About the Carolina Show Ski Team for being with the Carolina Show Ski Team during our waterski performance today. We hope you enjoyed the show! Our team is passionate about entertaining audiences and creating a positive environment where kids and families can grow and be inspired. We do this all through show skiing. For more than 27 years, we have been bringing people together from both North and South Carolina who help our team practice, perform weekly ski shows, compete in show ski competitions, and give back to the community. Among our most popular community events are our annual Learn to Ski Clinics.

Our success depends on the generosity of others: our volunteers, our awesome sponsors, our supportive community, and the kind donations from our audiences. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, 100% of all donations go directly to support the team. We use these funds to buy safety equipment; purchase supplies to make our own skis, ropes, and costumes; or sponsor a child for a ski clinic. We extend our gratitude to everyone who helps make our show possible. YOU are our superheroes! If you love what you see and would like to join or support our Carolina Show Ski Team family, please talk to us after the show. You can also email membership@ carolinashowski. org or check out carolinashowski. org/join for more information.

Show Act Definitions Around the Boat also known as a Boat-O or by the abbreviation ATB, a skier on a single slalom ski cuts hard in one direction while the boat angles the opposite direction. In practiced choreography with the skier, the boat cuts back the other direction to pass under the skier’s rope. The skier continues their cut to keep the rope tight and complete their 360˚ journey around the boat. This act multiplies in difficulty by adding additional skiers at staggered rope lengths.
AROUND THE BOAT
Ballet
an all-female
BALLET
act, water ski ballet features several ladies performing
graceful choreographed arm and leg movements. These women circle the show course several times on just one foot, holding the rope in their hands, between their legs (seat hold), with their feet (toe hold), or with their calves (heel hold). The ballet act is typically bookended with dock and stage dances by the ladies for maximum crowd appeal.
Barefoot while barefooting, skiers skip along the water in excess of 40mph exactly as it sounds: on their bare feet with no skis at all. Barefoot ropes tend to be longer than in other acts usually 100 feet from the back of the boat - since the boat’s rooster tail lands further behind the boat at higher speeds. Also due to the high speeds, you’ll see these skiers in wetsuits specifically designed with extra floatation and padding especially placed for the sport.
BAREFOOT
Barefoot Line we see how many barefoot water skiers we can put behind the boat for one 43+ mph pull through the show course. Barefoot line is more challenging than barefooting by oneself because each skier must keep their distance from those around them. If another skier falls, the remaining barefooters must also avoid the abandoned rope handle now jumping past their bare feet.
BAREFOOT LINE

Tandem Barefoot also known as the Back Breaker, you’ll see one barefooter attached to the boat with a regular ski rope, but that front skier will also be wearing a waist harness. A second barefoot rope is connected to the back of the front skier’s harness, and a second footer is pulled behind the first.
Barefoot Flyer the boat pulls away while skiers are left standing on (or above) the dock. As the ropes get tight, watch these barefooters jump and fly in a plank position right onto
BAREFOOT FLYER
the water! They crash on their backs and bounce back to their feet before cruising through the show course.
Barefoot Circle
BAREFOOT CIRCLE
a barefooter lies on the beach with the rope handle at his hips and the rope passing through his feet on the way to the boat. As the boat takes off, he’ll slide off the sand and onto the water, standing straight to his bare feet once the boat is to speed. As the boat sets into its circle pattern, the skier’s speeds can exceed 60 mph as they’re whipped to the outside of the wake. You’ll see our biggest adrenaline junkies performing this act!
Barefoot Bomb-Out the skier keeps both of his drop skis on his feet until he’s
BAREFOOT BOMB-OUT
ready to Bomb-Out. Once the boat is up to speed, he’ll kick out of both skis simultaneously, leaving them behind on the water, then land on only his feet to barefoot ski away. There is very little room for error in this act, so the high-speed falls can be pretty spectacular as well.
Barefoot Pyramid just like it sounds, this act features two base barefooters with a barefoot climber standing on their shoulders creating a pyramid shape. Due to the extra weight on the bases’ feet, the boat needs to pull this act even faster than a regular barefoot act; they’re skipping along the water at 50 mph!
Backwards Barefoot sometimes it’s just more fun to look at the trees than to stare at the back of the boat. In this act, the skier is on his bare feet skiing backwards. This requires great deal of trust between skier and driver since the footer cannot see where he’s going. Watch out for big waves!
BACKWARDS BAREFOOT
Doubles doubles features a male base skier and a female riding handsfree on his shoulders. You may see two variations of doubles. In Conventional Doubles, the base skiers hold a traditional ski handle while the riders perform choreographed poses through the show course. In Adagio Doubles, the base skier is tethered to the boat by a waist strap, freeing both of his hands to
CONVENTIONAL DOUBLES
assist his rider with more complicated maneuvers.
ADAGIO DOUBLES
FLAG LINE
Flag Line typically an act performed early in one’s show skiing career, each skier must ski a circle around the show course carrying a large pole with a large flag flapping in the wind. Some skiers like to tether the base of the flagpole to their ankle with a rubber strap. To make this act even more challenging, we often use staggered rope lengths, causing each skier to leave the dock a few seconds before or after the skier on either side of them.
Freestyle Jumping while water ski jumping happens in a variety of subtypes throughout the sport, freestyle jumping is typically only enjoyed in show skiing. Freestyle jumpers typically use shorter skis than other jumpers so they can more easily manipulate the large, flat skis to perform tricks while in the air. Common stunts include the heli (360˚ spin), front flip, gainer (back flip), and möbius (360˚ twisting back flip).
FREESTYLE JUMPING
Hydrofoil also known by the brand names Sky Ski or Air Chair, hydrofoiling features a skier belted into a seat with his feet strapped into the front of the wide ski. These specialty skis have a 4-foot fin extending into the water. There are wing fins attached to the long fin that the skier controls by leaning forward and back in the chair. You’ll see these riders popping the hydrofoil out of the water for spectacular aerial tricks.

Pyramids unique to the show skiing discipline, we build human pyramids by having a row of bases riding sturdily on show boards – wide water skis for extra buoyancy – while climbers swiftly yet smoothly construct human pyramids with each tier standing on the shoulders of the tier below them. To bring the pyramid to shore, the climbers move all the way down to ride along the front of the skis of one of the bases. Pyramids are built up and taken down several times on dry land before they’re sent out onto the water.
PYRAMIDS
Shoe Skiing somewhere in between barefooting and trick skiing, you’ll find shoe skiing. Shoe skis are planks of wood just a few inches larger than the skier’s feet on all sides. Shoe skis are very slippery with no contouring or fins on the bottom of the boards, which enables the skiers to twist, turn, and
SHOE SKIING
tumble around on top of the water.

Swivel Skiing one of the most graceful acts in all of show skiing, ladies practice for years before swivel skiing for an audience in a show. Swivel skiing is named after the special swivel binding used for this act. A single-foot binding is mounted atop ball bearings allowing the skier to turn 360˚ revolutions while her ski continues to track facing the boat. This elegant act looks effortless but requires great strength and body control.
SWIVEL SKIING
Trick Skiing more often seen in the 3-event specialization of water skiing, a trick ski is a small oval-shaped ski with both front and back bindings but no fins. Trick skiers are able to twist around to perform 180˚ and 360˚ turns and sometimes flips.
TRICK SKIING
Trios featuring three skiers, the trios act is similar to adagio doubles. Two base skiers are connected to the boat by a waist strap, leaving their hands free to assist their partner with more advanced acrobatic tricks.
TRIOS
Wakeboarding wakeboarding was developed from a combination of water skiing, snowboarding, and surfing techniques. The wakeboard’s large surface area and ability
WAKEBOARDING
to corner quickly allow the rider to perform a variety of “big air” tricks.
Weave using staggered ropes, skiers in this multi-person act cut left and right quickly,
WEAVE
raising their rope for the skier in front of them and ducking under the rope behind them. At the conclusion of this act, the ropes are woven together at the boat end due to the woven skiing pattern by the performers.

Learn To Ski
Whether you’re learning to ski for the first time ever or getting back on the
water for the first time in years, our skilled instructors will guide you through a morning of fun on the water. There is no age limit to participate; however, the desire by the participant to learn the sport is important for his/her success.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn to ski on two skis. Those who are successful on two skis can try a single slalom ski. Our instructors WILL have you up on skis within your selected session. For only $40 per skier per session, you’ll enjoy personalized instruction in a small group setting. Our clinics are sanctioned by USA Water Ski. You’ll learn from some of the Carolina Show Ski Team’s most talented skiers alongside our certified boat drivers.
Due to high demand, we’re adding an additional clinic this summer. Make your reservation early as space is limited. Each day offers an early and late morning session.
