MONGOLIAN ENGLISH LESSON 35

Basic expression Let’s continue exploring some basic questions:

- Are you Karl? - чи Карл мөн үү?

- Yes, I am - Тийм, би Карл

- How are you doing today? (How did you spent today?) - өдрийг хэрхэн өнгөрөөж байна?

- Nothing interesting - сонирхолтой зүйл алга

- See you tomorrow - Маргааш уулзая

- Ok, thank you - За баярлалаа

- Goodbye - Баяртай

This give us the possibility to explore the light imperative form. In Mongolian you can form imperative in many way, but the polite form is by adding the following suffixes: -аарай (-оорой, -ээрэй, -өөрэй), for negation, битгий is used. In English we would add the “please” word, so Уншарай can be properly translated as “Please, read it”

Another expression is: шүлэг унших - that means read poems aloud.

би сонсож чадна - I can hear

би ярьж. чадна - I can speak

би уншиж чадна - I can read

би тоолж чадна - I can count

бид дуулж, бүжиглэж чадна - We can sing and dance

бид зирж, бутээж чадна - We can work and create

The main pattern here is би .. чадна -> I can , бид … чадна we can

Let’s explore the structure of words: сонсож, ярьж, уншиж, тоолж, дуулж, бүжиглэж, бутээж

These are basic words in daily life, here an example:

бутээж is from бүтээх that means to create, to build, to bring to existence, to generate plus a form of progressive present continue tense with -ж. In Mongolian we say something I can hearing, speaking, doing, creating etc etc.

хийж бүтээх - to do it, or doing it where хийж means doing from хийх pronunciation is very soft,
