POSITION DESCRIPTION Director of the Lower School The Bryn Mawr School Baltimore, MD Located in Baltimore, Maryland, The Bryn Mawr School is a private all-girls K-12 day school with a coed preschool for ages 2 months through 5 years. Bryn Mawr provides students with exceptional educational opportunities on a beautiful 30-acre campus within the city limits. Inquisitive girls, excellent teaching, strong student-teacher relationships and a clear mission sustain our vibrant school community where girls always come first. Steeped in a tradition of excellence in academic preparation, the arts, physical development, strong values and a powerful sense of community, the Lower School is a joyous setting for K-5 girls and teachers. Focusing on how girls learn and thrive in a contemporary setting, the Lower School provides an exceptional foundation for Bryn Mawr girls. Our students are bright, curious, bold and creative. We seek an outstanding Lower School educator to lead this distinctive division of a wider, historically important girls’ school. The Director of the Lower School is responsible for leading not only the day-to-day operations of this 200+ student division, but also to lead the division in implementing Bryn Mawr’s new strategic plan and developing the future vision for the division. Housed in a recently renovated cluster of buildings originally designed by noted architect Marcel Breuer, the Lower School provides wonderful teaching and learning facilities including a building designed exclusively for Lower School science, beautifully renovated art and music classrooms, an innovation lab, and new playground equipment. The Lower School Director reports to the Headmistress and the Dean of Faculty. He/she is a member of the Administrative Group, the Division Directors, and the Program Group as well as any additional assignments from the Headmistress or the Dean of Faculty. This is a twelve-month administrative appointment and begins on or about July 1, 2017. Essential responsibilities include: • • •

Supervise and direct all day-to-day operations of the division Build and monitor the Lower School academic schedule, daily schedule, and annual calendar Oversee the further development and further enhancement of the Lower School program: the academic program; opportunities in the arts, athletics, and activities; extended day and after school programming; learning activities to address our students’ social, emotional and physical development

Assist the Headmistress and Dean of Faculty on overall school life Participate with the dean of faculty on personnel matters including hiring, supervising, professionally developing, retaining and, when necessary, terminating Lower School faculty and staff Evaluate and help select new students Meet regularly with faculty teams to monitor and report on student progress Work with the Parents’ Association to support Lower School activities and events Engage and communicate regularly and enthusiastically about the Lower School with students, faculty and parents Supervise the Assistant Director of the Lower School and Lower School office assistant
