THE PROUD HOME Our town and borough has much to be proud of. From exceptional literature to sport, science, engineering and education, Rugby’s contribution to our world far exceeds that of our size or material wealth. This World Cup year has given us an outstanding opportunity to welcome visitors from across the world. We will show them how proud we are of the birthplace of the game, and how proud we are of our history and heritage. We are particularly proud to be hosting a Fanzone as an official Rugby World Cup 2015 Host City. An opportunity like this is not just for our visitors. Our residents, businesses and community groups can and should benefit. I’d like to invite you to join me for one of our unique events in our World Cup event space, the Rugby Village. There’s events covering the arts, engineering, literature, film, sport, science, food and drink. Each event celebrates some part of our history and heritage, including, of course, those 17 match dates when we are showing World Cup fixtures. This guide is a guide to an event, but it is also a guide to Rugby - a Rugby that I’m Proud to call Home. Cllr Michael Stokes Leader, Rugby Borough Council

MILLIONS OF FANS, HUNDREDS OF PLAYERS, DOZENS OF MATCHES – ONLY ONE HOME... In the heart of England is a special place, a town that gives its name to the sport and which has championed it from the earliest days while remaining proudly true to its roots. The town of Rugby is a shrine for fans yet is also a delightful, historic spot that will enchant any visitor. In 2015, rugby returns to its roots. England hosts the Rugby World Cup, with 20 teams competing for the sport’s biggest prize – the Webb Ellis Cup. The game may have changed since William Webb Ellis created history, but its heart remains in Rugby. It’s the reason thousands of rugby fans flock to Rugby each year – a pilgrimage to the birthplace of the game. This year Rugby is looking forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world as well as those closer to home. During the Tournament the Old Market Place will host an official Fanzone on match days screening live games on a giant screen and offering food, drink, music and themed entertainment for rugby novices, families and enthusiasts alike. When the Fanzone, a unique all weather covered events space, is not showing live matches it will become the Rugby Village hosting the Enjoy Rugby Festival – an exciting programme of events that celebrates the town’s proud history and cultural heritage! Within this beautiful festival guide you’ll find a full listing of the Enjoy Rugby Festival events as well as details of the matches that are being shown live in the Fanzone. Nestled amongst this is information on the town’s heritage, local attractions and the Rugby Real Ale Trail.
ENJOY THE FESTIVAL.

INVICTUS
(12A)
An old-fashioned crowd-pleaser which is both a rousing sports movie and a testament to the nobility of Nelson Mandela. Invictus boasts a finely controlled central performance from Morgan Freeman as Mandela detailing how South Africa’s first black president used the 1995 Rugby World Cup to unite the black and white populations in his country. Directed by Clint Eastwood and also starring Matt Damon as Springbok’s skipper Francois Pienaar, Invictus is testimony to the power of sport to bring people together, inspire and enlighten.

GRAV
Directed by the Torch Theatre’s Artistic Director Peter Doran. In October 2007 Ray Gravell, a man who for many embodied what it is to be Welsh, passed away after succumbing to complications resulting from contracting diabetes. He was 56 years old. Known to millions for his legendary exploits on the rugby field, ‘Grav’ was and is so much more than that. An actor, a cultural icon, a father, a husband, a man with a life packed full of stories that deserve to be heard once more. The Torch Theatre Company presents Gareth Bale as ‘Grav’ in a play written by Owen Thomas that celebrates the man and the legend. With the blessing of Mari, Ray’s widow, and contributions from his Welsh and British Lions team mates, this one man show will explore the life of a man who was as fascinating away from the rugby field as he was on it.

WILD TALES
(15)
A wickedly delightful compendium of six standalone stories united by the common theme of vengeance. This Pedro Almodóvar-produced blackly-comic collection from Argentina satirises the country’s corruption and complacency. Each story leads you through the protagonist’s increasing states of irk and agitation, building the pressure until they finally explode into riotous acts of violence and revenge.
“A terrific film and a real find” Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
A model on a plane discovers a strange coincidence with other passengers on a flight; a waitress serves up just desserts to a cantankerous customer; an obnoxious driver triggers a series of road-rage incidents; a parking warden tows the car of a demolition expert one too many times; a wealthy businessman tries to cover up his spoilt son’s misdemeanors; and a bride takes revenge on her philandering groom. Deliciously humorous! Winner of the Audience Award at San Sebastián International Film Festival and Sarajevo Film Festival.

WEDNESDAY 14 OCTOBER
“An excellent one man show… we were enraptured by Race’s rendering of the life and work.” The Spectator
It is almost impossible now to grasp the impact that Rupert Brooke’s personality had on the public leading up to his death in 1915. In an age before movie idols, rock stars and celebrities, he was feted and celebrated with unprecedented fervour. After his death, he became an icon for the British public, as James Dean and Elvis Presley would be for later eras.
RUPERT BROOKE
The play is the story of Rugby schoolboy Rupert Brooke beyond the myth of a young, beautiful, fallen warrior. It is the story of a far more complex and radical man. Following him from his time at Cambridge to his death in the Aegean Sea, Rupert Brooke reveals a man with a tumultuous personal life, a man not afraid to shock his audience, and a man vulnerably reaching to be ‘forever England’.

MURDERBALL (15)
Quad rugby as played by the US team, between 2002 games in Sweden and the 2004 Paralympics in Athens. Young men, most with spinal injuries, play this rough and tumble sport in special chairs, seated gladiators. We get to know several and their families. They talk frankly about their injuries, feelings in public, sex lives, competitiveness, and love of the game. There’s also an angry former team member gone north to coach the Canadian team, tough on everyone, including his viola-playing son. We meet a recently injured man, in rehab, at times close to despair, finding possible joy in quad rugby. After Athens, the team meets young men injured in war: the future stars of Team USA.

AN EVENING WITH
CATHERINE SPENCER AND FRIENDS
An evening with Catherine Spencer and Friends will be insightful, inspiring, funny, enjoyable, and memorable. It will be a great chance to hear some fantastic stories that you won’t be able to read in the papers. Former England Women’s captain willl be joined by world cup winning coaches, Gary Street and Graham Smith. They will discuss what it is really like to be two males coaching a squad of women covering some serious issues along with more lighthearted memories and stories from their time spent coaching in the women’s game. Added to the mix is Kate Philp a former Army officer who, after conducting officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst was commissioned in to the Royal Artillery and at just 25 was posted straight from training to a tour of duty in Iraq where she was responsible for 40 male soldiers. What is it like being a female leading a group of men compared to Gary and Graham’s experience of coaching a team of women?

SATURDAY OCTOBER 17 The latest stop-motion animated delight from the now legendary British Aardman Animation studios is that most unusual of things, a feature length film aimed for the mainstream family market without any dialogue whatsoever. The character of Shaun the Sheep is already a star in the TV series, which has been a hit around the world since it launched in 2007, In a decidedly British adventure (any film that had a caravan as a major part of its story tends to be British) Shaun and his fellow sheep head off on a series of adventures that veer between silly and thrilling to plaintive and even rather sad, but always managing to keep up a barrage of trademark sight gags and puns, both verbal and visual. RUGBY FOOTBALL OPEN EXHIBITION Rugby Art Gallery and Museum are celebrating this special year with an open exhibition themed around the sport of rugby football. Artists were invited to submit existing artworks that are about rugby football or create new works in response to the football theme. The theme was left very open to allow artists the freedom to interpret it for themselves. A selection panel had the tough job of selecting from the multitude of excellent applications we received. 19 artists were selected who have produced 21 works between them including 14 new art works created especially for the exhibition. The exhibition will include painting, drawing, film, textiles, ceramics and sculpture and will be shown alongside Ravi Deepres’ new film ‘The Gain Line’. Meet some of the artists behind the exhibition see p30

PARLIAMENTARY WORLD CUP 2015
Since its inception in 1995, the Parliamentary World Cup has fostered international relationships between politicians, decision-makers and the tournament’s sponsors, forging friendships and promoting dialogue through a shared passion for rugby. England will play host to the sixth Parliamentary World Cup, which will see over 300 politicians visit the UK in the week before the tournament for a festival of international rugby. All teams will play their first round of matches in the birthplace of rugby on The Close at Rugby School. The competition is more than just a means to play rugby; it provides the opportunity for politicians, businesses and prominent rugby figures from all over the world to come together in a great atmosphere where life-long connections can be made. The remaining fixtures will be played at Richmond and the tournament runs until Thursday 17th September.

OUR HERITAGE AND PROUD HOME THE WEBB ELLIS LEGACY Until Webb Ellis’s definitive act, the game of football had included handling the ball but no-one had been permitted to hold it and run towards the opposite goal. Progress forward was by kicking, hacking and what today might be described as an enormous rolling maul involving up to 60 players. In 1820 the game was played a little like soccer but players were allowed to catch the ball and then kick it out of their hands. There were no limits to the number of players on each side, evident in 1839 when Queen Adelaide visited the school to see the School House team of 75 boys play against ‘the rest’, a team of 225! In 1871, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was formed, largely of Old Rugbeians, and the first national code was introduced. Rugby School was the only team to play in white, and the reason England play in white is that the first committee of the RFU was composed largely of Old Rugbeians.
PIGS BLADDERS William Gilbert, a local bootmaker, took up ball-making to supply the school. In 1842, he established the first rugby football workshop, now the Rugby Football Museum,
92 www.enjoyrugby.co.uk
and the building with the longest continuous connection to the game of rugby in the world. The building in which the museum is housed has been at the centre of rugby ball manufacturing for over 160 years, beginning a tradition of rugby football manufacture that is carried on by Webb Ellis Ltd to this day. The ball was originally round, rather than the oval of today, and changed shape over a period of time as the game changed from a predominantly kicking one to a handling one. The shape of the ball was originally determined by the pig’s bladder used for the inside. A rather shrivelled 130-year-old ball was recently discovered in a blocked-up chimney behind the wooden panels of Old Big School, still containing the remnants of the original rubber bladder.
A RICH COLLECTION Established in the 1980s and redeveloped in 2009, the museum also houses a rich collection of international rugby memorabilia and artefacts gathered over the last 160 years. For a fascinating insight into the ball, the building and the birth of the game, the Rugby Football Museum is a must.

THE STORY OF RUGBY Here in the heart of our town, on Rugby School’s main playing field, The Close, a plaque proudly proclaims: “This stone commemorates the exploit of William Webb Ellis, who, with a fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus initiating the distinctive feature of the Rugby game - AD 1823.” There’s still something magical about that piece of ground, and some of the World Cup teams are expected to come and make a pilgrimage to the home of the game during their time in England this Autumn. It’s ironic that the plaque stands at the heart of a school whose boys and girls today would find “a fine disregard for the rules” more likely to land their name in the detention book than on a stone memorial. But sometimes rules are just made to be broken, and no-one can regret that act of rebellion which gave the world the sport which we are celebrating now. The development of the game coincided with the service of Rugby School’s most famous Head Master, Thomas Arnold. Under his leadership boys at Rugby grew in body, mind and spirit. Arnold himself wasn’t a great sportsman, but he encouraged football as an alternative to the two other physical activities which were popular with the boys – fighting and poaching! Academic achievement was important to him too, but his highest priority for the boys in his care was the formation of Christian character.
Pupils at Rugby School today are part of a continuing story. They train and play on the field where the game began; they learn in the classrooms where William Webb Ellis himself sat; and they pray and sing in the chapel where another important seed was sown in the young William’s life – his personal faith in Jesus, which would eventually lead him to a life of Christian service as a church leader. Body, mind and spirit – sport, work and faith; all three as important today as ever. When the World Cup gets into full swing, the town of Rugby will feel like the centre of the universe. For a while, for many of us, Rugby Football will be the most important thing in the world. And if England win . . . . well, let’s not even dare to think about it. Rev. Richard Horner, Chaplain, Rugby School

SOME INTERESTING CHARACTERS RUPERT BROOKE
Rupert Brooke is a famous Rugby son, born in Hillmorton Road in 1887. His father was a housemaster at Rugby School and it was whilst attending the school that Brooke began writing in earnest. Today a commemorative statue can be seen in Jubilee Gardens, along with an information panel outlining his brief but highly influential life. Rugby has links to other literary giants including Arthur Ransome (Swallows and Amazons), Salman Rushdie (Midnight’s Children), Richard Grant (Poet Laureate and ‘Dreadlock Alien’) and Charles L. Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, author of arguably the world’s favourite children’s book - Alice in Wonderland.
SIR FRANK WHITTLE
Born and bred in Warwickshire, one of Rugby’s greatest inventors was Sir Frank Whittle, ‘father of the jet engine’. Whittle was part of the design team who rented office space at Brownsover Hall, Rugby. Experiments soon began at British Thomson-Houston in Rugby and when the first jet engine, built to Whittle’s design, ran on a test bed on 12th April 1937, history was
made. Whittle had produced the prototype for the engines that made worldwide air travel available to everyone.
DENNIS GABOR
Rugby is also famous for being the home of the hologram. After fleeing Nazi Germany in the 1930s, Hungarian born scientist Dennis Gabor invented holography whilst working at British Thomson-Houston in Rugby in 1947. Holograms have since been developed for use in a multitude of consumer items such as credit cards, cosmetics, CDs, mobile phones and clothes. Visitors can still see the house in Rugby where Dennis Gabor lived.
GUY FAWKES
‘Please to remember the fifth of November’. The first line of this traditional verse dates from the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, which sought to blow up the Parliament and the King. Links with the area are notably in Dunchurch at Guy Fawkes House (then the Lion Inn), where the conspirators met to await the news that Westminster had been destroyed. When Guy Fawkes was instead arrested, the plan to seize Princess Elizabeth from her nearby Coombe Abbey home was abandoned and the conspirators fled, defeated.
