Hello And Welcome

T

hank you for being with the Carolina Show Ski Team during our waterski performance today. Our family friendly show will warm your heart, keep you on the edge of your seat with excitement, and your feet tapping to the music! Our team is passionate about entertaining audiences and creating a positive environment where kids and families can grow and be inspired. We do this all through show skiing. For more than 28 years, we have been bringing people together from both North and South Carolina who help our team practice, perform weekly ski shows, compete in show ski competitions, and give back to the community. Among our most popular community events are our annual Learn to Ski Clinics. Our success depends on the generosity of others: our volunteers, our awesome sponsors, our supportive community, and the kind donations from our audiences. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, 100% of all donations go directly to support the team. We use these funds to buy safety equipment; purchase supplies to make our own skis, ropes, and costumes; or sponsor a child for a ski clinic. We extend our gratitude to everyone who helps make our show possible. A special “Thank You is extended to the city of Tega Cay for allowing us to practice and perform in their beautiful park. We would also like to thank our friends at Community First Bank, Evinrude Outboards, Southtown Watersports, and Charlotte Mastercraft Center for their continuous support and generosity. We appreciate all our sponsors! If you love what you see and would like to join or support our Carolina Show Ski Team family, please talk to us after the show. L E A R N T O S K I Whether you’re learning to ski for the first time ever or getting back on the water for the first time in years, our skilled instructors will guide you through a morning of fun on the water. There is no age limit to participate; however, the desire by the participant to learn the sport is important for his/her success. Participants will have the opportunity to learn to ski on two skis. Those who are successful on two skis can try a single slalom ski. Our instructors WILL have you up on skis within your selected session.

For only $45 per skier per session, you’ll enjoy personalized instruction in a small group setting. Our clinics are sanctioned by USA Water Ski. You’ll learn from some of the Carolina Show Ski Team’s most talented skiers alongside our certified boat drivers. Due to high demand, we’re adding an additional clinic this summer. Make your reservation early as space is limited. Each day offers an early and late morning session.

Early morning session: arrive at 7:45am; ski 8:00am - 10:00am Late morning session: arrive at 10:15am; ski 10:30 - 12:30pm

T H E

T E A M DAVE LAVALLEY

TODD LARSON

Been skiing with the team for 4 years, May daughter Miranda has been with CSST for 5. I’m an electronics engineer and I do a lot of slalom skiing and building furniture in my spare time.

4th season with the team. I enjoy fishing, hunting, boating and snow skiing. CSST has allowed me to participate in a sport with my son Mack while meeting new people and learning the sport of Show Skiing.

ANDY JOHNSON

CELINA VU

I have been in the team for one year now. In my spare time I like to exercise. waterski (of course), play with my 4 year old son, and try all the local restaurants. On the team I base pyramids, barefoot, handle and strap doubles, and/or trios.

I am in CSST for 3 years. I am also in the swim team for 6 years. I enjoy all the water activities but do not like “ball” sports. I love reading, spend time with my friends and with my pets. Water ski is still my favorite sport. I am doing the handle double, pyramid, ballet and kid skis in CSST.

CLAIRE FLOWERS Claire is 10 years old and this is her 3rd year on the CSST. When she is not on the water (which is very rarely), she plays soccer and enjoys running. These days she is working on barefoot skiing and jumping the ramp!

TYLER NGUYEN This certified ripper goes to the University of South Carolina. Favorite activities are ripping, banging, and waterskiing.

FREDDIE WINGATE III I started skiing early on in life and my Dad pushed me too hard. I came back around after he settled down and I love to do everything behind the boat. My favorite is barefooting and jumping with my dad, until he starts his helicopter parenting stuff.....

EMMA ZIEMER I started knee boarding when I was 3 and skiing at 5 years old. Life is great on top of the water, ESPECIALLY when I can compete against my sister Sydney.

TOMMER CATLIN MARY ZIEMER

This will be my 4th season with the team. Back in my younger days was with the Chain Skiers in Wisconsin. I enjoy spending time with my kids on the water with the team and helping develop our new members to enjoy the unique sport of show skiing. In my spare time and with lots of help, maintaining all the ski team boats. Enjoy 2018!

She has been working hard for many years to keep skiers safe and ropes in line. Being in the boat has allowed her to watch and guide her 2 daughter’s Sydney and Emma and husband Jim.

JEN JOHNSON Growing up in WI, I learned to ski on a show ski team. Now, I enjoy being part of ballet line, pyramids, and swivel. My favorite part of being on the team is skiing with my son, Ethan. When I’m not skiing, I’m a professor at Wake Forest University.

ETHAN JOHNSON I am 4 years old and I learned to ski last season. I love to swim, jump off the dock, ski, and do doubles with my dad. This year, I hope to be able to ski with real skis, ride on shoulders, and even climb pyramids.

SARA NGUYEN I am a rising senior at Clover High school. I have been with the team for four years. I love to go tubing during the summer.

SAYLOR CATLIN I have been on the team for 3 years. I really like softball when Im not skiing. On the team, I do strap doubles and learning to climb pyramids. RACHEL NORMAND

ERIN RIDDLE

Rachel learned to water ski when she was 7 years old and barefoot at the age of 10. Shortly after learning to barefoot she started competing. Over time she progressed to the open division where she won 8 National overall titles and 5 individual World gold medals. She also had the opportunity to ski at Sea World of OH in 1997. Rachel now resides in the Tega Cay area with her husband and two children. She has a passion for growing the sport of barefoot water skiing through junior development. She is excited to be a part of the Carolina Show Ski Team for the first time.

I am from Lake Wylie, SC but, I am currently in Nursing School at the University of South Carolina- Beaufort. During the summer I spend my free time on the lake with my friends and teammates. I have been on the Carolina Show Ski Team for 9 years and spent the 2017 Ski Season as one of the Show Directors.

JULIA ANCEVIC Julia is a rising Junior and has been skiing with Carolina Show Ski Team since she was 9. Julia’s favorite parts of putting on a ski show are sparkling costumes and skiing with her brother. When she isn’t skiing she enjoys fashion, playing varsity lacrosse and sunshine/flowers!

JIM ZIEMER Jim has been skiing since dinosaurs were used...long before the invention of the boat. He loves show skiing because it allows participation of the entire family. Also serving as director of equipment, “if the falls don’t bring on the ibuprofen the headaches of keeping the boats ready will. ”

ADAM FOX Adam is the newest Fox family member to learn how to waterski, and is most proud of learning how to slalom last year. When he isn’t trying to keep up with his brothers, he’s busy perfecting his basketball and football skills. He loves learning sports trivia and baking sweets. One day he hopes to have his own ice-cream store.

SYDNEY ZIEMER I started skiing when I was 3 years old and loved it right away! You can catch me on the Lacrosse field and on a swivel ski where I am at my happiest. Seek what sets your soul on fire!

HUDSON FOX Hudson Fox has only known water skiing, starting at early age of 1 1/2 years, with his twin brother Ethan. His favorite skiing is slalom skiing and wake surfing. When he isn’t skiing, he loves to study all things about hyper-cars - don’t be afraid to ask him facts about any of them, as he will know it! He’s looking forward to a great season and can’t wait to get started!

DANIEL NORMAND I’m Daniel. I like sports and I’m good at football. My mom taught me to ski last summer. I’m excited to be on the junior ski team for the first time.

SAM GRIFFIN

JACLYN WHITT

Sam is back for his 5th year on the CSST. He enjoys being on the water with his friends and team. His other interest include playing saxophone in marching band. Mission trips to Guatemala. Washing his car and attending Cars and Coffee. He also enjoys hanging in his man cave and playing video games.

Jac’s the name, skiing’s the game. Swivel, barefoot, jump, anything that gets me on the water is a fun time. Sparkly costume? Bonus. This winter I spent my spare time writing and preparing this year’s show and I’m so excited to see it come to life. I hope you all have a blast watching!

BECKY FOX

ETHAN FOX

Becky Fox has been skiing for a long, long time with the Team (she counts in decades, rather than years!). She loves skiing with her 3 boys, being an informal coach/mentor to younger members, and especially loves just making great memories! Although she’s learned all of her swivel skiing skills from her perfect-boat-driving-husband Lance, she’s confident that THIS YEAR she’ll perfect that 720 overhead with the support of the Team!

Ethan Fox loves to try anything new in water skiing or any sport for that matter! Last year, he learned how to go over the 5 foot jump ramp, and this year, he’s hoping to perfect his long line barefooting! When he isn’t on the water, he can be found playing his favorite sports of basketball or football, or even possibly challenging someone to a fierce game of chess. Ethan is looking forward to another great season with the team!

BLAKE BOWERSOCK

TINA DANNAKER

Blake grew up in Oklahoma and developed a waterskiing sibling rivalry at an early age with his older sister. As he approaches 40, he’s the only one left in the immediate family to put on neoprene and is totally new to show skiing. Blake has been in business consulting since 2003 and based in Charlotte since 2016.

Tina first joined the CSST years ago while interning in Charlotte and joined again in 2008 when she moved back here. Over the years, she has been involved in multiple acts, always willing to step in where needed. In her spare time, Tina attends all of her kids activities. In the summer, you will find her enjoying the lake with her family.

14

CSST_2018.indd 14

5/22/18 8:06 AM

KIRA DANNAKER

VALERIE LAWRENCE

Kira has been on the team for about 7 years. She enjoys it because she gets to learn new things and make new friends. In her spare time, Kira plays soccer, trumpet, and competes in Odyssey of the Mind. She enjoys being outside with friends and is an active girl scout. You will find Kira in pyramids, doubles, and kids acts.

Valerie has been on the Ski Team for 8 seasons. She loves to ski and is always challenging herself to keep up with the younger skiers. Being on the Carolina Show Ski Team has been so rewarding and keeps her in shape. Being a part of the ballet line has been her focus. The family aspect of the team is what attracted her and her family to join the team years ago. Valerie cannot imagine living in Tega Cay and not being part of the ski team. The support from the community is very motivating.

SPENCER BARRINGTON-HUGHES

CASH CATLIN

Spencer Barrington-Hughes is an all outdoors 10-year-old. He loves to be in and on the water, on the soccer pitch, and on the playground. This is Spencer’s first year with the CSST.

I have been on the ski team for 3 years. I like to play with my friends, swim in the lake and pool, and especially waterski. I hope to climb a pyramid and work on barefooting. I like to play soccer, football and basketball.

CHASE BARRINGTON-HUGHES MIRANDA LAVALLEY

Chase Barrington-Hughes is a first year member of the CSST. He took to skiing immediately and is excited to join the team! Chase is a 9-year-old chess player, avid reader, and excellent soccer player.

Miranda LaValley is turning 15 this summer! She is a rising sophomore at FMHS. In her spare time she enjoys being involved with musical theatre, mastering her baking and drawing skills, and hanging out with family and friends. Sit still long enough and she just may draw your portrait in less than an hour! She is also interning to be a gymnastics coach. She loves water skiing and hopes to continue it for a long time following the footsteps of her Great Aunt Denise a professional water skier!

RUSS GRIFFIN Russ has been a spotter and driver for 5 seasons. He has never lost a ski. Well no one has any actual proof that he has ever lost a ski. His favorite person to pull is his Dad who will turn 80 this ski season.

BAREFOOT ACTS Step off your skis at 40mph and you will be on your bare feet cruising across the water! These guys and gals wear padded wetsuits with extra flotation .

BAREFOOT LINE Sure, its easy to step off a ski at 40mph. Now try and step off a ski and barefoot on the water with many of your closets friends doing the same! Its an amazing feeling to look left or right and see a fellow barefooter smiling (or catching a toe)!

BAREFOOT CIRCLE Barefooters can step off a ski, jump off a dock… how about laying on the beach and skipping out on the water, standing on their feet and doing a complete circle (or two) around the jump and back to the beach! (yes.. at 40mph!)

BACKWARDS BAREFOOT Why barefoot forward when you can go backwards on your feet! Barefooting backwards can happen off skis, fly start, beach start or even a front-to-back on the water! (you guessed it, 40mph).

FLAG LINE The flag line is one of the oldest ski acts on the water. Our team uses flags and staggered ski rope lines. Leaving the dock is coordinated carefully with driver to gentle pull each off one after another with their flag!

HYRDOFOIL The Sky Ski rides on a hydrofoil below the water, but lifts the rider out of the water on a chair! These gives the rider complete control to do amazing jumps and flips out of the water!

STRAP DOUBLES AND TRIOS Featuring two or three skiers, the strap doubles and trios act is similar to adagio doubles. Two base skiers are connected to the boat by a waist strap, leaving their hands free to assist their partner with more advanced acrobatic tricks. For strap doubles and single base skier and partner are pulled through the show course.

SHOE SKIING In the show ski world, shoe skies are really small planks of wood with bindings. Having no fins on the skis, they are similar to walking on ice as they are slippery! Tricks on the water you will see are one-foots, 180° and 360° turns.

TRICK SKIING

WEAVE

Little longer than shoe skies, but shorter than a normal ski, this discipline takes tricks on two skies or one. Back roles, 180°, 360° s, front flips. They are fun (and slippery no fin) skis!

Using staggered ropes, skiers in this multi-person act cut left and right quickly, raising their rope for the skier in front of them and ducking under the rope behind them. At the conclusion of this act, the ropes are woven together at the boat end due to the woven skiing pattern by the performers. 26

CSST_2018.indd 26

5/22/18 8:06 AM

S H O W A C T D E F I N I T I O N S AROUND THE BOAT Keep an eye on the show skiers as the driver takes them 360° all the way around the boat! It’s a coordinated dance on skies between the driver and the skier.

BALLET An all-female act, water ski ballet features several ladies performing graceful choreographed arm and leg movements. These women circle the show course several times on just one foot, holding the rope in their hands, between their legs (seat hold), with their feet (toe hold), or with their calves (heel hold).

BAREFOOT FLYER Why waste time with skis and stepping off at 40mph. Our crew will simply jump off any dock, jump or platform and go into a deep-water start to standing on their barefeet in seconds!

BAREFOOT BOMB-OUT Yet, there is one more crazy barefoot act, the bomb-out. While traveling on two skis at 40mph, these daredevils simply jump out of their skis and onto the water!

DOUBLES Our doubles acts features a duo of skiers leaving the dock on the bases shoulders performing choreographed moves over the water. The base always has the ski handle while the partner on top synchronizes their moves on top.

FREESTYLE JUMPING The jump crew here at Carolina Show Ski Team skis on specialized jump skis to hit the 16x24’ jump ramp on the water. The jump height is 6’ high over the water. The jumper perform a number of amazing tricks such as helicopters, front flips, over-unders and gang jumps.

PYRAMIDS The grand spectacle in the show skiing world is the human pyramid on water! Our team builds the pyramids from the dock and coordinate every move from the base skiers to the top tier climbers! Watch the smiles as they come around the show course.

SWIVEL SKIING One of the most graceful acts in all of show skiing, ladies ski on a special swivel binding used for this act. A single-foot binding is mounted atop ball bearings allowing the skier to turn 360° revolutions while her ski continues to track facing the boat. This elegant act looks effortless but requires great strength and body control.

WAKEBOARDING Wakeboarding was developed from a combination of water skiing, snowboarding, and surfing techniques. The wakeboard’s large surface area and ability to corner quickly allow the rider to perform a variety.
