ASSISTANT HEAD FOR STUDENT LIFE EPISCOPAL HIGH SCHOOL - ALEXANDRIA, VA OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT Overview: Episcopal High School seeks an Assistant Head for Student Life to begin July 1, 2017. Founded as the first high school in the state of Virginia in 1839, Episcopal High School is an independent, coed, college-preparatory boarding school that values academic excellence, honor, service, and transformational adult-student relationships. With the arrival of a new Head of School in July 2016 and the need to develop a new strategic plan, Episcopal is taking a close and careful look at how best to prepare its students for lives of leadership and service in a shrinking global community; to maximize the impact of the strong relationships developed on campus, throughout Washington, and around the world; and to offer its students a boarding school experience second to none. Responsibilities: This 12-month position reports to the Head of School and works closely with the Assistant Head for Academics to support the faculty, staff, and students in all areas of school life. As a member of the School’s leadership team, the Assistant Head for Student Life works collaboratively with other senior administrators to identify the School’s strategic priorities and address operational matters. The Assistant Head for Student Life supports the efforts of the Dean of Students, the Director of Residential Life, the Athletic Directors, the Coordinator of Leadership and Ethics, the Head
Chaplain, the Medical Director, and the Director of Counseling to set strategic directions and pursue the very best approaches in areas such as leadership development, residential life, athletics, health and wellness, spiritual life, and student discipline. The Assistant Head for Student Life works with the Assistant Head for Academics to oversee and support the efforts of the School’s Directors of Equity and Inclusion to enhance the close and inclusive nature of the school community. Both Assistant Heads also oversee the work of the Director of Student Activities and Summer Programs. In addition to these administrative responsibilities, the Assistant Head for Student Life will teach a class and serve on one of the residential life duty teams. Key Attributes: The successful candidate will have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, a high level of energy, a collaborative spirit, a passion for working with adolescents, and a curiosity about how best to prepare young people for lives of leadership and service at a global level. The candidate should also have experience developing and implementing in a team setting a creative and strategic vision for school programming. A minimum of ten years of professional experience as an administrator, teacher, and/or coach is required. Significant experience in an independent boarding school setting is preferred.
