HE SENT THEM TO PREACH THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND TO HEAL THE SICK. LUKE 9:2

WELCOME What an amazing year we have had so far! We have continued to see God building His Church by adding to our spiritual family through salvations, child dedications and new members. Our Prayer, Praise and Prophecy Conference in June was once again off the charts as the Holy Spirit moved powerfully during these meetings with Pastor Paul Brady. You can read more about the Conference on pages 6-7 of the magazine. Our Sunday Evening Services have also gone to another level as we continue to flow in the prayer, praise and prophecy meetings The anointing and power from our services overflowed to the annual youth camp from which came numerous reports of salvation, healing and rededication. We know that lives have been changed forever as the

CONTENTS young people encountered God. We’ve included a report of the camp on page 5, plus testimonies on page 18. In this issue you can also read about CBC Bristol’s graduation (page 4) when students from the first and second year programmes were joined by friends and family as they celebrated the successful completion of their studies. As well as teachings by us both, you can read teachings from Pastor Sean Leask and, visiting speaker, Pastor Russell Blackman who blessed us richly. We trust that this issue will inspire and encourage you on your journey of faith as you continue to ‘Enjoy the Journey’.

CBC: 2014 GRADUATION Graduation marks the culmination of all the hard work and study of God’s Word undertaken by the students of Carmel Bible College (CBC). This year marked CBC’s 18th Graduation Ceremony and, without a doubt, it was once again the highlight of their academic year.

lives; if Jesus isn’t first, someone or something else is,” said Pastor John. The students were told that there are no excuses for putting other things first, because God promises that when He is given first place, everything a Christian has need of is provided by Him (Matthew 6:33).

GRADUATING CLASS OF 2013 – 2014

Using the example of the Macedonian Christians, Pastor John explained that once Christians have given themselves to God, they must utilise their Godgiven talents and abilities for God’s Kingdom. The Apostle Paul wrote about these Christians: they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God. 2 Corinthians 8:5. Pastor John expounded upon this using the parable of the talents: “God has given us all talents and abilities. He doesn’t want us to give our best to the world and give Him our leftovers.” Pastor John emphasised that the quantity or quality of God-given abilities is not significant in itself, but what Christians do with them is vital. “God expects a return on the talents He gives. He doesn’t reward what He’s already given us,” he said. “We’re accountable for what we do with our talents and God rewards our faithfulness.”

The song, ‘Our God Reigns’ rang out in celebration as the students entered the auditorium of Carmel City Church. Three students carried the flags of the UK, South Africa and Carmel Bible College. At the end of the procession, these flags were added to a display of others representing the different nationalities of students who have completed their studies at CBC. GRADUATION GUEST SPEAKER CBC’s founder, Pastor Gerri Di Somma, welcomed Pastor John Quintanilla as this year’s graduation speaker. Pastor John and his wife, Sally, are graduates of CBC. Together, they are the Senior Pastors of Hebron Christian Faith Church in Coventry, UK. Pastor John addressed the students concerning their lives as CBC graduates. He exhorted them to give their best to God by giving themselves to Him first and foremost. The students were told that putting God first is a principle to obtain God’s blessings, promotion and direction. “There is only one first place in our 4

The students were encouraged to make the most of opportunities to prove themselves as faithful, even in the seemingly small and insignificant tasks. “If you’re not faithful in the small opportunities you have today, you’re never going to have a

greater opportunity tomorrow,” Pastor John declared. Pastor John showed how Moses proved his faithfulness by doing exactly what God instructed him to do (Hebrews 3:1-6). The students were challenged to prove their own faithfulness by obeying God and their leaders in whatever is asked of them to establish God’s kingdom. Pastor John concluded by stating that faithfulness is proven over time, but it leads to God’s promotion. GRADUATED! Following the message, the students were awarded for their achievements and successes. Friends and families of the students cheered and applauded as their loved ones received their diploma certificates. The graduates then sang the CBC anthem, declaring, ‘We’ll walk worthy of the calling that God has given to us.’ Next, Pastor Gerri led the students in the tassel ceremony, during which the students moved the tassel on their caps from the right to the left side, signifying their transition from student to graduate. At the end of the evening, graduates gathered on the main stage for photographs to be taken as a reminder of this wonderful occasion.

YOUTH CAMP 2014

A week of camping in a remote field is not a popular holiday destination for most, but for Carmel’s youth ministry, ‘St Revolution’, it is perfect. Without the rest of the world to distract them, young people are free to have fun, make friends and encounter God in ways they never have before. This year’s camp took place in July on the banks of the picturesque River Wye, and the week began with the delegates being arranged into teams ready for the events ahead. BRING ON THE GAMES! Far from any reliable internet connection, the teams enjoyed contending for the top prize through a variety of games and activities. From wrestling in inflatable sumo suits to t-shirt designing, everyone contributed, bringing their individual skills to help their team win. PUTTING ON GOD’S ARMOUR Working from a foundation of friendship and trust, the Saint Revolution leaders led their groups in morning devotions, which were followed by ‘life skills’ sessions. These teachings centred on the camp’s theme, ‘The Armour of God’ taken from Ephesians 6:10-18. Each day, the teaching focused on a different piece of the armour and the delegates were shown how each part of the armour is a tool that God has made available to them. For many, these sessions transitioned them

from surface level knowledge to deep spiritual understanding. ENCOUNTERING GOD’S PRESENCE The culmination of each day was the evening rally. Led into worship by the St Revolution band, the youth encountered God’s presence, power and love. With salvations, recommitments and fresh infillings of God’s Spirit, everyone was touched in some way.

The following is an overview of the messages taught during the life skills sessions: The first piece of God’s armour that the youth studied was the ‘belt of truth’. The importance of the belt was brought to their attention when they were shown how every other piece of the armour is held together by the belt. The youth were told that wearing the belt of truth means building their lives upon the biblical foundation of God’s truth. Next, the young people were taught how the ‘breastplate of righteousness’ signifies everything God has done for them. They were challenged to remind themselves daily of their righteous position in Him. Through the ‘sandals of peace’, the youth were encouraged to examine their behaviour towards others and to make peace by settling unresolved disputes. With the ‘shield of faith’, the youth talked about the types of attacks

to their Christian beliefs that are encountered in secular society. Together, they discussed how to apply their faith to combat these attacks. Following this, the ‘helmet of salvation’ was identified as the most visible piece of the armour. The delegates were exhorted to display their salvation clearly and confidently to those around them. Lastly, the ‘sword of the Spirit’ was highlighted as being God’s Word and the only offensive part of the armour. The youth were taught that they enforce the devil’s defeat and stand strong in Christ by reading, believing and declaring God’s Word. PREPARED FOR VICTORY In addition to these morning teachings, guest speakers from Carmel City Church attended the evening rallies and brought messages that empowered and challenged the young people to stand strong in God and His truth. The change in the lives of the young people was visibly evident by the end of the week. It was common to see groups of youngsters gather for impromptu prayer sessions and to witness hands raised in unhindered worship. To seal their commitment, twelve youngsters were baptised in the River Wye, and there were countless testimonies of God’s goodness. 5

PRAYER, PRAISE

& PROPHECY Conference Pastor Paul Brady, the annual guest speaker for Carmel’s Prayer, Praise and Prophecy Conference brought words of wisdom and encouragement over three consecutive nights in June at Carmel City Church.

The following is an overview of Pastor Paul’s teaching, with a particular emphasis to his Friday evening message that addressed the current transitional position of Carmel City Church: TODAY’S CONFLICT IS TOMORROW’S PRODUCTIVITY On Friday evening, Pastor Paul began the Conference by drawing attention to God’s original command to mankind: “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:28. The congregation were told that, as a church, they will subdue by transitioning to the next level. Pastor Paul explained that during the transition, people may find themselves experiencing conflict of one type or another. “Although conflict in itself does not signify transition,” he said. “It is necessary, because God uses times of conflict to bring about times of production. Today’s conflict is tomorrow’s productivity.” The congregation were cautioned to not 6

run away from situations of conflict since they are opportunities to grow in faith and become sharpened in the knowledge of God’s Word. HOLD FAST TO THE DIRECTION OF THE LORD Pastor Paul then showed that the word ‘change’ can be written as ‘cHANGe’. He exhorted the congregation to HANG in there; in other words, to hold tenaciously onto their faith and the vision of the church in order to see the change of transition manifested. “Conflict is an indicator of a process of change taking place,” he said, pointing out that processes can be more powerful than principles. Sowing and reaping was used as an example of a principle that is void without any process. “You might feel as if you are at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Pastor Paul declared, “But change is underway and you can’t get out now!” Pastor Paul highlighted that ‘getting out’ might seem to be the easiest option, but it is like divorce: wretchedly painful in the end. The congregation were alerted to the fact that running away from conflict shows selfishness and they were reminded to ‘hang in there’. The Apostle Paul was used as an example of someone who didn’t run away from conflict: “Paul did not stay at Ephesus because it was a comfortable

holiday resort, but because there were great opportunities there,” explained Pastor Paul. “He stayed in Ephesus despite much opposition, realising that it did not denote that he was in the wrong place.” The congregation were urged that they, too, must realise that being in God’s perfect will does not mean that life will always be easy. “Hold fast to the direction and the course of the Lord,” exhorted Pastor Paul. CARMEL IS NOT A NORMAL CHURCH Pastor Paul reminded the congregation that God is building His blueprint at Carmel that will stand the test of time. “Carmel is not a normal church,” he prophesied. “It is a church whose voice will reach to the four corners of the earth, and Pastor Gerri’s voice will silence and steady other voices. Those who want the truth will hear his voice and stay in the truth.” Pastor Paul then urged Pastor Gerri to speak boldly about the things the Spirit of God tells him in order to bring people out of deception and erroneous teaching. Following this, Pastor Paul exhorted the congregation: “The further your Pastor goes, the further you will go. You are not set in a valley, but on a hilltop, and your footprint is increasing and becoming more evident to people.” Pastor Paul continued by stating

C:VIEW

that every Christian has a God-given assignment to accomplish. The congregation were warned to not get caught in the trap of seeking God just for the sake of experiencing Him or feeling His presence. “The presence of God in this church is unmistakeable,” he said. “But we need to worship God and pray to Him so that we can be used by Him.” Pastor Paul explained that Christians who seek only an experience or a touch from God become unproductive because they are self-seeking. “Are you a self-seeker or a God-seeker?” he challenged. Pastor Paul also highlighted that Godgiven gifts are not for the benefit of the individual Christian, but for the benefit of others. “Those who humble themselves will be exalted in due season,” he said. “Jesus humbled himself for thirty years to be used for three and a half.” The congregation were urged to become God-seekers, like Jesus, in order to be productive in His Kingdom. PRAYER EMPOWERS PRODUCTIVITY “Prayer is the key to what this nation needs,” declared Pastor Paul. “But the sad fact is that very few people pray and yet we expect productivity.” Pastor Paul explained that prayer helps Christians to discover and fulfil their destiny, therefore empowering productivity. He encouraged the

attendees to stop trying to figure out their own future and told them to simply pray. The congregation were also encouraged to pray God’s perfect will by praying in the Holy Spirit according to Scripture: Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26. Pastor Paul emphasised that praying in tongues is a continual thing, and commented that if it was good enough for the Apostle Paul, then it’s good enough for Christians today (1 Thessalonians 5:17; 1 Corinthians 14:18). THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PRAYER On Saturday and Sunday evening, Pastor Paul continued to teach about the importance and effectiveness of prayer. “Without prayer, nothing will happen,” he said. The attendees were shown how Jesus was effective because of His relationship with God through prayer. “Jesus had what others needed because of His relationship with the Father,” affirmed Pastor Paul. “We must also have what others need, but it entails seeking God intentionally.” Pastor Paul exhorted the congregation to invest their time into God in order

to know what God is saying. He highlighted that this requires listening. “You have nothing to say until you are ready to listen to God, and good listeners make good speakers,” he said. “You have to hear from God before you will know what to say.” The power of prayer was shown through the account of Peter’s miraculous release from prison after Herod threw him in jail to gain favour with the people (Acts 12:1-19). “The faithful Christians were praying with such fervency,” said Pastor Paul, “that Peter had no hope of staying in jail!” Pastor Paul concluded that every church should breed a culture of prayer because nothing supernatural happens without prayer. “Operations of heaven are activated through prayer,” he declared. “Heaven needs your voice.” TRANSITION FOR THE MISSION Many people were impacted by the teachings brought during this Conference, and they committed themselves afresh to the Lord and to prayer. In addition, times of powerful worship and corporate prayer enabled the conference attendees to draw closer to God, ready to transition for God’s mission. 7

THE

HEART A

FATHER ARTICLE BY PASTOR GERRI DI SOMMA

8

OF

This message is part of Pastor Gerri Di Somma’s series entitled, ‘A Matter Of The Heart’. This concluding message addressing the heart of a father was preached on Father’s Day. The condition of our hearts is important because it determines our words and behaviour (Luke 6:43-45). Eventually, the words and actions that come from our hearts will affect our lives and the lives of others. That’s why King Solomon’s wisdom urges us to guard our hearts diligently because life’s issues flow from the heart of every person (Proverbs 4:23). The Bible is full of stories about people with different heart conditions. For example, Eve had a deceptive heart, Enoch, a committed heart, Noah, an obedient heart, Ruth, a loyal heart, Esther, a submitted heart and David was a man after God’s own heart. Each of their heart conditions determined their words and actions, which affected their lives individually and the lives of others. REVEALING GOD’S FATHER HEART When Jesus came to earth, He demonstrated God’s Father heart, revealing it as a heart of love. The Gospels record the ways Jesus demonstrated God’s love: He was moved with compassion, He sought and saved those who were lost, He healed the sick, delivered the demonpossessed and freed those who were captivated by worldly possessions or lusts (Matthew 14:14, 18:11; Mark 5:1-20; Luke 19:1-10). It was essential that Jesus demonstrated the Father heart of God, because the religious leaders of the day were portraying an incorrect image of God. Similarly, parents today can portray an incorrect image of God to their children by the words and actions that come from their hearts. In particular, a father’s heart is significant because children view God the Father based upon the actions of their earthly fathers. Therefore, if earthly fathers do not demonstrate the Father heart of God, their children grow up with a wrong perception of God’s character and nature. For instance, fathers who are harsh and austere communicate that God is harsh and austere. But fathers who

discipline their children in love, showing mercy and forgiveness, communicate God’s true nature. Even absentee fathers communicate something about God to their children. Sadly, their message is that God is distant and uncaring. We too, as adults, may have wrong perceptions of God’s character based upon our earthly father’s behaviour. It’s vital that we discover God’s true heart towards us. This is not in order to judge, condemn or correct our natural fathers, but so that we can relate to God as He originally intended and demonstrate His nature to others, including our children. Let’s examine how a godly father’s heart responds. UNDERSTANDING GOD’S FATHER HEART Jesus told a parable about a lost son, more commonly known as the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-31). Jesus used this parable to describe the way God the Father responds to His children. Since God is the perfect Father, a godly father’s heart must be the same as His heart. The parable describes a father who had two sons. His youngest son wanted to claim his inheritance before the rightful time. Upon receiving his inheritance, he left home and recklessly spent all his money, leaving him destitute, famished and tending pigs. When he recognised the error of his ways, he returned home to seek his father’s forgiveness and ask for employment in his father’s house as a servant. However, rather than hiring him as a servant, the father gladly welcomed him back into the household. This story provides us with seven signs of a godly father: 1. GODLY FATHERS PROVIDE FOR THEIR CHILDREN As fathers, it’s our responsibility to provide for our children. This includes providing an emotionally stable home, opportunities to excel socially and the best possible education. Additionally, we must provide an inheritance for our children that will sustain them and their families when we’re no longer alive: A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.

Proverbs 13:22. The father in the parable had an inheritance ready for his sons. We know this because the youngest son asked for his share of it before it was due (Luke 15:12). 2. GODLY FATHERS RESPECT THEIR CHILDREN’S DECISIONS The prodigal son made unwise choices when he left home and wasted his inheritance. Yet, his father did not stop him, but respected his decisions (Luke 15:12-13). Likewise, there will be times when we need to respect the decisions our children make. As children reach their teenage years, they start expressing views and opinions that differ from our own. However, we must give them their right to an opinion so that they can develop their own ideas and mature into adulthood. We should also allow them the freedom to make some of their own choices, unless they are immoral. It’s a good idea to talk to them about the possible consequences of their decisions so that they can learn to make wise and godly choices. Once they leave the security of our homes, we must trust that they are able to make the right decisions on their own. 3. GODLY FATHERS PRAY FOR THEIR CHILDREN Since it’s impossible to genuinely pray for someone when our hearts are hard or bitter towards them, it’s evident that the father in the parable prayed for his son because of his response when his son returned home. The father was not angry, frustrated or irritated with his son; rather he openly displayed his compassion, love and affection for him: when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. Luke 15:20. Additionally, the father was waiting and watching for his son’s return, showing that he expected God to answer his prayers. Likewise, as godly fathers, we should pray for our children. We must pray that they make godly decisions that will bless their lives. And if there are occasions when our children make ungodly choices, we must continue to pray for them, expecting God to lead them back to Himself and His truth. 9

Those of us who have been born again have the status of being God’s children and He provides all our needs. Hallelujah!

10

4. GODLY FATHERS DON’T TAKE THINGS PERSONALLY

have the opportunity to make better choices in the future.

The father of the prodigal recognised that his son’s foolish actions were not a reflection of him personally or his fatherly qualities, but a reflection of his son. He understood that people make their own decisions for their own reasons, so he didn’t view his son’s behaviour as an attack against his fatherhood. Therefore, when his son returned and repented, he didn’t correct or reprimand his son. On the contrary, the father welcomed and accepted him home (Luke 15:21-22).

6. GODLY FATHERS RESTORE THEIR CHILDREN’S POSITION.

God taught me this lesson when I counselled my children and their future spouses before they got married. The pre-marriage counselling sessions required them to describe their home life while they were growing up. I was shocked at their responses, because they didn’t sound like the family environment my wife and I had provided for them. Nevertheless, the Holy Spirit showed me that they had each experienced their childhood years differently based upon many factors. Rather than attempt to defend myself, I learnt to not take it personally. 5. GODLY FATHERS COVER THEIR CHILDREN’S SHAME When his son returned, the father said to his servants: ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him.’ Luke 15:22. No doubt, after tending pigs, the son’s appearance and smell was unpleasant. By clothing him with a robe, the father covered his filthiness, therefore, covering the shame of his actions. Equally, as godly fathers, we mustn’t expose the shame of our children when they make mistakes. Even though their actions may hurt and disappoint us, when they repent, we must embrace them and cover their shame so that they can live free from guilt and

Although the son had asked to return to his father’s house as a servant, the father’s immediate response was to restore him to his position of a son. He did this by adorning him with the best robe, a ring and sandals (Luke 15:2122). As a servant, he would have had no rights or privileges, but the father gave him respect, dignity and honour within his home and community by restoring his status as a son. Likewise, godly fathers must not remove the status of their children based upon their behaviour. We might not approve of their behaviour, but they will always be our children and we must do everything we can to help them succeed. 7. GODLY FATHERS PROVIDE FOR THEIR CHILDREN’S NEEDS The father had already provided for the general needs of both his sons, plus an inheritance, but he also provided for their specific needs. When his youngest son returned home famished, the father provided for his obvious need of food: ‘And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry.’ Luke 15: 23. Notice that the father provided the best for his son; he didn’t settle for a scrawny calf, but provided the fatted calf to meet his sons needs and celebrate his return. Equally, as godly fathers, we must meet the specific needs of our children regardless of the mistakes they have made. GOD’S ETERNAL FATHER HEART OF LOVE The father in the parable of the lost son reveals how a godly father’s

heart responds to his children. More significantly, it also reveals how God the Father responds to us. An identical pattern is found in the account of God’s dealings with Adam and Eve, showing that God’s heart towards His children has never changed. God provided everything Adam and Eve needed, but when they chose to disobey Him and they allowed sin to enter the world, God respected their decision. God didn’t take their actions personally, but provided a short-term and long-term solution: He killed an innocent animal and used its skin to cover the shame of their nakedness and He promised to restore the position of mankind back to righteousness through Jesus Christ. Those of us who have been born again have the status of being God’s children and He provides all our needs. Hallelujah! RESPOND TO GOD’S FATHER HEART The parable of the prodigal son was a revelation of the Father heart of God to the people of Jesus’ day, and it’s a revelation of His heart towards you, too. When you make mistakes, God will respect your decisions, but He’s a loving Father who is waiting for you to return to Him. If you need to return to God, don’t delay, He’s waiting with open arms to receive you, cover your shame, restore your position and provide for you. And for every man who is a father, your heart towards your children must be like God’s heart to you. Learn from His example and show your children what a godly father is like so that they can do the same for their children. It’s up to you to set the standard so that the generations to follow can relate to their earthly father and, more importantly, their Heavenly Father.

misguided and deceptive (Jeremiah 10:23). But God’s plan and direction is perfect; that’s why He is the One who must order and direct our steps. Sometimes, we foolishly think that we know better than God does, and so we try to direct our own steps. Just like little children who run away from their parents without any regard for their own safety, we too can run off and devise our own plans without any regard for the instructions of our Heavenly Father. Often, this is because we think His plans are less attractive or less comfortable. However, we must realise that God’s plans will always be for our best. God-ordered steps are essential for us to fulfil our destiny, so let’s look at what it means to have ordered steps: 1. ORDERED STEPS ARE YIELDED

ORDERED

STEPS TEACHING BY PASTOR MICHELLE DI SOMMA

Every Christian is on a journey of faith, and every step we take on that journey will either lead us to our God-ordained destiny or away from it. King David wrote: The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. Psalm 37:23. Having our steps ordered by God means that we allow Him to fashion, prepare and establish our lives according to His plan and direction. The Bible tells us: A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. Proverbs 16:9. The ‘heart’ refers to the very centre of our being, where our intellect and emotions are based. Therefore, this scripture shows us that we are inclined to make plans based upon our thoughts or feelings. However, as humans, our thoughts and feelings are often flawed,

12

To be yielded means to give up control and present ourselves to another. The Apostle Paul explained this concept in his letter to the Roman church; he emphasised the importance of being yielded to the right source by stating that we become slaves to whatever, or to whomever, we yield ourselves. Some Christians choose to yield themselves to their own ideas and feelings, falling prey to the pressures of peers, culture and society. Eventually, this results in them being ‘slaves’ to those influences, which leads to death. But those who yield to God as His ‘slaves’, will be led into righteousness (Romans 6:16). Being yielded to God requires us to be present ourselves to Him as living sacrifices: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice. Romans 12:1. This is not meant to be a one-off event, but a daily occurrence; Paul said that he died daily to his own desires in order to live for God’s purposes (1 Corinthians 15:31). We, too, must present ourselves to God, yielded and ready to live for His purposes, not our own. 2. ORDERED STEPS REQUIRE SURRENDER Surrender means ‘to give up to another’. To be surrendered requires us to willingly give everything to God, which includes our own desires and plans. One thing that prevents us from surrendering to God is stubbornness.

Children are an apt example of stubbornness: they kick and scream when their parents attempt to direct them to do something they don’t want to do. As believers, we can be equally as stubborn, but we kick and scream in our hearts and attitudes, refusing to surrender to God and fighting against His instructions. We must stay mindful of the consequences of refusing to surrender to God. For instance, the Israelites were repeatedly stubborn and, time after time, they reaped the consequences. King Saul is another example; he lost his kingdom because of stubbornness. The prophet, Samuel, said to him, “Stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.” 1 Samuel 15:23. Iniquity means ‘sin’ and idolatry is ‘idol worship’. Therefore, when we stubbornly refuse to surrender to God, we sin by placing our own thoughts, feelings and desires on the throne of our hearts, making ourselves an idol of worship rather than surrendering to God in worship. 3. ORDERED STEPS LISTEN AND OBEY God has purposed and fashioned all the days of our lives (Psalm 139:16). Therefore, it’s vital that we listen to God’s instructions and obey them so that we can walk in the steps He has ordained. Notice that it’s a two-fold responsibility on our part: first we must listen, and then we must obey. Although God can speak to us in any way He chooses, He desires to speak to us calmly in His still small voice, like He did with Elijah (1 Kings 19:11-12). This requires us to quiet ourselves to hear Him, otherwise other noises and distractions will drown out His voice. Just like parents with their children, God wants to make sure we are paying attention and listening to His voice so that He can direct our steps. After listening and hearing God’s instructions, we must obey. Jesus said: “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” John 14:15. Often, we want to change the course of our lives, because we’re not happy with what God has planned so, even though we hear God, we disobey Him. But when we live according to our own plans, we cannot be surprised when we encounter unnecessary struggles, hardships and complications. God’s plan for us is perfect, so rather than

making decisions based upon our own preferences, we must simply hear and obey God’s voice. 4. ORDERED STEPS REQUIRE TRUST Jesus is an example of someone who allowed His steps to be ordered by God. The Gospels show us how He trusted His Father to the extent that He did only what His Father instructed Him to do and said only what His Father instructed Him to say (John 5:19). Even though He faced trials, temptations and storms, He fixed His eyes on His Father and trusted Him to protect and defend Him. God honoured Christ’s trust by strengthening and upholding Him so that He was not shaken or moved from His mandate. As a result, Jesus completely fulfilled God’s will for His life. Likewise, if our lives are truly ordered by God, everything we go through and experience is for a reason. Through the times of shaking, God will strengthen and establish us in His purpose if we trust Him: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6.

WALK WITH ORDERED STEPS To walk with steps ordered by God we must yield ourselves to God as living sacrifices, surrender our desires and plans to Him, listen for His still small voice, obey His instructions and trust Him wholeheartedly.

ordered steps require trust

By choosing your own way, you will rob yourself of the wonderful plans and purposes that God had ordained for you. God’s way may appear uncomfortable, unpopular or even oldfashioned, but realise that His plans are always for your safety and benefit. When children yield to, surrender, listen, obey and trust their parents, they find themselves in a safe place. The same applies to you when you yield and surrender to God, listen to His instructions and obey them, trusting Him to order your steps. Choose today to follow God’s path despite any discomfort or difficulty, and you will see your destiny fulfilled.

Where Have All The Miracles Gone?

TEACHING BY PASTOR SEAN LEASK

The New Testament gives us a clear picture of what the early Church was like and how the Christians lived their lives. A significant part of their faith in Jesus was the working of miracles. It was a frequent occurrence for them. Not only did they witness miracles, but they were also the vessels through which they happened. Yet, today, Christians don’t often see miracles on the same scale, if at all. Have miracles stopped happening? If they haven’t, why don’t we see them? 14

THE MIRACULOUS IS NEAR When we became Christians, we were born again by the Holy Spirit who came to dwell within us. Many of us believe this, but not everyone recognises that it’s the Holy Spirit who gives us the power to work miracles. Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead, and was Himself raised from the dead, because of the Holy Spirit within Him (Acts 10:38; Romans 8:11). Likewise, the Christians in the early Church worked miracles through the Holy Spirit who

gave them power. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit for this very purpose: “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem… and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8. Nevertheless, it’s a sad fact that Christians remain sick and broken, not experiencing God’s miraculous power in their own lives, nor seeing miracles happen in the lives of others. How can we be the witnesses that Jesus

intended if our lives don’t demonstrate His power? EXPECT MIRACLES Since we have the same Holy Spirit as Jesus and the first Christians, we can also be vessels of God’s miraculous power. If we’re not, it’s possible that we don’t expect miracles to happen. However, with the Holy Spirit in us, we can expect the unexpected and believe that the impossible can be made possible. We must have an expectation that miracles do still happen and can happen in and through our lives. Let’s study some truths that will help us increase our expectation for miracles: 1. THE HOLY SPIRIT WORKS THE MIRACLES We’ve established that miracleworking power comes from the Holy Spirit, but we must also understand that it’s the Holy Spirit who works the miracles, not us. Often, Christians don’t pray for those who need miracles because they wrongly believe that they are personally responsible for the miracle happening. We must realise that we are not the ones who work miracles; we are merely vessels the Holy Spirit uses. As such, it’s essential that we are yielded, submitted and dependent upon Him. The Apostle Paul is an example of someone who was a submitted vessel of God. He understood that it was Christ in him who worked miracles. Paul yielded his entire life to Jesus so that Christ could live through him: it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. Galatians 2:20. As a result, God used him as a vessel for miracles (Romans 15:18-19; 1 Corinthian 2:4). 2. THE MIRACULOUS COMES BY FAITH Paul questioned the Galatians Christians regarding the origin of their salvation. He asked them whether they had received the Holy Spirit by the hearing of faith or by the works of the Law. This was pertinent, because Paul knew they had been tricked into believing that salvation came by keeping the Law (Galatians 3:1-9).

Therefore, the purpose of his question was to expose their error and remind them that salvation comes by faith. This is relevant to us because the working of miracles is a free gift that comes by faith, just like salvation. Everything that accompanies salvation, including the miraculous, comes by faith. It’s a free gift. There’s nothing we can do to earn or deserve it; the miraculous is not dependent upon our abilities; it’s dependent upon the gift giver – Jesus. We must simply accept it by faith in the same way we accepted salvation. 3. THE PURPOSE OF MIRACLES The ‘working of miracles’ is one of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4–11). Yet, all nine gifts are miraculous because they are supernatural in nature. Their purpose is not so that we can feel good about receiving a prophecy or speaking in tongues, but to demonstrate Christ to those who don’t know Him so that they can be saved.

and active, watching over My word to perform it.” Jeremiah 1:12, AMP. This shows us that God’s Word always precedes miracles. God confirms His Word when preached, not our own words or hopes. Therefore, it’s essential to study His Word and let it dwell in us richly. 3. ONLY BELIEVE Jesus told a man who needed a miracle: “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Mark 9:23. On another occasion, a ruler of a synagogue asked Jesus to heal his daughter who was on the verge of death. While walking to the ruler’s house, they were notified that the girl had died. Jesus told the ruler, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” Mark 5:36. When they arrived at the ruler’s house, Jesus raised the girl from the dead. A miracle took place because the ruler simply believed. 4. ASK BOLDLY

Let’s now discover how we can become Christians through whom the miraculous power of God is demonstrated:

Jesus said: “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” John 15:7; “Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” Mark 11:24. This tells us something about asking for miracles: when we abide in Jesus by living for Him and not ourselves, when God’s Word dwells in us and when we believe His Word, we can ask boldly for miracles.

1. DIE TO SELF

BE A MIRACLE WORKER

‘Dying to self’ means dying to our own will and desires in order to live for God. It’s a decision to give ourselves to God unreservedly, allowing Him to be the master of our lives. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” Luke 9:23. Notice that it’s a daily choice of denial in order to live for Christ.

If you need a miracle or would like to witness the miraculous, you can be a vessel of God’s power. Recognise that Christ does the work, not you, and that it’s a free gift to demonstrate His love. Deny yourself daily in order to live for Him, study His Word, believe in the miraculous and ask boldly for the power of the Holy Spirit to work through you.

God wants to reach people who are lost and dying in their sin. He loves them and died for them to give them a future hope. Miracles grab the attention of unbelievers and confirm that God is real and is interested in their lives.

2. STUDY GOD’S WORD Scripture tells us that signs and wonders came after Jesus spoke the words of salvation (Hebrews 2:3). And God told Jeremiah, “I am alert

Praise God for miracles! They still happen and can happen through you! 15

The Place Called

‘There’

TEACHING BY PASTOR RUSSELL BLACKMAN Our Christian life is a journey of faith in which we move from one place to the next as God wills and leads. Sometimes, we become comfortable where we are and, therefore, we resist following God’s leading. And some Christians follow God’s direction for a while, but fail to follow Him for the entire journey. But each time we allow Him to lead us to a new location, we find ourselves in the right place at the right time: the place called, ‘there’.

16

WHERE IS ‘THERE’? ‘There’ is simply wherever God wants us to be at an appointed time for an appointed purpose. It’s not necessarily our final destination since God may have several places lined up for us along our journey. But when we align our will with His, we will move at the right time to the right place and impact the right people. God promises that if we complete the journey and go ‘there’, He will be ‘there’. We also find provision, victory and liberty ‘there’.

encounter people. God places people along our path so they can be used to provide something needful to us. Equally, they are on our path because God wants us to provide something needful to them. When Elijah met the widow, he discovered that she was depressed, hungry and had lost all hope in life. She was in need of a miracle and Elijah was the instrument whom God used to provide it.

Let’s look at the story of the prophet Elijah, which shows us the journey to the place called ‘there’:

Like Elijah, God wants to use us as instruments in the lives of people. If we hear what He has to say, we can be a blessing to people when we get to the place called ‘there’.

MOVING ‘THERE’

PROVISION ‘THERE’

Elijah was living in a country that was experiencing severe drought where people were in need of food and water. During this time, God told Elijah to leave where he was to hide by the Brook Cherith. At this place, God promised that Elijah would be fed and would have water to drink. While there, God spoke to him alone and, after a while, God told him to move to his next appointed place called Zarephath. There Elijah encountered a widow and her son who were desperately in need due to the drought. Despite this, Elijah, prompted by God, asked the widow to use the last of her supplies to make him some bread. God then provided for the widow and her son because she was obedient to the prophet’s word (1 Kings 17). THE HIDDEN PLACE On Elijah’s way from his ‘here’ to God’s ‘there, God first led him to a place where He could speak with him alone (1 Kings 17:2-4). Often on our journey, God will first take us to a place of intimacy where we are ‘hidden’ with Him. This is a place where others can’t come and where there are no distractions. It is there where God can deal with the personal issues of our hearts. It’s important for us to go to the hidden place because it is there that we are prepared and equipped for the rest of the journey. PEOPLE ‘THERE’ When we leave the hidden place and move along our journey, we will

We can safely presume that the widow at Zarephath had doubts about giving her last morsel of food to Elijah. However, because of her obedience, not only did Elijah receive the provision of food, but the widow also received provision through God’s miracle of ongoing flour and oil (1 Kings 17:13-16). As Christians, we can also fall into the trap of worrying about following God’s instructions, especially when it seems like we may lose out as a result. When times get tough, we find it very easy to give up on the things of the Spirit and cling rather to the things of the natural. However, God honours those who are willing to give to Him regardless of the natural outcome, because nothing pleases God more than faith, and God wants us to live by faith and not by sight (Hebrews 11:6; 2 Corinthians 5:7). By developing our relationship with our Father, we develop our trust and faith in Him. We can then follow His instructions to go to the place called ‘there’ with confidence knowing He will provide all our needs. PROMISE ‘THERE’ God promises that no weapon formed against us will prosper, but He doesn’t promise that the weapons won’t be formed in the first place (Isaiah 54:17). On our journey of faith, we may encounter trials and difficulties, but we mustn’t quit. We must know that when we are in right-standing with God, in fellowship and covenant with Him,

He will give us the strategy and strength to defeat those weapons. Elijah was in his placed called ‘there’, but shortly after he had been used by God to provide for the widow, her son unexpectedly died. Once again, Elijah was the instrument through which God performed a miracle. Elijah prayed for the widow’s son and he came back to life. The weapon that was formed against the widow’s son did not prosper because Elijah was positioned correctly to revive him. A promise was received that day by the widow, but Elijah also received a promise: his status as a God’s prophet was confirmed (1 Kings 17:17-24). There will always be promises waiting for us at the place where God is leading us, but they’re not necessarily always physical provisions; they will often be acknowledgments, confirmations or words from God that reassure us we are in the right place and on the right track. GETTING FROM ‘HERE’ TO ‘THERE’ When we choose to follow God’s leading, we can go from one place to the next, experiencing God’s blessings as we go. We must resist the temptation to remain where we are comfortable and choose to get going on the journey. God has already gone ‘there’ before us; all we need to do is align our will with His and join Him ‘there’. In order for us to do that, we must choose between our way and His way. We must learn that whatever our situation is, we can trust God to be constant and unchanging. He will always stand over His word to perform it (Jeremiah 1:12).

Some of you are wondering why God is not ‘here’, but it’s because you need to get to a place called ‘there’. When you get ‘there’, He is already ‘there’ to meet you ‘there’ and He will be God ‘there’. Learn to hear His voice and follow His leading. Be confident in the knowledge that God will provide for all your needs and that He will reward your faith by using you to demonstrate His power. There is so much waiting for you ‘there’! 17

Encountering God Max and Reece are two young men who attend Carmel City Church and were on this year’s youth camp. They both have a testimony of how they encountered God during the camp. Let’s find out what happened:

Max Fraser Six years ago, I was playing a game of rugby when I was tackled from the front and the back at the same time. As I fell down, I injured my knee and was in a lot of pain. I was taken to the hospital where doctors said I would need an operation. I decided against having the operation because I was concerned about the amount of time it would take for my knee to heal. I tried to get on with my life, but I had only a small amount of movement in my knee and it continued to be painful. I went on youth camp this year, but during the games and activities my knee continued to cause me pain and discomfort. During one of the evening rallies, there was a call for anyone who needed healing to go to the front of the tent and receive prayer. God used Pastor Simon to pray for me and within a matter of seconds I was healed! After six years of pain and limited movement, it was all gone! I have always believed that God can heal people, but I never thought it could happen that quickly. God is my healer and I am so thankful for what He has done. I cannot stop running and I am enjoying sport and activities again. Thank You Lord! 18

Reece Parsons This year was the first time I had been on a Carmel youth camp. I had a heart-felt expectation that I would encounter God and that He would increase my zeal and passion for the things of His Kingdom. I was also expectant for all the youth to experience an out-pouring of God’s Spirit. During the times of morning prayer, God ignited my expectancy for what He was going to do. Throughout the devotional time, and even during the games and activities, that expectancy continued to grow. God certainly did pour out His Spirit at every evening rally during the camp. We had awesome times of worship and prayer and many people experienced healing and deliverance. On a personal level, I heard God say to my spirit, “Passion for mission.” I went on a mission trip to Romania after the youth camp, and I know that God deposited something in me during this camp that I could take with me. I’m now at Carmel Bible School with a fresh passion for the things of the Kingdom, I am enjoying discovering more about God and His Word – I just can’t get enough! My advice to other youth people is this: keep your expectation of God high and He will come through for you!
