Position General Description The Assistant Head of Academics promotes the culture and academic excellence at Brownell Talbot School and ensures that the academic goals and objectives set forth in the school’s strategic plan are met. The Assistant Head of Academics supervises all aspects of the academic program, including curriculum, instruction, assessment and teacher evaluation. The Assistant Head of Academics is the primary point of contact for students and families in the Lower School and directly supervises the teachers within that division. The Assistant Head of Academics reports directly to the Head of School, supervises and collaborates significantly with the deans and serves as an active member of the school’s leadership team. The Assistant Head of Academics/LS Head is a year-round administrative position. The Assistant Head of Academics/LS Head :  Oversees the academic program (PK-12), including curriculum content, concepts, skills, scope and sequence, and vertical alignment in coordination with the academic leadership team, department chairs and others as appropriate.  With the Head of School, designs, implements, and refines a system for assessing student learning, using the latest academic research and scholarly inquiry.  Manages budgets that relate to the academic program.  Oversees the selection of curricular materials, including academic programs, books, software, teaching tools and other items necessary for the achievement of the school’s academic, social and emotional goals and objectives.  Along with the department chairs and deans, implements and refines faculty evaluation, coaching and supervision.  Develops a strategy for the professional development of the teaching staff that addresses academic goals and objectives; works with academic and specialist faculty members to craft personalized professional development plans.  Directly supervises the lower school faculty.


 

With the deans and department chairs, leads the development and implementation of the annual academic calendar, daily school schedule, and policies/procedures for parents and students. Participates in conferences and community outreach to help establish Brownell Talbot School as a community leader and stay current with relevant educational developments. Performs other duties as assigned by Head of School.

Desired Skills & Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess:  Master’s degree from an accredited university or equivalent educational and/or work experience.  Curriculum leadership and administrative experience required.  Strong record of classroom teaching experience (minimum of 5 years)  Understanding of the developmental and educational needs of children across the span of grades PK-12.  Proven ability to design, implement and manage academic curriculum to enhance student learning.  Deep understanding of independent school management, particularly in the area of instructional practices, culture and school operations.  Strong leadership abilities, including mentoring and coaching, team building, leadership development, goal setting, conflict management and managing change.  A sense of humor, strong sense of self, empathy, flexibility, and integrity  A visionary with demonstrated skill and experience in managing school change.
