Trinity School is a college preparatory, coeducational independent day school for Grades K-12, located on the Upper West Side of New York City. Founded as a charity school at Trinity Church in 1709 for 40 students, it moved to its current location in 1895 and now has an average enrollment of 960. Trinity is no longer sponsored by a specific religious body, and the Trinity community is characterized by religious, racial, and ethnic diversity. The ratio of students to teachers is six to one. The faculty members of the school, with over 20 doctorates and 96 master’s degrees from selective colleges and universities around the world, are extraordinarily talented and dedicated individuals. Trinity School, a coeducational K-12 institution located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, seeks a Math Department Head, beginning September 2017. In brief, the Math Department Head is responsible for (1) direct oversight of math department curriculum and instruction, grades 512, ensuring appropriate coherence, continuity, consistency and quality; (2) appropriate coordination between the math department curriculum in grades 5-12 and Lower School math curricula; (4) oversight of math department members’ professional growth, including routine review of math department members’ professional growth and performance; (5) collaboration with division heads, Assistant Head, and Head of School in hiring and mentoring new math teachers; and (6) supervision of departmental staffing and scheduling, budget, book orders, substitute teaching arrangements, and other departmental policies and procedures. While the math department head routinely works with all three division heads as well as the Head of School, the math department head is supervised by the Associate Head. The next Math Department Head will be focusing sustained attention on consolidating recent improvements in the Upper School integrated math curriculum focused on problem-centered learning. In addition, the Math Department Head will work with other department heads to develop and implement K-12 curricular review processes focused on mission, meaning, and coherence. The ideal candidate is an exceptional math teacher and mathematician whose education and experience have brought wisdom and vision about curriculum as well as pedagogy in both Middle and Upper Schools; a versatile leader eager to foster collegiality within the department as it revises its program; a skilled administrator with experience in hiring and evaluation, sensitive to the needs of the department and its members as well as the needs of the School; an effective communicator able to articulate departmental policies, practices, and decisions well to students and parents; an approachable colleague who possesses intellectual curiosity, an openness to others’ ideas, an eagerness to extend oneself for others, and a sense of humor.
