Director of Enrollment Management The Director of Enrollment Management reports directly to the Head of School and serves as a member of the leadership team and also the advisory council to the head. This position manages all aspects of enrollment management for four school divisions, attracting and retaining enrollment for 900 students, and generating more than $17 million in tuition revenue annually. The Director serves on the Finance committee and the Admissions, Marketing, Financial Aid committees of the Board of Trustees, and serves as the chief spokesperson for the department. The Director oversees all admissions, financial aid and long-term enrollment planning and must have strong financial acumen to fully understand the impact of the decisions being made. The ideal candidate will understand and be able to convey the many benefits of the Hathaway Brown School experience, and be familiar with the competitive independent school market in the region. The candidate also should have broad experience in schools, including classroom and administration experience, and will be a proponent of girls’ schools. The position is open as the incumbent, a 17year administrator at HB, has accepted the head of school position at Old Trail School in Bath, OH. This position begins July 1, 2017. Main Responsibilities Serve as the chief spokesperson for the school during the admissions process. Understand the unique history, traditions, offerings, and culture of Hathaway Brown School. Advocate for qualified prospective students, and clearly articulate to families the advantages and opportunities and advantages inherent in the Hathaway Brown experience. Track enrollment management best practices and benchmarks locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. Be flexible and creative in outlining strategy. Oversee and set enrollment goals using an approach that accounts for the specific needs of the Cleveland-area market, all four school divisions, and takes marketing research—in schools and otherwise—into consideration. Critically analyze application data and form relationships with prospective students, identifying strengths, opportunities for improvement, and capacity for growth. In close collaboration with the communications team, assist in developing a marketing strategy that considers demographics research, market drivers, enrollment trends, and the
unique needs of all four divisions of the school. Marketing includes internal and external brand messaging, as retention efforts are as critical as recruitment. Communicate clearly and regularly, keeping management and team informed of all relevant information. All management responsibility of the Admissions Office, including supervising a team of three admissions directors, an assistant director of financial aid/database coordinator and an admission assistant. Assist and counsel admissions directors in meeting the goals of the enrollment strategic plan, implementing marketing tools, and working closely with prospective families during the school search in a highly competitive market. Responsible for the annual distribution of more than $5.5 million in financial aid and merit assistance. Work closely with the assistant director of financial aid to evaluate more than 300 applications for aid each year. Collaborate with the head of school, business office director, and board of trustees to create a long-term strategy for the increased demand of need-based aid and merit assistance. Allocate aid in a manner that is in line with the school’s values and mission, and maintain the integrity of the award process and strategic guidelines. Build strong relationships with faculty, staff, and coaches within the school and assist them in articulating the school’s message. As an all-school administrator, build and maintain a strong presence in the Early Childhood, Primary School, Middle School, and Upper School divisions.
Skills and Qualifications Master’s Degree (preferred) in a related field that supports the duties and responsibilities of this position. Bachelor’s degree required. Understand the history and culture of Hathaway Brown and be familiar with the people and programs in order to tell true and compelling stories in the admissions process. Experience in budget allocation and making informed financial aid decisions. Specialization in admissions and understanding of the key elements in successful recruiting. Ability to recognize and express the long-term benefits of all-girls education and the distinctive value of Hathaway Brown School. In a challenging and shrinking market, prior experience with proven results to successfully meet set admissions goals is a must. Successful use of resources including ability to network with feeder schools. A passion and understanding for independent schools, with prior experience in enrollment/admissions. Prior classroom and broad school community-wide experience is essential. Girls’ school experience a plus. 3-5 years of organizational, management, administrative, and public speaking experience. Excellent computer skills, with a statistical mindset and capacity for deep analysis and data collection and synthesis.
Genuine sense of humor and interest in all aspects of school life. Ability to thrive in a highly competitive market environment through creative and innovative strategies. Collaborative point of view; able to warmly and enthusiastically partner with prospective students and parents during the admissions process.
