him against the king of Syria in order to retrieve the city of Ramoth Gilead. The Syrian king had previously promised to return this city to Ahab, but failed to fulfil his promise (1 Kings 20:34; 22:3). Jehoshaphat agreed to go to war with Ahab but requested that they first inquire for the word of the Lord. 1 Kings 22:5.

A ROYAL ALLEGIANCE OBEY THE WORD OF THE LORD During his reign, King Jehoshaphat made an alliance with King Ahab through the marriage of their children 16

Ahab gathered 400 prophets who unanimously said that God would

deliver Ramoth Gilead into his hands. Jehoshaphat then asked: “Is there not still a prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of him?” 2 Chronicles 18:6. His question indicates that the 400 prophets were false prophets who had not spoken the truth about the situation. In response to Jehoshaphat’s question, Ahab summoned the prophet Micaiah, who was known to only speak God’s words (2 Chronicles 18:13). Micaiah prophesied that Ahab would die in the battle yet, despite these words, Ahab and Jehoshaphat still went to war.

Ahab died in the battle just as Micaiah had prophesied and Jehoshaphat returned home to Jerusalem unharmed. However, due to his alliance with the ungodly king, Ahab, God’s wrath was upon Jehoshaphat and the kings of Moab, Ammon and Mount Seir came to battle against him (2 Chronicles 18:28-34; 19:1-2; 20:1-2, 10).

declared his dependence upon God (2 Chronicles 30:12). Likewise, when the devil, our enemy, attacks our inheritance, we must repent of our mistakes and pray, humble ourselves before God and depend upon Him to give us a strategy to overcome. 2. BE UNITED IN PRAYER

Jehoshaphat was in a desperate situation; his failure to obey God’s commands had caused enemies to attack him and his inheritance. However, his following actions reveal how praise led him to victory and destiny. God responded to Jehoshaphat because he applied spiritual principles that cannot fail. When we discover that our disobedience has opened a door for our enemy, the devil, to attack our inheritance, we too can apply these same spiritual principles and obtain victory. 1. REPENT AND SEEK GOD Jehoshaphat’s immediate response was to seek the Lord and to proclaim a fast throughout Judah. This indicates that he repented from his ungodly choices regarding Ahab. Jehoshaphat humbled himself before God and, together with the inhabitants of Judah who had gathered, asked God for His help (2 Chronicles 20:3-4). There are three significant points regarding Jehoshaphat’s prayer. Firstly, his prayer focused on God, the one with the ability to deliver them from their enemies: “O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You? ” 2 Chronicles 20:6.

We mustn’t underestimate the power of unity; it is significant because God blesses it (Psalm 133). As such, every mighty move of God happens in an atmosphere of unity. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost is one such example. Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah also experienced the power of unity. As they united in prayer, God spoke prophetically to them, giving them direction to overcome their difficult situation: “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s… You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.” 2 Chronicles 20:15, 17. Even though God had not given Jehoshaphat a conventional battle strategy, Jehoshaphat believed God’s word and obeyed Him. Similarly, we must unite ourselves with God’s Word regarding our circumstances. We mustn’t become distracted by the enemy’s schemes but we must unwaveringly believe and obey God’s instructions. 3. CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE OF PRAISE

Secondly, Jehoshaphat reminded God of His covenant with His people. Jehoshaphat knew that God was bound to His covenant and therefore he reminded God of the promises He had made to His people concerning their inheritance (2 Chronicles 20:7-11).

Upon receiving direction from God, Jehoshaphat and the people worshipped and praised Him: Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshipping the Lord. Then the Levites… stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high. 2 Chronicles 20:18-19.

Thirdly, Jehoshaphat acknowledged his own inability to defeat the enemy and

that God would fulfil His word, they were unafraid to step outside of their comfort zones and enter the wilderness to face their enemy. Furthermore, Jehoshaphat appointed people to praise God as they went out before the army of their enemies (2 Chronicles 20:20-21). Equally, we must create an atmosphere of praise where God is exalted regardless of our circumstances. This will position us for victory. 4. PRAISE YOUR WAY TO VICTORY Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah didn’t approach their enemies with physical weapons of warfare; they simply praised God. Praise was their position of victory. In this atmosphere of praise, the enemy became confused and instead of attacking Judah, they attacked and defeated each other (2 Chronicles 20:22-24). Likewise, when God speaks to us, either directly or through the Bible, and we believe and obey Him, we can praise Him from a position of victory. When we offer heartfelt praise to God in the midst of a difficult situation, the enemy will be confused and God will fight our battles for us. THE VICTOR RECEIVES THE SPOILS OF WAR God responded to Jehoshaphat’s and Judah’s repentance, unity, obedience and praise. He delivered them from their enemy because they took their position of victory: praise. In addition, God provided them with the treasures of their enemies: an abundance of valuables… and precious jewelry. 2 Chronicles 20:25. There was so much treasure that it took them three days to collect it all. Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah were victorious and their inheritance was secured. Their God-given destiny was protected and they lived in peace (2 Chronicles 20:29-30). If you recognise an area of your life where the enemy is attacking your inheritance, take your position of victory today. Pray, unite yourself to God’s Word, praise God and continue to praise Him until your victory is obtained. 17

COMING HOME Jesus told a parable about a son who left the safety of his father’s house and chose his own way in life. Eventually, the young man’s unwise choices led him to a desperate situation. When he decided to return home, his father welcomed him with open arms. The parable illustrates God’s unconditional love towards His children. SHAMUS BIRCH I grew up in a Christian environment: my pare nts and extended family are Christians and we went to Church every week. As a teenager I was a popu lar person, but feelings of loneliness, emptiness and depression consumed me. I knew that my life was missing something. At secondary school, I discovered that my peer s also experienced depression and emptiness. It appe ared that they tried to fill what was missing in their lives with drugs, cigarettes, alcohol and sex. Due to my stron g Christian background, I didn’t get involved in these activities, but I still felt empty on the inside. These were very dark times. Almost every day I cried out to God, “There must be more to life than this” . Then, one night at Church, I responded to an invita tion to rededicate my life to Jesus. That decision chan ged everything. As I prayed a prayer of rededication, peace

and joy flooded into my heart and every weight of depression vanished. Whereas life had previously been bleak and depressing, it now had colour and hope . Now, my life is full of God’s joy and peace and I am passionate about serving Him. I no longer fear the future but am secure in the destiny that God has for me. If I hadn’t rededicated my life to Jesus that night, I believe that the depression would have led me to suicide. I’ve recently completed two years of Bible College and am now attending an intensive leadership training course. I’m enjoying the adventure of walking with God every day.
