A
s we enter into the holidays season we ask that you take a minute to give thanks for your many blessings. If you’re reading this in English thank a teacher, if you’re reading this in America thank a soldier. Living in Columbia and near Ft. Jackson I see soldiers every day. My motorcycle is older than most of these men & women. Yet I’m free to ride because of them, I am very grateful to each and every sacrifice made by soldiers past & present. Often forgotten are the military families who’s loved ones are deployed during Christmas and the sacrifices they make. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the commercialization of it all. For a reality check read Preacher Cotton’s message on the Get Right With The Man page!

History Truths WAR BETWEEN THE STATES Keep The Skeer On’em’ General Nathan Bedford Forrest At the battle of Brice’s Crossroads, Mississippi, on June 10, 1864, Forrest gave the Union Cavalry commander General Samuel Sturgis one of the classic beatings of the Civil War. With 3300 dismounteod troopers Forrest threw back Sturgis 8,000 man force in overwhelming and smashing defeat. The morning after the battle and as the rout of the Unin forces continued, Forrest said to his artillery commander, Captain John Morton, ‘the way to whip an enemy is to “git ‘em skeered, and then keep the skeer on’em.”

4th Annual Seniors Need Santa, Too Presented by Your Extended Biker Family – Rock Hill
Another glorious day as we entertained 75+ Seniors (the most seniors YET!) for a Christmas Party, that in these parts has become a tradition for many Seniors, as well as, the Extended Biker Family! A chilly 50 or so degrees a beautiful sun shining above started our ride. Santa Larry and Granny Claus lead the way with a group of 30+ motorcycles to RH National Guard Armory home of OUR 178th EN BN/TF Prowlers Soldiers –serving in Afghanistan for at least another 6 months. THANK YOU to our 178th Heroes for our Freedom and your service! As Santa/Granny Claus round the corner the seniors are outside whooping and a-hollering and clapping for our EBF. What a sight to see…. fruit bags, gift cards, gift bags loaded to the rims, homemade goodies - made with love from our Biker Family along with Pics on Santa’s lap. LOTS of hugs and kisses and good Biker family fellowship. HARLEY-DAVIDSON® & DAV HELP WOUNDED VETERANS For the 4th straight year, H-D continues its tradition of honoring United States military veterans throughout the month of November, this year by raising awareness of DAV and the Harley’s Heroes program through a national video campaign spotlighting two veterans who have benefitted from the program. Troy Torgerson of Wausau, Wis. and Nick Bernardi of Newark, N.J., both served in Iraq and sought help from the DAV upon their return home. Harley’s Heroes brings DAV mobile service offices (MSOs) to H-D dealerships throughout the country on more than 200 days out of the year, bringing services directly to where veterans live. Reporting & photos by Rush L. Workman That was the theme of this year’s Newberry Hejaz Shrine Club motorcycle poker run for the Shriner Hospitals For Children (www.shrinerhospitalforchildren.org). I recently read that South Carolina was one of the 7 most generous states when it came to charitable giving, (the least were all north of the Mason-Dixon Line) and the sharing sure was evident on Saturday August, 18. Newberry Hejaz Club President, Olin Glimp, said, “Over 100 Carolina motorcycles with 75 “passengers” took part in the event and raised nearly $8,000 for the Hospitals.” The official beginning of the event was at the Newberry Hejaz Shrine Club where for a mere $8 you got a delicious all you could eat breakfast provided by the area Waffle House restaurants. The area manager rounds up volunteers to help cook. Her son was a recipient of Shriner Hospital burn treatment at 4 yr old. Cheryl says, “It is my way of thanking the Shriner members for all they did for my son Bryan.” And with a short pause she told me. “He is in the kitchen cooking eggs.” “Well,” I said, “How about an introduction?” Bryan Young, who recently relocated with his family from snowy Buffalo, NY, now 28, married with 3 young children. This very likable young man who was eager to show me the remnants of the scars on his legs and feet to illustrate what a wonderful job they did for him at the Shriner Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio where he got almost 4 years of free care. Bryan said, “Now that I am here in South Carolina I can help my mom carry on the tradition of saying thank you.” High Priest and Prophet Billy Ackerman jumped in to say, “This is what the Shriners do, give second chances to crippled and burned children, and they do it all for free. Bryan is an excellent example of what can happen.” Meanwhile, out on the road the motorcyclist, where participating in the approximately 75 mile loop with the final destination being the Hejaz Clubhouse. Weary riders were greeted with live music, along with plenty of hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks of all kinds, and other treats that were on sale to help raise more cash for the hospitals. You should plan on being part of this event next summer.

Honda Goldwing F6B & CB1100 Retro Well readers I’m back with another bike review, well sort of. The bikes I went looking for are two new models of Honda motorcycles. Unfortunately they will not be available until later this year or 2013 depending on dealership orders and how soon they can get them in. So keep an eye out for the ride review in a future issue of Carolina Chrome. For now I will give you my take on what I think will be the hottest selling Hondas since the Fury. For a while now there hasn’t been too much to report on the metric side of things. When the economy tanked new models seemed to dry up and for a couple years, with few exceptions all we have seen is a rehash of the current models. However, this coming year Honda has 5 new models in the pipeline, two of which caught my eye immediately, the Goldwing F6B, and CB1000 Retro model. Did I say Goldwing, yes I did. Modern Goldwing’s have not ever been what I looked for in a motorcycle and I have avoided our editor’s attempts to get me to review one for two reasons. First, I’ve heard how great they ride and if they were that good I don’t want that riding experience in the back of my head every time I purchased a new bike. Second, I’ve always put bikes in 3 categories, Harleys, Metrics, and Goldwing’s. The latter in my view was always a “two wheeled touring machine” not really a motorcycle. The Goldwing to me is like the Kyle Bush of motorcycles, that is to say, I respect its capabilities but I have never been a fan.
Until now. The GWF6B is leaner, meaner, lighter, and faster than its predecessor. One look at the photos and you can see the difference. Its cut down styling is now something I wouldn’t be embarrassed to be on. This lighter model is still pushed along with same 1800 cc 6cyl engine! At the time this is being written, the new model is already generating a waiting list at most dealerships. The GWF6B is one that I will ride and review for Carolina Chrome ASAP. Before I even turn the key, my riding experience tells me with
the low position of the motor and the reduction in top end weight, the handling of this bike will likely be awesome to say the least, so be on the lookout for my review on the GWF6B in a future issue of Carolina Chrome. CB1100 Retro HEY OLD SCHOOL GUYS…. Remember that metric you learned on? After all, most of us cut our teeth on a metric of some kind. For a many of us, it was the venerable CB line from Honda. of it, as there were so many different ones over the years, it’s hard to remember them all. In addition to all those there were the Suzuki and Kawasaki clones of the original bike that changed the market, the 1969 CB 750. Many old school guys look back at that first bike with a nostalgic fondness and think it would be great to own one again. Those old models with the gleaming chrome fenders and tacky 70s metal flake pain job were a source of pride for many first time riders. Well, its back, as the CB1100, right down to the chrome fenders and square gas tank. This time it’s equipped with modern suspension and breaks. The CB1000 it still retains the old school air/oil cooled in line 4cyl. motor but now it’s pushing 1100cc. These modern upgrades with old school looks are going to make this one a hot seller giving many of us the chance to revisit that old school metric. Maybe not to replace our current ride, but as a second ride to use as a solo get-away bike, providing a time machine escape from the crowds and rallies as a way to experience your first bike – again-. When someone comes up to ya during CHRISTmas and says Happy Holidays, tell em no man it’s still Merry CHRISTmas, if they are offended by it they are probably out of place any way. All though we have not stood up when we should, like it or not this is a CHRISTian nation. this all year round we just treat it differently because it’s a Holiday. Everyday should be treated as it is a Holiday we have been given the greatest gift of all man. Just wished folks would remember and consider the reason for Christmas and stop In The Wind With Christ, taking it as just another Rev. Cotton Pate holiday, Folks this is Chrome Crew Jesus’ birthday. Why is it that we can celebrate [803] 475-9165 everyone’s birthday and go to great links to do so, Oh man we will go all out, and we look over the most important Birthday of all. Yes we decorate and do all we can to show the love to each other, but what are we doing to show our love to Jesus this time of the year. This is serious folks most of us was taught what CHRISTmas is really all about and we are sitting back letting folks take it away cause it offends them, we don’t want to hurt no one. Well I just wonder what and how Jesus feels when we do this, take a stand folks stand up for Jesus. Man we will all get excited and stand up for the helmet law here in our state(and NO I don’t wear one) and I think this is great I have been to the rallies in front of the state house and protested it more than once, am simply saying why don’t we come together for other thing we believe in. Most of ya are probably right around my age, man you remember praying and saying the Pledge of Allegiance, and if ya spent as much
time as I have in a court room you remember the ten commandments hanging in the court house and we have let all this be taken away. Folks when someone says anything to you this CHRISTmas other than Merry CHRISTmas stand up let em know just how ya feel about it, take time and share with them what it really means. Even though it’s been four years since its last overhaul, the 2012 Suzuki Hayabusa still garners instant street creditability in the South. With its impressive acceleration numbers, easy handling, not to mention the plentitude of accessories and aftermarket hop-up parts available, you simply can’t go wrong with the Hayabusa. Slide into the big, cozy saddle and it’s apparent how large of a motorcycle it is. From the width of the instrument display to the bubbly shape of the fuel tank and tail section; all of its proportions are more
oversized than other sportbikes (with exception of the Ninja ZX-14R). This means it’s a more comfortable mount for taller riders, especially those who stand over six-feet. Stock, its pushing out 179 Horsepower at 9600rpm. Its no ZX-14 but its right there. I am very impressed with the new color schemes as well.

I don’t get paid to ride my motorcycle, so like most folks, I also have a day job, gotta keep gas in the scoot. After chatting with RubyRed one afternoon and sharing a little about my work (w/Columbia Animal Shelter), she asked if I would put together a few quick tips, facts, etc. for each issue about the world of animal care and control and caring for our pets. So, here we go..#14
JuneBug (CRMC) & Sir Winston (TMC hang-around) . We are in the middle of the holiday season so the battle has already begun. How to prevent gaining weight with all the great food (and lots of it) we are likely to encounter. Not to mention a cocktail or two. One answer…get a pet. Study after study has shown that people who own a pet, particularly a dog, are more likely to get out and exercise on a regular basis. Whether it’s going for a walk or just playing with your pet. Even folks who didn’t exercise before, exercise a good deal more when they get a pet. Exercise is not the only benefit. It has been shown that pets also help lower stress, levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.
People with pets also have lower heart rates and blood pressure. Believe it or not, pets have been shown to regulate a person’s blood pressure better than medications. It has been found that people who suffered from serious heart attacks were more likely to recover if they had a pet waiting for them at home. This is true with other serious illnesses or injuries. Other studies have shown that children who grow up with pets are less likely to have allergies, hay fever or asthma. They also have stronger immune systems. Not only that, children with pets are likely to have more self confidence, understand verbal and non-verbal communication easier, and cope better with family issues and social settings. They also deal with stress better if they grow up with pets. Pets are great in so many ways. They also offer us unconditional love. Who couldn’t use some of that? They offer companionship, are great snugglers, can enjoy comfortable silences and can keep secrets when you need someone to talk

to. Pets are also wonderful for beating loneliness. It’s one of the reasons they are so great in visiting nursing homes. Because of pets’ playful nature, pet owners are less likely to suffer from depression and anxiety. They remind us not to take things too seriously. In short, pets are simply pretty awesome. They help us physically, mentally and emotionally. And they are great conversation pieces. Seriously, who out there hasn’t had at least one conversation about your own or somebody else’s pet? Going back to the holiday season, don’t forget that a pet can also make a wonderful gift for yourself of someone you care about. Just make sure it’s the right pet for you or them. Then get out there and walk and enjoy life with your pet. If you don’t want or can’t have a pet of your own right now, visit your local shelter and spend time with some of those pets while they are waiting for their new home. It will do you both good. My name is Robert Reeves, and I am a practicing trial attorney with over 23 years experience. My goal is to try and answer your questions and concerns in various areas of the law.
How to Avoid Getting Hurt If You’re Injured on the Job Getting hurt at work can be complicated. There are certain things you have to do to protect yourself. In serious cases, where the injury is immediate, an adjuster is assigned, and benefits usually start without much delay. However, in heavy physical jobs, you must make a distinction between sore muscles and a real injury that should be reported. People who work hard jobs say they cannot report an injury every time they feel a pain or go home sore. They would be reporting something almost every day. However, it is critical that you notify your employer of any incident where you feel a “pop” or a “shooting pain” that goes down your arm or leg. Lifting injuries are common, and the true extent of injury may not be readily apparent. People often try to play down their symptoms or say they can “work through” their pain. This approach can hurt you later if the symptoms remain or get worse. In these cases, you should get checked out, even if you go on your own to an urgent care center. Be sure to go the same day or the next day and fully describe what Page 42
happened and where you hurt. If the pain does go away, that’s great. But if it does not resolve, you are better protected if you later have to file for workers’ compensation benefits. There are two (2) deadlines in workers’ compensation cases. Almost everyone knows that you have two (2) years to file a claim. However, the first deadline is that you have ninety (90) days to report an accident to your employer. If you miss that date, your claim can still be barred, despite the two years statute of limitations (SOL). It is best to report as soon as possible and eliminate the risk. The next question is “do I really need a lawyer to represent me?” It depends. If your injury is minor (a strain or small cut), then no, you do not. These types of injuries usually heal completely, and there are no benefits due other than medical treatment. On the other hand, if your injury is more serious (requiring surgery, broken bones), then you should consider hiring experienced counsel. Beware though. Seemingly, every lawyer on the planet wants to “help the injured.” Before hiring any attorney, make sure they actually have real experience in handling workers’ compensation cases. As for me, I have practiced workers’ compensation law in South Carolina for over 23 years. I am a former insurance defense lawyer and a former Registered Nurse (RN). CODE OF THE ROAD After a day of riding to Greenville Harley Davidson’s “Military Appreciation Day,” we found ourselves rolling down Hwy. 417 without any throttle.... interesting. It’s 4:30 in the afternoon and the shops are closing. Thank goodness for 10 mph over rule or I would’ve been parked in an animal hospital paring lot. Luckily I was able to coast to a favorite watering hole and put out a quick 911 call to 4 brothers! Now for a few cold beers and a little tunes. Within 5 mins and half a song by Robin Trower my phone started blowing up. The first being John, owner of John Hicks Customs out of Grrrrrreeeeerrrrrrr as they pronounce it. Said give him a few mins. and he was on his way. Quick call to Greenville H-D with year and make and both throttle cables in my hand. Check and back to a little Eric Johnson on the juke box. This is not going to ruin my veterans day weekend. A few beers later and a bowl of low country boil, I was ‘bout feelin right, hanging out on the back porch, when in the distance I could hear a faint rumble rollin my way. Up comes the purdiest site 4 brothers rolling hot and heavy, they rolled in and wouldn’t let me do a thing but live it down. Kinda reminds me

of a few years ago when I was a lot younger and had a quicker step to my strut, I hung around a bunch of fine brothers. We trained hard, fought hard and played even harder. I had the privilege of serving in two branches of the military, Navy and Army (funny story of my dad taking me drinking and signing paperwork). But I had the privilege of training and serving with the most outstanding brothers and sisters in this God created world I’m tell’in ya. And as I reflect, my weekend was not ruined but reminded me of the brothers and sisters that have not and will not be coming back. And that if we have one anothers back this country can still be the greatest society in the history of the world. So hears to my veterans of past, present, and future; and to the brothers and sisters I meet everyday on the road. Always remember the biker code! Never leave a brother behind. Thanks John for reminding me what this weekend was about. If your in a fix in the GRRRRREEEEERRRRR area, John’s in the C.C.M. look him up!!!! Yes you are reading it right. Off the Rail in Columbia held its 1st annual event. Fried turkey balls... The many who ate them said they ‘taste like liver’, well in that case why not just eat liver?!? Still just when I thought I had seen it all, this I had to see not to mention the T was a must have. Jim and the Off The Rail staff always welcome bikers, its just a cool neighborhood place in NE Columbia on Two Notch Rd.; just a few miles from home is an extra plus. The party was in full swing when we arrived, pans & pans of fried balls, many sides, and Tarzan’s pulled pork BBQ spread out, all you could eat. A contest for the one who could stuff the most balls in their mouth was held, at which time I headed for the large back deck and the live music of ‘Write Off 20”, local SC southern rock & rollers. Followed by ‘Nikki Blooze & the Formerly Unknown Band”. If you have the chance make a point to go hear this girl sing, you will thank me later! BIG SHOUT OUT to the Columbia BON ladies, thanks for the autographed calendar. Stop in Off the Rail and have a cold one or one of their many famous ‘shots’. Beware the parking lot takes a little navigating on 2 wheels, but the friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere makes up for it. Grab a CHROME while there!

Dear Dr. Dillagaf, I need help PLEASE. I’ve been dating the most fantastic man. He has a motorcycle. I fell for him hard right from the start. He has asked me to move in and said he’s never loved anything except his motorcycle until he met me. Here’s the predicament, I am scared to death of motorcycles. He’s a safe and sound driver, I am just afraid of motorcycles. Is there a class I can take or reading material I can purchase to help be overcome my fears? Willa Keys ~ N. Augusta, SC Dear Willa, If your new man loves you as much as his motorcycle then I’m sure you will be polished, well ridden, and properly lubricated. Speaking of lubrication, the only class I can think of that you need to take is taught nightly at your local biker bar, Tequila shots 101. As far as reading material is concerned I would borrow a couple of his biker magazines and get yourself acquainted with the lifestyle, by the time class and theory are over you should be ready for you first fear free ride behind the man you love and trust so much. If that doesn’t work, GO BACK TO CLASS. Dear Doc, Couple of months ago I read your letter from the Yankee who’s new girlfriend wanted him to ride a sporty with pink feathers. That was funny up until I found myself in a similar situation. I ride an old Harley and my new lady recently upgraded from a Sporty to a 2013 Road Glide. Preparing myself for all the smack I’m going to hear when we pull up together. Can’t afford a new one myself. Oh well. Look at it this way, from now on when you have to do roadside mechanics you will have someone to fetch the beer. Dear Doctor, My husband of 60+ years passed away a few years ago. He was a proud American Veteran. I have been to his grave site for motorcycle riders to come with wreaths and flags for the Vets. It is a wonderful feeling when all of those motorcycles come riding in. It makes me tear up with pride and gives me cold chills. I do not know who organizes this but I would in some way like to say thank you to each and every one of them. It means so much you will never know. With several small children the call went out to the motorcycle community to help with sizes for the kids. Within a day or 2 the children were clothed and furniture was being donated, house wares not from one town but from all over the state of South Carolina. Amazing. If it’s too cold to ride in chaps and a jacket for you then maybe you should borrow your moms car. All kidding aside, if your bundled up too tight to walk then you’re too stiff to be safe on a bike.
