Competition Goal: To create a conceptual design that revitalizes a downtown neighborhood in St. Louis. Greenspace moves through the center of the site, syncing networks of pedestrian pathways, roadways, and vegetation; giving the surrounding area a sense of community, while engaging the visitor in nature. SYNCING THE GREEN SPINE PROCESS OF DESIGN
Given the task of mapping out the habitat foms of St. Louis, we started with the entire city, eventually narrowing our way into the Pruitt Igoe area. Through our findings we were able to make connections & join surrounding neighborhoods to our project. The Green Spine creates a revitalized center that stretches throughout the middle of this distressed urban area and creates corridors using green spaces like ligaments and veins. It promotes connectivity and development in the area. Moving forward the goal is to continue stretching the green veins and ligaments until it reaches the St. Louis Arch.

Hives and Honey Preserve
A self sustaining pollinator farm
Hives and Honey Preserve takes guests on an interactive field trip through the farm educating them on the importance of honey bee pollination, as well as ways to reduce the carbon footprint through sustainable eco relevatory practices. This self sustainable bee farm invites guests onto the site for an indoor/outdoor eco-relevatory learning experience. The interactive field trip takes you through pollinator gardens, into the butterfly conservatory, through the honey bee educational station, and back out into the hypernatural garden setting, an optimized interdependable process
of nature and honey bee pollination. This process incorporates both monofloral honey and polyfloral honey. The design of the fields and orchards were created to seperate the beehives, as to produce the different types of honey. Taking into consideration the contours and slopes of the land, the farm has embraced the method of permaculture. The hexagonal shape placed in the blackberry and blueberry field combines the two fields and shows how polyfloral honey (two or more different plant species) is created; the same goes for the Blackberry/ Sourwood hexagon.

ENCOMPASSING THE ENTIRE SITE
The large tract of land given to create this project will be turned into a native oak hickory preserve. Using conservation methods, the Eco learning center conserves space and energy by only developing a small area for the buildings and gardens, in turn, having very little impact on the overall farm. The rest of the land will be devoted to protecting and feeding wildlife. This will promote bee pollination, as well as animal habitats. Where it was once barren agricultural fields, today the majority of the farm’s three hundred acres are covered in Oak Hiickory Forests, as a replanted preserve. Ecological restoration took place on other parts of the site as well. Including a pine forest used for sustainable timber harvest (helping with the financial funding of the farm), native wildflowers meadows and forests for the honey bees, a replanted wildlife forest, cow pastures, honey production and milk processing center, the lake used for ecological study and leisure, as well as a community vegetable garden.

HYDROLOGY
The buildings on the site were placed on a flat area of land at one of the highest points so that water could run away from the structure and into the surrounding gardens and pond. Permeable paving was used around the structures to mitigate stormwater. The green roof installed on top of the Honey House is used for rainwater harvesting. Stormwater from the butterfly conservatory and the two barns are collected in underground cisterns and used to water the gardens. The parking lot mitigates storm water into the rain gardens. Contour farming is used in the surrounding orchards and fields as to slow water down and keep it on site. The pollinator garden is intertwined with a rain garden to direct the stormwater runoff from the road and into the appropriate plantings.
SUSTAINABILITY
The farm’s sustainable practices include: solar energy, living machines to recycle water, bio-diesel for all machinery on the farm, weekly farmer’s markets (to encourage financial growth and local seasonal produce), gardens designed through permaculture, green roof practices, and rain water harvesting. 21st century sustainable design techniques were not the only ideas shaping this farm. In conjunction with the Sparrow’s Nest, a local shelter for people in need, the farm offers a work training program to help get the homeless off of the streets and back into the work force.
REGIONAL PATTERNS
The hexagonal shape of a honey comb, derived from nature, gave way to the design for this site. By keeping the existing contours of the site, visitors may witness the beauty of natural rollings hills and sloped terrain of the Piedmont Region. The Oak Hickory Forest was replanted as a preserve because it is native to the Piedmont. Native pants were chosen for the bees to make their honey, Sourwood, Tulip Poplar, Black Locust, Blueberry, Blackberry, and native wildflower. The stone paths emulate meandering streams as they take the visitor away from the formal shape of the built environment and into the natural world.
Cochran Mill Nature Center Design Challenge takes a site in Chattahoochee Hills, GA and creates a turn key master plan for the Nature Center to plan from. Our senior design class met with the clients to go over their realistic needs and set budget. At the time they only had one building, a lake, and a few trails.

CONCEPTUAL MASTER PLAN The site includes new animal shelters, a flight cage, an amphiteather, fire pit, greenhouses, garden plots, pavilion stations, trails, enlarged parking, bus turn around and parking, as well as green restrooms. I was fortunate enough to be a camp counselor at YMCA camp Greenville while in highschool; using my knowledge as a early childhood counselor, I worked with the site to design safe grouped areas where children could meet in outdoor classrooms and learn from nature. The Flagpole and second outdoor circular meeting spot act as location points to give the teachers a place to gather their children and meet up.
My plan was chosen as the master plan to work from. Once the plan was chosen, we divided each area up, each student taking a space. We graded the site, working with the contours to keep the water mostly flowing towards to lake or rain garden, and created a set of conceptual construction documents.

These two plans (on the following four pages) were drawn and rendered while at Bellwether Landscape Architects in Atlanta, GA. Bellwether used a combination of hand graphics hand drafting, and comparable photographs to visually inspire their clients. During my time there I was able to see projects move from design phase into construction. This residence had a quick turn around and was able to be installed soon after the plan had been created.

SITE ANALYSIS
This Project asked for an outdoor entertaining area as well as functional garden space on a standard residential budget. As a senior design studio class, we surveyed the site, took site photos, and met wth the client before beginning our intial design. The client wanted an amphiteatre type seating area below the first terrace.
PROPOSED MASTER PLAN This design includes a raised circular patio terrace for entertaining that acts as the center of the community gathering space. It connects all areas of the property to the center. Specifically requesting for an outdoor bath tub, this design creates a private outdoor garden with a decked tub that overflows into a natural pool. There are vegetable garden plots in the form of a parterre garden, as well as edible shurbs mixed into the landscape. The outdoor amphitheatre steps down in grade with boulder walls pushed into the landscape.

ECLECTIC MODERN PLAN
RESIDENTIAL DESIGN This contemporary modern home was set to be built in a very eclectic area of Athens, GA. The Pulaski Heights neighborhood connects downtown Athens with Normaltown, a quaint area where REM and other creative artists reside. The funky vibes coming from this neighborhood are shown through color and architecture. You never know what you may find once you enter through one of the garden gates in this neighborhood. We kept the vibes going in this project by giving our clients three conceptual plans for our take on Modern Day Athens. The three plans are as follows: Eclectic Modern, Elegant Modern, and Environmental Modern. Pulling from their California Style we incorporated corten steel, clean lines, and environmentally friendly design ideas.
ENVIRONMENTAL MODERN PLAN
ELEGANT MODERN PLAN
Garden Pool & Spa Athens, GA
PLAN A
While working at Koons Environmental Deisgn, I was given a project that called for options. The client had renovated a tudor home in Athens, GA. He had asked for a Pool, a pool house, and a lower level garden or lawn space for his daughter to enjoy. The existing formal lawn terrace, patio, and cottage played an important role in design. Our client wanted a renaissance italian theme and had mentioned formal parterre gardens and possibly a grotto. Our restraints came from the stream that passed below the tree line and grading options. We worked with the setbacks to design three elegant garden options for this Residence.
PLAN B
PLAN C At KED, we used comparable photos to further rely our ideas for the project. It gives the client a better understanding of where we are headed aesthetically, in terms of the “look and feel for the space.
