Welcome to the
Creative Whithorn Arts and Crafts Trail 2015
It will be a weekend packed with creativity, in 12 venues throughout the historic town of Whithorn. Shops, studios, galleries, barns and houses have been prepared for artists and makers to display their work. The Trail is a showcase of creative talent from across the Machars and beyond. Visitors will see demonstrations by many of the artists and makers. The exhibitions will display textiles, ceramics, wood craft, painting, print making, jewellery, glass work, photography and, this year, a number of artisan food-makers will be joining the Trail with tasty treats on offer. The Wigtownshire Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers will be returning to demonstrate how they work with wool, creating contemporary textiles using traditional methods and equipment. Also, demonstrating metal working skills will be blacksmith George Pattison, at The Smiddy.
A new feature for this year will be the ‘Five More’ exhibition, in the Ninian Gallery at the Whithorn Story Visitor Centre. This exhibition will run throughout July and showcase a mix of creative work by 5 invited artists. Taking part this year are: printmaker Jenny Smith-McOnie, specialising in collograph techniques; potter Andy Priestman, with his wheel thrown porcelain and stoneware pots; fine art photographer Laurie Campbell, from Northern Ireland; and visual artists William Neal, with a selection of his limited edition watercolour landscape prints and Gary Craig, with a selection of his original portrait and figurative work.
2015 is the UNESCO ‘Year of Light’ and artists from Creative Whithorn have been busy with a pre-Trail project on this theme. A light installation, created with the children of Whithorn Primary School, will be on view throughout the Trail weekend.

What else is going on? Other members of the community have also been preparing for the Trail weekend, with their own creative welcome to the town. You can expect to see beautiful floral displays by the Whithorn ‘Evergreens’ and even more flowers can be seen along Bruce Street. It will become the ‘Welly Walk,’ with displays spilling out of welly boots, created by members of the community and organised by St Ninian’s Priory Church. Members of Whithorn Art Group will be displaying work in the Community Centre. At Whithorn House, drop in for some knitting and a natter, with Ethel Brolls and hear about her charity, Children of the World. Along at the New Town Hall, the Mother and Toddler Group would like you to take ‘A Machar’s Moment’ with them. They will be serving a variety of light refreshments. If you plan a spot of alfresco dining at one of the picnic areas, then Whithorn House Tea Room is offering a pre-bookable picnic service, to takeaway.
